Talking Turkey

In many homes Thanksgiving dinner is a really big deal. People travel great distances to be with family and friends. They come to gather around tables weighed down with seemingly unlimited portions of wonderful foods.

Once all the cousins have arrived and the time to enjoy the far too abundant meal has come, all gather and a prayer is offered. Usually that prayer includes thanks to God for all that we have.

Yet, as families have moved geographically farther and farther apart, it has become increasingly difficult for everyone to “gather at Grandma’s” on the Big Turkey Day. As families have moved emotionally farther and farther apart, through divorce, remarriages and different lifestyles, it often seems better to maintain a safe distance from one another.

Thanksgiving Day itself has become a kind of great divide separating our American culture of the “haves” from the “have not’s.”

For the “haves,” Thanksgiving is the starting gun for the first frenetic round of holiday shopping.

For the “have not’s,” Thanksgiving is the first disappointment of the holiday season. One of the most disappointing things about the “have-not” Thanksgiving is there are no leftovers.

There are no leftover goodies to nibble on, no leftover family members to spend the long weekend with, and no leftover feelings of security that Thanksgiving leaves in its wake. Most sadly, there is no leftover sense that they are loved.

Although true, it has become passé to say we should be thankful every day and not just on one special day. It is also true that it is important to offer our thanks to God, but our just saying the words isn’t enough. Our thanksgiving also must take the form of sharing our bountiful blessings with others. We, as followers of Christ, are blessed to be a blessing.

John Wesley, father of The United Methodist Church, put it this way:

Do all the good you can By all the means you can In all the ways you can

In all the places you can To all the people you can As long as ever you can.

LEARNING ABOUT GOD IS FUN!

This year’s Sunday school offerings are different from previous years! As our children grow and change, so must our Sunday School!

Our Pre-K through 3rd grades are using “VeggieTales” as their curriculum and meeting in the Fellowship Hall during Worship at 10:30 am. They have access to our new, really large flat screen television and lots of space to move around!

Our Tweens, grades 4th through 8th, are using Grapple, from Group Publishing, and meet in the Youth Room at 9:30 am. This is an entirely new age grouping for us at Good Shepherd!

We ask that you prayerfully consider leading one or the other of these groups. Sign-up sheets are at the Opportunity Center

FOOD PANTRY NEEDS

canned pasta & soup canned meat (tuna, chicken, pork, beef) canned vegetables & fruit cereal boxed mac ’n’ cheese canned or bottled juice peanut butter & jelly canned spaghetti sauce long shelf-life milk laundry detergent dish detergent shampoo & soap tooth brushes and toothpaste deodorant toilet paper

There is a constant need for the above items, as they are “staples” of our emergency supplies. Monetary donations may also be made, marked “Food Pantry” on the memo line!

MUSIC NOTES Hand Bells will meet after church 12:15 to 1:15 PM on all but the 1st Sunday of the month.

Chancel choir will meet on Wednesdays from 7 PM to 8:30 PM and we are starting to work on the Christmas cantata.

The Itty Bitties, our youngest children, will meet every Saturday morning at 10 AM for only 15 minutes.

PANERA CARES BREAD AUCTION

Our Panera Cares Bread Auctions on the First Sunday of every month have been quite successful!

Over the last three months we have “auctioned” off 21 lovely loaves of day-old bread from Panera Cares. There are a variety of kinds of bread available, and a variety of ministries who receive our donations! We raised $146.47, for three different ministries! November’s designated recipient is our own Food Pantry!

DINNER & A MOVIE ON NOVEMBER 12

Our fall study of John Wesley wraps up with a Dinner & a Movie event on November 12. Join us for a light supper beginning at 5 PM in the Fellowship Hall. The showing of “A Man from Aldersgate” will start at 5:15 PM. The early start time allows for participation in choir at 7 PM.

Roger Nelson portrays John Wesley in this one-man play about the founder of the Methodist Church. Be inspired once again about the man who rode over 250,000 miles to bring spiritual revival to England and America!

WE MADE A DIFFERENCE AT HANDS 4 DETROIT!

Eleven people from Good Shepherd participated at two Hands 4 Detroit locations on October 4—clearing at Rouge Park in the Joy-Southfield neighborhood and painting a southwest

Detroit community center that opened on October 17. This community center will be serving primarily the needs of the Hispanic community with everything from English as a Second Language programs to domestic violence assistance and is affiliated with El Buen Pastor United Methodist Church.

We also delivered a check for the donation that Good Shepherd made towards the Hands 4 Detroit food collection. Our special offering on September 21 will buy 1,277 pounds of food—roughly 2/3 of a ton! That amount will provide over 1,000 meals to those in need.

Plan to join us on October 5, 2015!

CHEERING ABOUT THE “COMING SEASON”

There was much to cheer about at the Good Shepherd Pep Rally on October 15. Thirty-four "Sheps" turned out to celebrate the successes of last season and to look ahead to the next

year of bringing Christ into our community. We were honored to have our District Superintendent, Rev. Melanie Carey, join in the celebration.

