Staff photo/BENJAMIN PRIEBEToronto police officers canvas door-to-door Monday morning looking for information related to the fatal shooting of a pregnant woman Sunday night in the John Garland Boulevard and Jamestown Crescent area.

CYNTHIA REASON [email protected]

A baby delivered by emer-gency caesarean section after its mother was fatally shot in north Etobicoke late Sunday, night is now listed in stable condition.

During a media briefing at

23 Division Monday morning, Det. Sgt. Mike Carbone of the Homicide Squad identified the baby’s expectant mother – who was five months pregnant when she was shot and killed – as Candice Rochelle Bobb, 35 of Malton.

Bobb, Carbone said, was one of four occupants of a vehicle

returning from a men’s league basketball game in the city’s east end, when they were shot at in the Jamestown Crescent and John Garland Boulevard area around 11 p.m. Sunday night.

“As the vehicle was stopped on John Garland, a person or persons unknown commenced

shooting at the vehicle. The vehicle was shot several times, striking the deceased, who was seated in the back seat,” he said, noting that none of the other occupants were injured.

“None of the occupants exited the vehicle and the driver sped away, where they attended

A sea of hundreds of Toronto firefighters wearing their dress black and white gloves stood solemnly with family and friends Monday morning to pay final respects to their fallen colleague Sara Rosen, whom one remembered as “genu-ine, selfless, smiling and full of life.”

Mourners packed Benjamin Park Memorial Chapel on Steeles Avenue West near Keele Street in North York for Rosen’s 90-minute funeral.

Jackie Gaistman, Rosen’s partner, called her “my com-pass.”

“Sara is the fiercest, most genuine, brutally honest, inspi-rational, joyful, free-spirited, soulful, generous, strong, deter-mined, feisty, loyal, courageous person I’ve ever met,” Gaistman said, calling her his wife. “Sara loved her parents and her brother Mark with every ounce of her heart. Mark is living testa-ment to Sara’s love, generosity, caring and courage. She was, and still is, such a hero.”

Twelve years ago, Rosen donated her kidney to her brother, Mark. Since then, the

city

RAHUL GUPTA [email protected]

It’s another busy construction season for Toronto.

That means even more road clo-sures, traffic tie-ups and headaches for commuters and residents.

But while infrastructure work may seem on the surface to have been hastily organized, planning begins several years in advance, requiring coordination not just between city agencies, but by private owners of utilities as well.

“We plan several years ahead so that everyone’s needs are being met,” said Jeff Climans, the city’s director of major capital infrastructure coordina-tion. “Major projects can be planned many years in advance and often need to be.”

Climans and his staff of 19 work on revolving five-year planning windows, coordinating the city’s construction plans with Toronto Water, the TTC and various private and public agen-cies which may also need to engage in infrastructure repairs so that “if a road is being torn up, it’s only torn up once”.

The department is currently deter-mining 2021’s planning needs, moving on to 2022 once this year is through. In fact, chances are great any major city works project requiring months of closures, from replacing ancient sewer watermains to road rebuild-ing and re-surfacing, had years of planning and coordination behind the scenes.

It wasn’t always the case; the depart-ment for infrastructure coordination has only been around for six years. Climans admits the past approach was more reactive, limited to the shar-ing of project spreadsheets. But with better technology, it’s now possible to map out a project and automatically determine if there’s a red flag or any conflicts with another project, even if no communication about the work has yet taken place.

That allows the department then to attempt to soften the edges of a plan,

and ensure everyone is on the same page before the work is scheduled to start, Climans said. Sometimes that means providing greater incentives, or in rarer cases, withholding private construction permits so city work

can proceed.“There is a good deal of negotia-

tion that takes place, and one of the interesting challenges that comes about is the fact each organization has had to realize their programs have to

give way to something else,” he said. “We have to ensure organizations don’t plan in isolation”.

This year, he said the city has come to the realization there’s an “upper limit” to how many closures resi-

dents can suffer in a year, leading to a deferral of some work so that more essential projects can be done. Last year for example, several city projects were deferred until after the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.

On Gerrard Street, at the intersec-tion of Church Street, sub-contracted work crews are busy replacing 135-year-old watermains and sewer pipes from Yonge Street to Sherbourne Street. Later on in the summer, road reconstruction will commence on the same stretch of Gerrard, including a complete re-surfacing of the street and surrounding sidewalks, new lane markings including bike lanes, trees and better lighting.

City spokesperson Michael D’Andrea said the work on Gerrard alone has involved consultations with Toronto Water, the transportation services department, the local BIA and Ryerson University. The work is being done, he said, when a majority of Ryerson’s student population isn’t on campus, meaning less disruption.

“We integrated the needs of all our clients to one single project ultimately to reduce and minimize any conflicts and disruptions to the community,” said D’Andrea, director of the city’s engineering and construction ser-vices.

In order to get the word out to the public, detailed construction signs are posted at every site, he said. The signs were revamped to clearly indicate the nature of work taking place, the dura-tion and other important details.

