Let any of the board members or other Club member know if we can help. In the vein of helping, I am so proud of the volunteer activities we have been participating in as a Club and individually as well. I know of lots of facemasks being made and many volunteer hours to various organizations. We are continuing to volunteer as a Club at the Northern Illinois Food Bank on Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m., if you would like to join us, please let me know. We do have a lot of fun. See the story about our work if you had not seen some the fun dialogue on Groupme. I am also glad that we are moving forward in starting to make plans for trips next year. Here’s hoping that travel is reasonable at that time. Make sure you look further in the newsletter for a new trip announcements. Finally we are going to try and have a virtual meeting. I figured our last guest would be a great way to start (Oh, yeah, it happens to be about beer). So I will be filming Steve Neuman at his brewery, Brother Chimp Brewery (and might even have a sample or two). He will give us an overview of his beers, the different types and how to make beer. You may want to pick up some samples prior to the meeting so you can also join in on the sampling. See the article later in the newsletter, and I also look forward to your suggestions for other possible meeting topics for June. Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks to all for your help in keeping the Club communicating with each other. The Groupme app seems to have added another nice way to stay in touch. Be healthy and safe. I would suggest downloading the app on your phone or iPad prior to the meeting to test it if you have not used it before. Also you can view it on a computer and it is suggested that you have a camera and speakers on the computer or you can call in from the computer using your phone. The meeting will be all about my friend Steve Neuman's brewery, Brother Chimp in North Aurora, that opened right as the pandemic started. Take a look at his web-site, https://brotherchimpbrewing.com, and/or call ahead for curbside pickup 630.800.1724 so that you can sample during the meeting while we discuss the beers. The brewery is open Monday -Thursday 3-7:00 p.m., Friday - Saturday 12-8:00 p.m. and Sunday 1 - 5:00 p.m. It is located in the strip mall at the corner of Randall and Orchard Road in North Aurora. If you order pizza or carryout from Raimondo’s, they will deliver Brother Chimp’s beer along with the food.

Treasurer’s Report

GOOD NEWS! Both the Whitefish, Montana, and Telluride, Colorado, ski trips had a budget surplus even after all the fun social events at the mountains. The following trip credits have been established for each trip. Your actual credit depends on your specific trip registration and payment with those paying the full trip price receiving a credit a little above average and those with lower trip payments being below the average.

Page 4: The Flakey News - Wild Apricot...Daniel Carl “Dan” Brauer Daniel Carl “Dan” Brauer, age 80, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Saturday, April 18, 2020. He was born

• Whitefish, Montana – average trip credit = $29

• Telluride, Colorado – average trip credit = $12

Your trip credits can be applied towards membership payments, future ski trips or events, or a cash refund.

Stay safe and be well.

historian I have not sent anything to the newspapers since the photos of our donations. If anyone has seen the photos I would appreciate hearing about it. The Hesed House photo was in the Kendall papers, but they did not include the added ski club information or contact numbers. I am also hoping to get some photos of ski club activities that I did not attend. Please email them to me. Thanks.

GroupMe is a free group messaging app that the Telluride trip used to stay in touch. It is a simple way to stay in touch with Snowdrifters – on a trip, for basic information, meeting places or just to stay in touch! This can be a quicker way to stay in contact. It's like a private chat room for small groups. Once you download the app you can use it in your personal life, too – just make a group and add your contacts. Have as many as you want, and it's always free.

We want every Snowdrifter to download the app. We will add your number to the Snowdrifter’s GroupMe and send out a test message.

GroupMe works on Windows, iOS, Android, and the web, so you can stay in touch on the go. You can download the GroupMe app from the App Store, Play Store and Windows Phone Store. If you’re on a desktop, you can use the web version of GroupMe instead. Once you download the app set up GroupMe:

1. Enter your Facebook details, Microsoft Account, Google Account or email address, and then tap Continue.

2. Enter your name, set an avatar (profile photo) and create a password. 3. Check the box to indicate that you agree to the Terms of Service. 4. Check the box if you want to sync your contacts to GroupMe, then tap Continue. 5. Enter your phone number and then tap Get PIN. We will send you a text message (SMS)

containing a PIN. 6. Enter the PIN we sent to your phone into the app and tap Continue. We will take you

through a brief tutorial to get you started.

If you have any questions email me or send me a text!

Keep calm and carry on

Snowdrifter’s 2021 Ski Season trips

During the current environment, ski trip scheduling and proposals have been very different than previous years. Ski resorts and airlines have been slow in providing final trip contractual terms. In addition to our Chile trip in September, we have been working on destination trips for January, February, and March. We also have discussed having two bus trips that we will schedule once our destination trips are finalized. Trips that are in the planning stage are:

January 2021

• Bus trip – Date TBD

• Schweitzer Mountain – January 23rd – 28th (We are in the process of

finalizing details on this trip.)

