The Family, also exhibited at the Foto8 Gallery 9 December – 24 January 2012, reveals in intimate detail the day to day life of one of London’s most notorious underworld families, The Pyles. Focusing on Joe Pyle and his brothers Warren, Alan and Mitch the story of The Family picks up where Bain Hogg’s previous book The Firm ended. Photographer Seamus Murphy writes of Bain Hogg in the book’s introduction: This time he shows another side of London’s gang world, and the irony is in the details. Time has passed, they’re a bit over-shadowed by more powerful international syndicates. Their movements are so closely scrutinised their social gatherings have to double as sotto voce business meetings. What are they whispering about? We will never know, and that’s the genius of this collection. This 176 page book contains 93 black and white photographs, faithfully reproduced on premium paper stock. From back-room bars, to birthday parties at home and boxing in the East End of London, Bain Hogg depicts the darker side of modern day London treating us to a worts and all view of the family and their associates. He notes: “The 18th century artist and reformer William Hogarth set the precedent for documenting this dark underbelly of society and in 21st century Britain, little has changed”. The Family is available from Foto8 in softback edition, £45, and in a limited hardback edition of 200 copies accompanied with a signed silver-gelatin photograph printed by the photographer, £150.
