DESCRIPTION

A study on the esoteric underpinnings of Sarah McLachlan's music and art from a Christian perspective.

TRANSCRIPT

When asked what religion she follows, she replied in a 1996 interview, "I don't follow any organized religion, but I do believe in the idea of god as a verb -- being love and light, and that we are part of everything as everything is part of us." McLachlan covered the British Punk/New Wave band XTC's song "Dear God" in a 1996 tribute CD. Excerpted from a May 28th, 1996 SprintChat: Also from the same interview she answers the following question below. Q: Your most recent releases contain quite different examples of direction. 'Full of Grace' and 'I Will Remember You' are very soft and restrained, while your cover of Dear God contains a building intensity and anger that makes the song so sublime (and you may have guessed that I prefer this). Will we see more of this on your next album? A: 'Dear God' is not a song that I wrote and it has an intensity that perhaps I don't possess on my own. Dear God lyrics below Dear god, hope you get the letter and... I pray you can make it better down here I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer But all the people that you made in your image See them starving in the street 'Cause they don't get enough to eat from god I can't believe in you Dear god, sorry to disturb you but... I feel that I should be heard loud and clear We all need a big reduction in amount of tears And all the people that you made in your image See them fighting in the street 'Cause they can't make opinions meet about god I can't believe in you Did you make disease and the diamond blue? Did you make mankind after we made you? And the devil too! Dear god don't know if you noticed but... Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book And us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look And all the people that you made in your image still believing that junk is true Well I know it ain't, and so do you Dear god I can't believe in I don't believe I won't believe in heaven or hell

No saints, no sinners, no devil as well No pearly gates, no thorny crown You're always letting us humans down The wars you bring, the babes you drown Those lost at sea and never found And it's the same the whole world 'round The hurt I see helps to compound That father, son and holy ghost Is just somebody's unholy hoax And if you're up there you'll perceive That my heart's here upon my sleeve If there's one thing I don't believe in It's you Dear god Although she didn't write it, when asked if she had "any reservations from an ideological standpoint about covering the song," McLachlan replied, "None whatsoever." She has also reported herself as an agnostic. Whether she is aware of it or not she is espousing theosophic/panthieistic beliefs. The word agnostic was coined by Thomas Henry Huxley who was known as Darwins bulldog, and was a contemporary and friend with Charles Darwin and Karl Marx (and Marx WAS a satanist). The meaning of agnostic is A+ meaning without and the greek gnostic meaning knowledge. On a side note the sect of the Gnostics were NOT Christian, they were satanist's they believed God the Father was evil and that Lucifer/Satan was good and the giver of knowledge, this carried over into Polytheism, specifically to Promethius. In reality Satan/Lucifer is author of all the evil things that happen in this world not our Creator, who out of his love created us with free will, sadly though many reject his love leaving them prey to the deceptions of the accuser, Satan he first decieves people and then accuses them before God, he is the spirit who denies and the tempter he communicates to us through our emotions, our desires and our appetites, while our Father the Creator communicates to us through our conscience, our willpower and our intellect. A question answer response between Jessica Robertson from "Spinner" and Sarah McLachlan Q:Do you believe in God? A:I don't believe that there's a guy up there watching down upon all of us. But I do believe that the idea ... how do I explain this? God is energy. God is nature. God is in us. God is everything that breathes and lives, that connects us to ourselves and each other. It probably sounds really corny. Sadly it does not sound corny, it is theosophic/panthieistic. Which falls in line with what she stated in the above interview "but I do believe in the idea of god as a verb-- being love and light, and that we are part of everything as everything is part of us" . As good believing Christians we should pray for her, so this is not meant as a character attack of any kind, but we should seriously consider "where" her inspiration is coming from as its obviously not the Father Creator of the Holy Bible. Some other titles of her songs are "Fallen" and "Possessed" among other titles she seems to be adept at obfuscating her beliefs a little which should make us wonder about any esoteric intent. Her newest album title is oddly enough titled "Laws of Illusion".

Sarah as well created the all female musical arts show Lilith Fair to promote more recognition for female artists in the field, there is nothing wrong with trying to help fellow female musicians but we should take close consideration to the name she chose for it, Lilith Fair. Some will contend that Lilith was Adams FIRST wife made of the dust but sadly this is no where mentioned in the Word of God, the verse most often used to try and say that it IS in the Word of God and it is owl. Isaiah 34:14 The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest. The term owl is mentioned in the verse which is translated below. 3915. lyl layil, lah'-yil; or (Isa. 21:11) leyl {lale}; also laylah {lah'- yel-aw}; from the same as 03883; properly, a twist (away of the light), i.e. night; figuratively, adversity:--((mid-))night (season). There is NOTHING though, that eludes to the term being applied to a woman though until the Babylonian Talmud (written around 500-700 A.D.) in which Lilith was depicted as a demon of adversity (hardship or affliction). Good believing Christians should ask why would she (Sarah) choose this name? Where does her "inspiration" come from? Lilith folklore is WIDELY used in occultic esoteric tradition. As well the Babylonian Talmud was written AFTER the death of Jesus Christ on the cross and after he made the statement to the Pharisees and Scribes "Your house is left unto you desolate". I only intended to write this study as many WELL MEANING Christians are taking great inspiration from her songs. Also the cover of her album Laws of Illusion she is portayed seated in the moon at night. Symbolistically whether she intended this or not seems to allude to the idea of Lilith. If anything, from a Christians perspective, we should pray that she turns her face to the Lord so he may remove the scales from her eyes so that she may see. Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
