Applique a Fashionable Shopper Sylvie Plested During this workshop you will have a variety of motifs available, dogs, cats, birds, cockerel, butterflies and more. You will decorate the bag with these motifs, using a simple blanket stitch but also some fancy hand stitching will be taught to decorate your bag and make it personal to you. Archaeology Needle Book Tamara Schultz, Sweden In this workshop students baste string and/or other flat objects to layers of batting and then “bury” them by stitching a layer of fabric over the top. Students then add more quilting to the piece and then highlight the buried objects using Decolourant, an easy to use, heat activated, colour remover. This small block is then sewn together along with felt into a unique needle book. Suitable for any level.1 hr w/shop Friday

Around the Block Jane Davies Log Cabin and Crazy Patchwork techniques are combined in a contemporary and innovative manner to produce this little block of embroidered patchwork. Neatened strips of colourful fabrics are laid around the central square in a spiral pattern. Simple hand stitches using space dyed threads are used to apply the fabrics and decorate at the same time. The project can be finished off at home with further stitching, beads and sequins, and made into a pincushion, needle case or as the central panel of a cushion. Art Quilt Sampler: Notebook Cover Tamara Schultz, Sweden Students hand quilt together a small ”sandwich” of fabric and batting, adding a small piece of a synthetic tulle or net as they sew. Next students get to try out using a reactive foil with a fusible, melting parts of the synthetic with a heat gun, and then overpainting the quilted piece by rolling on acrylic paint. Braided Spiral Mats from Upcycled FabricsJenni Stuart Anderson Braided (plaited) rag rugs were made in the UK from recycled stockings, or any fabric they could get, during WW2. Both vintage and contemporary braided rugs are highly prized in Canada and America. You can make a braided fabric project which, in one hour, will be table mat size, or it could be extended into a rug, later. This technique shows the surface pattern of the fabrics which are cut into strips, plaited, then stitched and laced into a spiral. You can see other shapes which you could make at home. Decorate a Bag using Vintage Rag RuggingJenni Stuart Anderson Customise a useful bag, using two traditional rag rug techniques. Yarn and fabric strips are hooked in loops on the hessian bag, then surrounded with fabric petals using another technique called Progging. A simple flower motif can be worked in an hour session but you could use your own designs to make unique gifts later. Progging was used for rag rugs in the UK in the past, as was Hooking, which was used for vintage rugs in Canada and the US where it developed into a folk art form. Fabric Decoupage Demystified Sue Cotten In this workshop you will learn how to decoupage with fabric. Folded Log Cabin Block Penny Bicknell Using a square of gingham fabric as a foundation fabric students will attach a red central square to form the “fire” in the middle of the cabin. By adding strips of folded fabrics in dark shades on one side and light shades on the opposite sides we form the log “walls” to the cabin. This is a simple, traditional block that is sewn by hand using a running stitch. Students will complete one block and start a second. Hints for Hookers: Rag Rugging Jenni Stuart Anderson Hooking yarn or thin strips of fabric through backing material is the vintage rag rug technique used for pictures and detailed designs. In America and Canada it frequently depicted scenes of early settlers’ lives and has developed there into a fok art form mostly using yarn for small, fine detailed pictures. In this session you can hook yarn and recycle fabric strips to make a sample, trying different hooks and materials with hessian backing on a small frame. Indian Applique Elephant Jane Davies Learn how to hand appliqué fabrics the Indian way and begin to make this attractive Indian Elephant design. Simple fabric shapes are cut out and applied onto a calico background using the ‘needle turn’ technique. A small hem is turned under to neaten the edge of the fabric and slip stitched in place. Once the elephant has been mastered then start to apply the triangular and straight edge borders. The outer border can be further decorated at home with hand embroidery stitches and sequins. Over time beautiful patterns emerged and stitching became more decorative. Introduction to Stuffed & Corded Quilting Ruth Singer Stuffed & corded quilting or trapunto is a fast, fun technique for creating raised texture on fabric. Unlike traditional quilting, in trapunto