It is not everyone, however, who has this knowledge. Since some have become so accustomed to idols until now, they still think of the food they eat as food offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. "Food will not bring us close to God." We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if others see you, who possess knowledge, eating in the temple of an idol, might they not, since their conscience is weak, be encouraged to the point of eating food sacrificed to idols? So by your knowledge those weak believers for whom Christ died are destroyed. But when you thus sin against members of your family, and wound their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of their falling, I will never eat meat, so that I may not cause one of them to fall. Leader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Reading & Proclaiming God’s Word

NEW TESTAMENT EPISTLE LESSON Sue Sawyer

1 Corinthians 8:1-13: Now concerning food sacrificed to idols: we

know that "all of us possess knowledge." Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. Anyone who claims to know something does not yet have the necessary knowledge; but anyone who loves God is known by him. Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that "no idol in the world really exists," and that "there is no God but one."

Indeed, even though there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth--as in fact there are many gods and many lords--yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.

People: Thanks be to God!

*THE GOSPEL LESSON Dr. Rodney Kennedy

Leader: The Gospel of the Lord according to John. People: Praise be to you, O Christ.

John 13:31-35: When he had gone out, Jesus said, ‘Now the Son of

Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Iglesia Bautista Dios Compasivo (El Salvador)

Why do we read the gospel from the aisle?

This was the practice of the Western Church in ancient times, from at least the fourth century onward. The gospel has a special status because in it are recorded the very words of Jesus himself. Placing its reading at the center of our worship reflects this authority—it makes it clear the gospel stands at the very center of the Church’s faith and life. First Baptist has an inter-denominational foundation: this is one way we draw on all the riches of the Church’s liturgical heritage to enhance our encounter with the living God.

BYF Super Bowl XLIX Party!!!

Tonight (Feb. 1) beginning at 6PM, Rod and Johnelle Kennedy will host a Super Bowl party for our Baptist Youth Fellowship (BYF) group. Their home is located in Performance Place above the Schuster Center (109 N. Main Street, #1602, Dayton 45402). We’ll meet in the lobby at 5:45pm. There will be food and snacks on-hand as we hangout and watch the football game (and the commercials). If you have any questions, please contact Rev. Alspaugh.

Super Bowl Sunday at the Jackson’s Home

The Fun, Friendship and Fellowship group is meeting at Jim and Kathy Jackson’s house to fellowship and watch the Super Bowl. Here is the current plan (and it looks like the weather is going to cooperate). We will meet tonight (Feb. 1) around 6:30pm at 6131 Noranda Drive, Dayton 45415. Since not everyone loves to sit glued to the TV, we are also having a game room and a food room set up. So bring your game face, a dish to share, and your favorite game and let’s spend an evening together. Just give the Jacksons a heads up, if possible, so they can get a count. Call Jim at (937) 371-7584 or Kathy at (937) 684-1108, or email [email protected] at your earliest convenience.
