We are very fortunate to have Char and Angela and they are looking forward to their grand opening and to serving the Club and its members for a long time. The best way we can thank them for taking on our restaurant is by patronizing their business early and often. On other fronts, I would like to thank Brian Knoll and Tony Haslam for their efforts in resolving our past tax issues, and hope we will soon be able to finalise our future assessment issues – “soon” being a relative term. As a final note, we are looking forward to the newly constituted Planning Committee. These members will be tasked with long-term planning for the Club, to include future needed projects, costing, financing (internal and external), and prioritizing future implementation. Then the Club members, as a whole can make well informed decisions. If done right, we will have a blueprint to move our Club into the future. Here’s to “low water”, favourable winds, and a fabulous summer. Have a great launch!

MASTHEADThe

Commodore’s OutlookGeorge Vasil, Commodore

Winter is passing and spring will soon be upon us. I know this because all the “snow birds” have returned from winter nesting grounds in Florida, in their brightly coloured plumage and straw covered heads – yeah, I know, I’m jealous – I do plan on joining them next year.

But the best is yet to come. On the first decently warm day, we flock to our boats and we commence the boat preparation dance. First we take off the covers. Then we bring out the soap and water, and brush the boats clean. This is followed by the wax and buff. It is at this point we get to stand back and admire the glare coming off the hull. And finally, some of us will paint the keels to make sure our vessels will sleekly slice through the waves.

Yes, the big day is coming! But first, let me tell what I learned this winter. I learned first-hand what it means to be a member of this great Club. I had a first row seat to watch our Vice Commodore, Maurine Seguin, and her House Committee team at work organizing, contracting and supervising the kitchen reno-vation. Jim Taylor, walking around with his tool box, Jim Faught, John Garwood and Jamie Shipley made a very impressive team. They rolled up their collective sleeves and worked non-stop to get this job done – and what a job they did, dealing with some surprise electrical and water damage issues both in the kitchen and the bar areas which needed to be brought up to code, as well as draught lines which were in need of replacement. On behalf of the Club I want to thank them for a great job done.

And, if that wasn’t enough for our Vice, Babu, our long term concessionaire, decided not to renew his contract. He explained to Maurine and me that, despite enjoying his time at the Club and the friends he had made, he was tired and wanted to try his hand at something else. We will miss him and his crew, and, on behalf of the Club, I want to thank him for his years of great service.

Once again Vice stepped into action with her concessionaire search team – Kate Pilling, Jason Taylor, Jackie Pittman, Bob Dallas, Jim Kambourakis and Lydia Allaire. They have done a thorough job of investigating all the applicants. Thanks to all of them. I have suggested a cot for Vice in the Sailors Lounge.

The work and hours these members put in to make the heart of our Club even better has shown me what we can do when they work together. This is the “stuff” all your Board is made of, and why I am so proud to work with them.

The search team chose 2 Blondes Catering, and we are exceedingly pleased to welcome Char and Angela and their crew to our Club. The start-up has been problematic due to various issues and these have been dealt with, and will be explained to all senior members in a flash email within the next 2 weeks.

We are now open for business! We are so excited to be your new concessionaires and look forward to making your club life a joyous experience. Two Blondes Catering & Events @ CBYC consists of Charyn Ryder and Angela MacKenzie Wood. Along with an incredible serving team, we hope to make your visits to CBYC pleasurable and memorable every time.

Charyn Ryder, a familiar face and former employee of the CBYC restaurant, has been in the hospitality industry for over 25 years. Starting out at her father’s knee, she helped build their family restaurant business in Nanaimo, British Columbia and went on to build restaurant and pub businesses in Toronto.

Angela MacKenzie Wood, a George Brown Culinary graduate (Dean’s Honour Role), brings a unique chef’s knowledge and a passion for food with her to CBYC. For 10 years, Angela has been creating, planning, and executing tempting menus that generate a positive culinary experience for intimate gatherings and large- scale events. Angela, a native Scarbirian, grew up cooking with her mom and her favourite toy, an Easy Bake Oven.

