When water gets very cold, it
freezes and turns from a liquid into a solid. Snow is rain that has
frozen before it reaches the
ground.

When the temperature is freezing, icicles can form. Icicles
are when dripping water freezes
before it can drop to the ground.

Ponds, lakes and rivers can freeze over in winter. Sometimes, the ice is thick enough to walk on but you must never walk on frozen water unless you have been told it is safe. The ice can
crack and you will fall into the freezing water.

By winter, most trees have bare branches because all the leaves have died and
fallen to the ground.
Some trees are evergreen trees which means they stay green
all year. Christmas trees are evergreen.

It doesn’t always snow in winter. It can be sunny but it is usually cold even when the sun shines. It can be rainy,
foggy, windy and gloomy too.
It is almost always cold
enough to need a coat outside, as well as scarves, gloves and hats.

Even if there is no snow, there is often frost in the early mornings. People have to scrape the ice from their cars