the stuffing is added between two stitched layers of fabric just in the areas required. Trapunto can be worked by hand or machine, but in this class we will use simple hand-stitching techniques to create a small sampler using cording and stuffing. Italian Corded Quilting with a Very Modern Twist Janet Goddard Italian - or corded - quilting involves inserting cord or yarn into a design that has stitched double parallel lines. The end result is an attractive raised design. Kantha Stitched Dandelion Mini Chalk Board Angela Daymond In this hand stitching workshop you will combine traditional Kantha stitching and dark fabric to create a beautiful dandelion clock. This will be stitched onto black cotton fabric alongside a rectangle of wipe clean chalkboard fabric, the seam is pre stitched for you. It is easy to write onto the chalkboard using chalk to make a mini notice board. Kantha stitching is based on a running stitch to create representational images and patterns onto three layers of fabric and is extremely relaxing. You will learn about how to mark dark fabrics, how to stitch a running stitch, laced running stitch and background stitching. If you do not manage to complete this in the workshop full instructions are given for you to complete your project at home. This workshop is suitable for all abilities and all resources are provided. Kantha Stitched Flower Garden Angela Daymond Using the traditions of Kantha stitching which is to reuse unloved items and turn them into something beautiful, you will be stitching into a pale green wool blanket which Angela found in a charity shop. You will also use sheer fabrics, most of which have come from unloved scarves. Combining these with perle 12 thread and Angela’s tuition and enthusiasm you will create a beautiful garden of flowers. A variety of running stitches will be used including whipped, laced, aligned and non aligned with perle 8 and 12 thread to create flowers, stems and leaves with texture and dimension. You will also be given beads to further embellish your stitched flowers. You will start your flower garden in the workshop and finish it at home, taking with you stitch diagrams and instructions. Kantha Stitching: The Oh So Easy Running Stitch Sew-Along Angela Daymond In this demonstration you will learn about the traditions of Kantha work and how relaxing it can be today to stitch. Kantha work is over 500 years old and a hand stitching technique. It is based on just a running stitch used to create representational pictures and abstract patterns. Angela will demonstrate just how many beautiful variations of this stitch there are that can be used in Kantha work that also will be suitable for hand quilting. As you come into this demonstration you will be given some fabric and thread so that you can have a go at stitching some of the running stitch variations as you go along (cost £1 to be collected by the tutor on the day). Kupesi: Popular Tapa Art Sulieti Burrows & Tui Gillies, PolynesiaKupesi: This is a powerful and popular form of tapa art. Traditionally, practitioners draw designs on material then stitch on coconut palm leaf midribs tracing the decorations. Then they place the tapa cloth over the kupesi rubbings and rub red dye over the tapa to bring out the embossed designs. Participants in the course will learn about this process and get to try it themselves. This class provides a unique opportunity to learn the secrets of Polynesian tapa art from Tongan master Sulieti Fieme’a Burrows and trailblazer Tui Emma Gillies. They are a mother and daughter team who bring a unique blend of skills and insights into both the traditional and the contemporary South Pacific art form. Painted Fusible Card Holder Tamara Schultz, Sweden In this workshop students first paint fusible web with water and liquid acrylic paints and the fuse this piece to muslin. This base is then further painted with stencils and spray fabric paints. The painted piece is then layered with thin batting and another fabric and then cut and sewn into a shape which folds into a small envelope type card holder. This card holder has 3 pockets of which two are closeable with snaps that we also attach. The pattern can be adjusted in size at home to be used for many other projects. Painted Threads: Colours from NatureAngela Daymond In this fun workshop Angela will teach you how to use fabric paints created from plants to create your own variegated and totally unique threads. Angela has made up the fabric paints from the woad, weld and Madder plants, berries, logwood and onion skins for you to use. You will paint a hank of stranded embroidery thread and 12 perle cotton in many different colours so that you take home a rainbow of