The 2014 Syllabus
On behalf of the committee of Dudley Festival of Music, Drama & Dance, may I introduce the
2014 syllabus. The Committee hopes that you will give us your full support in 2014. Please take
time to browse through the whole syllabus, not just the part where your interest lies. Look at all
that is offered, as I am sure you will be surprised at the range of classes.
After browsing, tell one or two of your colleagues about areas you know they are interested in. It
would be lovely to have more entries in one or two areas - Strings, Guitars, Keyboard, Brass,
Orchestras and Choirs, all have classes where more entries would be welcomed. It is much better
to perform in front of an audience than just a family member and the Adjudicator. Please spread
the word, to schools etc that you know have enthusiastic choirs and a lot of musical, dramatic or
dance activities taking place. This would make the Festival even more successful.
As a Festival, the committee is always seeking out opportunities to develop talent and 2014 is no
exception. We have had to look at an area which caused concern for a few years – number of
volunteers and also the number of hours available. Because of this, unfortunately the number of
classes competitors under 18 years may enter has had to be limited to three in any discipline.
However as numbers have continued to increase, once the days have been filled any extra entries
will have to be returned. This step has only been taken as a last resort. We want to make sure the
Festival is manageable and a happy event. We are aware that competitors may have to move to
another room while a class is progressing (this will be taken into consideration when the class
order is decided / or where Official Accompanists need to be at any one time). Therefore
competitors are requested not to change the order unless it is an emergency. We hope that this
change will be acceptable. We are always ready to listen to any comments you may have.
The Festival is very grateful for the support it receives from local people and organizations.
Without this help the Festival would be struggling. The Friends of the Festival and The Dudley
Rotary Club have helped in many ways over the years. If competitors have to have to be turned
away it will be because we have not got enough help. For a Festival of the size we are, on Festival
Days we do need a lot of help and cannot manage without sufficient cover in the interests of the
safety of all who enter.
The Festival is for everyone, so if you enjoy the Arts, please join us either as a competitor or as a
supporter. I can assure you that you will be very welcome. If you can spare a couple of hours
helping with one of the many jobs, before and on the day, please get in touch with us.(Perhaps
after your class has finished) As the Festival grows, more and more help is needed.
Unfortunately at the moment The Friends of the Festival has ceased. We do not have any grants so
all the costs of running the Festival have to be covered by fees, programmes and admission fees.
With the ever rising costs fees have to rise. If anyone feels they could form a Friends group which
could raise money towards the costs incurred, please contact the Chairman. If this happened then
the costs would not have to be passed on to competitors.
Please help the Festival Committee to make Festival 2014 very successful.

ENTRY IS DEEMED TO BE AN ACCEPTANCE OF THESE RULES
Data Protection – The information you supply to Dudley Festival of Music,
Drama & Dance on the entry form will be used for the purposes of
administration of the Festival, collation of entries, results and certificate
production. The information will be stored in a database which will be kept
securely. Information will not be kept for any longer than necessary and will not
be passed on to any third party.
Flash photography ,video recording, tape recording, or CD recording during
any performance / adjudication is prohibited.
Video recorders may not be taken into competition rooms under any
circumstances.
Mobile Phones must be turned off at all times in Competition Rooms.
ALL SECTIONS
1) The competition is for amateurs and students who do not derive the main part of their income from
payment of work, in that branch of the art, as defined by the class title in which s/he seeks to enter the
Festival. In any ensemble, all members must adhere to that principle. This rule does not apply to
conductors.
2) No entry under an assumed name is permissible.
3) Competitors must comply with the age limit. The competitor’s age at the date of the commencement of
the Festival (2 March 2014 for Music and Drama classes, except Cranmer Awards, and 1 January
2014 for Dance classes) will be deemed to be their age for purposes of entry. Please see Drama Classes
rules for required age in Cranmer Award classes. Date of birth must be included on entry forms as
requested. In any case of dispute, competitors may be asked to produce their birth certificate.
4) Alternative or additional adjudicators may be appointed as necessary.
5) The adjudicator’s decision is final and no discussion or correspondence concerning such decision may
ensue. Awards may be withheld if, in the opinion of the adjudicator, sufficient merit is not shown.
6) Objections will not be considered, by the committee unless they are given to a member of the
committee, in writing, at the end of the session to which they refer.
7) The committee may combine sections or classes where entries are small, divide a class where entries
are large, and has the power to make any other regulations or interpret or qualify any of these rules as
occasion may arise.
8) Time limits must not be exceeded. Performances which overrun by more than 15 seconds will
receive an adjudication but no mark shall be awarded.
9) Winners of trophies MUST sign a receipt. Winners under the age of 18 must obtain the signature of a
legally responsible person on the trophy receipt. In accepting a trophy the winner undertakes to keep it
safely and return it in good, clean condition to the Trophies Secretary by the date requested on the
form. Failure to do so may incur a penalty. LOST TROPHIES MUST BE REPLACED AND
DAMAGED TROPHIES REPAIRED. A trophy may be engraved with the winner’s name at his, or
her, expense.

