Technologies and dialogue events for smart cities

Metropolitan Solutions 2014 puts decision-makers from the realms of government, administration and policymaking in touch with major urban infrastructure suppliers. Together they use the fair as an international discus-

sion and information platform about technologies and services for cities. They discuss innova-tive concepts and current technologies for sustainable urban development, as well as best practice examples.

Buildings are an important factor in this urban development. Building sustainable cities requires new solutions for true energy performance and environmental quality. That’s why we support the europe-wide online contest powered by Construction21, where exemplary buildings with innovative solutions to meet energy efficiency and environmental quality challenges are highlighted.

It’s a fact, energy transition is at the agenda. Throughout Europe and around the world, governments, actors of the economy and simple citizens are already considering the transition as an urgent necessity. However it should go beyond just energy. Comfort, health, biodiversity, water, carbon emissions are equally important factors.

Designing and building while taking account of those multiple factors push the construction forward, encourage architects, engineers, contractors, industrials to innovate for a better future and as environmentally friendly as possible.

The Green Building Solutions Awards exist to bring those innovators under the spotlights and reward their approaches, their inventiveness and flexibility. By promoting their buildings and their solutions, Construction21 wishes to inspire all actors of sustainable construction to allow the dissemination of best practices, new techniques, systems and materials.

Metropolitan Solutions, the place where innovation prevails, hosts this year’s edition of our European contest. We couldn’t have wished for a better place to announce the winners.

The Contest: Key Figures

The CandidatesThe Green Building Solutions Awards aim to promote and reward innovation in sustainable construction. The contest proposed 4 categories:• Efficient Building,• Energy Efficiency Management,• Materials and Building Systems,• Innovative Processes.Various actors participated: architects, contractors, real estate companies, thermal consultancy agencies, and even industrials. They submitted all kind of buildings and original solutions.

The FinalistsThe online vote on Construction21 platforms drew a lot of attention on the candidates, giving a whole new visibility to their buildings and their solutions. The two week-long first round of votes generated a huge audience on Construction21 platforms:• 27,500 visits• 84,000 views

The Winners4 experts in green buildings determined the winner for each category. In addition, a second round of online votes took place on Construction21 platforms for an internet users special award.

• L’Ensoleillée is the first tertiary park built with timber structure positive energy buildings in France.

• The project received the Gold level for BDM label (Mediterranean Sustainable Building Label).

• Ywood is selected for the “100 exemplary buildings in Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur” by French national agency for energy, the Ademe.

• Its innovative solution is based on the timber building system Binderholz BBS, an adaptable and concurrent concept allowing quick construction and reducing by 50% the carbon imprint of the building.

The European platform for green building practitioners

Construction21 is a collaborative platform dedicated to all professionals active in the sustainable building sector. You can exchange information and feedback, develop your network and engage in the thematic communities. Access to the website is totally free and content is created by users and moderated by recognized experts.

The project has been launched with the support of European Union and is now developed by renowned organizations and multiple partners in each country to ensure its independence, the quality of its content and adaptation to national markets.

Construction21 has developed an original approach, combining local to global. Construction21 is first considered as a national portal, where users share information and experiences with their peers, in their language. Construction21 is also an international on line network, offering to professionals an access to innovations issued from the whole Europe.

In 2012 Construction21 launched six national platforms in France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Romania and Spain. They are linked together via a central platform in English connected to Build Up, the European Commission website dedicated to Energy efficiency in buildings.
