The 2018 Weddings Tasmania Expo: unveiled

Weddings Tasmania’s Annual Wedding Exhibition

turned out to be a spectacular success for the

bride and grooms-to-be who attended this

gala event on Sunday 23rd September 2018.

It was a particularly special event for us, as this

was our first year since our name change from

Bride Tasmania to a more inclusive ‘Weddings

Tasmania’. This change was warmly embraced

by our attendees – especially our LGBTQI

friends. A warm WELCOME to you all!

On the day, brides and grooms-to-be were out

in full force, eagerly sourcing the assistance and

expert advice of our keen wedding suppliers.

With the help of eager wedding professionals,

many wedding plans were put into action, and

many new and innovative ideas were sourced.

The following images reflect some of

the highlights from the 2018 Weddings

Tasmania Expo. Enjoy. ♥

Hooray!!! You just got engaged

Once the initial surprise of being engaged

wears off, and the last of the celebratory bubbly

has been drunk, you’ll need to make lots of

decisions. The following section details the

most important things you’ll need to do to get

your wedding planning off to a great start.

Probably the most important bit of advice we

can offer is … enlist the help of your family and

friends. You really don’t have to personally pick

up your wedding cake, drop off the seating

plan, or take the gifts home from your reception

venue. The key word here is ‘delegate’. You’re

likely to find that your wedding attendants,

family and friends will want to lend a hand.

Additionally, and sorry for the shameless plug …

Weddings Tasmania has developed a fabulous

Free Mobile Planning App. This app can be

downloaded free of charge for both Apple and

Android devices. The app will keep you on

track with your wedding tasks, and guide you

seamlessly through the planning process –

from your engagement to your wedding day.

The app will also notify you each day of your next

scheduled task. So there are no longer any excuses

for missing those all-important things to do.

Finally, though we have made every effort

to provide current and accurate information

for planning your wedding. Please use the

following suggestions purely as a guide

only to planning your perfect day. ♥

Handling your wedding day can be incredibly stressful. Everything needs to be perfect, everything needs to run

smoothly, and sometimes you don’t even know where to begin. Luckily, you’re not the first one to go through it!

SHANNEN MORRISON

Below we have gathered wedding advice from

popular wedding sites and couples who have

recently had a wedding of their own. This article

will run you through every aspect of your day and

give you some smart ideas you may find helpful!

PRE-WEDDING TIPS

Allocating tasks

» Set boundaries and responsibilities with

your partner from day one! Split things

down natural lines of interest. If your

fiancé is obsessed with music, then put

them in charge of entertainment.

» Organise a manager who isn’t

one of your guests.

» Pinpoint what is important to you and focus

on it. If the most important thing to you is

making sure the reception is as beautiful as

you dreamed, then focus on the décor and

put as much time and effort in as needed.

» A couple we spoke with, Emily and William,

say, ‘Organisation is key.’ For their wedding

The ultimate guide to handling your wedding day

– ‘Everyone had a running sheet of their

jobs and the date they had to do them by,

i.e. Pick up car, pick up dress, make favours,

pick up food. Everyone also had a running

sheet for the day, so they knew what time

the photographers were arriving.’

» If possible, you may want to hire a wedding

planner. Couples often cut this expense,

but coordinators allow you to enjoy your

day by keeping drama at bay, and they

will handle most of the day’s logistics.

Choosing your guests

» Invite all the special people who are close to

your hearts. Invite as many family members

as you wish, and make sure you and your

partner have an equal number of friends.

Also make sure you and your partner agree

on the guests you’ve chosen. You usually

want to invite everyone, but sometimes your

budget doesn’t allow it. Don’t stress over it.

Children

» To keep the youngsters occupied, create

a kids table for them to all enjoy one

another’s company and eat together.

» Prepare kids treat bags, and colouring and

writing tools with butchers’ paper. Games

such as hopscotch, Twister and Hula-

Hoops will keep kids happy so they don’t

get bored and pester their parents.

Choosing a date

» Try not to drag the date out. Once you’ve

booked a venue and caterers, run with it.

» Consider whether there are any specific dates

that are special to you and your significant other.

» Plan your wedding date around your

honeymoon, if you plan on having one.

» Pick the season or the month in

which you’d like to get married.

» Consider how long you’d like to be engaged for.

» Take your budget into consideration.

Choosing your vendors – venue, photographer/videographer

» A couple we spoke with, Sally and Daniel,

say, ‘Focus on “big ticket” items, like the

venue, photographer and celebrant as

soon as you can, to ensure that your

selections don’t book out in advance!’

» Another couple we spoke with, Anna and

Declan Smith, 100% recommend hiring a venue

stylist. Having someone style all your venue

decorations takes away a lot of stress. ‘Everything

was put into our stylist’s hands, from arbour to

menu boards, welcome signs and lighting.’

» Finally, Krystal and Daniel, say, ‘Ensure

you can get a videographer so you have

that memory safe, and so you can rewatch

things you might have missed.’

Seating arrangements

» This can be extremely tricky and time

consuming. It’s best to get one of

your bridesmaids or your wedding

planner to help you with this.

» Keep in mind that some of your guests may

have toddlers that will require high chairs.

Weather

» Our Autumn Wedding of the Year competition

winners, Jessica and Greg, say, ‘Most

importantly, if we could change one thing, it

would be to not have spent the weeks leading

up to the wedding stressing about the rain.

It was the one thing we could not control.’

Autumn wedding of the year

JESSICA + GREG, 24 MARCH, 2018

This is the beautiful story of Jessica and Greg.

From Facebook friends to husband and wife!

THE MEETING

After first meeting through mutual friends, Greg added Jessica

as a friend on Facebook. For the first few months they got to

know each other through social media. During that time, they

became best friends and soon afterwards they had a romantic

dinner date. Their relationship instantly blossomed from there.

ALL PHOTOGRAPHS BY: ALI dAVIS PHotoGrAPHY

THE PROPOSAL

Greg and Jessica had planned an exciting holiday

cruise from Sydney to Hawaii for April 2018.

Some time before leaving they were discussing

their future together and how they wanted to

start a family. They both agreed that marriage

comes before children. Accordingly, they

decided to get married. They then decided that

the holiday would make a perfect honeymoon!

They did not mention this to the family until

Greg asked for Jessica’s dad’s permission before

a spontaneous weekend away. Greg officially

proposed during their weekend away in April 2017.

From then on it was wedding planning time!

THE WEDDING

Unfortunately, weather was not on their side.

‘For at least two weeks leading up to the day,

the weather was miserable,’ Jessica said.

The morning of the wedding was gloomy, and

there was a rain shower earlier in the day. By noon

though, the sun peeped through. Jessica said,

‘We definitely had a few people looking down on

us, who kept the rain away for the ceremony.’

‘Our day was perfect, and we owe it to all of

those people who helped and attended.’

The couple chose to have their wedding on

Jessica’s parents’ property in Crabtree, in the

Huon Valley. Their photos were done by a

friend of theirs, Alistair. ‘It was perfect having

someone we knew capture our day.’

For their wedding theme, they decided on

‘Country’ and ‘Rustic’. Though common,

it didn’t take away from the masterpiece

that they managed to put together!

They emphasised a lot on the ‘Country’ theme

with wooden posts, barrels, boxes and wheels.

Jessica and Greg built a lot of their decorations,

such as their arbour, dance floor and screenage to

hide their marquee. Jessica’s parent’s home was

a huge resource (adding hay bales, horse carts,

tractors, and the bush backdrop). They were quite

budget savvy due to the large DIY component.

The couple also levelled a paddock on

Jessica’s parent’s property into a luscious

green surface for their marquee to sit on.

Jessica’s three gorgeous bridesmaids wore a

beautiful shade of blush pink. On the other

side of the aisle, Greg’s three groomsmen wore

pale grey suits … and in the middle of the aisle,

stood Jessica in her exquisite ivory Christina

Rossi Gown, (all clothing purchased from Storr’s

Bridal). Jessica is incredibly thankful for her

gown; she said, ‘I was lucky enough to have my

parents purchase the gown and gift it to me.’

The rings were bought from Prouds Jewellers.

Most of Jessica’s other jewellery was lovingly

given to her by family and family friends.

Jessica’s 59-year-old headpiece was gifted

to her from her mother-in-law. Her mother-

in-law and her grandmother both wore it for

their weddings! Jessica was also lent an ivory

brooch which belonged to her grandmother

who received it from Paris. Jessica’s cherished

brooch was pinned to her bouquet.

Greg wore a pocket watch in his suit. It

was gifted to him on his 30th birthday from

his great grandmother, and dates back

about five generations. How special!

Jessica and Greg’s family and friends gifted

some lovely flowers from their gardens

for their wedding, and the bouquets and

boutonnières were beautifully crafted

by none other than Jessica’s mum!

Their wedding cake was lovingly made by

Greg’s mother. It was three tiered; white choc,

caramel choc, and choc mud … YUM!

Jessica’s hair and makeup were done by two

lovely ladies, in two very hospitable salons.

Jessica had in mind what she was after and

she was very happy with the results!

HIGHLIGHTS AND HITCHES

Jessica’s highlight was, ‘Obviously seeing

Greg when I walked down the aisle. He was so

happy. I spent the whole time looking at him.

I wasn’t paying attention to anyone else.’

To add a bit of nostalgia to their wedding,

Jessica’s dad and her brothers-in-law restored

and re-painted her grandfather’s 1948 David

Brown Cropmaster tractor for their special

day. Jessica arrived at the ceremony on

the tractor, and her bridesmaids followed,

making the same grand entrance.

Jessica was worried that it might rain,

and that she wouldn’t be able to arrive on

the tractor. ‘It was more than a novelty for

me – it was sentimental,’ said Jessica.

Now, this will reach your hearts! When asked

about the highlights of their big day, Greg

said, ‘Driving over the hill into the Valley

seeing the clouds disappear and the sun

coming out, only to be outdone to the sound

of the tractors coming up the road, and

then turning around and seeing Jessica.’

Greg and Jessica have an inside game

where they spot windmills on road trips.

Greg said, ‘She had put a windmill on the

fence next to the aisle, and she pointed at it

and mouthed “windmill” on the way down.’

Jessica and Greg spent weeks practising their first

dance, but on the night, Greg completely forgot

what to do! ‘We both cannot dance!’ said Jessica,

‘It really wasn’t a hitch, because we all laughed.’