Schweitzer is a burgeoning destination ski resort in Idaho. Ski Magazine has voted Schweitzer Ski Resort as “the best kept secret in North America.” The Schweitzer ski terrain has lots of variety including wide open cruisers, steep corduroy, open bowls, glades, some really impressive tree skiing, and three terrain parks. The trail statistics are 20% beginner, 40% intermediate, 35% advanced and 5% expert, and the double blacks aren’t the pretend kind! Schweitzer Mountain has a summit elevation of 6,400 feet with a vertical drop of 2,440 feet. There are 92 named runs and open bowls on Schweitzer's skiable area

of 2,900 acres and the average annual snowfall is over 300 inches. The longest continuous groomed run is Little Blue Ridge Run, at 2.1 miles and the uphill lift capacity is 15,900 passengers per hour. Accommodations will be at the ski in/out Selkirk Lodge on the mountain. At the Lodge, you can enjoy a drink at the bar/lounge and take a dip in an outdoor pool. All 82 rooms offer comforts like memory foam beds and premium bedding, plus free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs with cable channels.

February 2021

• Bus trip – Date TBD

• Canadian Trip – Date and Location – TBD We are looking into a five-day trip to a few Alberta Canada ski resorts and are waiting for proposals.

March 2021

• Paganella /Verona Italy – March 7th – 17th The Italy trip is in the early investigation stage and is dependent on health and trip cancellation considerations. We are requesting a proposal since we were offered valuable ski resort pricing and have Verona credits from our 2020 trip cancellations. If the Italy trip is not doable, we will investigate other trip destination options.

September 2021

• PORTILLO, CHILE - Late summer 2021 - $3,150 per person Package Includes: Airfare to and from Santiago and transportation to Hotel Portillo at the Portillo Ski Area for 4 nights. Over the past 60 years, Portillo has earned a reputation as an excellent destination for skiers and snowboarders from all over the world. The snow quality in Portillo is excellent and is often likened to that of the Rocky Mountains. Skiers of all skill levels find what they are looking for on a mountain and come back year after year. Here is a general breakdown of the terrain: Beginner -15%, Intermediate – 30%, Advanced – 30%, Expert – 25%. The ski area features 1,235 acres of ski-able terrain, 14 lifts and 35 runs. Beginner and intermediate runs are groomed nightly, off-piste runs are challenging and steep, and the powder is often deep. The bowls and shoots perfectly collect the light, dry snow and the above-tree-line landscape turns into a white playground. Pair this with frequently sunny, blue skies and it is easy to understand why many guests, even professional skiers, say they’ve had some of their best ski days at Portillo. Rate includes: Full Board, Lift tickets daily Hyatt Centric 3 nights - Santiago Hyatt Centric Las Condes is one of the 5-star hotels in Santiago, Chile, located in the modern district of Las Condes. Snowdrifters Making a Difference

in our Communities For those of us who are fortunate enough to endure this pandemic with minimal effect, please consider supporting those who are less fortunate. Donate to a food bank, give blood, support the caregivers and the local police and fire departments, and thank them for their services. Donate Time

I would like to encourage any Club member who is not high risk and would like to volunteer to consider helping the Northern Illinois Food Bank. I have currently reserved 12 spaces for us to help every Wednesday from 9 a.m.-12:00 p.m. The location is 273 Dearborn Court, Geneva. Much of the donated food Northern Illinois Food Bank

distributes needs to be inspected, sorted and packaged before it’s distributed to our hungry neighbors. We simply could not do this without the help of volunteers. Last year volunteers donated more than 136,000 hours of their time, the equivalent of 65 full-time employees. Currently there are less volunteers than normal due to social distancing but the needs are as great as ever. Please consider volunteering and if you are interested, I need a count by Monday afternoon. Please email me at [email protected].

Northern Illinois Food Bank – a proud member of Feeding America – is the source of nutritious food, innovative feeding programs, and hope for more than half a million people each year. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a goal of solving hunger in our 13-county service area, we rely on our generous donors, volunteers, and community partners – the local food pantries and feeding programs, food manufacturers and retailers, companies, foundations and individuals who join with us in our vision for no one to be hungry in Northern Illinois. For more information https://solvehungertoday.org

Volunteers are needed to deliver meals to Meals on Wheels clients in Kane and DuPage counties. Please note, meals must be delivered inside the home. Meals may not be left on doorsteps. Healthy people only, please, as we are working with an extremely vulnerable population and will be entering homes and apartments.

