E.BeingthebestatwhatIdoisastrongmotivatorforme,andIhavereceivedalotofrecognitionovertheyearsformyaccomplishments.IgetalotdoneandamsuccessfulinalmosteverythingItakeon.IidentifystronglywithwhatIdo,becausetoalargedegreeIthinkyourvalueisbasedonwhatyouaccomplishandtherecognitionyougetforit.Ialwayshavemoretodothanwillfitintothetimeavailable,soIoftensetasidefeelingsandself-reflectioninordertogetthingsdone.Becausethere’salwayssomethingtodo,Ifindithardtojustsitanddonothing.Igetimpatientwithpeoplewhodon’tusemytimewell.SometimesIwouldratherjusttakeoveraprojectsomeoneiscompletingtooslowly.Iliketofeelandappear“ontop”ofanysituation.WhileIliketocompete,Iamalsoagoodteamplayer.

G.Ihaveavividimagination,especiallywhenitcomestowhatmightbethreateningtosafetyandsecurity.Icanusuallyspotwhatcouldbedangerousorharmfulandmayexperienceasmuchfearasifitwerereallyhappeningorjustquestionorchallengethesituationandnotexperiencefear.Ieithertendtoavoiddangerortendtochallengeithead-on.Infact,sometimesIdonotexperiencemuchfearsinceIgointoactionwithlittlehesitation.Myimaginationalsoleadstomyingenuityandagood,ifsomewhatoffbeat,senseofhumor.Iwouldlikeforlifetobemorecertain,butingeneralIseemtodoubtorquestionthepeopleandthingsaroundme.Icanusuallyseetheshortcomingsintheviewsomeoneisputtingforward.Isupposethat,asaconsequence,somepeoplemayconsidermetobeveryastute.Itendtobesuspiciousofauthorityandamnotparticularlycomfortablebeingseenastheauthority.BecauseIcanseewhatiswrongwiththegenerallyheldviewofthings,Itendtoidentifywithunderdogcauses.OnceIhavecommittedmyselftoapersonorcause,Iamveryloyaltoit.

H.Iamanoptimisticpersonwhoenjoyscomingupwithnewandinterestingthingstodo.Ihaveaveryactivemindthatquicklymovesbackandforthbetweendifferentideas.Iliketogetaglobalpictureofhowalltheseideasfittogether,andIgetexcitedwhenIcanconnectconceptsthatinitiallydon’tappeartoberelated.Iliketoworkonthingsthatinterestme,andIhavealotofenergytodevotetothem.Ihaveahardtimestickingwithunrewardingandrepetitivetasks.Iliketobeinonthebeginningofaproject,duringtheplanningphase,whentheremaybemanyinterestingoptionstoconsider.WhenIhaveexhaustedmyinterestinsomething,itisdifficultformetostaywithit,becauseIwanttomoveontothenextthingthathascapturedmyinterest.Ifsomethinggetsmedown,Iprefertoshiftmyattentiontomorepleasantideas.Ibelievepeopleareentitledtoanenjoyablelife.

Wecomparedeachindividual’sEssentialEnneagramTestself-ratingtooneoftwo“goldstandard”ratings:

OneofthegoldstandardsusedwasadiagnostictypinginterviewconductedbyacertifiedEnneagramteacherwhodidnotknowhowtheindividualshadratedthemselves.Theothergoldstandardwastheindividual’sownreevaluationontheAssessmentInventoryaftertakingaten-weekEnneagramcourseoritsequivalent.

Thetwogoldstandardsproducedsimilarresults.TheseresultsconfirmthevalidityoftheEssentialEnneagramTest—thatis,theprobabilitythatuserswillaccuratelyselecttheirpersonalitytypefromamongthenineparagraphs.

Weanalyzedtheresultsforeachofthenineparagraphsseparately.Eachofthenineparagraphs,orpersonalitytypes,hasitsownprobabilityofbeingaccuratelydistinguishedamongthenineEnneagrampersonalitytypes.TheType

DeterminationpagesinTheEssentialEnneagramshowtheaccuracyofeachparagraph.Forexample,thePerfectionistparagraphhasa66percentaccuracy.Thismeansthattwo-thirdsofthepeoplewhoselectedthePerfectionistparagraphastheirtypewerealsoidentifiedasthistypebythegoldstandard,eitherbyanexpert’sratingthroughastructuredintervieworbytheirownreevaluationofthemselvesfollowinganEnneagramcourse.

PeoplesometimeschooseaparagraphintheEssentialEnneagramTestthatisnottheircorrectpersonalitytypebutisoneofthelook-aliketypesassociatedwiththeirpersonalitytypeorisoneofthefourpersonalitytypesconnectedtotheirpersonalitytype.Forthisreason,wealsocalculatedtheprobabilityofindividualsbeingeachoftheothereighttypesiftheirself-ratingwasnotcorrectwhencomparedtothegoldstandard.TheTypeDeterminationpagesinTheEssentialEnneagramshowtheseotheranalyses.Forexample,8percentofthesubjectswhochosethePerfectionistparagraphwereactuallytheRomantictype,8percentweretheLoyalSkeptictype,7percentweretheGivertype,and5percentweretheMediatortype.Theremaining6percentofthosewhocharacterizedthemselvesasPerfectionistweredistributedamongtheremainingfourtypes.

TheTypeDeterminationpageslisttheprobabilityofthetypethatsubjectschosebeingtheircorrecttype.Theyalsolisttheprobabilitiesofothertypesbeingsubjects’correcttypeinstead.TheTypeDeterminationpagesincludestep-by-stepinstructionsfortestingtheaccuracyofone’schoices.Theoverallpatternisameasureofvaliditybasedonthefollowingstatisticalanalyses.

WeanalyzedeachEnneagramparagraphwithrespecttosensitivity,specificity,predictivevalueofpositives,predictivevalueofnegatives,testefficiency,andCohen’sKappatestforintraclasscorrelation.WecomputedKappastatisticsforthetestacrossallninescalesasameasureofoveralltestconcordance.Testvalidityasmeasuredbycongruencyofrespondents’answerstothegoldstandardwasstatisticallyandclinicallysignificant.TheoverallKappafortheentiretestwas0.5254(p<0.0001),consideredasignificantdegreeofconcordance.Allanalysesofindividualitemsexhibitedconcordanceorintraclasscorrelationssignificantatp<0.0001.Weperformedreliabilityanalysiswithasmallnaivegroupofgraduatestudents(n=62).WegavealternativeversionsoftheinventoryfourweeksapartwithoutanintroductiontotheEnneagramandwithoutintroducinganyotherbias.Theanalysisrevealedasignificantconcordance,Kappa=0.589(p<0.0001).