The champagne was forgotten, and ‘when the

champagne was found and poured into the plastic

champagne flutes, they all split!’ Thankfully, they

had plenty of champagne glasses on hand.

As for serious glitches, Jessica said, ‘We were

all in the marquee and it started to pour with

rain, and there was a tiny little gap where the

water gushed in. Thankfully we had amazing

guests, and everyone took it in their stride.’

THE HONEYMOON

The newlyweds went on a lovely cruise from

Sydney to Hawaii. The cruise was 19 days,

and then they spent a week further in Waikiki.

‘It was absolutely amazing!’ said Jessica.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES

» If you’re thinking about DIY, they said, ‘It

was tough, but all the hard work pays off!’

» Jessica says, ‘You’re allowed to be selfish and

say ‘no’ to other people’s suggestions, it is

the one time where it is all about you. Most

importantly, if I could change one thing, it

would be to have not spent the weeks leading

up to the wedding stressing about the rain. It

was the one thing we could not control.’ ♥

Winter wedding of the year

ALYSSA + MATHEW, 28 JULY, 2018 Photographer: Sarah Eliza Photography

It turns out dating websites do work!

THE MEETING

Alyssa and Mathew met on a dating website six years ago while

Mathew was deployed overseas. After Skyping and emailing

back and forth for months on end they decided to meet

one another before going on a two-week holiday together.

There, they fell in love and their life together began.

THE PROPOSAL

Imagine this, if you will. It’s the 2nd of May 2014,

two weeks before Alyssa and Mathew’s son is due

to be born. Mathew leaves the house early in the

morning, and not long after Alyssa receives a text

saying that she has one hour to get ready and

pack a bag for the weekend. She is told to wait

at the front of the house, bags ready, within the

hour. A limousine pulls up outside the house and

takes Alyssa to a day spa where she is pampered

with a facial, pedicure and pregnancy massage.

Afterwards, the limo picks her up and drops her

off at a hotel where Mathew stands, waiting for her

arrival. There, they have lunch and then head back

to the house. Later that night they both go out for

dinner. While Alyssa is ordering dessert, Mathew

tells her he is going outside and that he’ll be back

soon. Waiting impatiently, Alyssa sits at their table

for 30 minutes. A waitress comes by and asks her

to go up to the hotel room. By this stage Alyssa

is a little angry, being heavily pregnant and not

knowing where Mathew is. She heads on up and

opens the door to find a room full of lit candles

and rose petals in the shape of a heart. Mathew

was there, bent down on one knee with a white

stemmed rose in hand, all while Christina Perri’s

A Thousand Years is playing in the background.

In tears, Alyssa quickly walks over to him and

he proposes.

This heartfelt gesture was hugely unexpected.

Alyssa just assumed Mathew was spoiling her

for the day due to being heavily pregnant. What

a surprise!

Two years later they left Townsville and moved

to Tasmania.

THE WEDDING

Alyssa and Mathew’s ceremony was held at Saint

David’s Cathedral in Hobart on the 28th July, 2018.

The weather held up and was absolutely perfect –

despite Tasmania’s reputation for freezing winters.

This wonderful couple chose to have a simple,

tasteful wedding rather than choosing a big theme

as neither of them are ‘over the top’ people.

Everything on the day ran so smoothly that

by the time the girls had gotten their makeup

and hair done and arrived at the church, they

were early, and the driver had to do laps around

the block! When the time came, Alyssa finally

appeared in the white limousine they hired.

Mathew, standing at the altar in his handsome

army uniform, was accompanied by his three

trusty groomsmen, while Alyssa slowly walked

in arm in arm with her father. Alyssa, in all her

glory, was holding a superb bouquet of flowers

mainly consisting of white anemones, pale pink

and red roses, silver brunia balls and cineraria

leaves. Alyssa’s bouquet was wonderfully put

together by Frances from Floral Design Tasmania.

Their beautiful son was a big part of Alyssa’s

and Mathew’s day, and many gorgeous

photos were lovingly taken by Sarah Eliza

Photography of their little family.

Alyssa’s stunning dress had a lovely long-

sleeved lace bodice with a skirt made

of tulle, which was complemented by a

cream satin ribbon as was her veil.

For jewellery, Alyssa borrowed her mother’s

cameo brooch, ring and earrings and her

mother also made her a garter with lace

which was gifted by her grandmother.

To complete Alyssa’s exquisite look, her

makeup was done by Kat McNeill, a consultant

of the fabulous Mary Kay Cosmetics.

The newlyweds had their wedding reception

at the Anglesea Barracks in Hobart. Here,

their wedding cake was awaiting them. Their

marvellous cake was made of three tiers,

two were chocolate mud and the third was

a mouth-watering caramel mud cake.

HIGHLIGHTS AND HITCHES

Alyssa says, ‘The highlights for us were just

celebrating our day with our amazing family

and friends, some of which we hadn’t seen

since we moved to Tasmania in 2016.’

Thankfully, Alyssa said that her wedding

had no downfalls, ‘To be honest, nothing

went wrong, everything was organised and

it all ran so smoothly. Everything went as

we had planned.’ How great is that!?

HONEYMOON

The happy couple ended up having the

weekend to themselves at Riversdale Estate

Cottages, and they enjoyed having some

alone time together. They later honeymooned

in Cairns for 12 days, as Mathew was

deployed soon after they were married.

ADVICE

The lovely pair tells us:

» ‘Plan your day around what will make

you happy, after all it is your day.’

» ‘Weddings are celebrations of love. It is

just one day, and you have the rest of

your life together to make memories.’

So, keep that in mind and remember at the

end of the day, you have to be happy! ♥

Mathew was there, bent down on one knee with a white stemmed rose in hand, all while Christina Perri’s A Thousand Years is playing in the background.

Spring wedding of the year

ELLICE + ADAM, 10 NOVEMBER, 2018

THE MEETING

Ellice and Adam attended a party in 2008 where a mutual friend

introduced them to each other. They instantly connected on

an incredible level and spoke to each other pretty much every

day for the next twelve months. October of 2009 came around

and Adam finally decided to make their relationship official.

ALL PHOTOGRAPHS BY: SuSAnnAH JoHnSon PHotoGrAPHY

THE PROPOSAL

On the 4th of February in 2017, Adam apparently

lost his phone. To Ellice this was nothing unusual,

so they headed up to the top of the hill behind

his cherry orchard where he was last so they

could hunt for his phone. Ellice headed in the

opposite direction to Adam, then Adam yelled

out to Ellice and said he’d found his phone. She

headed towards him, and it was then he got

down on his knee and proposed. Further up the

hill Adam had set up a beautiful picnic on some

hay bales overlooking Cygnet, their hometown.

Adam had hidden the ring a few months before

he proposed. He says, ‘I wanted to plan the perfect

surprise because Ellice likes to know exactly

what’s going on and asks lots of questions so

it’s pretty hard to keep a surprise from her.’

THE WEDDING

Ellice – ‘We really wanted something low

key that represented us. We wanted to

just enjoy good food, plenty of drinks and

dancing, and also some honour traditions.’

In honour of tradition, Adam and Ellice were

married at St Marks Church in Cygnet, as the

church is very important to both of their families.

The beautiful bride walked down the aisle in

her gorgeous gown (purchased from Strutt

Bridal, Moonah) to a mix of From this Moment

and You’re Still the One by Caleb and Kelsey.

Adam looked pretty smart in his

outfit from Les Lees in Hobart, which

Shelley helped him put together!

The couple had a few special things to

include in this special occasion. Adam’s father

passed away a few years ago so he wanted

to include something special for him.

Adam – ‘I had my dad’s Torana redone

for Ellice to ride to the church in,

which was a beautiful moment.’

Ellice had one of Adam’s dad’s necklaces

made into a bracelet by the local jewellery

designer in Cygnet as a surprise gift, so that

his dad was with him on their special day.

Adam and Ellice also wanted to include their

mothers in a special way, so they were both

asked to be their marriage witnesses.

Their reception was held in Adam’s family

cherry packing shed, which was built in 1917.

The shed still functions today, so there was

a lot of work to be done on it to get it into a

pristine condition for a wedding! They wanted

it to be personal, so they incorporated a lot

of sentimental elements throughout.

Many late nights after June were spent

washing apple bins and removing unused

machinery. While cleaning they uncovered an

old apple grader system used by the family; it

then became a feature for their reception.

Twinkle lights and white sheets were hung

from the ceiling, apple bins were decorated with

hanging candle jars, and the tables were lined with

greenery. The guest favours were little jars of fresh

honey from the beekeeper on the family property.

Their menu consisted of a spit roast with

vegetables, salads and a grazing table. They had

a stunning two-tiered, chocolate, naked cake

which was iced with white icing and drizzled

with dark chocolate! The night was spent dancing

away to the music provided by their band.

Ellice – ‘Although I was quite stressed in the

weeks leading up to the wedding, I couldn’t have

been more relaxed on the day. My bridesmaids

went above and beyond, continually making

sure I was okay, running back and forth on

the day to meet vendors, and especially in

the days leading up to the wedding.’

‘We hired a house next door to the reception for

us girls the night before. I gave them each a box

with matching pyjamas, robes and had rings

inscribed with our wedding date. It was a special

moment to share with the girls having our hair

and makeup done before the next chapter began.’

HIGHLIGHTS AND HITCHES

Ellice – ‘The whole day was perfect and

exactly what we had envisioned but walking

down the aisle and seeing each other for the

first moment was something very special.’

‘We are so grateful for all the support and help

we had from our family working alongside

us in the shed to make our dream become a

reality. The night had a beautiful atmosphere.’

Ellice had another highlight she wanted

to mention; Adam surprised her yet

again the day before the wedding!

Adam surprised Ellice by doing up her childhood

rocking chair and added a plaque which wrote

‘To my darling wife, you beautiful thing, love

your husband.’ The chair came along with a big

orange teddy bear and a pink camo gun bag, it

wasn’t until a few minutes after when the tears

had stopped flowing Ellice realised there was

a brand-new gun inside it. It was a beautiful

moment for her, capturing those few things

special to the both of them. ‘At that moment I

couldn’t have been more ready to marry him.’

A week before the wedding the couple

encountered a problem. Their videographer

had double booked, so they no longer had

someone to capture the special moments.

