As the Florida 4-H year wraps up, 4-H members look back on their accomplishments from this year, and the accomplishments of 4-Hers in the past 100 years. The kick off of our Centen-nial Celebration began in February of 2009 when 4-H hosted a mini putt putt golf tournament at the Florida State Fair. This activity was an awesome way to start off, being able to involve the entire community and State of Florida. In July, 4-H members from across the state came together for Flor-ida 4-H Congress, held at the University of Florida. While there, 4-H members participated in planting 100 trees, and 4-H members all contributed items to be placed in our Centennial Time Cap-sule, to be opened and discovered one day by our future 4-H members and leaders. 4-H members had the opportu-nity to “view through the years” what 4-H members wore when they partici-pated in their events. In August, 4-H was awarded a centennial marker, that can be viewed on the campus, and it was placed next to the centennial tree, and time capsule.

State 4-H officers, along with Congress-man Boyd had the honors of revealing this prestigious maker, which is the 6th and final maker UF has put up. In November, the first ever Flor-ida 4-H Promotional video came out and can be viewed on the state website. On November 7th 4-H partnered with the University of Florida‟s College of Agriculture and Life Science to hold the 13th annual Tail Gator, which gave 4-H the opportunity to promote, with the theme “Gators and 4-H: A Florida Tra-dition.” On November 14th, State Offi-cers Sean Russell, and Candice Drake, participated in the Florida 4-H Centen-nial Gala which was held in Jacksonville Florida. They had the privilege to meet and greet many Florida 4-H alumni, whose lives have been touched by the amazing 4-H program. The finial Cele-bration came on November 21st when 4-H was showcased at the UF/FIU foot-ball game, and was televised on T.V. Thank-You so much to UF for their continued support to the Florida 4-H Program. Happy 100th Birthday Florida 4-H...Happy Birthday!

Since September 1st, it has been exciting to see 4-H members across Florida

working hard to, “Make the Best, Better” as they continue to celebrate the Florida 4-H Centennial and plan for the next century of the Florida 4-H Program. It has been an honor to work with dedicated 4-H youth and adults during the first few months of this year. On September 11th-13th 4-H members representing youth from districts one through thirteen, met at Camp Cherry Lake for 1st Executive Board. The theme for the weekend was Florida 4-H: Mission Possible! At this event participants were challenged to “Accept the Mission” of building the future of Florida 4-H. To help start the year off well, the State Council Officers unveiled the 2009-2010 Florida 4-H State Council Plan of Work. With many ambitious goals set for the new year, the Executive Board team stepped up to the plate and began the hard work to put the plan in action. First Executive Board also gave the State Officers a chance to un-veil the new qualifications for the 2009-2010 Florida 4-H Spirit Stick and Change Wars Competitions and empha-size the importance of participation in the upcoming National 4-H Week and National 4-H Youth Science Day. In addition to all their hard work, Executive Board members also took some time to enjoy their Mission Training by participating in an exciting array of activities that ranged from a cardboard box boat race in the pouring rain, to a “disguise your self with shaving cream” competition. During the week of October 4-11th, Florida 4-H members joined the 6 million nationwide 4-H members in celebration of National 4-H Week, as they showcased the accomplishments of this incredible organization. Florida 4-Hers also invited hundreds of 4-Hers across the country, to join them in wearing green on Monday, October 5th, to kickoff this exciting week. As part of National 4-H Week, youth members also promoted 4-H‟s Science, Engi-neering, and Technology mission, by participating in the National 4-H Youth Science Experiment – Biofuel Blast. As part of this initiative, State Council Reporter, Jared Padgett and I worked with G-Wiz, a hands-on science mu-seum, located in Sarasota County, to host an interactive display where museum goers could perform the experiment and learn about 4-H. It was a special week for Florida 4-H, as members in many counties jointly celebrated Na-tional 4-H Week, as well as our 100th anniversary! In an effort to wrap up the year-long Centennial Celebration, Florida 4-H partnered with the University of Florida‟s College of Agriculture and Life Science to host the 13th Annual TailGATOR event on November 7th, the centennial gala November 14th, and on November 21st, when 4-H was showcased at the UF/FIU football game. Now that it‟s time for 2nd Executive Board, I hope all of you are looking forward our upcoming events and programs that will be launched as part of our mission of setting the precedent for the next century of Florida 4-H! In the upcoming months we will continue to work to streamline our communication and event promotion strate-gies, especially through the use of social networking programs and our new 4-H news blog. We will work to pro-mote 4-H through our County Involvement Agent Program. We will also reflect on 100 years of 4-H members making a difference in the lives of others through service projects as we launch our, “A New Century of Citizenship” State Project. I hope to see all of you, and 4-H members from your counties and districts, at Leadership Adventure Weekend, Intermediate State, 3rd Executive Board, and 4-H Day at the Capitol. Thanks for all the hard work you‟ve put in thus far to help us accomplish our goals! I am looking forward to working with each and every one of you as we initiate new opportunities designed to promote 4-H to the public and government officials and create new learning experiences for all 4-H members! The 2010 Florida 4-H State Legislature Planning Commit-tee has been off to a great start this year! Committee mem-bers met for our first meeting of the year at 1st Executive Board, where we outlined our goals for this year‟s event and assigned leadership roles. The committee accepted a highly efficient work schedule, committing to submit at least five bills per person for the draft bill book by December 1st. At second executive board we anticipate prioritizing bills and assigning lobby groups

