Dear Friends,

I love Eastertide, because it is here that we proclaim

the Lord is Risen (indeed), and punctuate our joy with, “alleluia!”. Without Easter, Christians would not be. Without Easter, much of our current lifestyles would not be. But with Easter, with the unexplained and startling rising of Jesus from the grave, the words of Jesus and the actions of Jesus invite us to new life. We are invited to a life where we join together to care for the sick and feed the hungry and welcome the stranger. We join together to provide hospitality.

In the letter to the Romans we read, “Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” (Romans 12:13) With hospitality, we proclaim to the world the incarnation of Christ, God's grace in salvation, the unity of the church, and our own participation in the life of Christ. In Peter’s first letter he exhorts the people to, “be hospitable to one another without complaining.”

The reality of Easter says to us that evil was conquered and evil will be conquered. That which is evil may have its day, but our God is in power. This life is a mystery given by God, but evil will not stand. Love wins! And what are we to do? Rejoice, give thanks and offer hospitality!

Hospitality is basic to the Christian life, but it is not always easy. Hospitality was there with the group of folks gathered to spruce up our church on the Saturday before Palm Sunday, in the focused practice of the choir and organists, in the holiness I witnessed as the altar guild prepared the sanctuary, in the hiding of eggs, in the preparation of food... in it all.

This is us. We are the people of St. Matthew’s called to be welcoming to those we know and those we do not know. When we welcome others we encounter them. We listen and we pay attention. We offer food and drink and something of our own selves. And sometimes this isn’t easy. Sometimes we are overcome with our own struggles in life, that’s true. And sometimes the person we encounter is very

different than we are. Still, there are times when meeting and talking with someone is just what is needed to put our lives in perspective, and there are times when simply acting as a Christian brings us to a place of grace.

The mystery that is God is the conquering of death and the love of all people. When we extend the love God has given us into the world, things change. Transformation happens.

Phillip Brook said, “Let every man and woman count himself immortal. Let him catch the revelation of Jesus in his resurrection. Let him say not merely, 'Christ is risen,' but 'I shall rise.'” Together, let us rise! Let the love of God permeate our souls and radiate into our community. Together let us proclaim, “Alleluia! Christ is Risen!” And the heavens reply, “The Lord is Risen Indeed, Alleluia!”

Thank you to all who donated candy and eggs for our Easter hunt! The kids had a great time, and thanks to the generous people of St. Matthew’s, we had plenty of eggs to share with children who were in town visiting.

The Sunday school classes have finished up our series of building Easter with legos. After ice cream Sunday, we will begin a new series and our classroom will transform into a rainforest environment. We will be learning five parables told by Jesus. Many thanks to Deborah Robinson for contributing art work for our rainforest classroom!

VBS is June 19th-23rd. This year’s theme is Maker Fun Factory. Our curious and talented kids will become hands-on inventors who discover they are lovingly crafted by God.

Cinco De Mayo Celebration! We’re celebrating May 5th in style again this year, with St. Matt’s 2nd annual Cinco de Mayo fundraiser: great Mexican food, a piñata for the kids, cash “donation” bar, and music. The fundraiser will benefit our summer camp subsidy fund Menu: Taco Plate, Enchilada Plate or Combo Plate (all gluten free) and Mexican cake for dessert. Price: Advance Tickets - $15 Adults, $10 Kids 12-18, $7 Kids 5-12. Kids under 5 are free At the Door - $25 Adults, $20 Kids 12-18, $12 Kids 5-12. Vacation Bible School “Maker Fun Factory”!

Maker Fun Factory is a 5 day VBS experience where kids discover they are created by God and are built for a purpose. Kids learn: God made you; God is for you; God is always with you; God will always love you; and God made you for a reason Maker Fun Factory Daily Bible Points Day 1: God Made You (Ps. 139:14) - God lovingly creates people. What's Happening With Our Candidates for Holy Orders? Our seminarian, Camie Dewey, is completing her first year at Seminary of the southwest in Austin, Texas. Camie wants everyone to know how very much she appreciates your prayers! Camie will join us on May 14th at the 9:30 amworship service, and then she goes on to complete CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) this summer. Our deacon-to-be, Rich Paul, is completing his studies and will be ordained to the diaconate (order of deacons) on June 10th at St. John's Cathedral in Denver. All are invited! Rich will preach on June 11. Our agreement with Bishop Rob is that Rich will serve at St. Matthew's for the next two years (and we're hoping for more!)

