WASHINGTON, March 2.—A. T. Law- she has been selected to succeed' Third Assistant Postmaster General Madden. Lawshe is from Indiana and was audi- tor for the Postofiice Department under President McKinley. GETS POSTOFFICB PLUM Rosenthal's greatest successes were with a group of Chopin numbers, in- cluding the sonata that contains the famous "Funeral March," with a pre- lude and Valse, Op. 42. From 'the point of mere technique "The Blue Danube" fantasie, an ar- rangement of the Strauss music with infinitely difficult variations, and varia- tions on a theme from Papaninl, ar- ranged by Brahms, took first place. Th» performer interpolated tuneful bit* one of the "Musical Moments" of Schubert, an aria by Schumann and a berceuse by Heuselt, all of which were delicious. A Weber eonata. Op. 39, was less BUCcessfuL It did not seem to be adapted to the Roeenthal temperament as were tho other numbers. Even in this tho performer's absolutely perfect mastery of the keyboard wa» felt powerfully. A matinee performance Trill be given this afternoon at 2:80 o'clock. When the pianist, Rosenthal, ended his regular periormance at Christian Science Hall yesterday afternoon an audience that filled the auditorium com- pletely clamored for more. Women constituted the majority of the music- lovers present, but there was a large sprinkling of men, who raised their voices Jn loud acclaim, while the women eplit gloves Ui their enthusiasm. Half a dozen times Rosenthal came to the Etage, bowed and modestly re- tired. Still the demand for more was vociferous and finally the pianist yielded. Rosenthal Renders Chopin in Masterful Style at Recital PIANIST PLEASES BIG AUDIENCE OF WOMEN Within the past fortnight arrange- ments have been made for the con- struction on the northeast corner of Grant avenue and Market street of a eplendid building for the Union Trust Company, this also being in the Blythe block. The policy of the Bankers' In- vestment Company is to have the Blythe property improved in a manner that will yield a large Income and make the block one of the most im- portant centers of San Francisco in a business way. When a discussion was instituted two years ago as whioh was - the most valuable block in San Francisco men prominently connected with the Bank- ers* Investment Company maintained that the Blythe block was entitled to the honor. The same opinion is. still maintained by the company. The Bankers' Investment Company has closed a lease with I. Magnin & Co. that involves the payment by the latter concern of $1,000,000 in rents in twenty-five years. The papers were \u25a0signed at the Union Trust Company's bank yesterday. The Bankers' Invest- ment Company agrees to erect a six- story building at the southeast corner of Grant avenue arid Geary street on a lot 100x100 feet, which is a part of the Blythe property. The structure will be class A. -_ : Magnin & Co. Rosenthal's greatest successes werewith a group of Chopin numbers, in-cluding the sonata that contains thefamous "Funeral March," with a pre-lude and Valse, Op. 42.

From 'the point of mere technique"The Blue Danube" fantasie, an ar-rangement of the Strauss music withinfinitely difficult variations, and varia-tions on a theme from Papaninl, ar-ranged by Brahms, took first place.

Th» performer interpolated tunefulbit*

—one of the "Musical Moments" of

Schubert, an aria by Schumann and aberceuse by Heuselt, all of which weredelicious. A Weber eonata. Op. 39, wasless BUCcessfuL It did not seem to beadapted to the Roeenthal temperamentas were tho other numbers. Even inthis tho performer's absolutely perfectmastery of the keyboard wa» feltpowerfully. A matinee performanceTrill be given this afternoon at 2:80o'clock.

When the pianist, Rosenthal, endedhis regular periormance at ChristianScience Hall yesterday afternoon anaudience that filled the auditorium com-pletely clamored for more. Womenconstituted the majority of the music-lovers present, but there was a largesprinkling of men, who raised theirvoices Jn loud acclaim, while the womeneplit gloves Ui their enthusiasm.

Half a dozen times Rosenthal cameto the Etage, bowed and modestly re-tired. Still the demand for more wasvociferous and finally the pianistyielded.

PIANIST PLEASES BIGAUDIENCE OF WOMEN

Within the past fortnight arrange-ments have been made for the con-struction on the northeast corner ofGrant avenue and Market street of aeplendid building for the Union TrustCompany, this also being in the Blytheblock. The policy of the Bankers' In-vestment Company is to have theBlythe property improved in a mannerthat will yield a large Income andmake the block one of the most im-portant centers of San Francisco in abusiness way.

When a discussion was instituted twoyears ago as whioh was - the mostvaluable block in San Francisco menprominently connected with the Bank-ers* Investment Company maintainedthat the Blythe block was entitled tothe honor. The same opinion is. stillmaintained by the company.

The Bankers' Investment Companyhas closed a lease with I.Magnin &Co. that involves the payment by thelatter concern of $1,000,000 in rents intwenty-five years. The papers were\u25a0signed at the Union Trust Company'sbank yesterday. The Bankers' Invest-ment Company agrees to erect a six-story building at the southeast cornerof Grant avenue arid Geary street on alot 100x100 feet, which is a part ofthe Blythe property. The structurewill be class A. -_:
