At the last Yakima Association of Churches and Faith Communities (YACFC) meeting, our check-in reflection was: In this harvest time, share an idea, plan or project that is now coming into fruition for you or your community. What would you have shared?
I shared about the Connection Groups we are forming here at Unity to discuss the Interfaith Amigos book, Finding Peace through Spiritual Practice. Then I invited our Association to consider having its own discussion group with the book. A number of people were intrigued. So the Association agreed to purchase books for all their
participants. Over the next several months we will begin each meeting by discussing or practicing one of the spiritual practices from the book. Then in January, several leaders plan to come together for a discussion group. There was also discussion about having some kind of interfaith youth gathering. Doesnt that sound cool? I am excited to see seeds of greater interfaith understanding continuing to be planted in Yakima.
October is a good time for reflection and imagining at Unity. Not only will we begin our Connection Groups, but we will all come together on the third Sunday for our Annual Meeting the 85th! Did you know Unity has been in Yakima that long? We started out as a Metaphysical study group in the early 1930s, and here we are shining the light of Love and Understanding in Yakima 85 years later! Five hundred years ago this month, Martin Luther nailed 95 Theses to the door of a Roman Catholic Cathedral and the Protestant Reformation began. Lets create our own list of 85 Ways that Unity Spiritual Life Center Makes a Difference in Yakima. Well do it together as we share a soup supper, silent auction, and business meeting on Sunday, October 15 5:00 7:30 pm. Members and friends of Unity are all welcome. Sign up, please, so we can be sure to have food for everyone.
Speaking of making a difference, we are still reaping the benefits of so many of you stepping up to help bring our Center into financial balance. When you paid off a bill for us, when you gave a special catch-up gift, when you continued to give a little more each month, when you offered to pay a particular monthly expense for a year all these responses have been a blessing to us. Thank you! Let us affirm with one another that in this coming year all our financial obligations are met with ease and joy, giving us so much more energy to focus on transforming lives through spiritual growth. It can happen when we all set that intention and allow ourselves to be channels of Divine Good. Thank you, God! And it is so!
In these beautiful October days,
as you walk in the brisk autumn air,
work at the fair,
or sit in a circle to share,
remember that the One Presence and Power of God is always there.
And all is well!
Peace, Cheryl

October is such a beautiful time of turning for us. Summer has turned to autumn, showing off its brilliance in the turning colors of the landscape of our Valley. Unity has turned from blessing people on their summer adventures to welcoming everyone back into the fall activities of our lively community: Connection Groups, Fall Clean-Up Day, the Annual Meeting with Silent Auction and Soup Supper, and as always, gathering each week for our Sunday celebration. After Lucinda kicks off the month with some beautiful Aloha energy, October (and November), our Sunday services will focus on themes from our Connection Groups book, Finding Peace through Spiritual Practice. How does Unitys approach fit with our neighbors from other spiritual traditions? Come join us for this intriguing series.
October 1 Secrets of Aloha Guest Speaker: Lucinda Cervantes After living on the Main Island, Hawaii for a year and a half, Lucinda is ready to tell Tales of the Night Rainbow and other
stories. She will answer questions like Am I your Auntie? Who is the Big Kahuna? What is your amakua? What is Pele up to? Why is the sand green? Is time vertical?. She will also share about the high cost of
living cheap in Paradise.
October 8 Close Encounters of the Spiritual Kind Having begun our journey with the Interfaith Amigos to find peace through spiritual practice, we realize right away that we
are not as far apart in our different faith traditions as we might have thought. Each calls us to a deeper listening for the Divine at the heart of all things all things human and all of creation. The ancient Benedictines were on to something when
they invited people to listen to the heart of God. Are we listening?
October 15 Living in a Wholly, Holy Way When Unity is living into its name, we begin to see God in everything: in the light and the shadow, in the stranger, and even in our own selves. Its all holy. Its all part of the Infinite Wholeness we call God. When we practice living into this reality,
we begin to see holiness all around and within us. We begin to live peace, shalom, wholeness.
October 22 When Darkness Threatens, Seek the Light Sometimes the complexity and enormity of the dangers we see in our world threaten to overwhelm us and send us into
despair. Our spiritual practices can move us from giving up or giving in to giving our fears over to the infinite Presence and Power of God the Good. This is the good kind of surrender, the kind that makes room in our consciousness for the Light
which is greater than all darkness. In that Light, we find our way forward. Then, wonder of wonders, we become light along the way for others.
October 29 Transforming the Power of Our Anger When passion burns within us for another person or for justice in our world it holds a similar two-sidedness as the
Chinese symbol for crisis: the possibility for danger or opportunity. Anger unchecked or coming primarily from our egos can do major damage, burning bridges wherever it pops out. Anger pointed within can also do damage, leaving us burned out.
But anger transformed by Divine Love becomes like a burning bush in the desert an invitation to step out in faith and action in service to others.
