There are many other ways of pncti linathese examples; the teacher ahould not rest content with thosegiven above.When the parts a re read separa te ly, the other portion of the classmust follow and be invited to ' spot I mistakes. Sometimes bothdivi sions of the class should lea rn both l ines.Neither section of the class should be kept permanently to tintor second l ine; one should take the upper In one example and thelower in the next , as the examples are wri tt en fo r equal voices. Theclass should point out all imitations, augmentations, diminutions,etc.A free contnpuntal style has generally been adopted in orderthat the singers may cultivate independence. Except where thetreatment is canonical , the melody should always be s li&htly moreprominent than the descant; there are var ious degrees 01 f, VariOUIdegrees of p, etc. The class should always beat time, or, in suchcasel as slow 6/8, tap each beat silently.It baa not been thought necessary to refrain from including a fewfamiliar tunes, because the descantl will provide material forlight-reading.Nou.-Tbe Editors wish to express their indebtedness to MessnBela Bartok and Karol Hlawiczka for kind permiss ion to use manyfine Hungarian and Polish tunes from their col lect ions.
