Apostles Creed Presider Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say,All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and isseated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the livingand the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the com-munion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer over the GiftsPresider Gracious God,All by the power of the Spirit

who sanctified the mother of your Son,make holy all we offer you this day.We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving Presider The Lord be with you.All And also with you.Presider Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give our thanks and praise.Presider We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God,

source of life abundant. From before time, you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, male and female, and taught us to walk in yourways. But we rebelled against you and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you call us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with saints and angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing:

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL 9

Presider Glory and honour and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us fromthe power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you lookedwith favour upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and beara son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He brokebread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news tothe poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless ofhis call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon thecross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you.On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He tookbread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks toyou, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of thenew Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness ofsins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice.Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood ofChrist. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new cre-ation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made.In the fullness of time bring us, with all your saints, from every tribe and languageand people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation ofthe world.Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,to you be honour, glory and praise, for ever and ever.

All Amen.

Lord’s PrayerPresider As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,All Our Father in heaven, Forgive us our sins

hallowed be your name, as we forgive those who sin against us.your kingdom come, Save us from the time of trial, your will be done, and deliver us from evil.on earth as in heaven. For the kingdom, the power,Give us today our daily bread. and the glory are yours,

now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the BreadPresider God of promise,

you prepare a banquet for us in your kingdom. All Happy are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.

Presider The gifts of God for the people of God.All Thanks be to God.

A Spotless RoseWords: 14th Century Anon; Music: Herbert Howells

A Spotless Rose is blowing, Sprung from a tender root,Of ancient seer’ foreshowing, Of Jesse promised fruit; Its fairest bud unfolds to light Amid the cold, cold winter,And in the dark midnight.

Solo: The Rose which I am singing, Whereof Isaiah said, Is from its sweet fruit springing In Mary, purest Maid; For through our God’s great love and might,The Blessed Babe she bare us In a cold, cold winter’s night.(Choir: A Spotless Rose is blowing, Sprung from a tender root,Its bud unfolds in the dark midnight.)

Choir: The Rose which I am singing…

Prayer and Laying-on of Hands for HealingWe invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else, or to share in

a prayer of thanksgiving for blessings received, to come to the front of the line to receive the bread andwine. Immediately after receiving, go to the prayer station. Give your first name and in a low voice brieflystate your prayer need. The prayer team will lay hands gently on your shoulders and after a short silence, they will pray quietly for you. While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence — this is a timefor quiet prayer and meditation.

Share the GiftsIf you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without, then you have par-ticipated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If youdesire to know the love of God that overcomes indifference and despair, if you desire the reconcil-

iation that overcomes estrangement and alien ation then you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant. The bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the commoncup. If you wish to dip bread in the wine, extend one hand for a wafer. Both wine and unfermented grapejuice are served, grape juice is administered from the pottery chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available uponrequest in the East alcove.

Where are the Pledge Packages? Are you wondering when your pledge package isgoing to arrive? Well, this year the Cathedral isn’tsending out pledge packages for 2014. Instead, weneed to focus as a community on the ministry ofthe Cathedral in 2013. The Cathedral is experienc-ing some real life and energy in a number of areasTHIS year. We have a thriving children and youthprogram, a new Beer & Bible group, new clergy, new children & youth staff, and we are celebratingthe beginning of our 125th year at the Cathedral -with a new interior walking tour and new exterior

banners. Even the parish hall is getting a face lift, with the Common Threads community arts proj-ect. As we move into that 125th year, we need tofinish this year on a strong note. But at themoment we are facing a $25,000 deficit by yearend if things continue as they have. So we are send-ing out special appeal letters to the parish and ourfriends, asking for an additional year-end gift. Ifyou give regularly by envelope, credit card or debit,we are asking you for a special "13th month" offer-ing, and if you give once or twice a year, or at year-end, we are asking you to consider an increase inyour annual donation, to support all the goodthings that are happening THIS year at theCathedral, so we can start our 125th year off on astrong note. If you don't receive a letter in the nextweek, and would like to be included in the future, please let Kathy or Mark know in the office. As for2014, we’re going to ask for your support in 2014.As we enter the New Year, automatic offeringsthrough credit card and debit will be processed asusual unless we hear from you asking to changeamounts. And for everyone, we hope you will con-tinue giving at the same amount, or greater, in theNew Year.