You will see a new menu with healthy choices and options… and guess what, gluten-free? Not an problem. If you or your guests have any special dietary needs, please come and speak with us and we would be happy to work with and accommodate you.

In addition to our regular menu, there will be a Friday special menu for you to enjoy. If you have sailed into the sunset hours, no worries! Join us later in the evening for a snack off our 2B@CBYC Late Nite Menu.

Have a special day or event to celebrate? Two Blondes Catering & Events @ CBYC would be happy to work out a theme, plan a menu, and create an experience in keeping with your ideas, your vision, and your budget. We look forward to helping you celebrate those special occasions with your family, friends, and guests.

Going for an early sail? Planning to be on the water all day but don’t have time (or the inclination) to stock your galley? Once again we are here to serve you. Let us prepare a 2B@CBYC Boating Picnic Basket for you and your crew. Please contact us the evening before and we will have a hearty meal ready for your launch.

We are so happy and delighted to announce we are now open. Two Blondes Catering & Events @ CBYC have these extended spring/summer/fall hours:

Monday 11 am –10 pmTuesday 11 am –10 pmWednesday 11 am – after raceThursday –Saturday 7 am –11 pm (or later)Sunday 7 am – 9 pm

We will soon be operating with a fully functioning kitchen, but for now, we have a great mini menu for you to enjoy. And, we’ll be telling you about a Loyalty Program to accumulate 2B@CBYC points. This is just one more way for us to say thank you for your support.

These are just a few of our ideas at launch. We welcome your input and feedback as we get our sea legs, so to speak. Here’s to new beginnings!!! Let’s set sail!

Sincerely,

Charyn and Angela

The Vice’s ReviewMaurine Seguin, Vice Commodore

In January we begun the arduous task of upgrading the kitchen. We did our best to keep members informed of our pace, but sometimes even good intentions are just that, intentions. Gossip can be a nasty thing and it’s been brought to my attention that some members really do not know who I am. Some believe that I am a puppet for others to manipulate, and yet others I am told, believe me to be a tyrant set on hurting others success. I am here to set the record straight. Like the other 200 members here, I am an active senior member. I volunteer my time so that others can benefit in our club has to offer. I give freely and accept the mistakes that I make. I like to lead in the style of Servant Leadership, bringing the best out in others.

A little bit about me and my professional life. After years of working in the Assessment and Tax Industry I changed career paths of crunching numbers and reviewing assessed values to working with individuals and coaching them to their excellence. In 2000 I joined a bou-tique consulting firm specializing in Leadership Coaching, I joined the partnership and worked as the Managing Partner until 2010. In 2007 I received a nomination from RBC Canadian Woman Entrepreneur Awards for the work I did in building the business. Almost 10 years later I formally left the partnership so that I could focus more on my family. Today I continue to work freelance with the same firm I helped create.

Moving from Me to WeIn 5 weeks the House Committee has achieved something that has never been done before in the history of CBYC. A commercial kitchen is now in place. Did it go smoothly? Not always. Were there surprises? Absolutely. Were they insur-mountable? Nothing is in surmountable with the right attitude. We now have a kitchen that is set up for ease of flow.

But it is not just the kitchen that we have invested in. Because we are always thinking ahead, we put in a new electrical panel for future growth, we adjusted the layout of the bar area for easy flow when serving customers. New beer taps were installed with new clean lines as well as a new soda system. Questions have already come in, was all that necessary? Simple answer, yes it was – for the health of all members it was necessary to update the system.

This project took hours away from our families, friends and even our work schedules. From emails, text messages to phone calls while some were trying to take a breather in a much warmer climate. I could not have tackled this without the strength of the House Committee. Jim Taylor cracked the whip when necessary, while Jim Faught, John Garwood and Jamie Shipley balanced it out with their calmness and perspective of clarity. As a member, I wouldn’t have wanted anyone else leading the charge. Together they got the job done in a timely fashion. I will forever be grateful that they agreed to stay on this project with me.

More ChangesIn the first few weeks of January, I was disappointed to receive Babu’s resignation. He has become a staple at our club, providing food services for almost a decade. Babu will be missed, no doubt.