threads. The beauty of using paints based on plant dyes is that you will have colours that all go together. You will pick up lots of tips and techniques about how to wash and dry your threads at home. Penny Rugs Jane Davies Relive the bygone craft of Penny Rugs and begin to make a decorative mug mat. This thrift craft originated in the USA during the 19th century - using cast off or small pieces of woollen fabric. Coins were used as templates for the concentric circles which were stitched onto a background and used as bed and table covers, as well as small mats. Bring the idea up to date, during this workshop, with space dyed threads and subtle hues of wool felt circles on a black felt background fabric, to produce a charming testimony to times gone by. Simple stitches such as Blanket stitch, Lazy Daisy and French knots can be used to decorate and apply the fabrics. All instructions and stitch diagrams will be provided on the day. Somerset Patchwork: The Square VersionLouise Mabbs Traditional Somerset Patchwork starts with small squares of fabric folded into triangles, which are sewn in concentric rings and get increasingly complicated with each round. My alternative version uses a different starting fold and a square based grid instead, so is much easier and opens up all sorts of new possibilities. The kit will contain backing fabric and enough precut squares to make a 6” (15cm) block plus grids and instructions and the use of threads during class. Tapa Painting Sulieti Burrows & Tui Gillies, PolynesiaTongan tapa art has developed from a series of symbols centred around the royal family to a broader means of expression that reflects the lives of ordinary Tongans. Tui fuses the traditional with the contemporary and is considered one of the best tapa artists in the world. Participants in this workshop will learn about all aspects of tapa painting and will be able to paint the tapa cloths which contain their kupesi rubbings or come up with something completely new. This class provides a unique opportunity to learn the secrets of Polynesian tapa art from Tongan master Sulieti Fieme’a Burrows and trailblazer Tui Emma Gillies. They are a mother and daughter team who bring a unique blend of skills and insights into both the traditional and the contemporary South Pacific art form. Thread Catcher Penny Bicknell Students will use fabric to cover a cardboard circle base and ring. Using a basic running stitch we then sew a cylinder into which the shapes will fit. The fabric is sewn on to the base, securing the circle inside. The finished result is a fabric pot in which to store your snippets of thread whilst at a workshop. The pot twists into itself to form a small circle to take with you. This project should be completed in this class. Traditional Boutis Flower Mick Stead Boutis is an old traditional French type of patchwork. In this workshop, we will be using the traditional method of sewing the pattern onto fine Cotton Lawn then stuffing with Boutis Cotton using a lasso. The pattern will be a simple flower that is ready for stitching. This is all done in hand stitching and you may not complete the project within the hour but everything you need to complete this piece is in the pack. Triangles Modern Quilt Eleanor Marsden On Eleanor’s workshop you will design and make an A4 sized modern quilt with a triangle theme. Turned Edge Applique by Machine Dawn Cameron Dick This is an easy, fun technique that will allow you to produce lovely appliqué, without bonding web or satin stitch. Your appliqué will look completely hand done! There are no special tools needed.... just things you probably already have in your sewing kit. Dawn will show you how to set up your sewing machine, turn seam allowances under with ease and then stitch the applique by machine. She will also bring many quilts to show the amazing ways to use this technique. You can even use it to mitre your borders, put together Hexagons and applique bias stems. You will be amazed! Wonderful Wool Felt Applique Gai Taylor, Australia Wool Felt Appliqué is a mixture of traditional and modern methods of appliqué. Using the pattern supplied, you will cut out the different shapes from the 100% wool felt, and add embellishment using Perle 8 cotton. These shapes are then appliquéd in multi layers onto a background layer, using a variety of embroidery stitches. These stitches will be demonstrated and taught in class. Colourful combinations of felt and threads mixed with some simple embroidery makes for an impressive project. In the class you should finish appliquéing the shapes onto the Needlecase and commence the embellishing. The pattern and instructions provided allow you to complete the project at home.