10) Trophies, money prizes and 1 st prize medals and certificates will only be awarded if the requisite mark
is obtained. (See rule 33 – Dance, and rules 68 & 69 – Music and Drama). 2 nd
and 3 rd
certificates will
be awarded in all classes irrespective of marks awarded as long as a first certificate has been awarded.
11) All entries must be made on the official form and forwarded, with fees, to the appropriate secretary,
NO LATER THAN THE DATE SPECIFIED. Entries sent by e-mail will be processed once payment
has been received.
12) Competitors enter the Festival with the understanding that no guarantee can be given at the time of
entry as to which day classes shall be held (Saturday/Sunday.) No refunds of fees shall be made. The
Festival also reserves the right to hold classes on either weekend if numbers warrant this. If the
Festival is over-subscribed the Festival reserves the right to return entries from the over-
subscribed classes.
13) It is necessary for teachers and parents to be aware of their responsibilities in entering any performers
/supporters with limited physical capabilities or special needs given the potential limitations imposed
by the stage and surrounding environment. ie. should the disability be considered in determining room
allocation.
14) It is necessary (preferably at the time of entry) for teachers / parents / entrants to inform Festival
secretaries of any relevant information regards the entry, that could impact on the adjudicators work, ie
any circumstances that the adjudicator needs to be aware of.
15) Unreasonable/unacceptable behaviour from competitors / supporters will not be tolerated towards
stewards and may result in disqualification & future entries refused.
DANCE CLASSES
16) The Festival does not accept liability for the infringement of copyright, recording or performing rights
arising out of any entrant’s accompaniment or performance. It contributes to a Group Licence to cover
payment of fees for the use of recorded music at its events. Teachers and Choreographers using tapes
created from commercial recordings are advised that they are themselves responsible for seeking
permission to record, from the recording companies concerned.
17) Communication with the adjudicator concerning any matters relating to the competition by entrants,
teachers or other interested parties prior to or during the competition may lead to disqualification.
Infringements/queries should be brought to the attention of the ‘Dance Secretary’.
18) Performers must dance in the correct programme order unless the permission of the adjudicator is
obtained. The committee reserves the right to rearrange the order of dance groups on the day of the
festival. It is the responsibility of entrants to report 15 minutes before the start of the class.
19) It is the responsibility of the entrants to set tapes ready to play. All tapes should be clearly marked, and
the organisers do not accept any responsibility for incorrect playing of any tape except in the event of
equipment failure.
20) Where live music is used it is the responsibility of the entrant to bring both the accompanist and the
instrument.
21) In All classes competitors must dance within their age code only. The competitor’s age on 1 January
2014 will be deemed to be their age for purposes of entry. Date of birth must be given on entry forms.
In any case of dispute, competitors may be asked to produce their birth certificate.
22) Incomplete entries will not be accepted. Ie: 1 entry for a duet or two entries for a trio etc: The name of
every competitor taking part must be listed on the group entry form. No late entries will be
accepted.
23) No performer may enter the same class more than once in their own age group for each solo section. In
the Duet/Trio sections a competitor may enter twice in a class with a different partner (in their age
group).

