Alumni News
Presidential Address
Another school year has started, another homecoming has passed, as I look back and
wonder: “How did I get here?” Seven years ago, I stumbled into this fraternity as a pledge and
understood nothing about Triangle... Now, I find myself elected as your Alumni President. As I
connect these two events, I realize how much the friendship and character of my friends – my
brothers – has come to shape my life. Without their leadership and support, I would never have
considered taking on any undergraduate or alumni positions. Being elected as your Alumni
President is a huge honor and I hope I can provide the same guidance and support that you have
all provided me over the years. The bar has been set high, but I look to the other board members
and I have no doubt that we will be able to provide the necessary leadership and guidance to
continue the success of our organization.
I would like to specifically thank Brother Buchhalter for his time as Alumni President. He
has been a true example of stability throughout his term as took on not just the role of President,
but Master's student and fulltime employee as well. Even after his time as President, he has
continued to show leadership and dedication to the Fraternity by accepting the role of Fundraising
Chair. His continued enthusiasm for Triangle is much appreciated.
Over the next 2 years, I hope to focus on both undergraduates and alumni. Some of the
things I would like to focus on are outlined below, but the majority of focus will be improving on
the quality and efficiency of our current ventures.
Finally, this fraternity succeeds because of our
members. If you ever have any input, ideas, questions,
or would like to get involved, please let me know.
You can reach me by email or phone:
[email protected] or 412-719-3332. I
want nothing more than to make this fraternity the best
that it can be for all of us.

Future Goals
During my tenure, I’m hoping to accomplish two major goals:
Grow the engagement and the participation of the alumni base.
This can be done through better tracking of alumni as well as offering more
opportunities to participate and making it easier for to re-engage with the fraternity.
Better support the active organization.
The goal is to offer support and programs outside of the undergraduate scope. To
start, we will be offering one seminar per semester. Starting with a personal finance
seminar this spring. If interested in helping, please contact me for details.
Alumni Day of Service
“Accept cheerfully my full share of any task, however menial,
involved in maintaining a Chapter home…” This summer,
undergraduate and alumni members alike took this point of the Code of
Ethics to the next level with over 100 man-hours of volunteer work
across a multitude of projects. With the original goal of contributing
time instead of money towards home improvements, the Alumni Board
organized the first annual Alumni Day of Service.
We can easily say that this event was
a huge success thanks to all of our volunteers.
Brothers worked on painting, patching holes,
electrical work, plumbing, and of course yard work. Lunch and dinner
were graciously prepared by the culinary genius of our in-house Master
Chef: Brother Patrizio.
On behalf of the chapter, we would like to, again, thank everyone
who participated.
Green Plan Update
Due to more pressing issues and initiatives facing the chapter, the Green Plan has
temporarily been put on hold. We do intend to continue work on this in the future, but a new
timeline has yet to be evaluated. If you have any questions regarding this project or are interested
in taking a lead role, please contact a board member.

