The FarmsOur family of multi-generational farms are some of the most beautiful in the Northeast. The Farm Powered Program and our strategic partnership with the Dairy Farmers of America is helping farm families preserve the farming legacy for future generations.

Barstow’s Longview FarmHadley, Massachusetts

Barstow’s Longview Farm in Hadley, Massa-chusetts is a seventh-generation family farm, founded in the early 1800s. The 450-acre farm is a member of the Cabot Creamery/Agri-Mark Cooperative, has 550 cows, and produces 15,000 lbs. of milk daily. To sustain the farm for future generations, the Barstow family pursued an opportunity to house one of the first anaer-obic digesters in New England on the farm in 2013 and expanded in 2016. In 2016, the Farm Powered project at Longview Farm was awarded 2016 American Biogas Council Agricultural Project of the Year and the farm was awarded US Dairy Sustainability Award. Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery is a favorite meeting spot for locals.

Bar-Way Farm, Inc. Deerfield, Massachusetts

Bar-Way Farm, Inc. is a multi-generational dairy farm founded in 1936 and operated by the Melnik family. The farm milks 250 cows pro-ducing an average of 1,700 gallons of milk daily. The 600-acre farm is a member of the Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) Cooperative. The Farm-Powered Anaerobic Digester at Bar-Way Farm Inc. was built in 2016.

Crescent FarmHaverhill, Massachusetts

Crescent Farm, owned by the Davidowicz family, includes a dairy herd along with other crop operations and a farm store. The Farm Powered Anaerobic Digester there was completed in 2018. Shaw Farm in Dracut also provides manure to fuel the digester. The energy produced will be provided via net metering credits to power City of Haverhill facilities.

Jordan Dairy FarmsRutland, Massachusetts

Jordan Dairy Farms in Rutland, Massachusetts is a six-generation family farm, founded in 1885. The 950-acre farm is a member of the Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) Cooperative. Operated by brothers Randy and Brian Jordan, the farm has 800 Holstein cows and milks 300 cows daily. In addition to the dairy operation, the farm raises 700 hybrid double breasted white turkeys each year. The Farm Powered Anaerobic Digester at Jordan Dairy Farms was the first in New England. It was built in 2011 and expanded in 2016.

Jordan Dairy Farms Heifer FacilitySpencer, Massachusetts

Jordan Dairy Farms continues its commitment to sustaining the farm for future generations and protecting the environment. In 2019, the Jordan’s added a second Vanguard Renewables Farm Powered Anaerobic Digester at the Jordan Dairy Farms Heifer Facility in Spencer, Massachusetts. They are the first New England farm family to host two Farm Powered Anaerobic Digesters.

2018 Organics Recycler of the Year

Vanguard Renewables develops, constructs, owns, and operates farm-based clean energy systems. Our facilities recycle food waste and farm waste to produce safe and reliable Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) or Renewable Electricity (RE). Vanguard’s Farm Powered operating portfolio of anaerobic digesters represent the largest organics recycling destination in the Northeast, currently processing nearly 200,000 tons per year of combined on-farm and off-farm organics. We have Farm Powered co-digestion and manure-only anaerobic digestion projects in development across the U.S.

In Massachusetts, Vanguard’s Farm Powered facilities recycle and process 500 tons per day of food waste and 120 tons per day of manure from farms and leading Massachusetts food manufacturers, businesses, institutions, and food users.

Farmers are Stewards of the LandGenerational farms are the backbone of the Vanguard Renewables’ Farm Powered Organics to Energy program. Each farm is carefully selected to host a digester project and is compensated for the land leased by Vanguard for the facility. The farms also benefit from enhanced manure management that reduces on-farm methane emissions and odor by more than 85 percent. Additionally, they receive high potency fertilizer for increased crop production, organic bedding material for cow comfort, and reduced energy costs.

Each 1MW Farm Powered Anaerobic Digester processes 100% of the farm’s manure combined with 100 TPD of unused organics from food processing and food preparation operations. This produces 7,700 MWh of renewable energy annually, equivalent to the needs of 1,600 homes, and offsets 5,500 lbs. of CO2 emissions daily.