24) Solo dancers may not be substituted but in the event of the unavoidable absence of a partner one
substitute will be allowed in a duet and trio; three in a group. Rule 21 will still apply and the
organisers must be warned a minimum of one day before the class. On Festival days, no changes will
be accepted.
25) Time limits must not be exceeded. Timing will begin at the first note or word of the accompaniment or
first movement of the dancer, whichever occurs first.
26) In character dance, a short synopsis not exceeding 30 words will be allowed.
27) If pre-recorded music is used in any song and dance section it MUST NOT include any singing or
chanting on the cassette. Pre-recorded music used in tap sections must not include any recorded tap or
similar sound effect.
28) Pointe work is not allowed for any entrant under 13 years old.
29) Fixed taps (single sound) only may be used for tap dancing.
30) Gymnastic dance is permitted provided that it is combined with a modern dance technique.
31) In duets, trios and groups, entry forms must show the subject to be performed i.e Tap, Modern,
Song and Dance, Character, Greek, etc. and have Song and Dance or Character indicated. Failure to do this will mean the entry form will be returned for further information. Should entries be
Sufficiently large they will be split into sections according to the subject or if classes are too small they
will be amalgamated. A competitor may only enter a duet/trio class once.
32) Unreasonable/unacceptable behaviour will not be tolerated and may result in disqualification & future
entries refused.
33) Competitors placed 1 st will receive a 1
st prize medal and certificate only if the mark obtained is at least
81 in classes with age codes A, B, and C. In classes with Age codes D and E the mark obtained must
be at least 84. 2 nd
and 3 rd
certificates will be awarded in all classes irrespective of marks awarded. If
certificates cannot be collected at the close of the Festival, they can be sent if an envelope has been
addressed and left in the office with a fee of £1.50 to cover postage.
34) Winners of Overall Dance Trophies will be notified at the conclusion of the Festival so they can be
collected..
MUSIC CLASSES 35) In Solo and Duet classes where the age limit is 18 years and under competitors may enter a
maximum of three classes in any one discipline eg. May enter three Piano, three woodwind and
three vocal classes. Classes for Ensembles, Bands and choirs are exempt from this rule so members
can still enter three solo classes.
36) In graded and own choice pieces, it is important to complete the appropriate section on the entry form
regarding the time of the piece. This information is required in order for the timetable to be compiled.
Failure to provide this information may result in the non-acceptance of the entry.
37) Title of Own Choice music must be filled in. This must be the actual piece and not the title of the
Book.
38) No competitor is allowed to perform the same item in more than one own choice class, except in the
case of Choirs and Chamber Music classes providing a different instrument is played. Competitors
may act as accompanists.
39) In all own choice classes a copy of the music must be given to the adjudicator’s steward just
before performance. Failure to do so may result in disqualification. Own choice pieces may not be
changed for any reason. This includes only playing part of the chosen programme, where mark
will reflect this. If there is no music copy for the Adjudicator or the piece has been changed, an
adjudication will be given but no marks awarded.
40) STRINGS BEGINNERS CLASS. This class is for competitors who have been learning their
instrument for less than one year and have not reached the standard of the Graded Classes