Alumni Spotlight
Dr. Charles L Hosler. Dr. Hosler was initiated in 1966 as an honorary member of Triangle
and received his BS, MS, and PhD at Penn State University. His PhD is in meteorology, which he
completed in 1951. Dr. Hosler has served as a Penn State professor, administrator, dean, and
provost. Originally, Dr. Hosler found himself at Bucknell pursuing a dual degree in mechanical
and chemical engineering. He volunteered for aerology and was sent to MIT to study aerological
engineering which he pursued until 1944. He then went to midshipman school as Cornell and was
assigned to small aircraft training in Miami. He was then deployed to Pearl Harbor and Guam as
a weather forecaster during WWII. After the war ended, he was stationed on Okinawa and tasked
with flying into typhoons to gather weather data.
After coming home, he decided to become a meteorologist and came to Penn State to get
his degrees during which he found himself with 250 credits acquired but no degree. Dr. Hosler
served for 20 years as the dean of the graduate school at Penn State. He was simultaneously
provost, dean of the graduate school, senior vice president for research, and executive vice
president of the university. Some of Dr. Hosler’s other accomplishments include being a consultant
for the construction of nuclear power plants across the country and serving as chairman of various
committees in Washington DC involving the atmosphere. His advice for current members of
Triangle and alumni is to do more to educate the public on the importance of what engineers,
architects and scientists do for society and teach the next generation to get them interested in STEM
fields.
Chapter Eternal
I am sad to report that Richard Paul Harvan, PS81 my brother, entered
Chapter Eternal on April 3, 2016. He will be missed.
Richard Paul Harvan, of Leonardtown, MD passed away peacefully
at the Hospice House of St. Mary's on April 3, 2016, surrounded by his love,
Mary Dryden, and his sons, Christopher and Jonathon. Richard graduated
from Penn State University, earning two bachelor's degrees, a BS in
Community Development in 1975 and a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1982.
He was a valued employee of the Naval Air Systems Command for 20 years and Naval Electronics
Systems Engineering Activity for 13 years.
He was an avid variable stars astronomy hobbyist for more than 20 years and could be seen
many nights with his 16" reflector telescope. He read daily about the Civil War and could recite
exactly what happened and where and by whom. He was a Civil War reenactor for several years,
but gladly gave that up when his sons were born. He loved to ski and taught his sons how. He
earned his Tae Kwon Do black belt with his sons and was a favorite instructor at the Black Belt
Academy. He traveled the world with his family to places like England, Scotland, Spain, Italy,
France, and the US Virgin Islands. He will forever be remembered as a kind, friendly, down to
earth, and nerdy guy who will be missed by those he befriended.

Brothers Abroad
After college, one is never sure of the friends they will manage to keep, but even with the
distance separating them, some manage to sustain friendships that were kindled in college. I
consider myself lucky to have such a friendship with Brother Janith Samarasinghe. Coming home
with me numerous Thanksgivings to spend some time with my family, he always joked about
repaying the kindness my family showed him taking me home with him to Sri Lanka. This past
April I found out his offer was sincere, and I was honored with a two week trip to an island off the
southern tip of India to spend time in his country and with his family.
Our first stop was to the old Dutch Fort in Galle, sporting
some ancient well-kept colonial architecture, followed by the
Sinharaja rain forest. In the forest we got to see several gorgeous
animals including the Blue Magpie, Jungle Fowl (national bird
of Sri Lanka), Macaque monkeys, various types of lizards, and
even spiders the size of two of my hands – which was a little
more than unnerving... We also climbed the 12,000 step trail to
the top of Adam’s Peak, where I was treated to one of the most
beautiful views I’ve seen in my life.
Later in the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya, I got to see
ancient ruins of the palace and pleasure gardens built by King
Kasayapa. This trip in particular was memorable, as climbing a
660 foot tall rock in the middle of a forest resulted in a
breathtaking view of the land and the ruins of the King’s personal
pleasure garden. We topped our excursions off with an elephant
safari in a national park nearby where I got as close as I could
get to one of these giants, while still being able to admire their
grace and beauty.
One thing I truly miss after coming back to the US was the food. Not only was it proper to
eat with your hands, but the flavor and spice of the food was enough to leave your mouth numb
and your stomach pleasantly satisfied. Though I was glad to leave behind the Sri Lanka heat,
which can reach up to 35C (95F) daily and left me sweating for our entire two week trip.
I would like to conclude with the sincerest of thanks to Janith and his family. Their
kindness and hospitality made me truly feel at home during my whole trip. I hope to be able to
return in the near future, and recommend that anyone looking for a spectacularly exotic place to
visit need look no further than Sri Lanka.
Brothers Connely and Samarasinghe enjoying the fantastic view!