“They’re descriptive, written in plain-speak and with a large font,” D’Andrea said. “It gives people infor-mation which was currently lack-ing.”

In addition, the blue and white signs also display a numerical code, indicating who to contact in case of concern or complaint.

“When you contact 311 and give them the code, it goes directly to the manager of this project,” he said. “I don’t think there’s any other munici-pality out there which gives you that kind of level of detail.”

MAPPING IT OUTDrivers may not realize, but planning starts years in advance of road closures, traffic tie-ups

Staff photos/RAHUL GUPTA

Above, a revamped city road sign provides details of a road work affecting the intersection of Dundas and Bay streets on May 12. The new signs are part of the city’s effort to better inform the public about ongoing con-struction projects. Bottom left, workers cut sewer pipe on a worksite at the intersection of Gerrard and Church streets. The work involves replacing 100-year-old underground sewer watermains and is scheduled to continue until the fall. Bottom right, lane closures and shared space is the reality at Gerrard and Church where a major road work project is taking place for the next several months.

If recent history has taught us nothing else, let us remem-ber this: that left to their own devices, Toronto’s political leadership is about as good with a budget as a pack of 12 year olds with their parents’ credit cards.

It had always been so, at least within the lifespan of amalgamated Toronto.

In 1997, Mel Lastman was elected the city’s first mayor on a promise of a three-year property tax freeze – delivered at the same time as the city was reconstituting itself into the largest municipality in the country at the behest, but without the support of the provincial government.

Lastman’s first term set a tone that subsequent councils have maintained: namely, that marginal property tax increases are the most injurious thing a government might inflict upon homeowners – about an equivalent evil to reduc-ing services upon which those homeowners had come to rely and limiting promises of improved ser-

vice to come. And so over the years,

council has approved proj-ects, maintained services and kept property tax increases slim to none.

This week, Toronto’s city manager Peter Wallace brought out another in what is developing into a series of despatches, delineating what to many has been obvious for years. Toronto has been able to maintain the fiction of a growing city and a low property tax environment thanks to factors that are either entirely beyond its control (a booming real estate market that pours in revenue through the municipal land transfer tax) or measures of which council should frankly be ashamed (approving capi-tal projects for future years with no means of financ-ing). At some point, very soon, the boom’s going to end and the projects will

have to be built.Wallace first pointed this

out to councillors in the fall shortly after he took the job. That early report gave Mayor John Tory a small amount of political cover, to propose that the city maintain a 0.5 per cent levy on the property tax bill currently in place to help finance the Scarborough subway, to finance more transit infrastructure.

This report, coming to next week’s Executive Committee, provides an imperative for more of the same: a debate on what other ways we might find, to support ourselves in the style to which we’ve become accustomed. To whit: revenue tools.

These conversations haven’t gone well in the past. In the last term of Council, politicians balked at supporting any revenue tools, even as they voted to go forward on subway expansion in Scarborough. Former mayor David Miller was able to get a couple of major revenue tools

through council, but the battle over the land trans-fer tax and vehicle regis-tration tax nearly broke council.

Will it be any different now? It’s not encouraging. Toronto council this term has shown just as little appetite for long-term financial planning as ever. Under the leadership of Tory, council approved a billion-dollar rebuild of the Gardiner Expressway’s elevated lanes, against expert advice.

The Scarborough subway, absent all but one stop, remains on the books. And this week, Tory made it clear himself that one thing he won’t support is any significant increase to Toronto’s bargain-base-ment property tax rates.

There’s no doubt about it: the arrested 12 year olds on Toronto council have a lot of growing up to do.

Think safety first this Victoria Day weekend

The long weekend is just about here, and many of us will hit the road for this Victoria Day holiday.

No matter when you go – be it in the city or on a longer road trip to a cottage or to pitch a tent – your main focus should be arriving at your destination alive.

The excitement of having a few days off from the everyday sometimes causes people to throw common sense out the window (along with some litter – don’t do that by the way). While you and other drivers snake through slow traffic, you can expect the Ontario Provincial Police to be keeping a close eye on how you drive.

Last year, a total of 27 motor-cyclists and four passengers died, with 17 of those motorcycle driv-ers reported as driving properly at the time of the crash, the OPP reports.

While speed and loss of control also played a role in the deaths, the OPP is cautioning both

motorcyclists and other drivers to do a better job of sharing the road.

These weekends away from our routine don’t have to be reckless. Speeding, careless lane changes and unnecessary risk taking can cause more than a rush – it can end your life or someone else’s. If you follow the rules of the road, and the person driving next to you does the same, along with the vehicle ahead of you and the other trailing a safe distance behind, there’s no reason this shouldn’t be a holiday to remember – for all the right reasons.

And if you want to celebrate the birthday of the late Queen Victoria with fireworks – be safe about it.

The Canada Safety Council believes it’s best to enjoy fireworks at a show put on by professionals such as the City of Toronto set for Monday night at Ashbridges Bay Park.

But if you’re going to be your own pyrotechnic pro-tege, follow these tips:

• Read the instructions, cautions and warnings on each firework item.

