Page 1: The Facts about Electronic Cigarettes

Electronic CigarettesElectronic cigarettes are small electronic devices that vaporize a nicotine solution to simulate the rituals and experience of tobacco cigarettes.

1) Electronic cigarettes remove 99% of the harm associated with tobacco cigarettes by removing the elements of combustion and smoke.

2) Electronic cigarettes help many smokers cut down on smoking or quit entirely.

3) Electronic cigarettes do not produce smoke and shouldn't be treated like they do.3) Electronic cigarettes do not produce smoke and shouldn't be treated like they do.

4) Electronic cigarettes do not appeal to minors and therefore do not provide a gateway to nicotine addiction not already provided by tobacco cigarettes.

1) E-cigs are not harmless, but they are much less harmful than tobacco cigarettes.

• Compared to Smoking: Research suggests that a lifetime of electronic cigarette use is less harmful than 2 months of smoking.

“Smokeless tobacco has extremely small health risks — about 99% less than smoking, which makes it no more risky than coffee or french fries.” – Prof. Carl V. Phillips, University of Alberta School of Public Health

• Second-hand Vapor Concerns:• Second-hand Vapor Concerns: Research is nding that the secondhand effect of electronic cigarette vapor is virtually undetectable.

"E-cigarettes pose no discernible risk to public health." – Dr. Murray Laugesen, Health New Zealand

• Reducing harm: Allowing smokers to transition to smokeless nicotine alternatives will save lives and medical care costs.

"...if we get all tobacco smokers to switch from regular cigarettes to electronic cigarettes, we would "...if we get all tobacco smokers to switch from regular cigarettes to electronic cigarettes, we would eventually reduce the US death toll from more than 400,000 a year to less than 4,000, maybe as low as 400." –Joel Niztkin, Chair of the Tobacco Control Task Force for the American Association of Public Health Physicians

2) E-cigs are successful at replacing tobacco cigarettes with a lower risk nicotine alternative.

• Cessation success: A pilot study from the Universtiy of Catania (Italy) showed promising results when giving electronic cigarette access to smokers that didn't want to quit smoking. A global trial mirroring the pilot is being completed now and so far the results seem to stand. The Results: Inside 6 months, 50% of subjects reduced smoking by half or more. Another 25% had quit smoking entirely. – Riccardo Polosa, University of Catania

• Cessation Should Include Harm Reduction: Abstinence-only programming for smoking cessation doesn't mitigate risk for individuals that cannot or will not quit smoking. Harm reduction will.

“Harm reduction works to reduce the adverse health, social and economic impacts of drug use on communities, families and individuals.” – Australia’s National Drug Strategy (Australia is at the forefront of drug policy globally. Harm reduction is a cornerstone to its strategy.)