Luckily, a friend of theirs was able to

organise someone local for them instead!

THE HONEYMOON

The newlyweds cruised around the South Pacific

for seven nights, exploring the beautiful islands

of Noumea, Lifou and Port Vila. The couple both

said it was ‘the most perfect way to relax and

enjoy each other’s company as newlyweds.’

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES

Ellice and Adam have a few pieces of

advice for other couples out there:

» If something doesn’t go according to plan, no-

one will notice. Don’t dwell on the small details.

Just relax and take in the beauty of the day.

» 100% hire a videographer so you can relive

the moment over and over. Our video is

something we will treasure for years to come.

» Remember the purpose of the day

and enjoy every minute! ♥

While cleaning they uncovered an old apple grader system used by the family; it then became a feature for their reception.

Summer wedding of the year

LOUISE + JORDAN, 19 JANUARY, 2019

Match makers do in fact exist!

THE MEETING

Louise went to a photoshoot one day, to then meet

the guy of her dreams. Jordan was also doing this

photoshoot. They later found out that the photographer

of that shoot went to great lengths to set them up!

ALL PHOTOGRAPHS BY: JonAtHAn WHErrEtt PHotoGrAPHY

THE PROPOSAL

Louise and Jordan’s proposal took place at the

beautiful Isle of Pines in New Caledonia. On this

specific day the water was incredibly clear, so

they decided to go snorkelling. Louise was a little

further ahead, so Jordan called out to her saying

that he’d found some fish. As Louise got closer,

Jordan said she needed to look under the water

to see the fish. When she looked down through

her snorkel mask, she saw Jordan holding the

ring under water. For that moment, Louise was

so surprised she had forgotten how to breathe

and almost choked on a mouthful of seawater.

Jordan helped her get back to shore and it was

then she managed a simple ‘Yes please!’

THE WEDDING

The couple had their wedding on Jordan’s parents’

property of four acres in Orielton – not far East

of Tasmania’s historic village of Richmond.

His mum and step-dad did a wonderful job

of transforming their land into a beautiful

dream wedding venue. Jordan kindly said, ‘The

amount of work they put into landscaping,

designing, building and hosting the whole

event was nothing short of incredible. We

couldn’t have asked for a better venue.’

Louise and Jordan never really had a specific

theme in mind for their special day. They just

simply wanted to complement the gorgeous

rural venue they had. On top of the marquee

they hired from Salters Hire (decorated with

fairy lights), this consisted of hessian coverings,

wooden cable reels for drink tables, succulent pots

hanging up through the aisle, and old-fashioned

furniture to add some character to the ‘rural

aesthetic’. ‘Those, combined with the beautiful

weather and rolling hills in the background made

for some pretty special scenes,’ said Louise.

Louise added lovingly, ‘The only way to

describe our day was perfect. We were stressed

about all sorts of things like the weather, the

decorations, the food, the alcohol, whether it

would all come together, but as soon as the day

started, we realised that none of that mattered.

Having all the special people in our lives there

to celebrate our love was the most important

part, the rest was just icing on the cake.’

The floral arrangements were mostly artificial,

but beautiful nonetheless. The rest were

retrieved from family and friends’ gardens.

Their three-tiered cake was two thirds white

chocolate mud and one third plain chocolate mud.

The bride looked absolutely stunning; her

gown was chosen from a store in Latrobe, as

her hometown is on Tasmania’s North-West

Coast, and that was something very special to

her. Louise’s hair was done by the wonderful

girls from Audrey Hair in Lauderdale.

Louise wore a special sapphire bracelet which

belonged to her late nan. As Lou’s ‘something

borrowed’, her grandma lent her late grandpa’s

necklace to wrap around her bouquet.

HIGHLIGHTS & HITCHES

Marvellously, Louise and Jordan each

had their own highlights for the day.

Louise: ‘Two highlights stand out to me that both

reduced me to tears. Firstly, Jordan’s vows to me.

I had done my best to hold it all together when

walking down the aisle and when I saw my loved

ones “crack up” when they saw me in my dress.

But when Jordan recited his vows, the tears did not

stop. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one crying. Call

me biased, but those vows were the most heartfelt

and raw that I have ever heard, and knowing that

they were for me, well that was pretty special.’

‘Secondly, Jordan and Brendon’s surprise. It was a

moment where I felt like “Is this happening? This

stuff only happens in the movies or on YouTube!”

But it was, and it was happening to me. I was

being sung to by my husband on our wedding

day. Find me a luckier or happier lady, I’ll wait.’

Jordan: ‘One of my biggest highlights was

surprising Lou with a song. My best man,

Brendon, and I played and sang Ed Sheeran’s

Perfect for her. It’s always been Lou’s and my

favourite song. My mother told me before the

wedding that if I don’t sing for her, Lou will

never tell me, but she’ll always be a little bit

disappointed. So, I had to. Mum is always right.’

‘The other highlight was seeing Lou and her Dad,

round the corner and walk towards me down

the aisle. They both looked so happy, and Lou

was so beautiful, it was pretty overwhelming.’

Thankfully, the closest thing the happy couple had

to a hitch was that they were enjoying themselves

so much that they forgot to cut the cake! Funnily

enough, they spent the better part of the week

afterwards trying either to eat it or give it away in

chunks. Not many people can say they had cake

left over from their wedding, so that’s a plus!

THE HONEYMOON

Louise and Jordan had their honeymoon to Japan

in April, during the school holidays (as Louise

is a teacher). While Louise and Jordan booked

the honeymoon straight after the wedding in

January, they did not go until April – the time of

year when the cherry blossoms are in bloom.

The two newlyweds stayed there for 14 days,

back-packing through Osaka, Hiroshima,

Kyoto, and Tokyo – and we can’t forget to

mention the sneaky last few days at Tokyo

Disneyland. What an exciting adventure!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES

Louise and Jordan realised how little they

needed to worry about how perfect everything

needed to be. So, here is their advice:

» ‘In the week leading up to the wedding, put

aside a night, afternoon or even a few hours

where it is just you and your partner and just

spend some time together where you don’t have

to stress about the wedding for a little while.’

» ‘Also, take time to worry about the details leading

up to the wedding … but after a certain point,

forget all about them. On the actual day, none

of it will matter and all you will care about

is having an amazing time with the love of

your life and the people in your life you love.

We keep laughing at the ridiculous things we

were worried about now, because the day flew

by in what feels like a moment, and the only

things we remember about it were the people

we shared it with and the love we felt.’ ♥

For that moment, Louise was so surprised she had forgotten how to breathe and almost choked on a mouthful of seawater.

7 Tasmania News feature: Louise + Dave

It’s incredible how an exchange of drinks can blossom into

a lifetime of love. This is the story of Louise and Dave.

THE MEETING

Louise had just returned home after living and travelling through

Europe and the UK. On the 18th of December, 2013, she was meeting

up with a group of friends she grew up with and travelled with.

Dave was there too, having knock-off drinks with some mates.

Dave made a comment about Louise’s drink and said he liked

LOUISE + DAVE, 7 MARCH, 2020

it; Louise thought the same about his drink,

so they swapped. ‘It was an encounter that

changed our lives.’ Louise quickly fell head

over heels for Dave. Though Dave was quite

cautious, they are together now and couldn’t be

happier, or more excited to be tying the knot!

THE PROPOSAL

The night before Louise’s 30th birthday, Dave

planned a fancy dinner which they enjoyed

together. Dave had also done some secret

planning with her mum and booked a boutique

hotel in Salamanca for the night of her birthday.

That morning Dave gave Louise two presents and

proceeded to tell her that he couldn’t wait any

longer to give her the third. He asked her to turn

around while he got the third surprise present and

when she turned back around Dave was on one

knee! After a few tears she said ‘yes – of course!’ He

then advised that there were specific conditions

they had to agree on before the wedding could

go ahead. The first, the wedding couldn’t be ‘too

hectic’, and the second, Dave could still go on two

surf trips each year. Obviously, Louise agreed.

THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY

Louise and Dave’s engagement party was

incorporated into Louise’s birthday party. The

evening of her birthday was spent at her mum’s

Airbnb, where they announced the big news

to their family and friends. Louise says, ‘The

incredible amount of excitement in the room will

always be a treasured memory.’ Dave and Louise’s

families have embraced one another, which is

beautiful. Louise and Dave say they are aware

how rare that is and how very lucky they are to

have that luxury. ‘We are so lucky to adore each

other’s friends and family as much as we do.’

Louise’s engagement ring is a family heirloom

from Dave’s side of the family. Louise says,

‘It is incredibly beautiful and special, and is

made from white gold and diamonds.’

THE WEDDING

On the 7th of March 2020, the wedding will be

held at Louise’s family’s property (an olive grove)

in Woodbridge, which holds special history and

many beautiful memories. Her aunt and uncle

own the property, and her aunty Helen will also

be their marriage celebrant. Their property is a

stunning place perched on a hill, overlooking the

D’Entrecaustaux Channel (The D’Entrecasteaux

Channel is a body of water located between

Bruny Island and the south-east of the mainland

of Tasmania, Australia). This property is also

where Louise spent a lot of her childhood with

her grandmother who has sadly passed. Her

ashes are now scattered over the dam. Dave also

loves the property, admiring it and wandering

around it. They feel very lucky to be tying the

knot on the same property many of their other

family members have used, also to tie the knot.

The theme for their wedding will be a

rustic country style with loads of flowers,

dim lights, and lots of love. The two are

envisioning a huge marquee, big heaters,

hay bales, and delicious food and drinks.

Louise and Dave also have family and friends

flying in from across Australia, so now is as good

a time as any to get together and celebrate the

years Louise and Dave have been together.

Louise also plans on sprucing up the tractor

on the property for their main feature on

the day, and also their gorgeous dog Missy!

‘She is a border collie cross labradoodle, who

is the most precious, placid, and gentle girl

you’ll ever meet. We absolutely adore her,

as does everyone else who meets her.’

The groom’s attire is yet to be confirmed, as with

the flowers and wedding cake. Their decorations

will be bought from markets; they will have lots

of greenery which is easy to access in Tasmania.

Both Louise and Dave’s parents will be giving a

helping hand, along with Dave’s sister and friends.

THE PLANNING

Louise says, ‘It’s relentlessly busy.’ Dave says,

‘It’s chilled and we’re on top of everything.’

