KENNY WASHINGTON STADIUM FOUNDATION

Welcome to Kenny Washington Memorial Game III!

Our yearly game experience has taken on a life of it’s own. It is truly a labor of love by the Foundation Board and we hope that you enjoy tonight’s history making game.

In a few weeks, the KWSF will formally announce it’s plans for our Centennial Gift to Lincoln High School. In this our 100th year, we felt it was important to leave behind a legacy offering for the next 100 years of Lincoln students and alumni. We’ll be looking for 100 proud alums of the school to get on-board with what we believe will be a very memorable project. Look for this upcoming special announcement on our web site and on our Facebook page on November 1st.

One of the challenges that an organization like ours faces constantly are the hurdles to making a difference many try to put in front of you. But instead of dousing our enthusiasm, these challenges have only made us more determined than ever. I can assure you that the KWSF is firm and resolute in our mission. We’re not an organization interested in “good enough”. We are an organization seeking to have state-of-the-art facilities here at Lincoln High School because our students and our community deserve no less.

Our sponsors play a huge part in all that we do. From our earliest supporters like East West Bank to our newest friends including the YNOT Foundation and Paramount Pictures, we are fortunate to have their faith in our vision for a better day on this “Enchanted Hillside”. Many thanks go out to each and every one of them.

The Board would like to profoundly thank our local elected representatives who have supported our efforts to make a difference: State Senator Kevin de Leon, Assembly Member Jimmy Gomez and Councilman Gilbert Cedillo. We’re confident their collective leadership will yield many great things in the future - for the Kenny Washington Stadium project and for our Lincoln Heights community. We enthusiastically look forward to working with each of them closely in the years ahead.

Finally, we would like to thank those who have once again made our throwback experience at the annual Kenny Washington Memorial Game something very special for our varsity athletes. Others may follow our lead, but we were the first. On the field tonight, the Tigers and Mules are making history by being a part of the first ever all-throwback game in Los Angeles Prep Sports history. All of the donors on both sides of the field should be commended for their generosity and support of high school sports.

Until we see you next year at Kenny Washington Memorial Game IV. Go Tigers!!

Yours for Lincoln,

The 1985 Northern League Champion Tigers brought back respectability to Lincoln Football. During that championship season if there was one game that changed the fortunes of Tiger football for generations to come, it was their second game of the season against Wilson High School.

For the previous 18 seasons in a row, the Mules had defeated the Tigers on the gridiron - a streak that at its lowest point included a controversial 63-0 halftime exit by an undermanned and overmatched Tiger squad. From that darkest day in Tiger football history in 1977, came a movement in the community to create and fund a Pop Warner league. Some of the earliest participants of the new youth football program in Lincoln Heights were neighborhood kids who would later become members of the 1985 Tigers.

Captained by Willie Flores, Pablo Cano and Steve Silva, the 1985 Tigers of second year head coach Randy Rodriguez would go on to be one of the best defensive units ever - leading the entire 2A Division in fewest points allowed. All Northern League selected Tigers that year included Willie Flores, Peter Yoo, Sergio Rodriguez, Hector Ramirez, Jesus ‘Chuy’ Padilla, Steve Silva, Pablo Cano, Gus Hernandez, Jesse Godinez, Gus Vargas, and Ramiro Garcia. Cano and Silva would share the Northern League Player of the Year award.

Although the Tigers had beaten Cathedral 10-3 in the first game of the season. It was not until their second game against Wilson where the team found it’s identity and swagger. Their 20-0 victory over the Mules solidfied the team personality they were to be remembered by: a hard hitting, relentless, and confident group of young men who proudly wore “Lincoln” across their jerseys.

At Kenny Washington Memorial Game III we welcome home these Lincoln Tigers from the past who paved the way for the many successful teams that followed. If there was ever a Tiger team who grew up together and became brothers on Lincoln High’s Andrus Field, this was that team.

To the 1985 Tigers, tonight we honor your “Tiger Tuff” spirit.

Kenny Washington Stadium Foundation,Thank you for making a difference.