Outreach Fundraiser - May 24th

The Outreach team at St. Matthew’s will host a fundraiser at Dos Hombres restaurant in Clifton on Wednesday, May 24th. Simply go into Dos Hombres between 4pm and 8:30pm, and let your server know that you would like 10% of your total bill to go toward the fundraiser. It’s as simple as that! Enjoy a night out eating excellent Mexican cuisine, and know you’re helping the outreach efforts of St. Matthew’s!

May Outreach News

HomewardBound: The Outreach Committee is looking for cooks and servers for the HomewardBound Shelter for one dinner a month (The next four dates are MAY 9th, JUNE 14th, JULY 11th, AUGUST 8th). Our first dinner during Holy Week was a blessed and uplifting experience. Please prayerfully consider helping out. Here’s what we need:

+ 4-6 people to cook. Arrive at HomewardBound at 2pm

+ 4 people to serve the meal. Arrive at HomewardBound at 4:45pm

Sign up is on the table under the butterfly window in the common area or call the office and let them know you can help out. The menu will be already planned and ingredients to make the meal will be at the shelter. Clean-up will also be done by those at the shelter. HomewardBound is located at 2853 North Avenue. Any questions please talk to Shannon Casteneda or anyone on the Outreach Team.

Dos Hombres Night Out: Mark your calendars. Our next Outreach Fundrasier Dinner is Wednesday, May 24th at the CLIFTON Dos Hombres from 4 – 8:30pm. Dos Hombres generously gives ten percent of your total bill back to our outreach ministries. We will use these funds to support our shoe ministry to elementary kids with financial needs.

Clothing Drive for Elementary Kiddos: During the summer months we will again be conducting a clothing drive for elementary aged kids. Look for a collection bin in the common area starting in May. This year we have partnered with Broadway and Wingate Elementary Schools to collect clothes to give away at the beginning of next school year. These schools have already generously donated and will continue to collect until the end of this school year. We are excited that they have agreed to join us in this ministry.

Now is the perfect time to go through your closets and drawers for items that are no longer worn. We are looking for gently used or new clothes. The clothes we collect will be given away shortly after the new school year begins at locations easily accessible to those in need. Thank you as always for your wonderful support!

You are responsible for the smiles below and dozens more! The items were delivered on April 11 to Bookcliff Manor, Mantey Heights, Palisade Living Center, and the Retreat. The congregation at St. Matthew’s is truly a blessing to our community!

Good Friday

On Good Friday we remembered the great sacrifice of Christ following the noon day service. A large cross was carried and erected on a corner near St. Matthew’s.

MOSM Service Brigade - If you

need help with a project, or maybe repairs and maintenance, the Men of St. Matt’s are taking requests and are available Saturdays upon appointment. Contact Ron Kupinski at (303) 668-7453 or [email protected], or fill out a form at the back of the gathering space and the guys will get back to you.

Study of the Bible Fr. Nick Mayer’s current Bible Study class of the Old Testament will wrap soon and then class will be taking a break for the summer, resuming in September with a new study of Matthew. Tuesday mornings at 10:00 AM. All are welcome, no need to sign up.

YOGA CLASS NEEDS PARTICIPANTS!

Wednesdays 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM. Yoga helps with flexibility, balance and overall health. Open to men and women, a donation of $2 - $5 is recommended. Both floor and chair versions. To find out if the class is “on”, please call the church office Tuesday mornings.

Pentecost Celebration!

June 4, 2017

Pentecost marks the birth of the church with the arrival of the Holy Spirit, and the next date for baptisms! That’s cause for celebration! After the 9:30 service, plan to stay for hamburgers, hot dogs, birthday cake and kite flying (pray for wind!). There will also be special decorations in the sanctuary! Contact clergy if interested in scheduling a baptism.