• Set up outdoors in a clear, open space. Light fireworks on a hard, flat and level surface to ensure stability.

• Spectators should be at a safe distance.• Only adults (18 years or over) should handle the

fireworks.• If you are impaired, do not handle fireworks. For more safety tips, visit www.canadasafetycoun-

Toronto city staff are moving forward with community con-sultation on a proposal for a sizable mixed-use development in central Etobicoke, following Etobicoke York Community Council’s greenlight of the project’s preliminary report last week.

The application for 2 Gibbs Rd. (which hugs the border of wards 3 and 5 near Hwy. 427 and Bloor Street West) requests a zoning bylaw amendment to permit a total of 1,500 resi-dential units on the property – including 420 rental units in two 10-storey apartment build-ings and three condo towers of 46, 37 and 31 storeys.

The phased development would first see the construc-tion of the two rental buildings (with retail uses at grade) on the eastern portion of the site, fol-lowed in subsequent phases by the three larger condo towers above a five-storey podium containing retail and office space, as well as 14 townhouse

units, on the western portion of the site.

A new private road accessed from Gibbs Road would pro-vide vehicular access to the proposed development, which would also include a total of 1,713 parking spaces within a below- and above-grade

garage. The community consulta-

tion meeting to discuss the pro-posal has been scheduled for Monday, June 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the council cham-bers at Etobicoke Civic Centre, 399 The West Mall.

Toronto police have arrested two men and one woman in connection with alleged illegal gaming at two north Etobicoke nail salons.

Police conducted the “Project Lotto” investigation in recent months, initiated after complaints from the

community and city bylaw officers, police said.

Police said the alleged illegal gaming took place at Lena’s Nails at Albion Mall, and Nails for You, 6201 Finch Ave. W. just north of Albion in the Mount Olive-Silverstone-Jamestown area.

T h e a l l e g e d i l l e g a l gaming involved the use of Ontario Lottery and

Gaming Corporation lottery numbers, said Toronto police 23 Division Sgt. Brian Beadman.

The alleged lottery scheme is a first in alleged illegal gaming known to police, Beadman said.

“ I t ’s a n u n i q u e

scheme. It’s a new trend we observed,” said

Beadman, noting police are famil-iar with other illegal gaming schemes, such as cards and gaming

machines.“O LG s u f f e r s

community charities and hospitals OLG supports.”

Last Friday, 39 officers executed six search war-rants in businesses, homes and financial institutions and seized nearly $90,000 in proceeds, police said.

“Project Lotto” was led by 23 Division community response unit, the Toronto police forfeiture unit, and

the Ontario Provincial Police organized crime enforce-ment bureau gaming unit. The investigation was sup-ported by 31 Division officers from forensic identification services, TAVIS ( Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy) and employees from Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of

St. Eugene Catholic School students and staff celebrated the start of construction on their new school addition with a sod-turning ceremony last Friday morning.

When complete, the addi-tion to the Etobicoke school will accommodate an extra 294

pupils, resulting in the removal off all six portables currently on the site at 30 Westroyal Rd.

Three full-day kindergarten (FDK) rooms, nine classrooms, one Special Education room and a new gymnasium will be added, as well as a new FDK playground.

The new and enlarged St. Eugene will also allow space for students who are being redi-rected from nearby All Saints Catholic School as a result of recent boundary review.

The campaign, which started Tuesday and ends Monday, May 23, consists of Ontario Provincial Police, Toronto Police Service, York Regional Police and

Officers will be conduct-ing targeted traffic enforce-ment in and around the city on Hwys. 427, 401, the Don Valley Parkway and

Two Etobicoke students and one from Bloor West were named the grand prize winners of a recent Toronto District School Board-hosted (TDSB) digital photography contest.

With a community theme, the inaugural competition

encouraged students in grades 1 to 8 from 23 schools in the TDSB’s West Region 6 family of schools to capture images of their communi-ties.

A panel of judges selected Grace Guthrie, (Grade 8 stu-dent at Runnymede Junior

Middle School), Grace White, (Grade 5 student at Étienne Brûlé Junior School) and Oliver Wright, (Grade 1 student at Sunnylea Junior School), as the contest’s grand prize winners. Each took home a Nikon D3300 D-SLR with 18-55mm VR lens kit.

The Hay Stock Music Festival will make its first appearance in Amos Waites Park next month.

The event is an annual music festival hosted by the students of Royal House of Music, now renamed Oak Centre for Creative Learners.

Hay Fest will change venues this year. The school’s Oak Learners will take over

the stage at the Mimico-by-the-Lake area park Sunday, June 12 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Everyone is invited to cel-ebrate the musical achieve-ments of students from the Oak Centre, while enjoying the surroundings of the lake-side community.

Families are encouraged to bring their own seating (such as folding chairs or blankets), to watch each student take a

turn in the spotlight perform-ing a piece he or she has been working on with a teachers during weekly lessons.

Local businesses will also get in on the festival by pro-viding food and refreshments for the young musicians and their families.