41) GRADED CLASSES Competitors should enter the class of the Grade they are working at
(eg Grade 3). The piece must be chosen from any of standard graded examination syllabus of the
relevant grade. For competitors who wish to enter with more than one instrument, this is allowed, but
the same rule will apply.
42) The music chosen for the competition must be used in the edition specified.
43) In test pieces no repeats should be performed unless otherwise specified. Repeats in own choice
pieces are optional.
44) COPYRIGHT. When an own choice work is selected from a volume and it is not published
separately, one copy, which must be totally legible, may be made for the use of the Adjudicator
provided that the copy is destroyed after the competition. The copy in vocal classes must have the
melody line.This permission does not apply to making copies for the accompanist who must be
supplied with the printed copy. Single copies of items selected may not be copied without the prior
permission of the copyright holder. Failure to comply with this will result in disqualification.
No photocopies to be used by the competitor or members of ensembles / bands unless they have
written consent from the copyright holder.
45) INSTRUMENTAL WARM UP. For Brass, Woodwind, Recorders , String and Guitars, as a room
will have been allocated for Warming Up of Instruments, only fine tuning will be allowed in the
competition room – no more than one minute per individual, two minutes per ensemble & five
minutes for School Bands with more than twelve players. Unfortunately, no warm up room will be
available for Piano or vocal.
46) Since part of a performance is the ability to liaise between the performers in Duets /Trios / Quartets,
the presence of conductors is not allowed.
47) For Ensembles (up to 8 players) aged 14 years and over, tuning should be done by the group/ensemble
themselves.
48) PIANO SOLO – 20th CENTURY. The following composers are suggested as a stylistic guideline:
Bartok, Copland, Chavez, Dallapiccola, Hindemith, Messiaen, Prokofiev, Schoënberg, Stravinsky,
Tippett, Webern. Entries offering alternative choices will be considered, provided the style of music is
deemed appropriate.
49) JAZZ PIANO. A copy of the original music on which the improvisation is based must be provided
for the adjudicator on the day of the festival.
The following are examples of possible choices for each of the 3 options:
a) ‘Bedford Square Blues’ from grade 1 and ‘Ikon’ from grade 4
b) ‘Viper’s Drag’ and ‘Handful of Keys’
c) ‘How Deep is the Ocean’ and ‘Sweet Lorraine’
50) RECITAL CLASSES. A good standard of performance is expected, but performance from memory
is not obligatory. Competitors should aim to give a balanced programme, wear suitable dress and
display a good platform manner. Recital pieces must not be repeated in other classes.
51) COMPOSITION CLASSES. In all three classes the composition can be for any instrument/s and/or
voice/s and in any musical style within the specified time limit. For class 161 the composition may be
either an individual or group-devised composition. For class 161 a good quality taped recording of the
composition will be accepted in place of a written score.
Classes 162 and 163 should be individual. A written score must be provided for classes 162 and 163.
It may employ conventional or graphic notation, or both. Any unconventional notation employed
should be fully explained.
Composers in all classes may, if they wish, supply both written score and taped performance of their
work.
Please send your completed entry form by the closing date (7 th
December) and your composition
to the music secretary by 20 January 2014. For the purposes of adjudication on Festival Day, each
composer must produce either a live or taped performance of their composition.

b) Competitors are entitled to set up their instruments before the session begins. (8.00am- 9-00am)
c) In Classes 36 - 40 the use of musical sequencing and programmed disc drives is NOT permitted.
However the use of floppy discs/SD cards for the purpose of setting registrations is permitted.

You are required to state whether you are using Single Fingered or Fingered Chords.
Information regarding choice of registration and any changes (Style and Voice) for pieces, must
be marked on the adjudicator’s copies.
d) In Classes 41 and 42 Real time sequencing is permitted subject to the following regulations:

MIDI Tracks and Step Record are strictly forbidden. It must be REAL TIME record,
actively performed by the participating student and no other person
That it is of a performance standard appropriate to the general musicianship shown by the
participant during the performance
That such features enhance the performance in a musical and appropriate way.
That sequencing parts are clearly marked in the music score provided for the adjudicator.
Note: Marks will be deducted for overuse.
e) Floppy disks may be used to allow for quick registration set-up.
f) If forbidden recording devices are used (c i ) an adjudication but no mark will be given.
g) Information required in b) ii or c) iv is not on the adjudicator’s copy, again an adjudication but no mark
will be given.
h) A copy (with required details) must be handed to the Adjudicator prior to performance.
53) ACCOMPANIMENT
Competitors requiring the services of the official accompanist must make the request on the entry form.
A small contribution for this service is required. £6 for classes where the age limit is 16years and under
& up to and including Grade 5 in Graded Classes, £10 for Open Classes, 17 yrs and above, and Grades
6 and above, £10 for Choirs and £30 for Recital Classes. This Fee must be included with entry and is
non-returnable.
A copy of the own choice music, clearly labelled with name of competitor and class number, must
be sent to the Accompanists’ Secretary: Mr Ben Kennedy, 69 Princes Gardens, Codsall,
Wolverhampton, WV8 2DL, NO LATER THAN January 17th. (Mr. Kennedy will contact and
send music to the accompanists). Where possible, each piece to be placed in a wallet, unless a
volume has been sent. The copy must not be stapled / cellotaped together. PLEASE DO NOT
FOLD MUSIC AND SEND IN A LARGE ENVELOPE. A further copy will be required for the
adjudicator on the day. At the discretion of the Accompanist, a rehearsal may be arranged prior to the Festival. If this is
required, the competitor should negotiate with the Accompanist, as an extra fee will be charged for this
service.
Note: If music is not provided, or contact made, by JANUARY 17TH, IT WILL BE ASSUMED
THAT ALTERNATIVE ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE AND THAT THE SERVICES
OF THE OFFICIAL ACCOMPANIST ARE NO LONGER REQUIRED. To avoid disappointment,
it is strongly advised that music should be sent by recorded post. Proof of posting will be necessary
if music arrives too late for the Accompanist to accept.
54) VOCAL/SPEECH CLASSES (123 and 131)
The song for this class is to be any English Song from 18 th
or 19 th
spoken and sung elements should be memorized.
In these classes the competitor is required to either speak the poem or speak about the song
chosen as well as sing it etc. as Speech and Singing are adjudicated EQUALLY.
55) SONGS FROM THE SHOWS
All performances using shows in current production are subject to copyright law. They may be
sung as a concert item, ie. with no costume without the need for copyright permission.

