Volume 20 FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER May 3, 2020
No one ever thought this school year would take the change that it has! We have switched to an alternative learning platform and students are working and learning from home! This year has brought a lot of amazing changes to benefit our students. One of the newest additions is the introduction of the Rita Zdun Memorial Scholarship. It was earlier this Fall that Mr. Zdun asked to meet with Mrs. Blasé, our school assistance principal and middle school math teacher. At that meeting he offered to give a scholarship on behalf of his wife. Rita Zdun was an amazing teacher who had an enthusiasm for teaching math and science. She made it enjoyable for students and took them to new levels with her passion! She taught in the Westchester public schools for 34 years. In just a few short weeks, we will be opening the application process to our current 8th graders that are members of Mary, Mother of Divine Grace Parish. Due to not being in school, students and their parents will be able to apply online. The application process is easy and requires the students to show how their future dreams include the areas of math and science. They will also be required to show that they academically work hard in these areas and, if awarded, these students will need to continue to excel in math and science. This scholarship will assist with a majority of their high school tuition. A maximum of two students can be chosen annually to receive the scholarship in the amount of $10,000 or the cost of tuition, whichever is less. Students may reapply each year once they have received the award, to continue throughout their high school years for a maximum of four years. There will be a team of people reviewing applications that will together decide who will receive the award. I will chair the team and it will also include Fr. Marcin, our Pastor, and John Maher, our Director of Operations. We are eager to start this process and see our students move on to the Catholic High Schools they have chosen. We pray that this scholarship will follow them every year until graduation. We are so blessed to have learned about the amazing teacher Rita Zdun was and that, with the help of her husband, we can pass her memory onto our students. To apply for the scholarship, please go to https://forms.gle/CvbEbT4ydh5QwCsa8. Lynn LeTourneau, M.Ed. Principal Divine Providence School Mary, Mother of Divine Grace Parish

Everybody Needs Somebody Sometime…
A quick internet search of the phrase "Everybody Needs Somebody Sometime" produces the lyrics of several songs that were popular in their time period. Though the words may have a special meaning in each of the songs, the sentiment is universal. We are not alone in the world, and sometimes each of us needs a little help in our own lives.
The people of Mary, Mother of Divine Grace Parish are served by a group of St. Vincent de Paul Society volunteers working out of both worship sites. The Divine Infant SVDP Group can provide help to those needing emergency, temporary, or ongoing assistance in the form of food or other aid.
If you need help, or know someone who needs help, please call the Divine Infant rectory at 708-865-8071 and someone from our St. Vincent Group will contact you. All information is strictly confidential.
Everybody needs somebody sometime...
A big thank you to Carlos Espinoza of .316 Cast Media for filming and producing our weekly Masses. His pa ence and professionalism has been a blessing to us throughout this me.
Thank You, Carlos!
Because we can’t go to Mass… Catholics are encouraged to make a “spiritual communion”. St. John Paul II writes that “it is good to cultivate in our hearts a constant desire for the sacrament of the Eucharist. This was the origin of practice of “spiritual communion” which has happily been established in the Church for centuries and recommended by saints who were masters of the spiritual life. Saint Teresa of Jesus wrote: “When you do not receive communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by the love God will be greatly impressed on you”” (Ecclesia Eucharistia, no.34).
Catholics are also encouraged to watch local TV for Sunday Mass. Mercy Home celebrates Mass every Sunday at 9:30am on WGN, Chicago.
Our parish website; www.marymotherofdivinegrace.org has a link to Masses recorded right here at Divine Infant Jesus Church and Divine Providence Church. This week Fr. Tom will be celebrating the 4th Sunday of Easter on May, 3, 2020. There are also links to the Cardinal’s Masses.
If you can’t go to church, BE the Church.

Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that you are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my Soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. Although you have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

IN NEED OF A SHEPHERD
For a while it was very fashionable to own pigs as pets. The publicity surrounding these creatures informed us that they were,
contrary to their popular image, very clean animals, and also quite smart. Sad to say, sheep will most likely never enjoy this sort of domestic vogue. They are neither clean nor smart and are largely defenseless when left on their own, even in large numbers. The biblical image of us as the flock of sheep is not a particularly flattering one. Sheep without a shepherd are truly sad, because they most likely will perish either from their inability to fend for themselves or from their lack of defenses against predators. Placing ourselves in the heart of this unflattering image can reinforce our faith. Until we come to a profound realization of how much we need a shepherd, we cannot appreciate how deeply blessed we are to have been given a Shepherd, one who laid down his life for us and was raised to life eternal in the Spirit, so he might guide us and we might follow him in faith forever. PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
O God, You have chosen the Apostles to make disciples of all nations and by Baptism and Confirmation you have called all of us to build up Your Holy Church.
We earnestly implore You to choose from among us, Your children, many priests, broth-ers and sisters who will love You with their whole heart and will gladly spend their entire lives to make You known and loved by all.
Amen.