For more information or to RSVP, email [email protected] or call 416-820-5233.

hospital. Attempts by medical staff were made to revive the victim, but they were unsuccessful.”

An emergency caesarean sec-tion was performed on Bobb, and her baby was then transferred to a local trauma centre, where it is now listed in stable condition, Carbone reported.

At just 12 hours into the inves-tigation, Carbone said it was still too soon to comment on a possible motive for the shooting, but noted that it appeared that the vehicle Bobb was travelling in was tar-geted.

“It’s still very early in the investi-gation, but I can say that for some reason only known to the offender at this point, I can say that that vehicle was the target,” he said, adding that none of the vehicle’s occupants were previously known to police.

Etobicoke North Councillor Vincent Crisanti, who was also on hand at Monday’s media briefing, called the shooting “inexcusable and unacceptable.”

“Being concerned doesn’t nearly describe how we really feel – we’re completely distraught by what hap-pened late last night,” he said. “For a mother to lose her life and not be able to see her child born, what’s worse than that?”

Those sentiments were shared by many in the Jamestown com-munity Monday morning, some of whom – like Rhonda Adonis – called on police to step up their patrols in the area.

“Police need to start doing their job and they need to stop neglect-ing black people, because we’re all human beings,” said Adonis, who’s lived in the Jamestown com-munity for more than a year. “I lost a brother to gun violence one year ago on Friday, so I know what it’s like to lose somebody by gun violence. That this innocent young lady lost her life – it’s so unfair.”

Increase communIty patrols

Local police, she continued, need to spend more time in the commu-nity instead of just responding to emergency calls in the area.

“Police need to get out into the community so they can see what’s going on. That’s the only way we’re going to solve what’s going on here with the guns,” she said.

“If it keeps happening like this and they’re not catching nobody, and they’re depending on the com-munity to help, how are they able to do their job? It’s just going to keep getting worse and worse and

worse.” Responding to that criticism,

Supt. Ron Taverner of 23 Division said community members’ claims to media that police have “aban-doned” the Jamestown community are untrue.

polIce ‘outraged’

“First of all, I sympathize with (residents), and we, too, are out-raged at what’s going on. Obviously, we can’t be there 24/7, but we’re trying to deploy as many resources as we possibly can to this particu-lar area and other areas that are problematic with regards to this type of violence – the gun violence,” he said.

His officers at 23 Division, Taverner added, are currently undertaking a number of initiatives in the Jamestown community and other areas “to try and target these violent offenders.”

Taverner also noted that there has been a “substantial upgrade” to surveillance cameras within the Jamestown Toronto Community Housing complex outside of which Sunday’s shooting took place.

“We’re very hopeful they’ll be helpful in this investigation,” he said, noting that police will be reviewing those tapes for evidence over the course of the investiga-tion.

In the meantime, Taverner and Carbone said police from 23 Division continue to canvas neighbours in the area for witnesses to this “cowardly” shooting.

“Obviously, it’s disturbing. However, my appeal here is to reach out to as many witnesses as possible. We believe someone will come forward and provide us information that will lead us to the offenders here,” Carbone said.

CYNTHIA REASON [email protected]

Public outrage will not be enough to solve the recent murder of a pregnant woman in Jamestown, nor to stem the increasing tides of gun violence on our city streets, according to Toronto’s top cop.

“Many people over the last few days have said that ‘something must be done.’ That is not enough,” Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders said during a media briefing at police headquarters on Tuesday – less than two days after the shooting death of 35-year-old expectant mother Candice Rochelle Bobb.

“We must translate that genuine anger and concern into tangible action that increases the ability of our city to beat those who commit to cause violence.”

Bobb was one of four occupants of a vehicle returning from a men’s league basketball game in the city’s east end Sunday, May 15, when they were shot at by a still-unknown person or persons in the Jamestown Crescent and John Garland Boulevard area of north Etobicoke shortly before 11 p.m.

Five months pregnant, Bobb was struck in the chest and rushed to a nearby hospital, where she died – but not before undergoing an emer-gency caesarean section to deliver her baby, who remains in stable condition after being transferred

to a trauma centre.Bobb’s murder not only marks

Toronto’s 29th homicide of 2016, but perhaps one of the city’s most shocking, Saunders said.

“The tragedy of a pregnant woman shot to death, while medical staff are fighting to save the life of her unborn child, has reminded us of the threats we face,” he said.

“We have seen this year in Toronto very significant increases in homicide and other gun-related crimes.”

While still maintaining that Toronto is still the safest urban city in North America, Saunders noted the city’s homicide tally of 29 for 2016 so far is a marked increase from this time last year, when Toronto had just 15 murders in the books.

He also noted police have seized 250 firearms to date in 2016 – more than 100 of them handguns.

What police need to help them solve some of those murders and to assist them in removing more of those guns from the streets, Saunders said, is cooperation from residents in areas where gun violence is most prevalent.

“There are people out there that have information. They have infor-mation right now and, for whatever reason, they’re not giving that infor-mation – either because they’re too afraid or they’re supporting the people that are carrying firearms out there...” he said.