My spiritual home...

s

‘When I knew that the Cathedral was my spiritualhome’The Cathedral’s mission of ‘Open Doors, OpenHearts, Open Minds’ first brought me here. These loving words resonate with who I am as aChristian, and who I am as a person. When Ifirst came to the Cathedral for a Christmas Eveservice two years ago, I felt this mission beinglived out. The feeling of unconditional lovewarmed my heart on a cold day. One year later,I was back in the Cathedral on Christmas Eve asa parishioner with my partner Ryan and my fam-ily, and I knew this was my spiritual home. I feltso comfortable, so at peace, and so blessed to callthe Cathedral home – and that is how I contin-ue to feel each time I am here.Kevin Bespflug

My Spiritual JourneyMy journey began in Saskatchewan in 1938 withmy baptism in St. Peter’s Anglican Church inKindersley. After attending my late wife’s FirstUnited Church in Kelowna for fifty years, on herdeath I moved to Vancouver in 2003 and for awhile attended both Anglican’s St. Paul’s andUnited’s St. John’s denominations. Eventually Ibegan going to Christ Church and it’s (for me)easier access. The clergy was so informed, theliturgy so beautiful, and the parishioners so wel-coming that I felt as though I’d come home final-ly after nearly sixty years. Shortly after, I was, with Ellen’s help, confirmed and became a mem-ber of Christ Church. It’s a decision I’ve neverregretted. I always look forward to participatingin activities with the many friends I’ve made.Jack Tait

22 The Fourth Sunday of Advent | December 22, 2013

There is a poem that I read in my sermon onAdvent 4 three years ago that I want to quote again– partly because that means you will now have it tokeep. It’s by the English poet and theologian NicolaSlee and is entitled simply ‘Joseph’.

I like it that you are largely silent. You speak with your actions rather than words. You stood by Mary and did not disgrace her.You raised the boy as your own, though you knew he was not.

I like those medieval paintings of you, doddery and old, falling asleep in the corner of thestableor looking on from a little distance.Perhaps you are crouching over a small fire, cooking up some mess for your young wife exhaustedby labour,or coaxing her to eat. There is tenderness in your bearing,a gentleness outdoing the painterly meekness of thedonkey and ox.You don’t demand our attention.

I like it that you didn’t lord it over wife and child, that you let them be the stars.I like the fact that you’re no paterfamilias, ruling thehousehold.I like the kind of man you were content to be.

The media often tries to tell us that Christmas is allabout family, and illustrates that with images of aconventional husband and wife (usually happilyensconced in the kitchen cooking a humungousturkey) and 2.4 happy children. But Christmas isactually all about changing our views of relation-ships and reminding us that the roles which societyprefers for us may not be the ones that God is call-ing us to take on.

Archdeacon’s Notes THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT 2013

So Joseph is not the dominant adult in the HolyFamily, Mary is - not the little wifey in the kitchenbut the courageous Mother of God who accepts adestiny in which the only certainty is great pain.Joseph in turn loves and nurtures a child who is nothis by blood and refuses to act ‘like a man’ in theterms of his culture which would have meant aban-doning his betrothed when she fell pregnant.

Christmas is a time for celebrating the bonds oflove that tie us to others – but those bonds can’t bedefined and dictated by anyone other than our-selves. Your family may be the people you shareblood ties with but they may also be the peoplewho have loved and supported you as friends andcompanions. Your family may happily embrace tra-ditional roles – and follow the classic model ofmum, dad and a couple of kids – or it may be anyform that works for you and frees all who are partof it to be the best they can be.

So as you put out your crib scene this year, and asyou watch our annual tableau, remember that theHoly Family is a model of counter-cultural ways ofbeing family. Mary and Joseph, and the way theyare together, is a reminder that God doesn’t stick tosociety’s rules - and an invitation to explore ourown identities and relationships as we celebrate thechanges that Christ the Love Child brings to theworld.
