Bazzo mugs apologetically just as STEWART KENSINGTON enters.

    COLLETTE

    Good morning, Mr. Kensington.

KENSINGTONWarren, the Miami stations beencomplaining up the line about itsarms shipments coming up short.

BAZZOHe still a contract agent for SDECE?

    (pronounced suh-DEK)

LATHAMYes, but mostly French Intelligencejust debriefs him nowadays.

COLLETTENow its your turn. He wants tomeet you for lunch. Sounded urgent.

LATHAMAlright, set it up. Meanwhile, letssee if we can help the Miami station

recoup some of its missing rifles.

    BAZZO(watching TV)

No hay problema para la revolucin.

INSERT: On TV, chillingly graphic images of a La Guardafiring squad; Che firing his pistol at the prisoners, andlater smiling and charming a group of reporters.

LATHAMAnd whos supposed to take the fallfor this? The Russians?

    MOREAU

Well, thats not for me to say, nowis it?

LATHAMNo. What about Fidel? He and Cheare pretty tight, you know.

MOREAUHell be devastated; so much so Raulbelieves hell be a non factor.

LATHAMI dont know. This sort of thing

can go very wrong. For one thing, how do I know Raul will keep hisword? He can say anything he wantsto now, but after Ches gone...

MOREAUHes always kept his word with me.

LATHAMYouve got nothing at stake here.

    MOREAUNo? Im sitting here delivering

this message to the head of CIAsDomestic Operations Division. Thatalone makes me a marked man. Look,Im not advocating a thing here,Warren, but Rauls only here toSunday. So if you are going to act, youll need to act now.

LATHAMCant. For something like this, Idhave to get Division approval first.

    BERARDIts very short notice, Warren.

    LATHAMToo short for me, sir.

    KENSINGTONCould be a perfect opportunity.

LATHAMTo do what? Go in, guns blazing? Allhelld break loose. Besides, who thehell knows what Rauls really up to.

KENSINGTONTheres a Communist regime in therenow. Killing QUACK would seriouslyweaken them in the West.

LATHAMAll Latin America would see is us,meddling in Cubas internal affairs.

KENSINGTONSo we rock the banana boat. So what?Raul doesnt want Cuba to be aRussian satellite. What other excusedo we need? One less scruffy Marxist.

BERARDBut Rauls hardly distanced himselffrom the Soviets lately, Stewart.

    KENSINGTON

How can he? One wrong move and hecould end up on the wrong side of aRevolutionary Tribunal himself.

LATHAMAnd our people right along with him.

EXT. AT SEA OFF BARLOVENTO, CUBA - NIGHT

The Cuban Coast Guard nears a boatload of anxious Cuban

Chinese attempting to flee the island. A floodlight shines onthem as the CUBAN CAPTAIN speaks through a bull horn.

    COLLETTEThe Intelligence Chief is here.

    (Nealy enters)

    LATHAM

    Thanks for stopping by, Bill.

Collette closes the door behind BILL NEALY, who sits.

NEALYI read your brief on Che. Risky.

LATHAMSo what can you tell me aboutRauls relationship with him?

NEALYRaul revered him when they fought

together in the Sierra Maestras. But Che saved his admiration forFidel, even when El Jefe behavedmore like a bourgeois leftist thana militant guerilla, speaking atcolleges and whatnot.

LATHAMTrying to win the hearts and mindsof a few coeds, no doubt.

NEALYWish Id thought of that. Anyway,

until recently Raul and Che hadbeen creating an intelligenceservice with help from the KGB. Butthen Raul objected to Russiasmeddling in Cubas internalaffairs. Within a few days, Fidelhad taken Rauls place.

LATHAMSo you think Rauls offer is legit?

    NEALY

Yes. Hes been adamant about Cubaremaining independent of Moscow, and a lot of Latin America iswaiting to see what happens. Ithink you can view Raulsconspicuous absence from La Cabanaprison as both a rebuke of MotherRussia and a way of distancinghimself from Che.

Something smells worse than thatdog mess youre about to step into.

Latham jumps awkwardly to avoid stepping in dog feces.

    LATHAMSo? Weve done business before.

JONESDoes that include games of one-

    upmanship?

Latham has some doubts now. Jones changes the subject.

JONES (CONT'D)Anyway, I asked you here to tell youthat the Hong Kong station reportedthat a Russian research ship, theKharkov, is being held at Shenzhen.

JONES (CONT'D)Seems the Peoples Militia claimthe Russians hadnt gotten priorapproval to restock the ship there.

    LATHAMThat true?

JONESNo. Weve long suspected she was

really a spy ship; apparently, sohave the Chinese. They boarded herwith guns drawn, ostensibly toremove a few too many egg rolls. But what they were really doing wassending Mother Russia a message:Youre no longer welcome here.