Saunders’ press conference on

Tuesday afternoon came on the heels of the release earlier in the day of an open letter from the Toronto Police Association (TPA) expressing concern that “the safest city in North America has a gun violence problem.”

“While politicians and some community groups are focused on reducing the cost of policing, there has been a significant increase in violent crime,” wrote TPA President Mike McCormack, who represents 8,000 uniform and civilian members of the police force in Toronto.

“Compared to a year ago, shootings have increased 61 per cent. Shooting deaths have increased 217 per cent. And typically gun violence only gets worse in the summer.”

Warning of the “growing discon-nect” between the police and the community, the TPA letter – titled ‘Shouldn’t Public Safety be a Public Matter?’ – states that its association members are 100 per cent committed to building mutual trust and respect with the communities they serve and protect.

While Saunders said he read the letter and “didn’t think much of it”, he agreed that more resources need to be put into the communities where firearms are most prevalent.

public outrage will not be enough to stop criminals

Residents need to step up to end gun violence, says police Chief Saunders

Courtesy/YOUTUBEToronto police Chief Mark Saunders takes questions from reporters during a press conference at Toronto police headquarters on Tuesday in response to the recent spate of gun violence in the city.

transit

Two public meetings are coming up this month to discuss transit proposals for the waterfront.

Waterfront Toronto and city officials will present preliminary design and planning concepts for possible new, yet currently unfunded, transit routes which may include the East Bayfront LRT.

Two meetings are scheduled for the study, with the first taking place Wednesday, May 25 at Brigantine Room inside Harbourfront Centre start-ing at 6 p.m.

Another meeting takes place in Mimico the next day at John English Junior Middle School at 95 Mimico Ave. at 6 p.m.

wLAST CHANCE TO TAKE IN TUNNEL VISION

The Tunnel Vision subway exhibit is down to its final month.

The installation inside St. Lawrence Market features photographs, maps and other artifacts from nearly

100 years of transit plan-ning, dating well before the opening of the city’s first subway stations.

Organized by the Toronto Transportation Society, the exhibit, which opened in February, closes June 11.

wMOVE OVER UBER, HERE COMES APPLE

The legalization of Uber is well at hand, but could another tech giant one day enter the ride-hailing market?

It certainly seems like Apple is interested, with the company announcing last week it is investing $1 bil-lion in a Chinese competi-tor of Uber, and acting as a “strategic” investor to the company, Didi Chuxing.

It’s certainly conceivable Apple will never operate a ride-hailing service on its own.

But the company’s deep pockets combined with the burgeoning growth of the industry could mean there’s a day when Apple-branded vehicles are providing pri-vate rides in this city, and rivalling Uber in popularity.

wLONGTIME TTC HEAD OF PLANNING HAS RETIRED

The TTC’s longtime head of planning has finally called it a day after a career spanning more than three decades.

For 21 years of his career with the city, Mitch Stambler was the com-mission’s chief planning official, having a hand in developing transit expan-sion projects and plans.

Stambler had a direct role creating the Transit City light rail network plan, and he was also part of planning for the Spadina subway extension.

Go from boring to affordably beautiful in the backyardInterior design trends continue to straddle the out-doors – and nowhere is it more exciting than in this year’s designs for the perfect patio oasis. No matter whether your outdoor space is large or small, there are now more options than ever to replicate the comfort and beauty found inside our homes with the latest products.

Lifestyle expert, Janette Ewen, partnered with The Home Depot Canada to share some of this year’s top trends in outdoor décor:1. Layered Patterns. Add dimension and texture

to your outdoor space by layering attractive pat-terns. Outdoor rugs are a great way to incorpo-rate both – they’re now available in more designs

and colours than ever before, so you can find something that suits your space while adding comfort and warmth on a cool evening. You can also get creative and DIY by spray-painting pat-terns with stencils onto an existing rug.Would you like to play with patterns without

making a huge investment? Try using wrapping pa-per – like bold stripes or chevron - as a table runner.2. Canadiana. Get nostalgic with traditional cot-

tage décor like vintage canoe paddles, lake-signage and found objects. And don’t forget the staple Muskoka-style chairs. While the wooden ones give a more classic look, they are also avail-able in more modern sleek designs and shades

– and in kid-size.3. Rustic English Garden. Go Downton Abbey with

soft touches of pastels and Victorian-era design. Think about patios filled with flowers, herbs and oversized wicker furniture with plush cushions.

4. Nautical Accents. Thick stripes and preppy prints in classic reds and blues can add a hint of seaside splendour to any outdoor space. Many cush-ions and pillows feature vibrant, fade-resistant colours and are made with high-quality weather-resistant materials so you no longer have to sac-rifice style for staying power.

5. Whimsical Oasis. Incorporate lighting in mason jars or creative floral patterns to turn your terrace

into an al fresco space ready for any soirée.— www.newscanada.com

Jenny slaps her small hands over her ears to block the sound of her veterinarian’s voice.

She can’t believe their family dog, Dolly, has cancer.

