Portugal is a country located in Southwestern Europe, on the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal has border with Spain on the north side and the east side and with the Atlantic Ocean on the west side and the south side.

Portugal is officially called the Portugese Republic. It is a democratic republic with President of the Republic whom currently is Anibal Cavaca Silva

Portugal In Portugal live 10 millions people. The most important cities are Lisbon, Porto, Veiro and Braga.

Lisbon Nation's capital since 1255,

is one of the oldest cities in

Europe.

Today it has more than 2

million people who make it the

largest city in the country

and the 11th European

agglomeration.

The city is situated on the

north bank of the Tagus

River, just before it opens

into the Atlantic.

The city is accessible via two bridges:

-the 25th of April Bridge

-and the Vasco da Gama

How to get to Lisbon

Lisbon Airport is seven kilometers northeast of the Portuguese capital. It is connected with centre of Lisbon via red subway line.

A lot of airlines supports flights Lisbon-Poland.

Lisbon

History of the city is dominated by the discoveries of maritime explorers:• Henry the Navigator,• Bartolomeu Dias,• Vasco da Gama• and Ferdinand Magellan.

and by an earthquake from 1st November 1755.

Just after that tradegy the city was flooded by the tsunami and 'dry' districts were burned.

Nowadays, city is full of contrasts: white facades decorate with blue tiles azulejos, narrow streets and

small squares full of colorful cafes.

The nicest way to see the city is by tram which is an integral part of Lisbon. The most popular is tram

number 28 which is climbing through the oldest districts of the city.

Alfama is the oldest working class district. It’s located on the east of the town centre In winding streets you can have a ride by tram and in the evening you can listen to fado in cafeterias.

The Baixa is elegant district constructed entirely after earthquake.

It’s the heart of Lisbon and the biggest shopping centre in the city.

Rua Augusta (August’s street) is the most common promenade of Lisbon.

Rossio is the historical name of Don Pedro IV square(Praça de D. Pedro IV) – the most important square of Lisbon. For centuries played out here the most important events: celebrations, revolts, executions. Nowadays it’s the most important place in the city.

The Chiado is located between Bairro Alto and Baixo. It is a traditional shopping area of the capital. Lisboners as well as tourists come here not only to buy books and clothes but also to have a cup of coffee in trendy cafes.

At the western end of the city is placed district call Belem.

In time of Great Discovers, from this place cavarales had been flown.

The most famous monuments are fortificated lighthouse

and The Hieronymites Monastery

Padrão dos Descobrimentos (lit. Monument to the Discoveries) is a monument on the northern bank of the Tagus River estuary, in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém. Located along the river where ships departed to explore and trade with India and Orient, the monument celebrates the Portuguese Age of Exploration during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Cuisine

The biggest influence on Lisbon’s cuisine have the Ocean.

One of local delights are Cod fritters - pataniscas de bacalhau

Another speciality of Lisbon's cuisine is peixihos da horta. These are slices of bean deep fried with some flour and water.

In districts placed on the south, delicacy are grilled sardines.

A pastel de nata is a Portuguese egg tart pastry. It is believed that pastéis de nata were created before the 18th century by Catholic monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém: for this reason, they are alternately known as Pastéis de Belém.

Transport

As of 2012, the four Lisbon subway lines total 45.5 kilometres (28.3 mi) in length and comprise 55 stations.

In capital city there are 5 tram lines.

Elétrico – how it’s call here – in center of Lisbon is still traditional mean of transport.

Accommodation in Lisbonne

Lisbon is still one of the cheapest cities in which one we can find a good hotels with low prices.

Climate

Lisbon has a Subtropical-Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm to hot summers.  Winter snowfall is infrequent, but some snow showers occurred in 1993, 1994, 2006 and 2007.

Shopping

Shopping in the city centre is certainly a pleasurable experience. There’s plenty of variety and quality, and you can find everything you need. 

Chiado is an elegant shopping and residential district.  It still maintains all of its former charm and offers visitors a wide range of different shops.

The district of Baixa / Rua Augusta is one of the busiest areas.
