The History Of The Club• Essendon Football Club was formed in 1872.• The club’s first recorded game was against Carlton in June, 1873.• The club joined the new VFA in 1878 and in 1897 Essendon was one of 8

clubs that left the VFA to form the new VFL, which is now called the AFL.

• Essendon’s original colours are a black jumper with a red sash, red socks with black hoops and black shorts.

• The highest attendance for an Essendon game was round 4, 1995 at the MCG against Collingwood. Over 94,825 people came to cheer their team.

At The G

The annual Dreamtime match was first held in 2005 between Richmond and Essendon. These teams were chosen to play in the match because their combined jumper colours make up the Aboriginal Flag and both teams have Aboriginal players.

The aim of the indigenous round is to celebrate the contribution of indigenous players in the AFL.

FACT: There are currently 85 indigenous players in the AFL.