The young girl is under-going chemotherapy herself – “I know the ‘c-word’ all too well,” she says as she vows to support her best friend, just as Dolly had during Jenny’s journey.

The tale of mutual devo-tion and loyalty is the late award-winning Etobicoke children’s author Jewel Kats’ latest children’s book.

U.S.-based Loving Healing Press published Jenny & Her Dog Both Fight Cancer: A Tale of Chemotherapy and Caring (32 pages; www.lhpress.com, US$15.95).

Claudia Marie Lenart illus-trated Kats’ latest children’s book with needle-felt dolls and scenes she created, pho-tographed in soft focus by

Kristine Fiskum.Kats died Jan. 7 of com-

plications following surgery in October to repair a bowel obstruction. She was 37.

Her passion was to create role models for children with disabilities and chronic con-ditions through the heroines in her Fairy Ability Tales chil-dren’s books.

“Reach for the stars, even if you have to grab onto them differently,” was a favourite saying of Kats, whose real name was Michelle Meera Katyal.

Three years ago, Kats dis-covered Lenart’s needle-felt art through Lenart’s Etsy store. Kats asked Lenart to illustrate her children’s books.

“I always had in my head that I wanted to author and illustrate children’s books. But I didn’t know what medium I would use,” Lenart said from her home in suburban Chicago near a lake and a forest preserve teeming with a menagerie of wildlife.

“Along the way, I started needle felting. Then Jewel

found me. It was fate.”Jenny & Her Dog Both Fight

Cancer was Lenart and Kats’ first of three collaborations.

“When I read it, I cried,” Lenart recalled. “I was very

Late Jewel Kats’ book tells story of girl and her dog fighting cancer

touched by the story. I’d lost dogs to cancer. It brought back that sadness to me.”

Kats’ female shih tzu, named Dolly, died of cancer three-and-a-half years ago.

Kats’ Dolly inspired the book, said her husband Alan Borgolotto.

“Jewel was so heartbroken. Dolly helped her through her darkest days,” he said.

The tale follows Jenny as she is declared cancer-free, while she steadfastly supports Dolly through her chemo-therapy treatments.

Kats and Lenart also col-laborated on Hansel & Gretel: A Fairy Tale with a Down Syndrome Twist. In it, five-year-old Hansel is a coura-geous, mischievous boy with Down syndrome.

Psychologists and coun-selors are weighing in with praise for Jenny & Her Dog Both Fight Cancer.

“...I love how genuine, heartfelt and sincere this story is. It will truly benefit families who struggle with cancer,” Jill Osborne, education specialist, licensed professional coun-selor, registered play therapist supervisor, certified profes-sional counselor supervisor, said in a review.

Kats was nine when a car accident shattered her right leg. She spent three months recovering in SickKids Hospital and suffered chronic pain throughout her life. She used a hot pink wheelchair to get around outside, and a hot pink walker elsewhere.

“It was during that time that she yearned for a chil-dren’s book that would uplift her spirits and help her dream,” Kats’ husband recalled. “

She could not find a book where a girl with a disability achieved her dreams and became a princess. That’s how her ‘Fairy Ability Tales’ series was born.”

Last July, Borgolotto pushed his wife’s wheelchair across the stadium as Kats helped carry the Pan American Sports Organization flag in the open-ing ceremonies of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games.

Later this year, Volkman will publish Kats’ last book about a premature baby titled, Prince Preemie, which Lenart is also illustrating.

Gus Ryder, his club taught more than 200,000 children to swimBorn in Toronto in 1899, Gus Ryder demonstrated a natural athletic ability as a young man. After he rescued two fellow hockey players who had fallen through the ice on Grenadier Pond in 1916, he vowed to make swimming instruction his personal avocation.

In 1930, Ryder moved to New Toronto where he founded both his own customs brokerage business and the Lakeshore Swim Club. As a result of his enthusiasm, more than 700 people joined his club that first year.

In the summer, his students were taught in Lake Ontario at the foot of Seventh Street and later in Etobicoke Creek and the Credit River. They used Toronto’s West End YMCA and Humberside Collegiate in the winter.

They finally got a permanent indoor pool when the Town of New Toronto supplied land and some capital, and the club raised the balance of the funds needed to open New Toronto Memorial Pool on Faustina Drive in 1952.

Ryder was a natural teacher and an innovative coach whose athletes achieved widespread success in swimming competitions.

His first major star was local resident Lou Gamble who said that Ryder not only coached her to multiple wins, but also taught her the values of personal commitment and community service.

Cliff Lumsdon was another local resident coached by Ryder. Lumsdon won the World Marathon Swimming Championship in 1949, for which he also received the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s top athlete. He then won four more world champion-ships and was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.

Ryder also coached marathon swimmer Marilyn Bell. In 1954, at age 16, she was the first person to swim across Lake Ontario.

She swam the English Channel in 1955 and the Straits of Juan de Fuca in 1956. Bell is listed in the

Top 10 of 20th century Canadian female athletes.

Over Ryder’s 56-year volunteer career, it has been estimated that more than 200,000 children learned to swim at his Lakeshore Swim Club. He was personally most proud of the program he instituted to teach physically challenged children to swim.

