Honors & Awards ~ Congratulations to:
Ann S. Botash, MD, Pediatrics, received the Congressional Victim‘s Rights
Caucus Certificate of Recognition, U.S. House of Representatives, for her work
with the McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center in child abuse prevention and
treatment.
Lynn Cleary, MD, Medicine; Senior Associate Dean for Education; Vice
President of Academic Affairs, received the Laureate Award from the New York
Chapter of the American College of Physicians at their Annual Scientific Meeting
in Albany, NY on August 24, 2012. From the NYS ACP website: "The Laureate
Award is a distinguished honor for select Fellows of the American College of
Physicians in the New York Chapter who have demonstrated an outstanding
commitment to excellence in medical care, education or research, and service to
the community and the American College of Physicians. This award is the most
prestigious honor bestowed to a chapter member at the state level."
Christopher Fullagar, MD, Emergency Medicine, received the 2012 CNYEMS
Educator of Excellence Award. It is given by the Central New York Regional
Council for an ―individual who through outstanding teaching, educational
administration/coordination, publication or research has significantly improved
prehospital services at the local, county, regional or state level.‖ Presented July
17, 2012 at the CNYEMS REMSCO meeting.
Brian Johnson, MD, Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, was just notified that he
was honored as one of the most downloaded authors on Psychoanalytic
Electronic Publishing in 2010.
Brian Johnson, MD, Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, received the 2012
Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award-Arnold P. Gold Foundation, ―in
recognition of exemplary compassion, competence and respect in the delivery of
care‖, June 28, 2012.
William F. Lavelle, MD, Nathaniel R. Ordway, MS, PE, Yushek Pun, BS,
Stephen A. Albanese, MD, Orthopedic Surgery, received the James H. Beaty
Scientific Poster Achievement Award from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of
North America for the presentation of the outstanding Scientific Poster at the
2012 Annual Meeting entitled ―Biomechanics of Direct Transverse Plane
Vertebral Derotation at the Bone Screw Interface: Do Bicortical Pedicle Screws
Make a Difference?‖
Ruth Weinstock, MD, Medicine, was awarded the prestigious rank of
Distinguished Service Professor at the State University of New York (SUNY),

Lynn Cleary, MD, Medicine; Senior Associate Dean for Education; Vice
President of Academic Affairs, has been elected to the Board of Directors of
Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the national honor society for
medical students and physicians, for a three-year term (2012-15). Dr. Cleary
will continue to serve as the Councilor of the Upstate Chapter of AOA. In
2011/12, Upstate AOA students provided almost 1000 hours of tutoring and
review for undergraduate students. The chapter was established in 1911, and was
the 16th chapter to be established in the country. There are now 133
chapters. The mission statement of AOA follows: "Alpha Omega Alpha —
dedicated to the belief that in the profession of medicine we will improve care for
all by
recognizing high educational achievement
honoring gifted teaching
encouraging the development of leaders in academia and the community
supporting the ideals of humanism
promoting service to others."
Robert Cooney, MD, Chair, Surgery, recently took office as President-Elect of
the Shock Society during the Shock Society‘s annual meeting June 9-13, 2012 in
Miami Beach, Florida. During his one-year term from June 2013 to June 2014,
Dr. Cooney will lead the society‘s efforts to improve the care of victims of
trauma, shock and sepsis. The society‘s mission is to promote clinically relevant
research and the dissemination of knowledge into the basic biology of trauma,
shock and sepsis and promote the education and mentoring of the next generation
of investigators in the area of shock, trauma and sepsis.
Colin Leech, PhD, Medicine, Served on the NIH ZRG1 EMNR-S study section
for small business grants.
Linda E. Miller, PhD, Clinical Laboratory Science – CHP, was appointed as an
Assistant Editor for Lab Medicine.
Richard Veenstra, PhD, Pharmacology, served as Co-Chair of the Spring 2012

Speaker at the 2012 Upstate Medical University Gamma Chapter of the national
Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society Annual Induction Dinner May 2012.

Derek Cooney, MD, FACEP, Emergency Medicine, served again as Course
Director, for the 2012 Annual EMS Symposium. This year the EMS education
program was a cooperative offering by SUNY Upstate Medical University
Hospital, St. Joseph‘s Hospital Health System, and Crouse Irving Memorial
Hospital. The program was attended by 131 participants on May 21st, 2012, and
received excellent reviews.
Teresa Hargrave, MD, MPH Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, assisted Drs
James Wallace and Michael Scharf, University of Rochester Psychiatry, in
presenting Dr. Peter Jensen‘s innovative ―REACH‖ curriculum which seeks to
empower primary care clinicians to better assess and manage mild to moderate
mental health problems in children and adolescents in their practices. The
training is part of the CAPPC (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for Primary
Care) initiative, administered by David Kaye,MD, Psychiatry & Behavioral
Health SUNY Buffalo, funded by OMH, which is designed to serve 80% of New
York state‘s youth under the age of 22. 23 pediatricians, family practitioners,
nurse practitioners and child psychiatry fellows from the Rochester area of
Central New York participated in the 3-day workshop in July 2012.

practice
Joshua Steinberg MD has formed a collaborative project with the SUNY
Binghamton Dept Computer Science to produce iPhone software applications on
medical topics. These free evidence-based apps are written specifically for
students, residents, and clinicians as well as other members of the healthcare team
in order to both educate and elevate clinical practice. We have surpassed 100,000
downloads worldwide, and wish to announce our latest offerings.
Pap Guide: this app pulls together and presents the latest guidance on screening
for cervical cancer from the 2012 ASCCP consensus guidelines and others. It
provides guidance on whom to screen, screening techniques, screening intervals,
how to act on the results, and circumstances which impact screening.

Lead Screen Guide: this app presents the latest New York State Dept. of Health
guidelines on screening and managing childhood lead exposure. It covers who to

Laboratory Science
Dr. Johnson earned his PhD in biochemistry & molecular biology from the
University of Louisville. He is board certified as a Medical Technologist - MT
(ASCP) and Clinical Laboratory Scientist - CLS (NCA). Prior to joining Upstate,
Dr. Johnson worked for Boston Heart Diagnostics as a Clinical Laboratory
Manager. He also worked for Northwestern Memorial Hospital as a Medical
Technologist.
Thomas LaClair, MD, Assistant Professor, Family Medicine
Dr. LaClair received his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University
and completed his residency at St. Joseph‘s Hospital. He has been in private
practice and a member of our voluntary faculty.
Matthew McDonald, DO, Assistant Professor, Surgery
Dr. McDonald received his degree of osteopathic medicine from New York
Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency here at SUNY Upstate
Medical University. He joins us from Saratoga Hospital.
Andreas Meier, MD, Associate Professor with Tenure, Surgery
Dr. Meier received his medical degree from Ludwig Maximilian University in
Germany and completed his residency at Stanford University. He pursued
additional training in pediatric surgery at Emory University and completed
research fellowships at Stanford University. He has been on the faculty of

recently Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

Daniel Poulsen, PT, PhD, OCS, Assistant Professor, CHP - Physical Therapy
Dr. Poulsen is a board certified orthopedic physical therapist who has special
interest in the area of geriatric orthopedic care. His received a Bachelor's degree
in physical therapy and Master's degree in physiology from SUNY Buffalo. Dr.
Poulsen's PhD was earned at Texas Tech University with a special emphasis in
rehabilitation sciences education.
