• Content Area: Science• Grade Level: Third• Summary: The purpose of this instructional PowerPoint is for the

students to understand that animals obtain their food by eating plants and other animals.

• Learning Objective: Given this presentation, the student will be able to identify the answers to given questions with 100% accuracy.

• Content Standard: Standard 3- Flow Matter and Energy• Accomplishments: GLE 0307.3.1 Describe how animals use food

to obtain energy and materials for growth and repair. SPI 0307.3.2 Recognize that animals obtain their food by eating plants and other animals.

Food Chain TermsThe food chain is an extraordinary part of our lives, and we need it to survive. Before learning about the food chain, you must learn the terms used for animals and plants in the food chain. Click on the links below to find the definition of each term. (Take notes because there will be questions later.)•Prey•Predator•Consumer•Producer•Food Chain•Herbivore•Carnivore•Omnivore•Food Web

Food Chain Facts Many processes occur in the food chain. The first process begins with the sun. The links below will bring you to websites that have very important information on the food chain.

•Food chain facts•Parts of the food chain•Food chain and food web facts•Image of a food chain and food web

VideosReading time is over! Now comes the fun part of this presentation. Watch these two videos, food chain video and food chain song. After listening to the song, it will be hard to forget how a food chain works.

Question and Answer Pairs1. Take a minute to come up with one hard

question. 2. Make sure the question is related to this

presentation. 3. Then, find a partner and see if you can stump

him/her.4. Write the question and answer down on a note

card. Turn your note card in at the end of class. (Your question may be on the next test.)

Which animals are affected by an animal becoming extinct?

a. No animals are affected.b. All animals are affected.c. Snakes are affected.d. Plants are affected.

You got it!

When any part of the food chain becomes extinct, it affects the entire food chain. Similar to an actual chain, when a link is broken, the chain no longer works. We can’t survive if the food chain is broken.

What kind of animals only eat plants?

a. Carnivoresb. Herbivoresc. Omnivores

Correct!Herbivores are animals that only eat plants. In a food chain, they are also called primary consumers. This is because they are the first animals to consume food and produce energy in the food chain.

Food Chain ActivitiesJust for fun! Click on the links below to interact with food chain activities.

SummaryThe student should now know:•The terms used for various aspects of the food chain. (prey, predator, consumer, producer, food chain, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, food web)•Each process that occurs in the food chain.•Animals obtain their food by eating plants and other animals. •Energy passes from one animal to another as they eat plants or one another.•Any part of the food chain that becomes extinct affects the entire food chain.