Ryder was awarded the Order of Canada in 1975, primarily for this work with children.

There are two Toronto swimming pools that bear his name today: Sunnyside Gus Ryder Outdoor Pool at 1755 Lake Shore Blvd. W. and Gus Ryder Pool (formerly New Toronto Memorial Pool) in New Toronto.

Ryder died in 1991, but his legacy endures as the Lakeshore Swim Club is still a leader in its field, using the New Toronto pool as its primary practice site.

siblings would celebrate an addi-tional “birthday” every year mark-ing the date of the transplant, said Rosen’s father, Allan.

Rosen, 38, was a 15-year Toronto firefighter, who worked out of Station 443 on Islington Avenue in central Etobicoke. She had planned to take a year’s sabbatical from her job this September to attend law school on a full scholarship.

Rosen died last Thursday in a mountain biking accident while out riding with a colleague at Kelso Conservation Area in Milton, Ont.

Gaistman called his life with Rosen a “magical journey” because of Rosen’s “joy of life, excitement and passion. You made everyone around you laugh, feel happy, feel worthy, feel respected. You made everyone want to enjoy life. You always fought for what was right.

“It is your strength that is help-ing me get through this terrible tragedy.”

A strong sense of self, determina-tion, and a spirit to fight for what was right were themes woven throughout the stories Rosen’s father told from his daughter’s life.

“Nothing would stop Sara,” Allan Rosen said.

He recalled how she stood play-ing with water in a sink while other children in her class gathered as per a teacher’s instruction. How she pulled an astounded 240-pound male firefighter, wearing 75 pounds of weights, from a smoke-filled room during a training exercise.

How she persevered to another fire hall and was hired when the platoon chief of the first hall she approached said they weren’t set up to accept women firefighters. “Do you have a lock on the door? Do you have a bunk?” Rosen had asked.

How emotionally struck she was when she was with the first fire crew to respond to a devastating fire in two barns at Woodbine Racetrack in August 2002 that killed 31 horses. How unreservedly she had offered a kidney to her brother when his health began to fail. And how she then became a vocal advocate for organ donation.

Many mourners wept when Allan Rosen closed his eulogy by saying, “I

won’t hear my daughter say ‘I love you’ anymore. Goodbye, Sara. I love you.’”

Rabbi Tina Grimberg read American poet Mary Oliver’s poem, “When Death Comes” because it spoke to Rosen’s mark on the world, she said.

“When it’s over, I want to say all my life/I was a bride married to amazement... I don’t want to end up simply having visited this world,” Grimberg read. “Sara Rosen did not simply visit this world. She was a bride married to amazement.”

Frank Ramagnano, president of the Toronto Professional Fire Fighters’ Association, shared mes-sages of condolence offered by Toronto firefighters.

“ S a r a w a s power ful and

fierce. People like Sara make you want to do more in the world to help others,” one firefighter said.

Another offered: “She was honest, caring and full of life. She was always looking to make things better.”

“If we had 3,000 Saras, we would have the most-successful union in the world,” Ramagnano said.

Mike McCoy, Toronto fire deputy chief of operations, said Rosen car-ried out her duties with “courage and compassion.” He first met Rosen in 2005 when he was her platoon chief.

“The position of a firefighter is often dangerous, thankless, and at times, pushes you to limits you never thought you were capable of. It is not an occupation for the faint of heart or something to be entered into lightly. You have to

l ove t h i s job to do it

well. Sara did it well.”McCoy said her colleagues will

remember Rosen “as a truly com-passionate person, a humanitarian with a zest for life and a person with a strong, determined personality.... She was generous and caring, and always eager to lend a hand.”

McCoy encouraged mourners to take some comfort in the knowledge Rosen was doing what she loved when her life ended.

“On a beautiful spring day, she was living life to the fullest and enjoying every minute of it,” he said.

Rosen “made us all better people,” John Getty, acting captain of Rosen’s firehall, said of the colleague he had known for a decade.

Getty shared how Rosen had often tried to co-opt him into endur-ance races like Tough Mudder, miles of mud and

obstacles designed to test mental grit, strength, and physical fitness. “When Sara mentioned a race, I learned to Google it first,” Getty said to the laughter of mourners.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sara Rosen Memorial Fund, which benefits organ transplants at Toronto General Hospital, mental health causes, and The Positive Space Anti-Bullying Campaign.

Donations may be made c/o The Benjamin Foundation, 3429 Bathurst St. Toronto, M6A 2C3. Visit www.ben-jamins.ca or call 416-780-0324.

Rosen leaves her partner, Jackie Gaistman, children Frelan and Alex and her beloved dog, Brownie, as well as her parents, Allan and Ann, and her brother, Mark.

CONSUMER FEATURE

On November 1, 2013, ExpertMortgage launched the “85-Alive”program in Ontario. Theconcept was simple: as longas you had a pulse, ExpertMortgage would provide youwith a home equity loan, upto 85 percent of the valueof your property. No jobrequired. Bad credit, OK.