It remains a mystery!

THE HONEYMOON

The happy couple are still working out the logistics

of their honeymoon, however, Louise would love

to travel Europe again and visit some friends in

the UK. Dave on the other hand is quite interested

in visiting the Maldives and South America. As

a surfer, Dave would love somewhere where

the waves are constantly pumping. They say,

‘We have lots of ideas, but not all can become

reality. Time will tell where we jet off to.’

ADVICE AND TIPS

» Louise and Dave say, ‘Write lists, stick to them

no matter how small or big the job. Get in early

for photographers/caterers/celebrants and

save-the-dates. Take advice from others and

accept ideas. Focus on what you want, and

not what others say you should want. It’s your

day, and your biggest memory, so do it well.’

7 TASMANIA NEWS

Louise is a TV reporter and presenter with 7

Tasmania News, and also for 7 Spencer Gulf

Nightly News which is filmed out of Hobart.

She says, ‘I absolutely adore my job. I have

found my calling; every day is a different

experience or opportunity. One day I could be

on a boat covering the release of two critically

endangered eagles, the other, covering

state parliament, or the Supreme Court, or

Tasmania’s latest major tourism venture. We

have an exceptional team. They’re hardworking,

intelligent, and incredibly on top of their game.’

Louise mentioned that the 7 News team has

a solid working relationship, as well as a great

social one. They consistently rate as the highest

watched news in the state, and after reading what

was said above, we don’t have to wonder why.

Louise continues, ‘Whether I’m out on the

road covering a major story, or presenting

the bulletin from the studio, I thank my lucky

stars every day that I have this job. I’m very

lucky that Dave supports me in it, too.’

Dave is a designer and builder. According

to Louise, he is incredibly talented and has

an eye for detail, planning and design. No

doubt these qualities will be extremely helpful

throughout the wedding planning! ♥

We are so lucky to adore each other’s friends and family as much as we do.

Jenna + Mike8 DECEMBER, 2018

Photographer: Sarah Eliza Photography

THE MEETING

Jenna and Mike met through mutual friends and they had been

together for eight years before they got engaged. They spent

that time together in South Australia and Queensland, before

they moved to our little island of paradise – Tasmania!

THE PROPOSAL

The happy couple travelled to Hawaii to celebrate

Mike’s 30th birthday in May 2017. On their exciting

trip away, they decided to visit Maui. While there,

Mike arranged a beautiful sunset cruise for them

to enjoy together. Both Jenna and Mike were

on the back of the boat taking in all the lovely

scenery when Mike asked a crew member to take

a photo of them. It was at this point while they

were smiling at the camera when Mike got down

on one knee with a stunning ring in his hands. He

asked if she’d spend the rest of her life with him

and as the story goes, they lived happily ever after!

… Of course, she said yes and the tourists

surrounding them clapped and cheered!

THE WEDDING

Jenna spent the night before her wedding

at her family home with her lovely

bridal party. They woke to an overcast

day which was perfect for photos!

Mike spent his morning with his five groomsmen;

they went out and enjoyed breakfast together

and then got ready for the big day.

The groom dressed in his handsome suit from

Storr’s Formal Hire in Hobart, and the bride

spent the morning at home getting ready

with the five girls, and their makeup and hair

stylists. Jenna said, ‘We had lots of fun getting

ready and when the photographer arrived, and

we got dressed, time just seemed to fly by.’

Jenna’s gorgeous bridesmaids all dressed

in a divine smoky-pink colour and they

all had stunning matching bouquets.

Jenna and Mike’s ceremony was held at the

Rayburn Farm in Forcett, and their beautiful

reception was held at the Ramada Resort in

Seven Mile Beach. The happy couple were

married by Leanne Orr, a Civil Marriage

Celebrant. Mike’s ring was chosen from Criterion

The wedding had a rustic, country theme to

it, and as you can see – Jenna’s shoes worked

perfectly with this style! Nina from Style My

Day warmly put together the styling and décor;

Jenna’s dad helped make table decorations and

even grew the succulents for their bonbonnieres!

The groomsmen also built their reception

backdrop wall from scratch. Jenna and Mike are

both very appreciative of everybody’s help.

The wedding date they chose had enormous

sentimental value. Although it extended their

engagement, it was extremely important

to them; as they shared their wedding date

with Jenna’s maternal grandparents who

lovingly got married on the 8th of December

1951 and are sadly no longer around.

The two also played The Shoe Game during

the reception which everybody enjoyed!

It was a lovely family affair with friends and family

who travelled interstate to celebrate with the

couple from South Australia and Queensland.

Overall, Jenna says, ‘The day felt very relaxed and

fun, everyone was calm and had a great time!’

HIGHLIGHTS AND HITCHES

Jenna’s uncle knew how close she was to her

grandmother and surprised her on the morning

of the wedding with her ‘something old’ gift.

He had made a garter especially for Jenna with

fabric from her grandmother’s wedding dress.

It was incredibly special and a really lovely

moment for her, her mum, and her uncle.

It was very important to Mike and Jenna that

they found a ceremony venue that allowed

animals so that their fur-baby, Meeka (an Alaskan

Klee Kai), could be involved in their special

day. ‘She was such a good girl walking down

the aisle with my bridesmaid and sister-in-

law and loved being the centre of attention.’

Jenna and her mum are very close … So close

that she had Jenna and her bridesmaids in tears

when she presented her with her ‘something blue’

and ‘something new’ gift, which was a diamond

necklace in its Tiffany blue box saying the words,

‘Diamonds are forever, just like my love for you.’

Mike is a Heavy Haulage Truck Driver. A definite

highlight for them was their cake stand which

was an amazing replica of the truck and trailer

Mike drove during their time based in Mackay,

Queensland. ‘It was so unique, and amazing

to have such a distinctive part of Mike’s life

and personality so visible at our reception.’

As for hitches, Jenna said, ‘We arrived at

the ceremony a little later than expected,

but the bride’s always late … right?’

THE HONEYMOON

Jenna and Mike planned their amazing getaway

honeymoon in the US for April 2019.

Unable to wait four months for their main

honeymoon, the newlyweds booked 10

nights in Bali at the last minute as a mini-

moon and had a beautifully relaxing time. The

majority of their trip was spent by the pool,

but they also enjoyed some other activities.

They visited the well-known Bali Swing, the

marvellous Rice Terraces in Ubud, and Tanah

Lot, which is quite a popular tourist attraction.

For their main honeymoon, they travelled

to America and spent time in Nashville,

Tennessee and then made their way down

to Florida. After Florida, the two attended an

amazing music festival in Miami and then

headed to Disney World in Orlando!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES

» Jenna says, ‘We couldn’t have had the wedding

of our dreams without the support of our family

and friends who all helped so much with the

DIY decorations. Without my dad helping make

table decorations and growing our succulent

bonbonnieres, or our groomsman building

our reception backdrop – our day wouldn’t

have been nearly as beautiful or memorable.’

» Her advice: involve your family and

friends in the planning process. Everyone’s

individual contribution makes it so much

more enjoyable and a lot less stressful! ♥

Anna + Declan9 FEBRUARY, 2019

Photographer: Sarah Ryan Photographer

THE MEETING

Anna and Declan met eight years ago on the night of Anna’s 18th

birthday. Before meeting, the two exchanged messages most

days through Facebook. From then on, their relationship flowered

into the gorgeous relationship you are reading about today.

THE PROPOSAL

The proposal was as merry as could be. Before

Christmas, Declan had sneakily hidden two small

boxes inside one big box up in the manhole of

the roof; these were for Anna. In the early hours

of Christmas Day in 2017, Declan, abnormally,

woke up at the crack of dawn waiting to open

the presents. Anna had no inkling about what

was going to happen. Soon, Anna opened one

of the boxes and voila! Puzzled, Anna asks,

‘Is that what I think it is?’ Then Declan knelt

on one knee and popped the question!

Anna says, ‘Being Christmas Day, we

were able to share the special news

with family in person on the day.’

THE WEDDING

Anna and Declan didn’t want anything too formal.

They wanted somewhere they could hold their

rustic/boho (Bohemian) themed ceremony and

reception. After the proposal they visited what

ended up being their venue of choice, Willie

Smiths Apple Shed in Grove, Tasmania. ‘Willie

Smiths had the rustic vibe that we were after

and it ticked all of our boxes.’ All of their venue

decorations were styled with love by Nina from

Style My Day. ‘Seeing everything fall into place

was nothing short of incredible!’, said Anna.

Knowing weather in Tasmania is unpredictable,

Anna and Declan both decided to risk having

their wedding earlier in the year. It was supposed

to be dry and hot, but the week of the wedding

flipped around and rained, with wind and low

temperatures. The day continued regardless. Anna

says, ‘It may have been a mild 17°c but we got

through the ceremony without any rain, despite

black clouds looming. Eventually the clouds rolled

through, bringing the blue skies and sunshine!’

Anna and Declan were announced husband and

wife on February 9th by Leanne from Leanne

Orr Civil Marriage Celebrant. They exchanged

rings which were looked after by the littlies.

As for the cake, the happy couple decided on a

gorgeous three-tiered, naked cake that beautifully

complemented their rustic style! For wedding

transport, the pair chose a blue Kombi, which also

perfectly complemented their wedding theme.

Everything from their special day was recorded

by their wonderful photographer Sarah Ryan

and their videographer Cameron Green.

The couple knew it was going to be an amazing

day, but it went above and beyond that. The

two say, ‘It exceeded all of our expectations!’

HIGHLIGHTS & HITCHES

‘We considered our whole day to be a highlight.

Being able to share this special day with our

closest family and friends really contributed to

making this the best day of our lives. Our bridal

party can’t go without a mention, they were

all incredible on the day and in the lead up to

the wedding. They definitely played a large

part in making our day a day to never forget.’

As for hitches, the only thing that didn’t fall

into place was Declan not being able to find his

wedding shirt before the wedding. His sister

was sent to their house on a mission to find the

shirt. Anna explains, ‘Eventually it was found

in his wardrobe, where it was stored for the

last three months.’ What a typical boy-look!

Apart from that one mishap, their

special day went according to plan!

THE HONEYMOON

The couple started their lovely honeymoon by

spending five days in Port Douglas, Queensland,

where they stayed in a Balinese inspired villa.