DRAMA CLASSES
56) In Solo / Duologue classes where the age is 18years and under competitors may enter a
maximum of three classes. Classes for Choral Verse / Group Acted Scenes are
exempt from this rule.
57) No properties will be provided. Costumes, make-up and hand properties are allowed.
58) The Dudley Festival is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement with the Author’s
Licensing and Collecting Society. This means that entrants do not have to seek copyright permission
for any poetry, prose or solo dramatic items performed. DUOLOGUES AND GROUP DRAMATIC
ACTIVITY ARE NOT COVERED BY THIS AGREEMENT, and the competitors in classes 183 and
232(Choral Verse Speaking), 180, 200, 201, 225, 226, (Acted Scene) and 182, 204, 205, 206, 230, 231
(Duologue) are responsible for obtaining Performing Rights by application to the publishers and by
payment of any stipulated fee, before the date of the competition. If anyone is unsure what they need
to do in this respect, they should call 01625 428297, the British & International Federation of
Festivals, for advice.
59) Dance Drama groups are responsible for providing their own music, live or taped.
60) For classes 179, 207, and 240, copies of own composition poems should be sent with entry.
61) In own composition and group–devised classes a short introduction of not more than 60 words will
be allowed.
62) In all own choice classes, a copy of the piece to be performed must be given to the adjudicator’s
Steward just before the performance.
63) IMPORTANT Due to the likelihood of young children being present in the Competition Room, if
The content of your performance is not suitable for a young audience, the Drama Secretary must be
informed at the time of Entry.
64) Own choice pieces may not be changed for any reason. If changed, or no copy is provided, an
adjudication will be given but no mark awarded.
65) In classes 173, 190, 191, 213, 214 and 237, the poem should be read from a copy and not recited
from memory.
66) Group Poem Special class is non-competitive class for Competitors who have a learning disability.
67) Cranmer Awards Entries are open to all who are between the ages of 11 and 18years on 1 st February
2015. Rules and conditions are available from the Drama Secretary.
MUSIC AND DRAMA CLASSES
68) 1 st prize certificates will be awarded in all classes provided the mark obtained is at least 81 in classes
for 12 years and under and Grade 1-3 classes, and 84 marks in all other classes. 2 nd
and 3 rd
certificates
will be awarded in all classes irrespective of marks awarded as long as a 1 st certificate has been
awarded. If certificates cannot be collected at the close of the Festival, they can be sent if an envelop
has been addressed and left in the office with a fee of £1.50 to cover postage.
69) A 1 st prize medal will be awarded in all classes (except bands, choirs, ensembles and choral speech
groups) with specified age limit up to 18 years, provided the mark obtained is at least 81 in classes for
12 years and under and Grade 1-3 classes, and 84 marks in all other classes.

A Performance limited in its communication A performance with an overall need for artistic development
MODERATE (78 – 80)
A Performance showing development of technique and /or communication
A generally secure performance in notes and rhythm at a reasonable tempo but with limited attention
to detail and tonal qualities.
A performance showing adequate technique. Musicality and expression require further development.
A performance of some ability but requiring greater vocal and physical expression.
MERIT (81 – 83)
A capable performance showing some artistic appreciation and /or technical ability.
A generally fluent performance with some awareness of tone and style.
A performance generally accurate in technique with some expression and musicality.
A performance showing a degree of ability in presentation with developing modulation and
interpretation.
A convincing performance technically and artistically
An assured performance with clear evidence of tonal and stylistic qualities and instrumental or vocal
features although there may be moments of imprecision.