The reason why ExpertMortgage could offer a “noquestions asked” lendingprogram, while the majorbanks could not, is that theyrepresent over 200 privatelenders who lend strictlyon property value. Thesesubprime lenders specializein mortgage clients whohave had some bad luck, andneed a helping hand untilthey get back on their feet.

The program has beenso successful that ExpertMortgage can barely keepup with the volume ofcalls. To help fund thisunexpectedly large numberof borrowers, it has partneredup with dozens moreprivate lenders.

Licensed Mortgage AgentPuneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s“85-Alive” representative forthe GTA Region, says, “We’reseeing mostly homeownersbehind on mortgage andproperty taxes. The banksare refusing to restructuretheir loans. Many of thesepeople have lost jobs due tothe bad economy... or they’reself-employed. Unless youare a perfect applicant, thebank doesn’t want to talkto you.”

But not everyone condonesExpert Mortgage’s easylending criteria. A local realestate agent with 25 years ofexperience, who has askedto remain anonymous, says,“When this market turnsdown, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicidefor Expert Mortgage to begiving money away so easilyto clients without the abilityto make payments. I’d besurprised if they’re still inbusiness five years fromnow.”

Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problemwith the program. Whenquestioned on how she planson making payments on hermortgage when she has noincome, Anita responds, “Wewere four months behind onourmortgage and they savedour house. My husbandhas been unemployed fornine months. He won’t beunemployed forever. Weused the 85-Alive loan to payoff all our debt. We also had$25,000 left over that we putin the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, theyworked it out so we have nomortgage payments for 12months.”

Zaza Espresso Bar brings ‘La cultura del caffe’ to EtobicokeThe unmistakable aroma of fresh coffee waft-ing around Eglinton Avenue and Scarlett Road isfrom Zaza Espresso Bar. The family-owned espres-so chain opened their sixth location at 25 Fon-tenay Crt. this week, just in time for the summer.

TAMARA SHEPHARD [email protected]

Soheila Mosun will attend Cornell University’s three-week hotel operations management program this summer.

She’s 15.The Etobicoke teen, keen

on a career in hospital-ity, and her family spent Thanksgiving touring the Ithaca, N.Y., campus, where she was wowed by the campus’ Statler Hotel, run entirely by Cornell’s hospital-ity students.

“Students told us, ‘It’s a great program. If you per-severe, you’ll do well here,’” Soheila recalled, as she sat in the lobby of the Toronto Airport Marriott, where she works part time in the house-keeping department.

“I’ll make connections, new friends, get an overall idea of what it’s like to be in university, and learn all about the hotel industry.”

Cornell reports its hotel operations program, taught at Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration, is currently ranked No. 1 in the world for hospitality management.

Soheila will earn three Ivy League college credits.

Cornell’s summer program is designed to develop stu-dents’ business, management and leadership experience, and to refine their computer, communication and analyti-cal skills, Cornell states on its website.

Canadian hotelier and writer Isadore Sharp’s book, Four Seasons: The Story of a Business Philosophy, is required reading before classes begin.

While just a teen, Soheila already packs some hospital-ity experience.

Since Boxing Day, she has worked part-time on week-ends in the housekeeping department at the Toronto Airport Marriott Hotel. “She floated in and she floated out. She was so happy,” her dad, Darius Mosun, recalled of his oldest daughter’s first day on the job.

In fall 2014, the affable then 14-year-old contacted the Marriott’s hotel manage-ment to request a shadowing opportunity to gain behind-

the-scenes knowledge of how a hotel operates.

So h e i l a s p e n t e ve r y Saturday for six weeks shad-owing each department of the Toronto Airport Marriott – the front office, food and beverage, banquet and restaurant, housekeeping and sales, marketing and accounting.

Murray Kelsey, general manager of Toronto Airport Marriott, said his and his staff’s positive experience with Soheila has opened doors for other high school students to explore a career in the industry at his hotel.

“It’s great. If Soheila wasn’t engaged and passionate about it, she wouldn’t be here,” said Kelsey.

Soheila has worked the production line in the hotel’s laundry room, fed machines, caught and folded laundry, and assisted Patterson on special projects.

Soheila combined her interest in the hotel industry with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award skill requirement, said Donna Dupuy, a music teacher and co-ordinator of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program at Appleby

College, an international independent school in Oakville, Ont. where Soheila is a Grade 10 student.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award calls itself “the world’s leading achievement award for young people.”

The charity challenges young people ages 14 to 24 as it encourages personal discover y and growth, self-reliance, perseverance and responsibility through achievement in: service; skills; adventurous journey; physical fitness; and, at the gold level, a residential proj-ect.

“Soheila distinguished herself from almost all other students by choosing to find her own opportunities to take initiative, do things in the community and better her-self, and to link them to her career goals,” Dupuy said.

Soheila has achieved her bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and is now working toward her silver level.

“My hope is to inspire other young people to dream big and with passion, patience and persistence so they can accomplish anything they want to,” Soheila said.

Teen intent on running a hotel heads to Cornell to learn how