All five days were thankfully full of incredible

sunshine, regardless of the predicted rainy weather

since it was in the middle of their wet season. The

highlight of this part of their honeymoon was a

day sail and snorkel out in the Great Barrier Reef!

From there, they travelled to the Gold

Coast and drove down to Byron Bay where

they spent two relaxing, luxurious nights

in the Elements of Byron Resort.

To end their romantic honeymoon, Anna

and Declan drove back up to Surfers Paradise

and stayed there for two nights at the Hilton

Hotel. At this point Cyclone Oma was in its

first stages, so their flight back home was quite

rocky. Lucky for them, they got home just in

time to miss any damage or misfortune.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES

» Anna and Declan 100% recommend hiring a

venue stylist. Having someone style all your

venue decorations takes away a lot of stress.

‘Everything was put into our stylist’s hands, from

arbour to menu boards, welcome signs and

lighting etc. This took away the stress of having

to set up our venue on the day of the wedding.’

» They also say to ‘Take a moment during the

evening to spend some time with each other to

take everything in. You don’t realise how quickly

the day goes.’ Also, another word of advice, ‘At

the end of the day, make sure you have fun!’ ♥

It may have been a mild 17°c but we got through the ceremony without any rain, despite black clouds looming. Eventually the clouds rolled through, bringing the blue skies and sunshine!

Sally + Daniel17 FEBRUARY, 2018

Photographer: Lifestyle Images by Alexandra Grimshaw

THE MEETING

After attending the same college for grades 11 and 12 and not

taking the same classes, Sally and Daniel both ended up in the

same class at University. Daniel said, ‘By chance, we were put

in the same Computer Aided Drafting class (how romantic!). I

didn’t know anyone else in the class and I saw Sally sitting up

the front by herself. I decided to go up the front and sit next to

her and we spent the rest of the semester sitting together.’

After Daniel introduced himself, Sally said,

‘He’s been by my side ever since!’

THE PROPOSAL

It was coming up to Sally’s birthday, so Daniel

decided to speak to Sally’s parents about

proposing, and they were extremely excited.

‘This was a risky move on my part, because

keeping secrets is not a point of strength for

Sally’s mum. To her credit, Daniel says she did

an amazing job. Daniel took Sally out to their

block of land that evening with a picnic rug,

candles, and a speech he had prepared earlier.

Sally said, ‘I could see Daniel was acting unusual.

By this point, we had been together for over

five years, so I knew all his tells! Adding fuel

to the fire, he had told me I might be able to

have my birthday present before dinner if I got

ready quickly. Spurred on by this interesting

development I got ready in record time!’ By the

time they got to the block, Sally was almost certain

he was about to propose, but she tried not to

get her hopes up‘… just in case the present was

a new set of pruning shears to trim the trees!’

When they arrived, Daniel led Sally up to the top

corner of their block, overlooking the Derwent

River. He rolled out a picnic blanket and also pulled

out the candles. Unfortunately, they blew out

multiple times, but that didn’t take away from the

special moment. Finally, he proposed with Sally’s

Nanna’s engagement ring. ‘It was such a beautiful,

romantic moment and I couldn’t think of a more

perfect place or way for him to pop the question.’

After Sally accepted, they celebrated with

dinner and wine at a French restaurant.

THE WEDDING

Their wedding day was everything they

could have dreamed of. Daniel said, ‘It was a

celebration of us starting our lives together

and the generosity and love given to us by

our family and friends was incredible!’

66 WEddInGS tASMAnIA 67 JuSt EnGAGEd!

They were married in St Mary’s Cathedral, which

was where Sally’s parents and grandparents were

both married. This however was not the only

reason they chose St Mary’s. Daniel and Sally both

came from religious backgrounds, so having a

church wedding was in both their interests.

The reception was held at the University Club

in Sandy Bay just across from the engineering

building. This is where the couple first met,

so it held a special place in their hearts.

The couple wanted to pay tribute to Daniel’s

Italian heritage by incorporating rustic Italian

pieces into their theme. For wedding favours, they

gave each of their guests a shot of limoncello.

Lovingly, Sally further added, ‘It was the perfect

occasion for us to formalise and celebrate our love

for one another in front of all our loved ones. We

had grins plastered on our faces from the moment

we saw each other at the end of the aisle to when

we were dancing up a storm into the night.’

In addition, they had an amazing custom cake

topper, and the bride and groom figurines

were in fact 3D printed versions of Daniel and

Sally in their wedding attire! How quirky!

Her flowers were beautifully prepared by

Frances from Floral Design Tasmania, and

all the gorgeous photos were taken by

Alexandra Grimshaw from Lifestyle Images.

There is also a special story behind Sally’s

wedding gown! ‘I bought it before I was even

engaged! My sister and I had attended a Weddings

Tasmania expo in 2015 and amazingly she was

told she had won a Luxe Bridal voucher.’ Her

sister, though, had already put a deposit on

her own wedding dress! ‘Even though Daniel

and I weren’t engaged at the time, my sister

told me to pick out my future wedding dress,

and perhaps spur him on in the process!’

HIGHLIGHTS AND HITCHES

Daniel explains his main highlights, ‘For me,

the first highlight was seeing Sally walk down

the aisle. She looked incredibly beautiful and

having her next to me helped settle my nerves!

Next, was the moment we walked out of the

church as a married couple. This was the end

of the formalities, we were married and then

we got to relax and enjoy the reception. One

standout was Sally and her dad’s dance, which

was a funny choreographed medley which

brought the house down with laughter.’

As for Sally, ‘The biggest highlight of all was

marrying the man of my dreams! I loved that

we found a way to involve almost everyone

in our immediate families in the celebrations.

Another highlight was when my dad pulled

off a miraculous recovery from an illness a

week before the wedding to not only bake

and decorate our beautiful wedding cake, but

also perfectly execute our choreographed

father-daughter dance medley which was

over four minutes long with seven songs!’

THE HONEYMOON

The couple went on a mini-moon to unwind

after the celebrations in Coles Bay on the

East Coast of Tasmania. However, their main

honeymoon was planned for later in the year.

They went to Greece in the European Summer

and toured around the Cyclades islands for

three weeks. During their trip, they had a one-

day sailing experience, took a cooking class in

Santorini and learnt about the history of Athens!

Sally emphasises, ‘It was simply paradise.’

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES

» Daniel – ‘My advice is that it will be the most

wonderful day and not to get too caught up on

the small stuff! The main thing is celebrating the

occasion with your family and friends. If small

things go wrong, you will hardly remember

them in the years to come, and if you do,

they often make some of the best stories!’

» Sally – ‘Focus on “big ticket” items, like the

venue, photographer and celebrant as soon as

you can, to ensure that your selections don’t

book out in advance. Take a breather and enjoy

the planning process with your husband-

to-be. We organised and made a lot of the

decorations ourselves, which was something

fun we could do together whilst saving a lot of

money in the process. Enlist help and delegate

tasks that you are happy to part with!’ ♥

Emily + William17 FEBRUARY, 2019

Photographer: Linda Pasfield Photography

Emily & William are a match made in heaven! The two

married on their 8th anniversary of being together ... This

recap of their wedding will indeed touch your hearts.

THE MEETING

Emily and William first met in high-school when they were 13 years

old. They had a few classes together and were quite good friends.

On Valentine’s Day in 2011, William invited

Emily over to watch a movie. Three

days later, on the 17th of February, they

officially started ‘going out’ together.

THE PROPOSAL

At their first home together, William anxiously

paced the floor and nervously awaited

Emily’s arrival after a long day at work.

At last, her car arrived, and he rushed to get

the ring so he could be waiting on one knee

at the front door right as she walked in.

Unfortunately, Emily had a tiring day and

wasn’t aware of what was waiting for

her. Her first thought was of the rubbish

bins that had not been put out yet.

With her arms full of groceries, she opened

the door calling for William to ask why

he hadn’t done the bins yet. She then

realised he was kneeling right in front of

her with a ring box in hand … Awkward!

It is safe to say the bins were completely forgotten

about, as she accepted William’s lovely proposal.

THE WEDDING

The couple got married at the Clarendon House, a

rural colonial estate built in 1838. Their ceremony

was in the gardens, under a very old oak tree.

‘Bill and I are both very old fashioned, and

are constantly told we were born at the

wrong time.’ This part of their personalities

was perfectly embedded throughout their

wedding! The groomsmen wore charcoal

coloured pants, brown shoes and suspenders,

while the women wore a beautiful shade of

light pink – both of which wonderfully set

the tone for the old-fashioned theme.

The gorgeous couple walked down the

aisle to the song Slow, by Grouplove, which

their school friend Zoe sang for them.

The wedding decoration and theming

were both done by Emily herself and her

wedding planner Amy Bosworth.

Emily and William’s reception tables were styled

without table cloths as they had dark brown

wooden tables. They had charcoal coloured

napkins which were tied into knots and the

setting was furnished with rose gold cutlery.

To serve their water bottles and champagne,

they set up vintage suitcases filled with

their goodies. Another was also open

for guests to place their presents in.

Their cake had three tiers, two of which

were naked cakes and the bottom layer

was covered in a glossy frosting.

Emily and William arranged their own spit roast,

grazing table (with cheese, fruits, and meats), and

favours. The pair chose Relish Everyday Café for

the bridal party’s finger-food during the day, and

also for the wedding food. Relish delivered the

food to the venue, right as they served dinner,

so everything was fresh and set up perfectly.

All of the lovely couple’s photos were beautifully

taken by Linda Pasfield with her husband

and business partner, Anthony Pforr.

HIGHLIGHTS AND HITCHES

One highlight for Emily was the shoe game where

they sat back to back and answered questions

with one of two shoes. ‘One of our groomsmen

Chris asked us questions and we had to answer

by holding up either the bride or the groom’s

shoe. He asked us funny questions like “Who

spends the most money?”, “Who does the most

cleaning?” or “Who starts the most fights?”. We

even had a few guests come up with questions.’

Another highlight was their first dance. Their

song choice was Can’t Help Falling in Love, by

Elvis Presley. William mentioned a highlight

also; ‘Seeing all our family and friends and how

much they enjoyed themselves at our wedding.’

Their guests also loved the house tours

they offered. Emily and William didn’t want

their guests to be bored while they had their

wedding photos taken, so they had tours of

Clarendon House where they could learn

about the history of the house and grounds.

