Our Program 5th Apr. Remember John:- A session where we can remember the music of a very fine musician John Evans, who passed away last year. John used to play with the Dick Williams Six, who have been invited to form the main band for the evening, with Dick Williams tpt. Paul Munnery, Jeff Matthews, Phil Blandford piano, Keith Tolley bass and Mike Pincombe drums. Bob Tunnicliffe, Lynn Saunders Chris Hodgkins and Tim Wacher will also be making an appearance. Tim, Chris and Lynn are coming down from London for the evening. 12th Apr The Wessex New Orleans Band. 1st time visit this year, for the Band with John Minnion, John Scantlebury, Pete Locke, Sarah Thatcher, Pete Berry and Clarence Nugent on drums 19th Apr. Moonshine Boulevard. Return visit for the Band with Tudor Thomas, Ron King, Jeff Matthews, Peter Berry, Keith Hall and Mike Pearce. They were very enjoyable when we heard them in January. Come along if you missed them. 26th Apr Dave Smith Quartet. Phil Wall, Steve Davis and Eddie Edwards join Dave for an evening of New Orleans Jazz. Eddie played for us back in January and you’re in for a treat if you missed him. 3rd May Phil Walls’ Jazz Cardinals. Phil with his distinctive sound teams up with Paul Munnery, Phil Blandford, Sarah Thatcher and Steve Davis 10th May Preservation Rhythm Kings. Phil Wall’s season at Café Jazz ends tonight, and is joined by John Minnion, Pete Locke, Roy Davies, Mike Gale and Clarence Nugent. 17th May John Scantleburys’ New Orleans Hot Potatoes. John is joined by Paul Munnery, Sarah Thatcher and Spike Kennedy. New Orleans Jazz at its best. 24th May The New Georgia Jazz Band. Dave Smith and the boys from the Midlands are back again with Dave Smith, Ian Woods, Stan Stephens, Ian Dalzeal, Ian Johnson and Alan Jones 31st May Donnie Joes’ American Swing. Tamasin Readon -Sax. Ashley John Long -Double Bass. Heulwen Thomas -Violin. Greg Evans-Drums. Gareth Hall-Piano and Donnie on Guitar.

John Evans 1934 - 2015

John was born July 21st 1934 in Cardiff. He started playing clarinet at 15. His friends would come round to practice and when their neighbour Mr Rogers couldn't take any more he would tap on the living room window and that was the sign to stop.

John Evans John Evans and Lynn John Evans Saunders. In 1952 he did his National Service in the RAF, playing in the Fighter Command Band. After completing his National Service John went to the Guild Hall School of Music and after that he stayed in London and worked as a professional musician. John worked with many bands including Freddy Randell, Mick Mulligan and George Melly, Lynn Saunders as well as backing top-line cabaret entertainers such as Clinton Ford. John also played drums and sax.

In 1957 he met Jean and they lived in a flat in Earls Court which they shared with Ray Warleigh. Jean and John were married in 1961. Sian was born in 1964 and Jemma in 1967 To support his new family he became an English Lecturer at Southgate College, forming a band there called The Complete Works. He taught there for the next 18 years continuing as a semi- professional musician. After he took early retirement in the mid 80's he worked full time as a musician working with Trevor Anthony, on drums, the Bob Guthrie Band, the JCM Band, Gentle Jazz and Harlem Airshaft with Mike Nash, Chris Hodgkins and Max Brittan. John was also a member of the Anglo Welsh Stompers and the Dick Williams Six.
