Achieving clear and measurable benefits

Future 500's SEED (Sustainable Energy andEnvironmental Demand) Initiative is a supply-chainleadership program that seeks to advance markets forsustainable technological alternatives to petroleum, suchas biofuels and bioplastics.

These disruptive, innovative technologies hold greatenvironmental potential but also raise a new set ofcomplex systemic issues. To address the root causes ofthese issues, one must develop a roadmap tosustainability for such technologies before they becomewell established in the marketplace. The most effectiveway to do this is through multi-sector stakeholdercollaborations that harness the collective wisdom ofdiverse groups along the supply chain to address thesecomplex challenges. In this roundtable session, learn howFuture 500 facilitates this process; How unusualcorporate/NGO alliances are formed; How long-timeadversaries can find common ground; How governmentcan encourage innovation; and how positive incrementalchange has been achieved. The Future 500, Lance Funston, Marketing &Communications Development Consultant

• Why top down values matter.

• How to know if you have the right factory partner.

• What to do when you encounter resistance.

• The golden combination: internal training and third partyaudits.

• Overview of the African Organic Food & Fiber Initiativeand how we help facilitate inverted integrationpartnerships between our member companies

• Some real-world examples – case studies: The North Face and Chinese goose down AK International and Levi’s organic cotton jeans Patagonia and Teijin recycling polyester underwear

• A primer on inverted integration – retailers andwholesale brands collaborating directly with rawmaterial producers (e.g. farmers)

• The importance of collaborative planning – sharingbrand growth forecasts and agricultural productionforecasts

• Commitment – what it really means and how it is criticalto success

• Tiered contracting – retailer and raw material producernegotiate preferred pricing and terms for the retailersvendors

• Minimizing double-marginalization on organic and fairtrade price premiums as agricultural goods areprocessed and manufactured into finished consumergoods by monitoring and information sharing betweenretailer and raw material producer

The Hard and Soft Sides of ComplianceThe time has come to unify how manufacturers view, control and assess internal legal compliance and CSRcompliance.Increasingly anti-corruption conventions - UN, OECD,OAS, AU and others - are being ratified and implementedas home country law The US, and other countries post 9/11, use national lawto govern international behavior of their citizens Enforcement expectations and recognition of injuriescaused to communities and individuals Legal compliance and CSR compliance are 2 sides of thesame coin Communicating, training, monitoring and auditingagainst compliance standards an increasing burden onmanufacturers and suppliers Uniform approach increases ability to reach more peoplemore often, audit more frequently and meet the broaderrange of objectivesDykema, Richard G. Goetz, Leader of theInternational Practice Group

Preparing for the Next Generation: Thinkingoutside the box about today’s supply chainmonitoring models. You Get What You Pay For: How Supply Chain PracticesThwart Compliance Goals and What to Do About It• The disappointing track record of factory monitoring • Debating root causes, avoiding the obvious: good

conditions cost more • Price pressure and short-term contracts encourage

non-compliance and undermine the efforts ofmonitors

• Disciplining suppliers: probation for labor rightsviolations, the death penalty for price increases

• Alternatives: rewarding compliance, making thesupply chain safe for high labor standards

• Modest impact of improved conditions on wholesaleand retail prices

Facing Reality

Poor management systems, isolated documentationerrors, intentional or unintentional falsification -- thedebate goes on. Join a multi-stakeholder mini-forum onthe key influential factors impacting supplier disclosuretoday.

If buyers continue to buy in the face of non-compliancereports, what incentives do factory owners/managershave to disclose all their information during audits?

What are the benefits to factories to "be in compliance"?

Ignorance or wilful deception? Do factories trulyunderstand the local laws that affect their business, or dothey not care and are happy to deceive customers andauditors alike?

What is the role of local government in educating factoryowners/managers, and in enforcing local law?

Have retailers and brands taken over enforcement of locallaws thereby giving governments "a pass" in abdicatingtheir responsibilities?