EASTER, WATER and the SPRINKLING RITE It’s way more than just getting wet!
We all have been sprinkled with holy water at some time in our church or have blessed ourselves with it as we enter church. Beginning on the Easter Vigil and continuing through Pentecost, is a season when we might be blessed with holy water by the Sprinkling Rite during Mass.
The Roman Missal allows for the substitution of the Sprinkling Rite for the Penitential Act on Sundays throughout the year, but especially recommends it at Easter, as a reminder of baptism. The Sprinkling Rite reinforces the sense of deep, new beginnings marked by Easter. Think about how the water ties the dying and rising of the faithful in the waters of Baptism to the dying and rising of Christ himself that we celebrated during Holy Week.
Easter is not the only time that the Sprinkling Rite can be used. Supplementary to the popular desert motif of Lent, a time of denial, Lent also looks to our Baptism, our new beginnings out of sin. This emphasis makes Lent an appropriate time for the occasional usage of the Sprinkling Rite, especially at the scrutinies for the RCIA candidates.
A sprinkling of holy water is a perfect fit for the penitential dimension of the Mass, and an appropriate substitute for the familiar tropes of “Lord, have mercy…Christ, have mercy…”. The Penitential Act of the Mass not only brings to mind our sins, but more directly celebrates the goodness of God who, in his infinite mercy, forgives us. Sorrow, yes, but new life from God’s mercy – that is stronger than our weakness. So too, do we connect the new life of water and Baptism with God’s mercy and new life.
Consider also how we connect water and Baptism to the new life we have in death. No doubt you have seen how a funeral Mass begins with sprinkling, how the casket is clothed in white, and how the Paschal Candle is front and center at the funeral Mass. All of these gestures intentionally bring to mind new life (just as we had in the waters of Baptism), as we were clothed in a white baptismal garment (or clothed by the white funeral pall) and brought to the front were the Paschal Candle sits so that, as at Baptism, we might “receive the Light of Christ.”
The Roman Missal’s prayers on the Sprinkling Rite enhance our understanding that Easter and water are tied together -- water is restorative, health and life-giving, producing fruitfulness and life, just as the Risen Jesus does for us. Consider the Antiphons sung at Mass. You may have heard these before, but, in any event, they signify the importance of water in our faith.
I saw water flowing from the Temple, from its right-hand side, alleluia: and all to whom this water came were saved and shall say: Alleluia, alleluia.
From your side, O Christ, bursts forth a spring of water, by which the squalor of the world is washed away and life is made new again, alleluia.
So, water’s connection with Easter? It is far more significant and life-giving than simply getting wet. The next time you are hit with a little sprinkle, “soak” it in, for that is when you “feel” the love of God and his blessing upon you. You are recalling not only your own Baptism, but also perhaps a funeral, both of which have meaning because of the Glorious Resurrection of New Life at Easter.

EASTER, WATER and the SPRINKLING RITE
May 3 *FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER*
Jesus is the Good Shepherd, as we well know, though the Gospel we hear today ends just before he makes that assertation. Instead, in today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus say twice, “I am the Gate” (John 10:7,9). Jesus is not only the one who leads the sheep to pasture, protects them from harm, and cares for them as his own. He is also the one who provides a way for them to go out for sustenance and exercise, then come in for safety and rest. How does the gate function for us? Peter’s speech in the first reading give us a clue. He speaks to the people of Jerusalem, many of whom probably had shouted “Crucify him!’’ when Jesus was on trial. Peter tells them, “Repent and be baptized” (Acts 2:38), and receive forgiveness, and the Holy Spirit. We too repent and ask for forgiveness. Jesus the gate, welcomes us home so we may “have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). How do you imagine having life more abundantly? The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. / In verdant pastures he give me repose; Beside restful waters he leads me; / he refreshes my soul. R/. He guides me in right paths / for his name’s sake.
