A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR, FR. JOHN McCARTHY
Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy Family, Greetings and Peace of the Lord be with you! As we continue our Lenten pilgrimage together in faith we reflect today on the events leading to our Lord’s transfiguration. Accompanied by three of His closest companions, Jesus retired up the mountain to seek the guidance of God the Father in the quietness of prayer. As He conversed with His Father, Jesus seemed to be fully taken up into another world. His face was bathed in light, and at His side were Moses the great law-giver and Elijah the prophet of old. Deep in conversation with them, Jesus was made fully aware of the extent of His suffering and death. It was only through the passion and cross that He would come to the glory of the Resurrection. The purpose of the transfiguration on the mountain was to make the Apostles keenly aware of the divine presence in the man with whom they traveled, as well as to establish beyond all doubt in their minds and hearts that Jesus truly was (and is) the Son of God. It gave the Apostles a taste of future glory and prepared them for the humiliation of the passion. When they first cast their lot to follow Jesus, little did Peter, James, John and the others fully realize the price they would be asked to pay on the journey ahead and the huge sacrifices it would entail. The transfiguration speaks of the gradual process of change that takes place in our lives when, like the Apostles, we accompany Christ on the road to Calvary. We become so taken up with everyday concerns of living that we often lose sight of the end to which we have been called. At times we are dragged down with feelings of failure and worthlessness, but then suddenly a piece of good news, a spark of joy, hope or love changes our outlook and we see our lives in a total new and brighter light. The Holy Season of Lent affords us an opportunity, through prayer, fasting, almsgiving and penance, for putting the house of our souls in spiritual shape. Moreover, it teaches us that the road to Heaven is through the many challenges and struggles we face in life each day. By rooting out prejudice, selfishness, and hatred we are better able to meet all people with love, understanding and compassion. The Gospel tells us that a close relationship with Jesus Christ can improve us, and make a dramatic difference in our lives and in our world. The transfiguration is about letting the glory of God shine in and through us so that all the people around us can catch a glimpse of that glory too. As we journey together up the mountain toward the cross during this season of grace, let us pray earnestly for one another for strength and courage. Indeed the Church is a “House of prayer for all peoples of all nations.” Let us continually pray for peace in our world, and especially for the people of the Ukraine who are suffering terribly with war and violence. May God watch over them and protect them from danger. With my sincere prayers for a blessed Lenten Season, I remain truly yours in Christ, Father John McCarthy

March 13: Second Sunday of Lent
Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are
poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell.
They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell. Is there a family you know who needs assistance?
Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the poor, the suffering,
and the deprived.

Christ repeated the words, “Peace be with you.”
But then he added, “Receive the holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them”
Jn 20:19-23.
God’s Giftof Forgiveness
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:“Peace be with you!” With these words, the Risen Lord greeted his frightened Apostles in the Upper Room on the day of his Resurrection. They were troubled, anxious, and fearful—much like each one of us at some point in our lives. Christ repeated the words, “Peace be with you.” But then he added, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them” (Jn 20:19-23).
What an extraordinary gift! The Risen Lord was proclaiming that all the suffering he had just endured was in order to make available the gifts of salvation and forgiveness. He wanted the Apostles to receive these gifts. He wanted them to become apostles of this forgiveness to others.
In the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, also called confession, we meet the Lord, who wants to grant forgiveness and the grace to live a renewed life in him. In this sacrament, he prepares us to receive him free from serious sin, with a lively faith, earnest hope, and sacri- cial love in the Eucharist. The Church sees confession as so important that she requires that every Catholic go at least once a year.1 The Church also encourages fre-quent confession in order to grow closer to Christ Jesus and his Body, the Church. By the grace of the Holy Spirit, we seek forgiveness and repentance, let go of patterns
of sin, grow in the life of virtue, and witness to a joyful conver-sion. Since the graces of the sac-rament are so similar to the pur-pose of the New Evangelization, Pope Benedict XVI has said, “The New Evangelization . . . begins in the confessional!”2
We bishops and priests are eager to help you if you experience dif culty, hesitation, or uncer-tainty about approaching the Lord in this sacrament. If you have not received this healing sacrament in a long time, we are ready to
welcome you. We, whom Christ has ordained to min-ister this forgiveness in his name, are also approach-ing this sacrament, as both penitents and ministers, throughout our lives and at this special moment of grace during Lent. We want to offer ourselves to you as forgiven sinners seeking to serve in the Lord’s name.
During Lent—in addition to the various peniten-tial services during which individual confession takes place—we bishops and priests will be making ourselves available often for the individual celebration of this sacrament. We pray that through the work of the Holy Spirit, all Catholics—clergy and laity—will respond to the call of the New Evangelization to encounter Christ in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Come to the Lord and experience the extraordinary grace of his forgiveness!

WASHINGTON - Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued a statement on Ukraine:
"On behalf of my brother bishops, I echo the Holy Father’s call for prayer and fasting to end the war in Ukraine. In
times of trouble, we call on the tender mercy of God … to guide our feet to the way of peace (Lk 1:78-79). May
our prayers, joined with those of people around the world, help guide those waging war to end the meaningless suffering and restore peace.

Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting. We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ's will more faithfully. We recall the waters of baptism in which we were also baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.
Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self-discipline and fast in other ways through-out the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God's gifts—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446).
In Lent, the baptized are called to renew their bap-tismal commitment as others prepare to be baptized through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a period of learning and discernment for individuals who have declared their desire to become Catholics.
