Representatives from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society recently presented Aylen Junior High School Principal Kevin Mensonides with a plaque recognizing Aylen Junior High School as the 5th Highest Fundraising School in the States of Washington and Alaska. Last year the Aylen community pulled together to raise $5,885.

Thank you to all of those who helped contribute to this worthy cause. Aylen will hold our annual Cash for Cancer drive again in February of 2020.

Hello Falcon Families! Fast approaching, we have our first concert at Aylen Junior High School this year on October 29 at 7 PM in the Aylen Gym. Orchestra students should be arriving to Aylen at 6:15 PM and band students should be arriving to Aylen at 6:30 to warm up and get ready for the concert. A reminder to families that this is an extremely exciting night for your students, and they would love to see you there!

WALK-A-THON WRAP UP Thank you to our Aylen families for your help in making our Walk-A-Thon a success this year. While we didn’t

quite meet our overall goal, we did well and will be able to use this money for so many things around our school. Our grand total for this year was $6,889.25! The money raised goes directly back to the students, into our ASB funds. ASB funds are used for the fun extra things we offer here at Aylen, such as: sports, intramurals, clubs (art club, drama club, board game club, etc), dances,

spirit assemblies, FAN nights, and so much more.

Annual “Great Shake Out” Day at Aylen The International Shake Out Day is held annually on the third Thursday of October to prepare for how to respond in an earthquake. This year, it was held on Thursday, Oct. 17 @ 10:17 A.M. at Aylen. During the earthquake drill, our students and staff practiced how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On”. Endorsed by emergency officials and first responders, the safe response to an earthquake is to:

DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down and also allows you to stay low and crawl to shelter if nearby.

COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand

• If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter

• If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall (away from windows)

• Stay on your knees; bend over to protect vital organs

HOLD ON until shaking stops

• Under shelter: hold on to it with one hand; be ready to move with your shelter if it shifts

• No shelter: hold on to your head and neck with both arms and hands.

Being On-Time to School Falcon Families,

It is super important to be to school on time. This helps lessen classroom disruptions and therefore, increases student learning. Please help your student get to school before 7:45. Each family has different strategies for that to happen. We encourage you to find strategies that are effective in helping your student learn to be punctual—a great life skill. Usually, it just takes leaving the house 5-10 minutes earlier to avoid being late to school. The closer it gets to 7:40, the more crowded the drop-off area gets. Below is the policy that was shared with all students during the Aylen Behavior Expectation Presentations by building administrators in their math classroom. They also did a Scavenger Hunt during Flight Time to become even more familiar with our expectations and school policy. FIRST PERIOD TARDY/LATE TO SCHOOL

Students have 24 hours (by 9:00 A.M.) to get a guardian to excuse the tardy. This can be done in the form of a phone call to 253-841-8723-option 1, a guardian note, or an email to [email protected]

If a guardian excuse is not received by 9:00 A.M the next day, the student either

• serves 10-minute community service during lunch OR (they choose)

• serves 30-minute lunch detention Community service = courtyard garbage pick-up, commons garbage pick-up, wiping tables, putting up chairs, etc.

EXCESSIVE 1ST PERIOD TARDY INTERVENTIONS

Thank you for your support in getting your student to school on-time every day! Mrs. Clifton