The one main hitch on the day was Bill sleeping

through his alarm. William had three jobs to do

early that morning, and since he woke up three

hours late, he hadn’t picked up the groomsmen,

the food platters from Relish or Emily’s dad’s

car for the groomsmen to ride in … Oops!

Emily of course, panicked. She ended up

calling Bill’s granddad to get him to wake

Bill up. Emily said, ‘Luckily my dad jumped

in and did all of Bill’s jobs for him that

morning, so we were not running late.’

THE HONEYMOON

Emily and William left for their honeymoon a few

days after their gorgeous wedding. Their ten-

day honeymoon was spent on Savusavu Island

in Fiji. The pair stayed in a beautiful, overwater

bungalow at Koro Sun Resort, which they said

was amazing! The newlyweds had a lot of fun

swimming, standup paddle boarding, snorkelling,

and enjoying lots of rainforest massages. Perfect!

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES

» Emily’s advice is, ‘Organisation is key. I am

very over the top organised, to the point where

everyone (groomsmen, bridesmaids, mum,

dad and anyone who was helping) had a

running sheet of their jobs and the date they

had to do them by, i.e. pick up car, pick up

dress, make favours, pick up meat and cheese.

Everyone also had a running sheet for the day,

so they knew what time photographers were

arriving and things like that. Everyone found

this very helpful and made it less stressful for

them on the day as they knew exactly where

they had to be and at what time. I was over

the top organised but found we had no real

issues, and everything went smoothly.’ ♥

Things to do 12+ months out

Once you are engaged, everyone will be asking

you about when, where and how your wedding

will take place. In reality, you won’t be able to

set an exact date until some major decisions are

made. These may include (i) the availability of your

family, VIP’s and bridal party, and (ii) choosing

(and booking) your venue, ensuring the availability

of your favourite photographer, marriage

celebrant, caterer, and more. So allow yourself a

couple of days’ breathing space and think about

the factors that may influence your wedding date.

The following section provides a suggestion to

the path of tasks that you may wish to tackle 12+

months out from your wedding. Good luck. ♥

YOU’VE FOUND EACH OTHER.AND NOW YOU’VE FOUND

THE DREAM LOCATION!

With a wonderful variety of indoor and outdoor locations, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is an ideal place for your wedding in a picturesque and natural environment.

The Gardens celebrated its Bicentenary in 2018, and it has been a popular wedding location throughout its 200 year history. From the colour of the Japanese Garden to the historical class of The Conservatory, or a unique personal space within the 14-hectare site, there is a venue to suit everyone.

The experienced Gardens’ staff are keen to assist couples with any queries about their special day. With its romantic little white bridge and beautiful natural surroundings, the Lily Pond has traditionally been one of the most popular wedding venues at the Gardens.

As part of the Bicentenary, this area was transformed, with the construction of a contemporary development making it one of Hobart’s newest venues. This new feature includes three functionally designed Lily Pad decks floating above the water from the pathway level. There is wheelchair access on the upper deck and some fixed seating.

Located 5 minutes from the centre of Hobart and with plenty of free parking, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is the perfect wedding venue.

» If it looks like it’s going to be super sunny

or rainy, purchase some small umbrellas

for the bridal party that match your theme.

They’ll look good in photos too!

Theme and decorations

» Create a sense of who you are as a

couple and use your special day to

convey your story together.

» Make sure your wedding programs, escort

cards, and DIY projects are taken care of

well before the week of your wedding.

Bridal party attire

» For the bride: if you really like a dress, buy it.

Do not hesitate on that. The pain of passing

up the opportunity for the perfect dress is

much worse than having bought one and

then finding another one that’s better.

» If you bought new shoes for the big day,

whether you’re a bride or groom, be

sure to break them in ahead of time.

» If you’re ordering online, leave enough

time to ensure everyone fits their outfits

properly, that everyone is happy with their

attire and that they all look perfect!

Budgeting

» Make sure to start saving from the

moment you get engaged! Weddings

are very rarely a cheap festivity.

» Set a budget and work within it. There is no

need to go overboard with everything.

» A couple we spoke with, Sally and Daniel,

say, ‘We organised and made a lot of

the decorations ourselves, which was

something fun we could do together whilst

saving a lot of money in the process.’

Favours

» Favours can be edible or miscellaneous

items. Here’s a few ideas: candles, cupcakes,

infused oils, bath salts, jars of preserves

or condiments, soap, loose tea, coffee

beans, chocolates, or succulents.

» Make sure these are prepared well

before the wedding week!

Other

» Don’t sweat the small stuff, on the day you

will not notice, and neither will your guests.

» Give yourselves time to organise

things and enjoy the process.

» It’s one day, so if things don’t quite go directly

to plan, don’t stress. Just enjoy your party!

» Grooms should make a list of all the things they

need to do on the morning of the wedding.

» Our Summer winners for the Wedding of the

Year competition, Louise and Jordan, say, ‘In

the week leading up to the wedding, put aside

a night, afternoon or even a few hours where

it is just you and your partner, and just spend

some time together where you don’t have to

stress about the wedding for a little while.’ Also,

‘Take time to worry about the details leading

up to the wedding … but after a certain point,

forget all about them. On the actual day, none

of it will matter and all you will care about is

having an amazing time with the love of your

life and the people in your life you love.’

MORNING OF THE WEDDING

Take care of yourself

» Don’t forget to breathe.

» Taking thirty minutes to relax yourself with

a nice warm bath will help melt away any

stresses. Make sure the water is warm enough

to relax any tense muscles and use bubbles

or bath salts for added aromatherapy.

Waking up

» To wake up refreshed you should get

to sleep at a decent hour the night

before so you can be well rested.

» Give yourself plenty of time to get ready.

This doesn’t mean you should force yourself

to get up at 4am, and it doesn’t mean it’s

okay to sleep in as long as you like either.

What to eat

Eat a breakfast that is high in protein

and carbs. This food will take a while to

break down in your body and it will also

keep you going throughout the day.

What to wear

» Wear a button up shirt before you get into your

gown. While getting your hair and makeup

done, you’ll want to wear something you can

easily take off without ruining your face or hair.

» Don’t overdo the perfume or cologne.

Too much can make you feel

nauseous and also attract bugs.

What to pack

» Spare shoes. Trust us, you will be wanting some

flat shoes when you get to the dance floor!

» Don’t forget a wedding day survival kit.

The typical kit includes things like basic

first-aid, tampons, a nail file, a stain

remover pen, a mini mirror, safety pins,

bobby pins, and even earring backs.

» Your phone. If you don’t have a purse with

you, or pockets in your dress, you may

need to ask your maid of honour to hold

it for you until you want to take a selfie!

THE CEREMONY

Transport

» Ensure all your guests have a way of

arriving to your selected venues. Use shuttle

buses and Uber to your advantage.

» Ride in style! Perhaps hire a fancy

car that you and your partner would

love to use for a grand entrance.

Walking down the aisle

» Get loose before you walk down the aisle.

No, we do not mean get drunk. Do some

light stretching to release any tension

and get your blood flowing so that you

don’t pass out. Yes, that can happen.

» Keep your bouquets at hip height.

Choosing your celebrant

» Make sure they have an outfit that

will complement your theme.

» Ask what arrangements they have in place in

the event that they have an accident or become

ill and are unable to perform the wedding.

» If you’re stuck with wording, ask if they

can help with writing your vows.

» Make sure you get to proof the ceremony

wording before the wedding day. This is

recommended in case there is anything you

don’t want your celebrant to mention.

Signing paperwork – info and witnesses

» There are some key pieces of information that

must be provided before the wedding day:

1. The date and place of birth of both parties.

2. Proof of identity of both parties.

» Usually, your celebrant will supply three

Certificates of Marriage. One you and your

spouse need to sign, one your two witnesses

over the age of 18 need to sign, and one which

your celebrant will sign on your wedding day.

Photo time

» Make sure to let your photographer

know all the people you want photos

with so you don’t miss anyone.

Decorations/setting

» Get your wedding planner or stylist

to set up the chairs or benches for the

ceremony and any floral arrangements

you want to decorate the scene with.

» Make sure you have access to power

for microphones and speakers and

any music you’ll have playing.

Other

» Stop to take it all in. Ask your celebrant to

include a ‘deep breath’ moment so you can

look over the crowd, look at your spouse

and burn the memory into your brain.

You won’t get another opportunity.

… enlist the help of your family and friends. You really don’t have to personally pick up your wedding cake, drop off the seating plan, or take the gifts home from your reception venue. The key word here is ‘delegate’.

THE RECEPTION

Flowers

» If you pre-order your flowers and they

get delivered to you the day before the

wedding, make sure you trim the stem

diagonally and place them in water! This

will ensure that they last longer.

» Think outside the box … you may be

able to halve the amount of flowers that

need to be purchased by adding in other

features such as fruit or branches.

» Pick a colour and design scheme, not a

flower scheme. To do this, choose flowers

that match your colour theme rather than

simply choosing flowers just because you like

them. This will create a more artistic look and

it will help to blend everything together.

Meals

» Keep in mind that some of your guests may have

some dietary requirements. Also, you may have

children present. So, make sure to plan ahead

and get your special orders in to your caterers.

Alcohol

» Be careful with alcohol. Your wedding

day is one you want to remember clearly,

forever. So, make sure you don’t drink too

much. A rule of thumb – drink a glass of

water in between each glass of alcohol.

Speeches

» Stay poised during the speeches. If something

inappropriate is mentioned, it’s best to just let

it slide. Many people probably missed it, but

they wouldn’t miss you screaming or making

a scene during one of your friend’s speeches.

Music

» Give the DJ or band you’ve hired a list of

songs you want to hear during the night.

Or go even further and have a USB ready

with all the music you would like.

Dancing

» Make sure you dance. Your favourite music

is playing, the dance floor is packed with

people you love, and you have a reason to

celebrate. With those conditions, you’d be

silly not to dance and enjoy yourself.

Eating

» From the moment you wake up you’ll be on-

the-go and that likely means eating will be

the last thing on your mind. If you don’t want

to miss out on eating during the wedding ask

your caterer, your friend, your photographer

or anyone you like to pull you aside at some

point. Whether they just remind you to eat or

prepare a plate for you when the time comes, it

is always a good idea to eat a little something.