Undergraduate News
Passing of the Gavel
Congratulations, Br. Kozakov!
As of right now, our primary issue is our low number of members. Fortunately, this past
fall we had decently strong recruitment, obtaining a pledge class of 9 and hope to do even better
this spring. This spring we are aiming for a pledge class of 15 to keep us on track to increase our
numbers. The house is holding up well and we have several projects underway including a new DJ
booth and new pong tables for downstairs.
As president, I'd like to see us have a better presence on campus, specifically in the
engineering department. This will not only better our public relations, but will ultimately help
recruitment as well by attracting more potential members. Specifically, I plan on making sure we
get involved in collaborating with other engineering oriented organizations, in events such as
philanthropy.
Overall, I am excited to take on the position as president and to help take the Fraternity to
where it needs to be. My goal is to establish a set of concrete goals for each vice president, and to
effectively work as a collaborative team with the undergraduate executive board and the
brotherhood to accomplish them while forging a closer-knit brotherhood at the same time.
Thank You, Br. Marucci!
Under my iron fisted regime a few changes were made. First, we restructured the
constitution to have a more logical set up. We moved positions around to make more sense and
got rid of unneeded positions. Second, we added a new position, Vice President of Standards. This
position is in charge of making sure we have attainable standards, and that everyone meets these.
For example, making sure that people who are under a 3.0 GPA have access to study hours and
are going to them. We have also been rewriting our risk management policy and finishing our
brotherhood standards program. This program clearly outlines the standards that every brother
must meet and outlines punishments and how we will help everyone meet them.
This semester we got a pledge class of 7 men. They noticed that our pong tables were very
old and requested to make their pledge class project two new pong tables with built in legs. This
was granted and the brotherhood also decided to make a brotherhood project of a new
podium/entertainment stand for the downstairs. These projects will make the house nicer and will
help us with recruitment in the future.
I will be graduating this May with a degree in Computer Science. I am very thankful for
all the directions and opportunities Triangle has afforded me. I am very excited to see how Triangle
will be able to grow in the next semester and those after and I have a lot of faith in the executive
board that was just elected.
Br. Anthony Marucci ps’14 – Past President
Br. Roman Kozakov ps’15 – President

Brotherhood Development
We hosted several successful brotherhood events over the
course of the past two semesters. During the Fall semester, our
recruitment team enjoyed enthusiastic participation from the
brotherhood at recruitment events which resulted in a solid
recruitment drive and gave the brothers great opportunities to bond.
Before the Fall break, we hosted our very own “Friendsgiving”
meal, where brothers cooked different dishes together and we
enjoyed a delicious potluck-style dinner.
The congenial atmosphere of the house is evident by several
brothers occasionally hosting ad-hoc events for the house, including video game tournaments or
board game marathons, and is indicative of a very close knit brotherhood.
Overall, I have a positive feeling about the brotherhood’s character, and I’m confident that
we are headed in the right direction for growing our numbers and outreach.
Scobie In Review
Over this past summer I had the opportunity to attend the Herbert F. Scobie Leadership
School at the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology. Scobie is a weekend long program for Triangle
Brothers from all across the country that focused on making attendees better leaders in their chapter
and in the Fraternity as a whole.
One of the central ideas of the program came from a quote by Herbert Scobie, “In order to
have a better world, we must first have a world of better men.” The program focused heavily on
using our code of ethics and our values that we share as a fraternity to help make us and our
brothers better men. There were representatives there from most of the active chapters of Triangle
and some members from a few of the current colonies.
During the weekend of the event, several awards were given out to
deserving chapters. The Penn State chapter won several awards. We won the
publication trophy, received special acknowledgement for community service
and campus involvement, and Brother Rob Veltre received special
acknowledgment for outstanding leadership in our chapter. The experience
overall was very rewarding. It felt great being brought together through
Triangle and to be able to connect with Brothers from across the country who
hold the same ideals and values as I do.
Brothers and friends crowded around the “wholesome” spread at this year’s Friendsgiving.
Br. Aditya Naik ps’15 – Former New Member Educator
Congratulations on your recognition, Br. Veltre! Keep up the good work!

college, but who can also become great friends.”
Recruitment
This semester we reached over 80 potential new members and extended eleven bids to men
we believed would be great additions to our brotherhood. None of this would have been possible
without our recruitment director, Will Naughton, and our recruitment chair, Matt McPherson.
Also, special thanks to Brother Jacob Bunn for dedicating an enormous amount of time to assisting
the recruitment team this year. We hope to move forward with the knowledge of our success to
apply that to recruitment for Spring 2017.

