My dear friends, The Day of Pentecost, coming, as it does, in late May or early June, was probably a beautiful day, for by that time of the year the weather in the Holy Land is glorious. It was a day of festival, a day of celebration for the spring harvest and people from all over Israel would have come to Jerusalem to rejoice. Our Lady, St Peter and the rest of the disciples were gathered together, probably in the Upper Room. When suddenly, there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting! Then divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. But Pentecost didn't end when the wind died down and the flames disappeared. It went on. It gave Peter and the disciples courage, inspiring them to move from silence to bold speech for Christ. It affected a man like Paul, striking him to the ground on the road to Damascus. The fire that was ignited in the hearts of those who experienced the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on that day has continued to illuminate the world. The effects of that Holy Spirit’s presence in the hearts and lives of believers down through the ages have been revealed in a multitude of ways. “For there are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit,” says St. Paul. Beginning on the Day of Pentecost itself, the bold proclamation of Jesus, the Risen Saviour and Lord began. A boldness that is captured in the words of Peter, as he speaks before the Sanhedrin which forbade him to speak or teach in the name of Jesus. Peter replies, “It is impossible for us not speak about what we have seen and heard.” To speak about what one has seen and heard. To give witness. This is the fire that lies at the heart of all the gifts the Spirit lavishes on the Church at Pentecost, gifts that came to us too at our Baptism and Confirmation. Gifts that testify to the Risen Jesus who lives on in and through the Church. On this Pentecost Sunday, let us implore the Holy Spirit to awaken our slumbering hearts and remove the blindness from our eyes, so that we may see and hear Jesus, our Risen Lord, and that we might be given, through the

Spirit’s manifold gifts, the grace to proclaim him. To be his witnesses!

A Prayer for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit:

O Lord Jesus Christ, Who, before ascending into heaven, didst promise to send the Holy Ghost to finish Thy work in the souls of Thy Apostles and Disciples, grant the same Holy Spirit to me, that He may perfect in my

soul the work of Thy grace and Thy love. Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of

this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal, the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Thy divine truth, the Spirit of Counsel that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing

God and gaining Heaven, the Spirit of Fortitude that I may bear my cross with Thee, and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation, the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and

know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, the Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable,

the Spirit of Fear that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God, and may dread in any way to displease Him.

Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of Thy true disciples and animate me in all things with Thy Spirit. Amen.