While the House Committee was dealing with Contractors, Electricians and Plumbers I set upon beginning the process of looking for a new Concessionaire. As Vice Commodore I immedi-ately pulled in assistance from representatives of the Concessionaire Liaison Committee as well as the membership at large. I believe that newer members have something valid to offer, but also wanted to keep in mind the members who have come before who have created the club that we have all chosen to join and participate in.

Thanks to Jason Taylor and Kate Pilling for their keen eye to detail while reviewing the contract. Thanks to Jackie Pittman for her amazing research skills, posting the RFP and weeding out potential participants. Thanks to Bob Dallas, interviewer extraordinaire. Finally, to the observers of the group (Jim Kambourakis, Lydia Allaire and George Vasil) who willingly gave of their time to sit and listen to the potential Concessionaire candidates and offering their perspective following each interview.

The committee narrowed the search from four viable candidates to two finalists. After final details were completed (referrals, credit checks and deposits received), 2 Blondes Catering were chosen and we are exceedingly happy to have them aboard.

In closing, I want to share with you that when my husband and I joined CBYC we were greeted warmly by the then Membership Director. She welcomed us and said, “Welcome to Your Club” I have never forgotten that, and I hope that you won’t either. This is Your Club, let’s put some life back into it.

Planning CommitteeAs per Bylaw 15.1 the above is a standing com-mittee , however in reality it has been dormant for a number of years. This was not due to neglect but rather that the club had many projects under way and the additional planning items were get-ting side-lined for want of capital or volunteers.

The Commodore agrees with me that there is now a need to resurrect the committee with its primary responsibility being one of reviewing all plans, identify associated costs and establish priorities.

We advertised for prospective committee mem-bers and have received tremendous interest representative of all segments of the club.

Plans are that the committee will be in place and ready to operate by the end of March.

Members should look for regular updates of the committee activity and conclusions.

Bus Service to Bluffers ParkParks have advised that they are in discussions with TTC for the provision of bus service into the park. Initial plans are for it to start at Kennedy Station where there will be free parking and then

service all stops on Brimley Road before entering the park. There will be east and westbound stops at the start of the east beach road where the new gate is located and another stop just inside the east parking lot where it will loop through the lot and proceed westbound. We will keep members advised as these plans become reality.

Bluffers Park access passes.Last year the City of Toronto initiated a pilot project for park access by Federation yacht club members on busy weekends. Each member of the Bluffers Park yacht clubs received Vehicle Access (Blue) passes for themselves, family and friends.

Lessons learned from the pilot project are now being reviewed by the City, Parks and Federation representatives.

The Federation has suggested that club members continue to use the blue 2017 passes rather than having to go through the time and effort to issue a new pass for 2018. It appears that this is acceptable by the City. Accordingly CBYC members are advised that until further notice they should continue to use the 2017 passes.

Construction ReportRandy Turner, Construction Director

The Boating season at CYBC is finally about to get underway. Mother Nature has been a tough master this winter and there are still a few projects that require participation and assistance in getting done. The installation of the new safety ladder frames and new ladders, being just two.

With spring comes the ongoing work around the grounds with the yard and gardens require cleaning and grooming. Our landscape chair Sue Tulk will be looking for volunteers again and your participation is greatly appreciated. I also want to also thank everyone who steps up and assists with the clean up of the docks, parking lots and grounds.

I want to give a big shout out to my Construction/Bubbling crews for their cooperation and participation which is greatly appreciated.

Remember to keep looking on the Job’s Postings, both on the board in the clubhouse and on our website to insure you get all your hours in.

• If you plan to remove anti-fouling paint or have an outside contractor do the work, the club requires procedures to be followed as outlined in Rule 17.3 (i) You need to place a tarp on the ground and also surround the boat so that the paint does not travel to adjacent boats or onto the soil. Please review and follow this rule.

• Please be respectful to your immediate neighbors when sanding, power washing, painting etc. to ensure that you don’t end up inadvertently damaging their boats or mess up their hard work.