MUSIC SYLLABUS ADJUDICATORS
ALAN MACLEAN DipMusEdRSAMD.FTCL(PP) PGCE
Alan MacLean graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, receiving the award for
the most outstanding student. Further study followed with internationally renowned pianists, including
Karl Schnabel. He is much in demand as a chamber musician, having played with many of the country's
leading instrumentalists and premiered Malcolm Arnold's Trio Bourgeoises. In 2010 he and the viola
player Carol Hubel-Allen formed the Karadys Duo, the pair enjoying a busy schedule that included an
appearance at last year's Cheltenham Music Festival.
In the mid-nineties, Albany Records approached Alan MacLean and Peter Lawson with the idea of
exploring the wealth of twentieth century music written for piano duet. Their first recording, English
Music for Piano Duet, received critical acclaim and a Disc of the Year nomination, moving one critic to
write, “I cannot recall ever hearing a piano duo with such perfect unanimity before. Peter Lawson and
Alan MacLean appear to be in total sympathy not just with one another, but with all the music they play.”
(International Record Review) Similar accolades followed on release of their second album, British Music
for Piano Duet.
After twenty years as Head of Keyboard Studies at The Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Alan left to explore a
number of musical projects. He gives master classes for young pianists and chamber music players, and
enjoys a busy schedule of adjudicating in the UK and overseas.

PIANO MICHAEL YOUNG BA MMUS ARCM
Michael Young was brought up in the West Midlands and studied piano with Lilian Niblette and
composition with Charles Hutchings. Following academic studies at university he continued his piano
studies with David Parkhouse at the Royal College of Music, where he was a double prizewinner, and he
was also a prizewinner in the National Piano Concerto Competition in Dudley in 1977.
He has performed regularly as recitalist, concerto soloist and in chamber music in Europe, USA and SE
Asia, giving many first performances and broadcasts of contemporary music as well as making a special
study of the works of Korngold. He has recently worked in duo partnerships with Christopher Horner
(violin) and Ioan Davies (cello).
Michael has been active as a piano teacher for 40 years and has given masterclasses and lectures all over
the world. He was Head of Keyboard at Wells Cathedral School for 20 years, developing a department
with an international reputation for excellence, and is now Professor of Piano at both the Royal Academy
of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He has lectured at both institutions on the Art
of Piano Teaching.
Many of his former students have gone on to international success and careers as performers and teachers.
He is much in demand as a festival adjudicator and is on the Examining, Diploma, Jazz and Presenter
panels of the ABRSM. He has given many presentations and workshops for EPTA both in the UK and
internationally.
PHILIP DEWHURST BA.HONS PGCE
Philip Dewhurst was born and educated in Bolton, Lancashire. He read Music at the University of
Newcastle upon Tyne under Professor Denis Matthews and specialised in performance on the Oboe. After
completing his degree, he completed a Post Graduate Certificate of Education after which he went into
teaching full-time teaching.
Philip gives occasional recitals and enjoys orchestral and chamber music playing on a freelance basis
when his teaching commitments permit. As well as adjudicating at music festivals around the country,
Philip is an examiner for Trinity College, London and an experienced GCSE and A Level examiner and
moderator.
At present he is Director of Music at a leading independent school in Cheshire.
.VOCAL SOLO
ANGELA ROWLEY BA (HONS), PGCE, ARCM
Angela, a graduate in German from University College, London, followed a career in teaching before
embarking on voice training, working with many eminent teachers including the late Paul Hamburger.
Her first experiences of public performance were at school, in Choral Societies and at Music Festivals. She
encourages her pupils to enter festivals for the opportunity to perform, hear peers and receive professional
critique.
She still performs regularly in recital, concert and oratorio. She loves to sing Lieder, chansons and
especially 20th century English song.
Angela directs and conducts Harmony '96, which performs major oratorios. She is MD of Eccles
Community Choir, enjoying an opportunity to develop the voices of those who were never allowed in the
school choir!
For several years Angela taught singing in a large comprehensive school and later in a Sixth Form College
where she formed a choir, assisted in the production of musicals and initiated the development of music in
the curriculum for students with both mild and severe learning difficulties. She is a firm believer that
music is an essential life skill and that no one should be excluded on the grounds of ability.
Angela’s students and choir have featured in Radio 3’s ‘Discovering Music’ as part of the BBC
Philharmonic’s Education Programme, in the Proms at the Albert Hall. In 2012 a similar project
celebrated the Philharmonic’s move to Media City. The resulting composition was performed for the
Queen on her visit to Salford.
Angela has a thriving private practice. She regularly runs performance workshops and masterclasses.