and pro/con statements. Some of our other goals include: 1.Advertising Legislature attendance through workshops in counties and at

Leadership Adventure Weekend. 2.Creating Committee Background Guides and posting the information

online to enhance attendee participation. 3.Incorporating the theme of “A New Century of Citizenship” by passing a

joint resolution. The level of enthusiasm that has been exhibited by all committee members thus

far is very exciting; I am confident that this year‟s event will be a huge success! For more information on the Florida 4-H State Legislature Event, please feel free to contact the State Council, or visit the Florida 4-H website at www.florida4h,org

With our Centennial Celebration coming to a close it is time to start looking at what's next, A New Century of Citizenship! This state project will focus on bringing com-munity service back into state 4-H events, helping us keep in mind some of the most important aspects of our program, head, heart, health and hands. The State Project Committee will be busy at Second Executive Board creating a guide for our new project. There

will be a detailed explanation of what our project is about as well as several examples and ideas of what you can do to participate. We are also in the process of creating a logo to symbolize A New Century of Citizenship. So all in all, Second Executive Board will be a busy weekend for our committee, but I'm sure we will accomplish a lot as well as having a great time. Katherine Kaltenbach Florida 4-H Secretary-State Project Chair 2009-2010

The Ways and Means Committee has been working hard this year. I am so proud of my committee this year. They're willing to help with whatever is needed. This year we would like every District to raise at least $100 to go towards Change Wars. Another thing that we are working on is the State Yearbook. The Yearbook will be sold in preorders or you will be able to purchase them at Con-gress. If you would like to purchase a yearbook please contact myself. We are also selling Ads for the yearbook we will be selling Commercial Ads and Personal Ads. If you know anyone that would be willing to purchase a

Commercial Ad for the Yearbook please contact me to receive farther information. This yearbook is away to recap the year and it will create memorizes that will last a forever. If you have any questions please contact me at [email protected] . Ashley Avant Florida 4-H Treasurer– Ways and Means Chair 2009-2010

Ways and Means Update

This year the CCS committee has accomplished so much. At 1st Executive Board, we broke out into sub com-mittees to help promote the various activities throughout the year. The sub committees , came up with the idea of creating promotional videos for each of the events, so they can be shown in counties and districts to help enthuse 4-H members about them. We decided, we would assist the committees with flyer designs and other promotional ac-tivities.

CCS Update

Another important activity we accomplished at 1st was the creation ad design of our first ever Florida 4-H Video Blog. Our sub committee did a great job in assisting with the layout and design of it. Our video blog, will now be continually updated, and you can be viewed it at www.florida4hinfourmantnews.blogspot.com. Another great idea, that our committee came up with, is to create promotional resource folders, to be handed out at 3rd Executive Board. The resource folders would include flyers, postcards, calendars with upcoming events, and a CD, that contains promotional videos, power points, and pictures about various state 4-H activities. As always, if you are interested in submitting articles for the InFOURmant, please e-mail them to me at [email protected] Jared Padgett Florida 4-H Reporter– CCS Chair 2009-2010

Congress Update

Hey Florida 4-H, Wow, it seems that time has just flown by since First Execu-tive Board. I am so proud of everything that my Congress Committee accomplished at 1st. We were able to decide on a theme for this year‟s congress, get a general idea of what kind of workshops we would like to have, create a rough draft of the t-shirt design and logo, and are close to finaliz-ing the schedule.

