*A bulge was discovered in the southern retaining wall of the Temple Mount, threatening to collapse a large section of the wall. Some Israeli archaeologists claimed it was due to the excavation of a new mosque in the area of Solomon’s Stables. Rainwater became diverted into spaces in the construction loosening stones in the wall. Other archaeologists said the bulge existed before work began and refl ects the weakness in the centuries-old wall. The repair work is visible today as lighter and smoother patches near the upper corner of the southern wall and near the southern end of the eastern wall.