Paying vendors

» If you have any outstanding bills that need to

be taken care of, you’ll likely need to deal with

that on your wedding day. Have the payments

ready to go in labelled, sealed envelopes and

perhaps consider asking a member of your

bridal party to be responsible for holding them

on the day so you don’t have to worry about it.

Cake cutting

» Don’t do the cake smash. Well … you can, but

it’s not recommended. Brides, you will still

have people to see and photos to pose for, so

don’t risk getting cake or icing in your hair

or on your dress. Grooms, this is not how

you want to start married life. Trust us.

Photos

» Arrange for some group photos to be taken

at the reception. Your photographer may

suggest doing this before the reception,

but you should leave that time period for

the more formal time-consuming photos

with your close family and bridal party.

Games

» To entertain your guests, you may want to

arrange some games everyone can join in on.

Some game ideas are: The Shoe Game, Ring

Toss, Giant Chess Board, Wheel of Fun, Word

Search (on a giant chalk board), Dress Up Photo

Booth, Bride and Groom Trivia. Just search

for these on Google for more information!

Parents

» On the day you may be excited about all your

friends or family you haven’t seen in a few

months or years, which is great, but remember

it is your wedding day, and it is as much of

a milestone for your parents as it is for you.

They may have been dreaming of this day

for years. So, set aside a small part of the day

for them – even if it’s just a few minutes. quambyestate.com.auPhoto: Kristy L Photography

Imagine the perfect secluded venue setting for your wedding day. At the Royal Hobart Golf Club, in Seven Mile Beach, overlooking a panoramic view of lush greens and

tranquil settings for your reception. Our venue holds up to 120 guests with ceremony options onsite and acres of photography opportunities, 5 minutes from the beach.

‘Imagine the most romantic wedding’

Other

» Take a few selfies. Or any photos for that

matter. Yes, you will have a photographer

and your guests will no doubt be recording

everything too, but if there’s something you

really want to remember and you’re not sure

if anyone else has captured it, go for it!

» Be magnanimous. Greet everyone with a smile,

even if it’s your cousin whom you haven’t

spoken to in three years because of something

she said during a previous family gathering.

» Remember why you’re there. Amid all the fun

and excitement, be sure to take it all in. Take

a moment to glance over at your spouse, the

one you’re committing your life to, and reflect

on the incredible journey that’s ahead of you.

Planning a wedding can be tough. It requires

time, thought, effort … and, oh yes – money. It’s

easy to forget the main point of it all – celebrating

your relationship and your commitment as

a couple. Although spare a thought for your

guests. They want to enjoy your wedding too,

and while you can probably never please all of

your guests, all of the time, it’s worth considering

what will make your day fun for them too.

1. SERVE GREAT FOOD AND BEVERAGES

First and foremost, the one thing you can be

assured your guests will remember about your

wedding is the food. Of all the purchases you

make for your wedding, ensure you save a

generous amount for great food and beverages.

There’s nothing worse than your guests going

home dissatisfied – or worse, hungry or thirsty.

"All of our guests raved about how good the food was. Nothing was too much trouble and Emily the events coordinator is such a pleasure to deal with. Would highly recommend

Barilla Bay for your next function or wedding! Thanks so much for the best day!"

2. YOUR PARTY IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE PEOPLE ENJOYING IT

Invite people who you are close to. If you invite

guests simply out of consideration for them, some

may feel as though they’re only there to ‘make up

numbers.’ It’s more enjoyable for everyone if they

know you well, that way you can spend the day/

evening with all the people you love, and have an

amazing time, with no-one feeling out of place,

and like they’ve been invited ‘just because.’

3. INCORPORATE SOME PERSONALITY

Incorporate your love story into your wedding

vows. Tell the story of how you came together

as a couple with some heartfelt, handwritten

wedding vows. Incorporate some help from

other family members and friends, and inject

some humour into the mix. Everyone loves

a good love story, and it gives your guests a

sliver of insight into each of your lives.

4. DON’T CRAM TOO MUCH IN

The worst thing at weddings is when everyone

is being summoned for something every 15

minutes while they’re having a good time.

On a similar note, try to limit the number

of speeches and toasts, so your guests have

plenty of time to chat, eat and dance.

5. AVOID ‘DOWN’ TIME

Where possible, keep the day’s events moving

to minimise ‘down’ time, such as waiting for the

ceremony to begin, or an extensive wait while you

are having photographs taken. Aim to keep your

guests entertained with movement of some kind.

Nothing sets the mood better than the newly married couple having fun and enjoying themselves.

6. HAVE FUN

It seems obvious, but your vibe is everyone

else’s vibe, so relax and have fun on your

wedding day. It doesn’t matter if it rains, or the

main course is served a little late. No one will

remember small hiccups when the wedding is

over. If the two of you are emotional, everyone

else will most likely be emotional. It is your day

so everyone will follow your lead. Have a couple

of drinks to settle the nerves, loosen up a bit and

let loose on the dance floor together! Nothing

sets the mood better than the newly married

couple having fun and enjoying themselves.

7. ARRANGE AN OPEN BAR

If you’ve previously asked your guests to pay their

way into the wedding, you may want to think

about paying for their drinks. Some may think

it slightly rude to make guests pay for all their

beverages throughout the night, on top of what

they’ve already paid to help celebrate with you

on your special day. So consider thanking them

for coming along and supporting your marriage,

by giving them access to drinks on the house.

8. SET ASIDE AN AREA FOR PEOPLE WHO DON’T LIKE LOUD MUSIC

Elderly guests, newborns, people with hearing

disabilities, and all those chatterboxes. What do

you do with them if you’ve already planned for a

perfect band or DJ with all your favourite tunes?

Some people don’t want to yell over loud

music, and most elderly people can be

sensitive to loud noise, so think about having

a separate area for them to access during the

night. It may be a separate room, it may be

on a deck outside, or a corner with a couple

of lounges. Whatever it is, it will be a polite

and considerate option for your guests.

Remember, your guests will be attending your

wedding to wish you well, and have a great time.

Don’t impose too many rules and regulations

at your wedding, keep the day’s events moving,

serve great food and beverages, provide

entertainment and let your guests do the rest! ♥

The wedding speechWhile the bride and groom are the big stars on their wedding day, when it comes to the speeches, it’s the best man, maid

of honour, father of the bride, and other family members who are usually called on to perform a ‘starring role’.

So how do you start that speech? Should you

really share that joke? How do you guarantee

laughs? Here are a few handy tips on how to

overcome your nerves, and deliver a speech

the bride and groom will love you for.

PURPOSE OF SPEECHES

Speeches give the bride and groom a chance

to thank those who have worked hard to

make their wedding day special, and it gives

family and friends a chance to let others

know a little more about the married couple.

If done well, speeches can be a great source

of entertainment and satisfaction. Rather than

seeing speeches as a burden, why not try to

make them one of the highlights of your day?

OVERCOMING NERVES

One of the biggest hurdles to a good wedding

speech is simply the thought of delivering

it. Few people like to stand up in front of a

crowd to deliver a speech –especially on such

an emotional day. The best piece of advice

is to keep the notion of delivering a wedding

speech in perspective. If you are the groom,

your speech is only a small part of what will be

one of the most fantastic days of your life.

The first thing to realise is that nerves are

inevitable and – this is the important point

– they aren’t necessarily a bad thing. Nerves

help to improve your performance.

Second, if you’re nervous when standing petrified

on a diving board, you only have to be brave

for an instant – the moment you take the leap,

gravity and exhilaration soon take over. It’s a

similar thing with public speaking – as soon as

you begin to speak, the nerves virtually disappear.

Third, remember you are among family and

friends – people that love and care about

you. If you make an error or fumble through

your speech, no one will care. They are there

to share your happiness, not to be a judging

panel for your public speaking abilities.

The next step to overcoming nerves is being

confident in the delivery of your speech.

How do you become more confident? Know

your speech. If you know your material

and how you want to deliver it, you’ll have

confidence in your speech and yourself.

THE THREE P’S

For any speech, reading or presentation, there

are three Ps to remember: Plan, Prepare and

Practice. Even if you just want to say a few words,

if you have planned, prepared and practiced

those words in advance, your ability to deliver

what you want to say will increase dramatically.

Whether it’s a speech or a reading, practicing

doesn’t mean just reading it over once or

twice. You need to practice saying it out

loud, several times. The more times you

read it out, the more you will understand

the rhythm of the piece, and which words

need certain intonation and emphasis.

Don’t be shy – use the mirrors around your

home to practice your speech, (although it

might be preferable to wait until you are alone!).

This helps you to become familiar with your

speech, and to watch your facial expressions and

posture. It also forces you to practice looking at

your audience, rather than down at your feet!

KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE

If it’s your wedding you will know who the

wedding guests are. If not, ask who’ll be there,

and who needs to be mentioned. Try and include

stories from both sides of the wedding aisle so

you connect with everyone in the room. The

more you connect, the better your audience will

react to you, and the more relaxed you will feel.

CUE CARDS

While some people can speak easily off the

cuff, most people will need to use some sort of

prompt to keep them on track. A set of palm-sized

cards to set out the main points and the order in

which you want to make your speech is a great

way of doing this. It also looks a lot neater than

ink on the inside of your hand, or a long piece

of paper which has become tattered from you

pulling it out of your pocket too many times.

Cue cards are especially handy when it comes

to thanking people, such as those who may

have helped with preparation, or guests that

have travelled from interstate or overseas for

the big day. Leaving someone out can risk

offending, so a written list of names is a must.

When using cue cards, don’t fall into the trap

of writing down every word you want to say, as

your speech may come across as stilted, rather

than coming from the heart. The cards are simply

there as a prompt, so just list key words or short

sentences to remind you of what you want

to say and the order that you want to say it.

STAND AND DELIVER

If you still fear nerves will be a major problem

for you when delivering your speech, then

pick up a few useful techniques for relaxing

before the big day. Deep breathing may or

may not work for you, but is worth a try.

Remember, if you go blank, don’t panic. Take

a deep breath, have a drink of water, collect

yourself and check your cue cards. If all

else fails just move on to the next point.

When delivering your speech, look up as often

as you can, and try to maintain open body

language (with arms uncrossed and shoulders

back). Maintaining frequent eye contact with your

audience is very important when delivering a

genuine speech. If you’re not keen on maintaining

eye contact with the whole room, start off with one

person. Ideally let a friend know that you will be

focusing on them whilst delivering your speech,

and this should help to keep you composed.