The Next Generation
As the new member educator I have seen seven determined potentials grow into upstanding
men, who I believe will make great brothers. All in all I believe that these men make up a wonderful
pledge class, especially with completing all tasks given to them. Currently they are working on
their pledge class project which is building two new pong tables, complete with folding legs. I
have never seen a pledge class be so good with wearing their pins whenever they are at the house.
This semester we decided to omit the assignment of pledge class positions, as the Brotherhood
decided they were inefficient. Though it seemed to go smoothly, I believe it is too soon to tell and
look forward to working with the new new member educator to decide if the positions should be
brought back or not.

External Affiars
This past semester was a great one for us as a chapter. I am extremely proud of my brothers
for all that they do and I encourage you to read through the Lion’s Tale to hear more about what
we have been up to. In my department, the major things that happened this semester were
Homecoming and Extra Life.
I am sure you all have great memories of homecoming from your time at Penn State, and I
am glad to say that Triangle Fraternity has continued to perform above and beyond when that time
of the year comes around. Our Homecoming chair, Brother Joshua Langer, worked extremely hard
with our partners (Chi Phi and Phi Rho) to ensure that everything went smoothly. If you want to
hear more about homecoming, read his article below about all the work that went into it. Along
with our performance in homecoming, we also hosted our second annual philanthropy event called
Extra Life. For those of you who do not know, Extra Life is a twenty-four-hour video game
marathon to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. It is an incredible foundation and I
encourage you to check out their website, www.extralife.org if you want to know more about them.
Brother Brandon Wilt, our Community Service Chair, put countless hours into planning and setting
up for this event and we as a chapter cannot thank him enough for all of the work he put into this
great cause. Read his article on page 13 about the event for more information on what happened.
In closing, I’d like to remind you to follow our Facebook page for more future updates on
us and what we are up to as a chapter.
Homecoming
For homecoming this year we grouped in a triad with the
fraternity Chi Phi and the sorority Phi Sigma Rho. Our theme was
The Wizard of Oz. Our float design was the yellow brick road. The
float featured a pomped yellow brick road leading up to a large
emerald city at the back. Arching over the entire float was a large
rainbow. The float also featured the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion,
Todo, Dorthy, and a Flying Monkey. We also participated in the
Penn State for the Glory Talent Show. Our act was a skit of the Penn
State Wizard of Oz.

Extra Life 2016
Last year marked the beginning of our annual
philanthropy, Extra-Life. Extra-Life is a charity
organization that donates money to several hospitals
involved in the Children’s Miracle Network. Unlike other
charities Extra-Life is run a bit differently. All donations
are contributed to their website online which optimizes
the donation process to allow for more people to donate
with ease. The website even allows for you to donate to
the children’s hospital of your choosing.
This event is a 24-hour video game marathon that is held the first weekend in November.
For 24 hours we stream this event online for all to see. On our video stream we place a link to our
Extra-Life donation page so that we can receive donations from our viewers. What a time we live
in! The Brotherhood gets to play video games, which would have happened anyway, and for it we
can help those in need.
This year we played in classics such as the original Super Smash Bros and Mario Party, as
well as Hearthstone, Civilization V and Dungeons and Dragons to raise $527! We were also
sponsored by Luna 2 Woodgrill & Bar with some delicious pizza. We plan to make next year
bigger and better so please be sure to keep an eye out for our event page and to tell your friends
and family!
Facilities & Maintenance
House Improvements
New laminate wood flooring was installed in the study room, financed by the Bowman Chapter Endowment
Fund. The project was completed in the spring of 2016 by all of the active undergraduate brothers. Coming
up, we plan constructing as a brotherhood project: a new multimedia “DJ” booth and as well as getting a
new projector.
Sustainability
As of right now, we expanded our recycling in the house by adding more recycling bins in each room, as
well as the bathrooms. We also designated additional recycling bins for each type of material (i.e. paper,
cardboard, green glass, etc.).
Several Brothers enjoying both games and refreshments at our second annual Extra Lives event!
