THE FACILITIES CONNECTION
EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: RONALD BORENCongratulations to Ronald Boren in Facilities Administration (Plumbing Services) on being selected Facilities Employee of the Month for March 2017.
Ronald’s dedication in fulfilling his normal job duties, as well as going the extra mile, led to a nomination and selection as our March winner. Ronald’s nomination specifically outlined how he always puts forth extra effort and goes above and beyond in his daily assignments. While working to resolve a water leak in the TSRB, he located ceiling tiles in the area that matched and was proactive in making the decision to go ahead and replace the tiles with newer ones. His effort resulted in not only repair of the water leak but resolved two problems at once. His supervisor was quick to let us know this is Ronald’s normal work ethic and his focus is on saving time and labor in not involving other crafts. Lastly, Ronald’s excellent communication with other departments as well as his pleasant, polite and professional attitude has been recognized again and again. Ronald, thank you for making all of us look good here at UTHSC and for your dedication to doing a great job every day!
Above Ronald is pictured along with Dr. Kennard Brown, Executive Vice Chancellor and COO, Emile J. David, Asssociate Vice Chancellor and Kenny Bradshaw, Director of Facilities as he accepts his award certificate and gift cards.
A huge thank you to Dr. Kennard Brown for his support of the Facilities Employee of the Month program!

SAFETY TIPS Flooding Recovery and Electrical Safety
From the Campus Emergency Management and Safety Office - Facilities
If any type of flooding occurs on campus, it is natural to rush into the scene and begin recovery efforts, however, electrical safety is often overlooked, especially when it comes to saving equipment or files. It pays to step back and carefully evaluate things before moving forward with cleanup efforts. Electrical shocks or electrocutions are common during this type of event.
1. Do not try and save the affected equipment in the area immediately. In most cases equipment that has been flooded is most likely ruined.
2. Never rush/go into a flood-damage area until Facilities has been able to secure the power. Often overhead lights, or equipment that has been affected by the water could still be energized – and can transfer electricity through the water that has collected in the area. You cannot always count on a permanently affixed GFCI circuit, a circuit breaker, or even the equipment itself to short or disconnect after it has been wet.
3. Any recovery equipment such as water removal devices, extension cords, or any other powered item shall be fully inspected before use for frayed wires, or other serviceability items that could come in contact with water and either short the equipment or transfer electricity to the user. Any item that has deficiencies shall not be used, and be replaced immediately.
4. Recovery equipment used in a flooded area should be connected to a portable GFCI power strip, or GFCI extension cord. This is a small but a sure guarantee against secondary electrical hazards while working in a flooded area
5. Never work in a flooded area alone. Someone must always be with you, in case you need help. Never rush through a flooded area. A variety of situations, or causes can make a floor slippery. Take your time and step carefully and NEVER touch anything electrical if your hands are wet!

THANK YOU to the OED staff for training all of the Facilities employees in the month of March!

Facilities has a large organization (over 200 employees) and we appreciate the extra effort put forth to ensure every employee receives the required trainings.
The OED staff did an outstanding job of covering the employees’ various shift times and we extend our thanks for the time and effort to accommodate the Facilities organization!
