Article Overview• Combating terrorism is the FBI’s top priority.• In joining with partners the FBI is able to

locate, track, and neutralize terrorist cells and activity around the US.

• The overall goal being to reduce and ultimately eliminate terrorism both international and domestic in the United States and to US interests and allies around the world.

that also disregards state and federal law.• Appears to be intended, to intimidate or coerce

the population, to influence the policy of a government by intimidation, aggressiveness or coercion.

• Attempts to effect the government’s effects by mass destruction or assassination.

• Occurs within the US Territories.

• Terrorism plays a large role in effecting the globalization and economic status of the world.

• The largest terrorist attack in the world which was 9/11 cost economies billions of dollars.

• Acts of terrorism directly inflict direct and indirect costs on economies. Direct costs are generally smaller and include the following: Destruction of life and property, responses from emergency providers, restoration of systems and infrastructure and the provision of temporary living assistance.

• Indirect costs of terrorism: Can be much larger as they effect the economy in the medium term by undermining consumer and investigator confidence.

• Terrorism can also have a long term cost by increasing security measures, creating higher insurance premiums and raising the cost of other counter terrorism operations.

• In addition, terrorism creates direct economic destruction, increase uncertainty in the markets, effect insurance, trade and tourism and increase nationalism and foreign skepticism.

• A decade after 9/11, the New York Times published a survey in which they estimated the true costs of the 9/11 attacks.

• Toll and Physical Damage: $55 Billion• Economic Impact: $123 Billion• Homeland Security: $589 Billion• War Funding: $1,649 Billion• Future War/Veterans Care: $867 Billion

• In addition, the New York Times estimated that business interruption cost around $22 Billion and that $100 Billion was lost from the reduction of airline travels.

Terrorism For The FBI

• The rise of terrorism over the past sixteen years provides the FBI with the opportunity for expansion, new partnerships, and new possibilities for combating terrorism.

• In addition allows for the increased role of organizational communication and activity.

Roles in the FBI• Combating Terrorism requires many roles

on a large playing field.• These roles include: investigators,

analysts, linguists, SWAT Teams, in addition to other specialists from different agencies that offer assets when it comes to fighting the war on terror.

National Counter Terrorism Center

• The National Counter Terrorism Center is a location that bring specialists from the FBI, CIA and other agencies to band together against the war on Terrorism.

• It is here that true organizational communication is seen at play within the NCTC.

• NCTC’s Mission Statement: Lead our nation’s effort to combat terrorism at home and abroad by analyzing the threat, sharing information with our partner’s and integrating all instruments of national power to ensure the unity of effort.

• The NCTC plays a major role in organizational communication as far as terrorism is concerned. Forces are able to coordinate and share valuable information and data with other organizations in the effort to stop terrorism together.

Joint Terrorist Task Force

• The FBI also has created what is called the Joint Terrorist Task Force.

• What is JTTF? Small cells of special agents that chase down leads, collect evidence, collect and share evidence and intelligence, and respond to threats.

• Based in 104 cities nation wide.

• They enable a shared intelligence across all agencies.

• They pool together knowledge, data, information and skills into team coordinated efforts.

• Intelligence and data is shared freely across all levels.

• They are a prime example of how organizational communication works in an organization.

Conclusion• Terrorism has major impacts on globalization

and the economic process. It affects businesses, airlines, stocks, security and premium insurance.

• It has majorly effected how forces around the world (specifically the FBI and the JTTF) must use organizational communication in order to stop a prime enemy.

• In conclusion, the FBI must fully rely on organizational communication in order to neutralize domestic and international threats.
