  • Fred saysThe Commission draws to a close and, as we look

back over the past twenty months or so, we realisethat it wasn't such a painful experience after all. Atleast we have been involved in a great variety of rolesfrom acting as first-aid party at the sad end of theLakonia to landing with 45 Commando at Dar-es-Salaam and, on the lighter side, providing Neptune'sBears at the Crossing the Line Ceremony. The Detach-ment have kept quietly in the background scrubbing, cleaning, providing boats crews, RAS parties, the spitand polish of Guard parades – Oh yes! – and Mail.

The Royal Marines Band, on the other hand, havebeen the showpiece of the ship and were forever in thepublic eye in harbour. They carried out numerousBeat Retreats. Children's Parties, Musical programmesand Dances with a remarkable amount of success.

In the sporting world, we combined to put out someformidable teams, and certain proof of this was ouroverwhelming victory in the Athletic meeting at Singa-pore where we almost cleared the board.

To round off the Commission came the Flag Showingcruise in the Mediterranean where our activities weremuch the same but with an even greater amount of"bull". The Guard and Band were in great demand forceremonial commitments, and band engagements fordances and musical programmes during the visits to

    R.M. Sports Team with Trophies

    Flight Deck Follies

Italy and Turkey left them completely exhausted.Soon we'll be saying farewell to the many friends

we've made on board during this period, but if weshould meet in the "stone" ships, a yarn over a pintwould bring back many pleasant memories of life withyou in the FIGHTING "C".. .

O God, by whom all things live, and through whomour bodies, destroyed by death, are to be changed intobetter, we most humbly beseech thee, command thesouls of these thy servants to be received by the handsof the holy angels, and brought into thy heavenlycountry. Pardon them mercifully all the sins they havecommitted, that they may live with thee in eternal light, through Jesus Christ our Lord. And may the souls ofthe faithful, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

    Amen.