At Second Executive Board I am hoping to decide on a guest speaker for Monday night and Tuesday morning, finalize the t-shirt design and logo, and to finalize the schedule. Rebekah Diaz Florida 4-H Historian- Congress Chair 2009-2010

LAW committee has been working hard to come up with

new ideas to make this years LAW a great event. Since Lead-

ership Adventure Weekend is the first event of the year open

to all senior 4-Hers we will have a lot of information about

the other state events throughout the year to help all the

new senior 4-Hers get involved at the state level. The LAW

committee has decided to go with a colors theme. Leadership

Adventure Weekend is going to be a colorful way to master your leadership skill, make friends, and get more involved at the state level. Parker Hudson Florida 4-H Parliamentarian– LAW Chair 2009-2010

Over the years, thousands of people have attended the Southern Region Teen Leadership Conference and it gets more and more fun every year, but this year was one of the absolute best yet. The event was attended by twenty-six Florida 4-H as well as par-ticipants from over eight other states including: Kentucky, Alabama, Louisi-ana, Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina. With the diverse participation in this event, all of the SRTLC attendees got the opportunity to meet people from all over the country and learn about their states and their 4-H programs. Many different workshops were offered at this year‟s fabulous event, including one that was taught by our own Florida 4-H Presi-dent, Sean Russell, about the „Stow It-Don‟t Throw‟ Project. There were workshops about everything from the inter-workings of the Kentucky 4-H Pro-gram to a photography scavenger hunt through the camp facilities.

Along with the workshops, there were many inter-

esting activities that were available at the 2009

Southern Region Teen Leadership Conference. We

were greeted by a taste of Tennessee presentation

that included a visit from the legendary Elvis Presley,

Ladder Golf or „Hillbilly Golf,‟ and a

sweet, chocolate-caramel treat called a

Goo-Goo. As the football game be-

tween the University of Florida and

Louisiana State University drew near,

the battle between the Florida and

Louisiana delegations got pretty heated. The Gators

prevailed and won the game, but we were all a little

sad to see the playful banter between states end af-

terwards. With all of these fantastic activities taking

place, everyone who attended the event agreed that

this was the absolute best event yet and with Florida

4-H as the host for this upcoming 2010 year‟s

event: The best can only get even better!

“FLIPPIN‟ AMAZING…” was how most of delegates from 44 states and Puerto Rico described National 4-H Congress 2009 in Atlanta Georgia, November 27th-December 1st. From meeting a former 4-H wearing the crown of Miss America 2009-Miss Katie Stam, trying food from all over the world, learning about science experiments, dancing the night away, participating in community service, making new friends from all over the nation, and so much more, the event was nothing less than spectacular! Natalie Hutchinson and Jared Padgett, both had the opportunity to expand their leadership experiences while there.

National 4-H Congress 2009

By: Natalie Hutchinson

Natalie applied and was selected to serve on the youth Leadership Team, and had the opportunity to introduce many interesting speakers and guest, that attended. Jared had the opportunity to plan the event, which he said began back in February. While there he had to honor to be Miss Americas personal escort for the day, and he had to opportu-nity to spend the day with her, and they had a great time talking about the 4-H program, and the Miss America Pageant. The youth listened to and learned from inspirational speakers such as Dan Thurman, Dr.Barbra Chamberlin, Dan Clark-A writer of the “Chicken Soup For The Soul” series, Miss America-Katie Stam, and many others. The youth were also entertained daily by talent from their peers who sang, danced, and played various instruments. There were also dances performed by the Hawaiian delegation and the delegation from Puerto Rico! Classes taken by the delegates included Salsa and Swing dancing, Irish Step dancing, Science experiments, Sto-rytelling, Pilates, Leadership, Bug science, bread making, and many more! On Monday morning 4-H member participated in many community service projects that included cleaning up local parks, assisting elementary schools in the Atlanta area, raking up cemeteries, and many more! Later that afternoon 4-H delegates participated in tours that ranged from riding a bus all over Atlanta and seeing historic sites, going to the Zoo and seeing Pandas, drinking soda at the coke factory, getting a look in to the underwater world of the Atlanta Aquarium, touring the CNN studio, and many other educational and very fun sights! The event is many 4-Hers favorite, by far. So many memories and friends were made, and it is hard to put on paper the “amazingness” of the National 4-H Congress 2009. Everyone needs to apply for the chance to go, and share in this spectacular experience.