• Volunteers must have their own car • Volunteers must be healthy

• Volunteers must be able to pick-up prepared meals in Elgin or Lombard

• Volunteers must have dedicated 4 hour time slots available to do deliveries

• Up to 2 people may deliver together • Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes WILL NOT be provided

(Meals on Wheels does not have enough supply) • Please bring your own hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes • Volunteers must be comfortable entering homes to deliver food • $20 gas cards are available (email [email protected]

for details on cards) Please call 630-746-0909 or email [email protected] or info@dupages

Donate Skills There is a local family that started an effort to organize those who can sew to make cotton face masks. These are not a substitute for sterile N95 masks. But they are a way to provide our healthcare workers who are desperate for PPEs to have some protection. The pattern is simple. Here is a look at some made by a Snowdrifter:

Follow this link for further information: http://www.americanstrongmasks.com//post/looking-for-volunteers/ Here is a link to a video from CBS2 on the group: https://chicago.cbslocal.com/video/4493315-american-strong-masks-sewists-step-in-to-help-health-care-worker-amid-coronavirus-pandemic/

Northern Illinois Food Bank 135 volunteer hours and counting

For the last five weeks the Snowdrifters have been volunteering at the Northern Illinois Food Bank (“NIFB”) on Wednesday mornings. We have done a little of everything. The first week we started with bundling folded boxes in counts of 30. At the end of our three hour shift we had 720 bundles stacked on 10 pallets. The following week we cleaned vegetable cans, relabeled them and stacked them in case boxes. Our group cased enough beans and corn vegetables for that week’s assembly line. The next three weeks, since our numbers were growing, we filled boxes in an assembly line. For each of those three weeks, we packed 11,250 pounds of food providing 9,375

meals for hungry neighbors in Northern Illinois. Week 1 – The Start. The first week after we had loaded eight pallets with 30 pack bundles of boxes that night I was trying to sleep but instead of counting sheep I found myself counting 30 boxes. Just think of counting to thirty hundreds of times.

Page 11: The Flakey News - Wild Apricot...Daniel Carl “Dan” Brauer Daniel Carl “Dan” Brauer, age 80, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Saturday, April 18, 2020. He was born

11

Week 2 - Holy Cans Batman! The following week we had a larger group so we were on can duty. There were can washers, relabelers and packers (not the cheese head type of packers - thank goodness). I thought everything went really well until I got home and the GroupMe texts started to fly. Come to find out that Nancy is quite the trash talker (that girl has spunk!) and she ripped me a new one. “We labeled canned corn and green beans. After the first hour, Joe was starting to get the hang of it and was able to keep up with me.” But then Michelle rips on Peggy ”I don’t want to be with Peggy. She is too perfect at putting the label on! Slap the label on and let’s go!!” And so the fun trash talkin’ began. Week 3 - Production Line 450. For the following weeks we were in the assembly lines and, of course, afterward Nancy couldn’t help herself and had another post. “Joe did much better today. He learned to take boxes from the seniors to keep up in our line.” Now even Peggy chirps in “Eileen and I kept pushing him to keep up.”

Week 4 – Don’t Drop the Cans! The fourth week I thought – sugar! I have to take the first shot so I posted “Today we did the same amount as last week - 450 cases. A few notes. Eileen reminds me of Lucile Ball on the chocolate candy line. Eileen kept dropping the cans and was having a hard time keeping up with the fast pace I was setting. Then at the end of the production line I had to jump in and help Michelle since she had the line backed up as well.” And now the text messages really started to fly. Week 5 – They Shushed Us. Well all things must come to an end. We now have a Foodbank Volunteers GroupMe for the group to trash talk. If you enjoyed the bantering, you can join our group for another form of entertainment.

The time volunteering at the “NIFB” has been very gratifying as well as a fun short get together for a great cause. It is a great feeling knowing that the Snowdrifters are making a difference in this time of need.

Paramount Theatre Ushers: The Secret Symbol of Our Success

You see them at every show. You maybe know their names. But I’d like you to think of them as the face of the Paramount Theatre. I’m talking about our ushers, of course. I’m talking about Joan McEachern, a Paramount volunteer for 28 years. I’m talking about Linda Coakes, who ushered more than 100 times last year (despite her knee replacement!). I’m talking about more than 250 teachers, managers, laborers, nurses, waiters, salespeople and retirees who filled vital behind-the-scenes, labor-of-love roles for us last year.

Page 12: The Flakey News - Wild Apricot...Daniel Carl “Dan” Brauer Daniel Carl “Dan” Brauer, age 80, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Saturday, April 18, 2020. He was born

12

Okay, but...really? Should ushers be the face of our theater? Wouldn’t some beloved performer or brilliant director be a better choice? Or a high-flying sponsor or prominent board member? Not when you stop and think about how Paramount defines success. Sure, every theater loves great reviews and black ink. But the number one metric on our dashboard is our impact on our community. We come to work every day not just to create great art, but to create great art that fills our community with people who are more enlightened, more connected, more sensitive to the human condition. In other words, our real aim is to shape the kind of community that people want to give back to. And that’s why our legion of selfless volunteers and generous donors is our best possible symbol of success. They pitch in not just because they love theater, but because – like Paramount -- they’re community-builders. Diverse as they are, they all tend to call Paramount their “second home.” We’re deeply honored by that. And so, during this strangest of National Volunteer Weeks – when our volunteers can’t actually join us at the theater – we at Paramount are more determined than ever to tell them, “Welcome home.” Sincerely, Tim Rater President and CEO