VOCAL SOLO / CHOIRS ANDREA CALLADINE ARCM ABSM
Andrea Calladine has a varied career as performer, teacher, conductor and adjudicator. She studied
initially at the Birmingham School of Music (now Birmingham Conservatoire) gaining honours in
Diplomas and was awarded many major prizes. As a singer, she has travelled widely at home and in
Europe performing from her wide concert and oratorio repertoire including performances from Messiah
and the Creation through the Mozart Masses to Dvorak Stabat Mater, the Requiems of Brahms, Faure and
Rutter and she has made radio broadcasts.
Operatic roles have included Despina in Cosi fan Tutti; Miss Wordsworth in Britten’s Albert Herring;
Adele and Rosalinda in De Fledermaus; Dido in Dido and Aeneas.
Andrea’s teaching commitments are divided between a very busy private practice where she coaches
many professional singers, a leading Independent School and the Birmingham Conservatoire where she
has been a tutor since 1985. Other positions held have been at Birmingham Junior Conservatoire, the Elgar
School of Music, Leicester University and Worcester University. Andrea is an active adjudicator member
of the British & International Federation of Festivals, where she hopes to bring not only her wealth of
experience as both teacher and performer but also her love of singing, encouragement to the competitors
and above all, a sense of humour.

Stephen trained as a teacher of Drama, Speech and Movement at Trinity and All Saints College, University
of Leeds. After qualifying, he studied with Eliner Rutherford for a number of years, gaining specialist
diplomas in the teaching and performance of all aspects of Speech and Drama Studies. As well as being
responsible for drama at the schools in which he worked, he also taught pupils of all ages and abilities
privately, from complete beginners to Licentiate (RAM) and Fellowship (LCM) level. For a time he was also
a voice coach to undergraduate students who were experiencing communication difficulties in the classroom
situation. He became an examiner for The English Speaking Board and The Poetry Society and also enjoyed
adjudicating at many festivals throughout the country.
Since retiring from the headship of a primary school in Derbyshire in July 2007, he has been appointed as an
examiner for The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and has resumed his work as an
Adjudicator Member of the British and International Federation of Festivals.
When not examining or adjudicating, Stephen’s leisure time consists of seeing as many plays and operas as
possible and teaching his young grandchildren to swim.
SUSAN MACKAY ALAM LLAM DDA
For 10 years, Susan Mackay ran The Fylde Stage School teaching all levels of RAD and ISTD dance and
LAMDA speech and drama before graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama. After
seasons in repertory theatre, touring and TV, she decided that it was time to realize other dreams. She now
directs Upstage Drama teaching speech and drama, GSCE drama and Upstage Young Peoples’ Theatre. She
also directs Bare Boards Theatre Company and adjudicates at Festivals throughout the UK as well as Cork
and Hong Kong. She currently teaches A level Theatre Studies at Runshaw College, Leyland. She sees her
role as an adjudicator as a combination of bringing new ideas and approaches to text and performance as
well as fresh encouragement to every competitor and feels that everyone should leave the Festival feeling
they have won.
MARYROSE SWARBRICK Maryrose has worked extensively at all levels in the theatre, amateur and professional, in
everything from pantomime to Shakespeare. Her diverse roles have included Liesl in The
Sound of Music, principal boy in Aladdin, Mabel in Mack and Mabel, Roxy Hart in Chicago,
Madame Dindon in Cage au Folles, Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lyons in Blood

Brothers. Her voice was opera trained by former Covent Garden soloist Brian Geldard.
With her daughters she founded Stage Door, a long-established school of performing arts and
theatre company, which is now the main focus of her attention after managing to combine all
her interests with her former role as Head of Drama at St Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst College for
16 years. More recently, she also has developed a personal interest and considerable expertise
in sound, lighting and other technical aspects of staging and production.
However, musical theatre remains her first love, and as a director and choreographer she loves
nothing more than to encourage the young (and not-so-young) in all aspects of dance and
drama, a mission enhanced in recent years as her role as adjudicator.