The annual Charge Conference took on a festive tone as everyone received blue and white pompoms (matching our shirts.) As part of the evening we conducted the business of the church, including voting on leadership for the coming year and modifying our current single board governance structure.

A video of the 2013-14 "Season" highlighted the many ministries which Good Shepherd supported including Hands4Detroit, Imagine No Malaria, Dearborn Blessings in a Backpack and our Afterschool Youth Club (LOGOS.) Fred Michaelson, our Lay Leader, shared the great news that we are seeing an upwards trend in our worship attendance but also reminded us that the "rules" are changing and we need to respond accordingly.

Coach Doug (aka our pastor) then got the pep rally moving with his spirited talk. He commended the Good Shepherd team for the past wins but asked us to take bigger risks--throwing passes instead of running the ball. He prepared us for the possible interceptions (failures) but encouraged us to keep our eye on the prize--winning disciples for Christ.

Rev. Carey brought us news from the conference and district and thanked us for our faithful support of United Methodist ministries. She recognized that our "per member" support of Imagine No Malaria is one of the highest in the entire state.

We finished up the evening with a rousing cheer followed by a song by Matt Redman, "We Could Change the World." WITH GOD'S HELP, we can indeed change the world!

SAVE THE DATE! February 6, 2015 will be our annual Blessings in a Backpack Spaghetti Dinner. Although your participation is needed every month, we expect this will be our largest dinner of the season. Mark that date and be a part of this fundraiser which provides food to Dearborn students on the weekends.

2015 LEADERSHIP ELECTED AT CHARGE CONFERENCE

We are blessed to have many talented and dedicated servants at Good Shepherd. The following were elected on October 15. Note that there are still a couple of openings. Contact Pastor Doug if you are hearing a call to serve.

In addition to the positions listed below, there are numerous needs for servants to lead or participate in ministry teams throughout the year. With your involvement and with God’s help, we can do the impossible!

CHRISTMAS BASKETS Again this year we will be collecting items to make up a Christmas dinner, as well as a couple of basic staples, to be distributed to families that are registered on the church's food pantry list.

We are currently sizing the need and finalizing our plans. We will be looking for donations of food including turkey, ham, potatoes, stuffing, Jello, green beans, corn, brownie mix, fruit, Bisquick, Jiffy Mix, pancake syrup. We would also like to provide laundry detergent, and toilet tissue.

More details will be coming soon but we will be gathering food from November 9 through December 7. We plan on packing the food boxes on December 14 after worship. You may also make a cash contribution that will be used for $20 gift cards. These will be provided to each family for the purchase of perishable items such as eggs, milk and

bread. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

UNITED METHODIST STUDENT DAY - NOVEMBER 30

Our next Special Sunday offering will be the end of November when we observe United Methodist Student Day.

Right now there are UMC young people—who might not have had the resources to attend a school of their choice, or, for some, any school at all—who’ve been sent by you into the world God loves because of your giving to United Methodist Student Day. When you give generously you are support these students as they prepare for a life that unites faith with knowledge. What no one person or congregation can do alone, we’re doing together.

Nurturing Christian Leaders Like Ricky Blue The son of two addicted parents, Ricky Blue had grown up without much hope for a future. But when Ricky’s church family—Louisiana’s Luling UMC—raised $4000 for Ricky to begin college, hope was born. Then, the Gift of Hope Scholarship, made possible only by your generous giving to United Methodist Student Day, allowed Ricky to continue. Today Ricky is a certified candidate for ministry in the Illinois-Great Rivers Annual Conference.

What no one person can do, we’re doing together!

GOOD SHEPHERD GOES TO THE DOGS AND A

HEDGEHOG (AND THREE TURTLES)

Our first annual Blessing of the Animals on October 11 was a wonderful community outreach opportunity and God certainly provided perfect weather for the day!

The event attracted many dogs as well as turtles and a hedgehog. Check out the photos!

The celebration of animals is part of acknowledging the creative love that God has bestowed on the world. Blessing our animal companions honors how God touches humans through the creatures of God's creation.

The first formal animal blessings were held in Rome in the early 20th century. Since that time churches of many denominations have begun to lift up the special relationship humans have with their animals to recognize them as God's gift through a special blessing.

JOIN US FOR OUR UPCOMING ADVENT STUDY

The four weeks before Christmas is the season of Advent. Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation as we excitedly anticipate God's greatest gift, Jesus Christ. Just as we clean and organize our homes to make ready for a guest, Advent is when we prepare for the coming of our

Savior. In order to be fully prepared to receive this gift, what cobwebs need to be cleared out of the nooks and crannies of our hearts? Are we holding on to hurts or hard feelings?

Come join us for “Forgiveness: Finding Peace Through Letting Go.” This important Advent study, led by Pastor Doug, will help prepare us for an exciting new future walking with Christ into 2015.

The study will be November 19, December 3, 10, and 17 from 5:30 - 6:30 PM in Fellowship Hall. Each week a soup and bread dinner will be available. You are welcome to come early at 5 PM for the meal or simply enjoy it during the class time. On December 17, the study will culminate with a Service of Healing and Reconciliation.