Try not to fidget or lean from one foot to

another, as it can be annoying for those people

listening to you. Try hard not to say ‘umm’ or

‘arr’ too many times, and most importantly don’t

forget to smile – after all, it’s a celebration!

You can also be prepared on the wedding day

by ensuring you know where in the room you

will be making your speech before the reception.

If you are using a microphone, make sure you

know how it works prior to your speech. Check

the height of it, and whether you need to adjust

it or not. This can even be done once the dinner

has started, or at a casual part of the reception

when people are chatting among themselves.

With plenty of practice behind you, all you have

to do is remember to put your speech notes

in your pocket on the big day. Ensure your

speech notes are not kept far away from a tissue

or handkerchief. Even if you think you are as

tough as nails, weddings can be tear-jerking

occasions. Emotion is great, but a runny nose is

not when you are holding a captive audience!

ALWAYS CHECK THAT GUESTS CAN HEAR YOU

No matter how good your speech is, the guests

won’t be able to hear if you are mumbling at 200

words per minute! Speak calmly, and don’t be

afraid to ask people at the beginning of the speech

whether they can hear you in all parts of the room.

SPEECH STRUCTURE

At its simplest a wedding speech can be divided

into three parts, the introduction, the main body

and the conclusion. The introduction is usually

a response (such as the groom responding on

behalf of the bride and himself or the best man

responding on behalf of the bridesmaids).

The middle comprises anecdotes and thanks,

and the conclusion is usually a toast.

Ideally the speech should focus on one compelling

idea – it’s one gourmet dish, not an all-you-

can-eat buffet! There’s no need to include every

single story about the bride or groom, but it

should include one or two relevant ones.

Speak for around 5 minutes, unless it is an

extremely formal wedding, then you might want

to extend it by a little. Stick to the main points

when preparing your speech and keep it flowing.

A long and tedious speech can really slow down

a fantastic celebration and make guests restless.

If you find grammar and speech writing

difficult, there are plenty of publications and

websites available on what to include in

your wedding speech. These can help you

not only with the structure of your speech,

but also with opening and closing lines.

STRUCTURE TIPS

1. Warm up with some self-

deprecating comments.

2. Learn a few jokes – these should be scattered

judiciously throughout your speech.

3. Build your speech around one funny or

touching anecdote, and make one main point.

4. Finish with a joke and, of course, a toast.

5. Practice, practice, practice! Try to get

someone to listen to you and give feedback.

The most important thing to remember is to

have fun. Once you get through it, you’ll be

surprised at the new found confidence you’ll

feel at having spoken in front of a crowd.

You’ll also feel proud at having performed

an important task on a special occasion.

THE TOAST

As you finish your speech, and just before

you raise a toast, ensure that everyone

has something in their glass. Go with

a line such as, ‘Ladies and gentleman,

thank you for listening to me, can I ask

you to charge your glasses, as I’d love to

propose a toast to my wonderful friend …’

WHO MAKES A WEDDING SPEECH?

Traditionally, it was the father of the bride,

the groom and the best man. Modern

weddings can include more or less

speakers than this. For example, it is not

unusual for a bride, the maid of honour,

or a mother of the bride to make a speech.

Your selection of speakers will also reflect

your own family situation. If the bride’s

father is deceased, for example, she may

choose her mother or another special

family member or friend to say a few words.

Traditional speech etiquette can work a

treat (and it might work wonderfully for

you), but consider your options. Ideally

you won’t want more than four speakers

(with clear guidelines on expected

speech durations), so choose wisely.

It’s also a lovely idea to add a quirky

speaker into your speech line-up. Someone

who has no etiquette and formalities to

162 WEddInGS tASMAnIA 163 9 to 12 MontHS

Page 84: THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO WEDDINGS IN TASMANIA › wp-content › uploads › WT... · Connect with Tasmania’s leading wedding suppliers The Weddings Tasmania Planner App is the ultimate

follow, and who can immediately put

a smile on people’s faces. A speech by

your 80 year-old grandad, for example.

Another idea might be to choose a young

speaker, maybe a teenage niece’s ideas

on love and marriage, or a Winnie the

Pooh passage read by your pageboy.

Another idea is to include a joint ‘Mr and

Mrs’ speech. When a bride and groom give

a joint speech it immediately says ‘we’re a

team’. It also creates a comedy double act

and gets people laughing. The pressure

is taken off the groom, and no one has to

speak ‘on behalf’ of anyone else. It also

means both the bride and groom get to be

nice about their families, compliment the

in-laws and say a big thank you to everyone

for being part of their wedding. Ideally

Mr and Mrs speeches should be written

together, or one member of the couple could

write the first draft of the speech and the

other member could ‘tweak’ it later on. The

speech should be practised and delivered

together, and a decision should be made as

to whether one member of the couple will

play ‘the joker’, and the other ‘the straight

man or woman’ during the speech. Finally,

make sure there are two microphones

available at the venue if needed.

ADD SOME HUMOUR

Laughter creates a warm and memorable

atmosphere so don’t be afraid to use a bit of

humour in your speech. It is sure to be a hit

as long as you feel comfortable including

it, and it’s in good taste. Remember:

1. Revealing overly personal facts about

the bride or groom or their past is

not a good idea, especially when

both have their families present.

2. Don’t assume a bride and groom know

everything about each other – a bride

may not want to hear about her partner’s

past conquests on her wedding day.

3. Any overly risqué one liners need to

be judged according to the gathered

crowd. What may be a real crowd pleaser

for the younger guests may fizzle

with older guests or grandparents.

4. A fail-safe option for adding humour

is some light teasing of the person/s

who you’re making a speech about.

Think of silly things that will make the

room smile. Bring up amusing events

where they were silly, but lovable.

ALCOHOL

Another big tip is to watch your alcohol

consumption. Having a few too many

to relax can be an easy trap to fall into if

you are a reluctant public speaker. On the

wedding day it’s not unusual for a person

to feel nervous and skip meals (especially

if you are the groom), so even a couple

of drinks can go straight to your head.

As a rule one or two to calm the nerves

is fine, but save the rest for afterwards.

While it may be annoying having to wait

until late in the day/evening to finally

relax and enjoy a few drinks, slurring

your speech, swaying or being unable to

see your cue cards may leave the wrong

impressions etched in everyone’s minds. ♥

Try and include stories from both sides of the wedding aisle so you connect with everyone in the room. The more you connect, the better your audience will react to you, and the more relaxed you will feel.

Things to do 6 to 9 months out

Six months before your wedding day is a

great time to craft a wedding menu for the

most memorable dinner party of your life.

As you plan each course, keep in mind that the

colour, flavour, temperature and taste of each

course should be well balanced, and that each

course should also complement the next.

Then, consider the style of food that

suits you both as a couple.

Consider the season. The time of year can play

a big part in what goes on your wedding menu.

Winter may not be the season for cold smoked

salmon; nor is an outdoor wedding in January

the occasion for a slow-cooked beef stew.

Regarding the visual appeal … remember, you

taste first with your eyes, so ensure that every

course is as visually appealing as possible. Start

collecting inspiring images and articles of food

and cocktail recipes that you love, along with

food presentation that you find attractive.

Go local! There are many people who take culinary

holidays, travelling through countries in search

of the local fare. Turn your wedding reception

into its own culinary vacation by creating a

menu featuring local Tasmanian specialties.

Finally, remember that sometimes ‘less is more’.

The simplest foods presented in a generous

fashion may have a more memorable impact

than a wide variety of small servings. Think

about offering one or two spectacular dishes.

In the following section we have listed our

suggestions for the upcoming tasks you may

wish to tackle in the 6 to 9 month period. ♥

While doing a hair trial may cost you a bit more, it may be a very good investment to ensure your peace of mind.

To have a hair trial, or not to … that is the question.

A hair trial is a great way to ensure your ‘crowning

glory’ looks amazing, and can stand up to all the

activities that your wedding day will dish out.

After all, we do live in Tasmania, and on your

wedding day you may be faced with hot sun,

wind or rain. Will your hair have to withstand the

rigours of dancing and revelling, and will you

choose to wear a veil or not? There’s a few things

to consider, when considering your hairstyle.

While doing a hair trial may cost you a little more,

it may be a very good investment to ensure your

peace of mind. A hair trial will give you an idea of

what you can expect your hair to look like on your

wedding day, and it minimises the chances of a

hair ‘malfunction’. After all, on your wedding day,

you may be too nervous and preoccupied to give

ideal directions for what you want your hair to look

like. So, make a day of it, head out on the town, and

give your hairstyle a trial run before your big day.

And of course, the following section

shows a host of other suggested tasks

for the upcoming period. ♥

Things to do 30 days out

This is the time for final preparations and

checking all services and tasks are on track. The

month before your wedding will be packed with

appointments and obligations, so make your life

easier by using our easy-to-follow task lists for

the final 30 days leading up to your wedding.

In addition to the tasks list, there are one or two

things you might want consider to ensure your

wedding day runs like proverbial clockwork.

Organising your wedding day timeline is such

a consideration, and takes the pride of place as

a must mention item. No matter how reliable or

punctual everyone is, you’ll want to put together

a wedding day timeline to keep things on track.

Ensure that all of the relevant vendors, family

and wedding party receive a copy of the

timeline, and include a little extra padding in

your schedule – because mishaps can occur. ♥

Your wedding day is almost here. With only one

day to go, try to stay calm and enjoy your last

moments of singledom. Tomorrow will be a great

day! Don’t get upset by any small glitches – after

all nothing in life is ever perfect. The important

thing is to relax and enjoy this time of your

life. Take some time out for a few nice-to-do

activities today. These may include a manicure,

perhaps a massage, or a nice lunch with the

wedding party or friends. There’s thousands of

ideas to choose from … so have a fantastic day.

On the day of your wedding, remember to

take some time out with your new husband

or wife, and your closest loved ones. ♥

All sorts of emergencies can occur at weddings.

While we hope you won’t experience any of these,

it’s always better to be prepared for the worst.

Here we have listed what we believe to be the

ultimate list of just-in-case emergency items.

Ask one of your attendants to pack the items in

a bag and stash it in a safe but easy-to-access

place during the wedding ceremony. ♥