• Check that all thru hulls and hoses are secure and that all bilge plugs are replaced and secure.

• If you know your engine is not going to start, please inform your water crew in advance that towing will be required. A heads up will help our work progress smoother.

CommunicationsStewart Young, Acting Communications

I understand that the communications director seldom makes a personal contribution to the Masthead but this has been an interesting year (so far) at CBYC. I have taken over as interim communications director from George Ververidis, who is remaining on the committee but isn’t able to stay on as the board member. We are looking at making some changes to our web site to make it more relevant for members. At the moment everyone uses the same username and password to access the Members Only part but that only accesses the Calendar. We are considering upgrading this by allowing everyone to create their own login and password and starting to increase the information available in the Members Only section such as listing all members and their contact info. We are also looking to add a Buy and Sell section. I would appreciate any feedback on these initiatives as well as suggestions to make the web site even more current for all of us.

Happy Sailing.

The Rear ViewKate Pilling, [email protected]

Greetings all! As some of you may know, this is not my first time serving on the Board at CBYC, however this is my first time in the position of Club Secretary. I know I have big shoes to fill, following Maurine Seguin as she moved on to Vice Commodore. Thank you, Maurine, for passing over the information and Secretary timeline to make my job easier.

One of my accountabilities is recording the minutes of each Board meeting. As soon as possible following a board meeting, the minutes are prepared and sent to the Commodore and board members for review. They are edited as required, motioned and approved at the next board meeting, then sent to the Communications Director for posting on our website. If you are looking for the minutes of any Board meeting, you can find them on our website under the Members area.

Another one of my accountabilities is the Bylaws and Rules Committee (affectionately known as the BRA Committee). We review and revise Rules as directed by the Board. Bylaws are only allowed to be changed by a Membership vote at a general meeting. The club Mission Statement, Bylaws and Rules are located on our website under the Member’s area labeled Members Information Manuals. Please be sure to reference this area should you have any questions regarding these documents.

I wish you all a happy spring and safe launch!

Well, it’s about time, the snow has almost left us, the ice has melted and we are all ready to start prepping our vessel’s for another season.

Safety: Annual maintenance was performed over the winter and all systems have been certified including all fire extinguishers (several were replaced) and work was completed to facilitate the kitchen renovations. Defibrillator signs have been placed in the club house, defibrillators are located by the exit door in the sailors lounge and upstairs by the Bar, (clearly marked). Additionally a Trauma “First aid” box is located in the sailor’s lounge this is in addition to the smaller first aid boxes located in the office, bar area and lower shed.

Please use caution when working on or accessing your vessel, where ever possible the ladder should be tied off and vessels must be unplugged when you leave the club. As per our by-laws no vessel is to be left “plugged in” overnight while on hard. Please use caution while driving in the lot as there is a lot of activity around the vessels and parked cars.

Security: Please note that the combination for the washrooms and Sailors lounge WILL be changed after launch; a FLASH email will be sent out to all members (with the code) prior to the change.

Launch: As in previous years, please remember to discard oil and anti-freeze in the designated contain-ers. There is a fine to be paid if we mix hazardous

wastes. Do not discard anti-freeze directly onto the club grounds or in the water during launch (we check all boats). Antifouling paint dust is extremely harm-ful to health if inhaled so please take the necessary measures to safeguard your health and that of our members. The hazardous waste area is not a dumping ground, please take your old batteries and propane tanks with you for proper disposal.

Garbage Bins: Our garbage bins are not for disposal of residential waste; please do not use our facilities for your household residential garbage.

Launch Crews: During Launch, there is lot of move-ment of boats, cranes and members. While working on a crew your undivided attention is critical. Please do not use cellular phones during this activity.

Lastly, make sure you remove any loose items that may have been stored over the winter (Bikes, rafts etc). Please re-read our by-laws out lining the rules related to launch.

General: Please note that OD program ends June 1st, for the members that have missed their obligation (I know who you are), there are a lot of small and big projects on the go within our club, please make up those hours by participating and remember to record and submit the hours.

Thanks you and see you all soon.
