A MESSAGE FROM ANNE KEENER

COMMISSIONED PASTOR

As I sat down to write this article, I first word that came to mind was grateful. I am grateful that God has called me to serve in this wonderful congregation alongside this faithful staff. I have received questions from some of you asking about my journey to becoming a Commissioned Pastor so I thought it might be helpful to share some of it here. Jim and I have been active members of this congregation since 1998. We especially enjoyed working with the youth before we even had our own children, Julie and Brian, who are now being blessed by our thriving youth ministry. After being part of the youth and other ministries, I was asked to serve as a Stephen Leader. The Leader Training Conference was a meaningful and growth filled experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed serving in our Stephen Ministry as a leader for ten years. That experience nurtured gifts that God had given me and helped me developed other gifts. After taking Home Communion with Pastor Chris one Sunday, he asked if I had ever considered pastoral work. That question eventually led to my joining the staff part time in November 2013 to help with pastoral care. As my role expanded over the years, I moved to full time in March 2016. When I came on staff, I knew I would love the pastoral care and working with the caring ministries of this congregation, but I didn’t expect to enjoy worship leadership so much. I know my nerves were obvious as I began assisting in worship, and I am grateful for all the love and support this congregation has offered me. While Chris was in Austin for one of his DMin classes, he learned of a mostly online program through Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary that he thought might be a good option for me. After learning about the Certificate in Ministry, I immediately applied and began my first class, Pastoral Care and Leadership, in January 2016. As I was finishing my last class this fall, I sent my Commissioned Pastor application to our presbytery. After being affirmed by the examination task force in November, I had the joy and honor of being installed as a Commissioned Pastor at the presbytery meeting in February. It was deeply meaningful to answer the commissioning questions in front of the presbytery where I was formed as a child and in the sanctuary where I continue to be formed as a beloved child of God. One of my favorite commissioning questions is, “Will you pray for and seek to serve the people with energy, intelligence, imagination, and love?” My enthusiastic answer was and is, “I will, with God’s help.”

As I shared the Sunday in December when Chris presented me with my Certificate in Ministry in worship, this faith community saw gifts in me before I saw them in myself. I am beyond grateful for all the ways you, as individuals and as a community, have nurtured me and continue helping me grow as a disciple. Gratefully, Anne

Café Justo y Mas - Just Coffee and More!

Café Justo is a network of coffee grower cooperatives that grow, roast, package, and ship their own coffee all over the US and many other countries. They offer sustainable wages, environmentally sound growing practices, and families who are able to stay together on their lands in Mexico.

Café Justo y Mas is the coffee shop in Agua Prieta that makes the best latte I have ever had. Seriously. I enjoy lattes everywhere I travel. These are made with organic, fair trade beans but also the baristas’ are people who have struggled through drug or alcohol addiction and now have a job at Café Justo y Mas. They are served with love from the soil to the cup.

I hope you will join the Border Trip Team as we tell more details of our trip at the dinner on April 24 called the Flapjack Giveback. We will also be serving Café Justo with love.

Hunger Banquet

As part of our Lenten Wednesdays, FPC will be hosting a Hunger Banquet on Wednesday, April 3. Since 1974, Oxfam has been working with volunteers to create awareness of hunger. Oxfam Hunger Banquets give you the opportunity to make a difference, both locally and globally. Join us for an interactive evening as we explore together the realities of poverty and hunger in Middle Tennessee. Guests randomly select tickets matching real people who are high-, middle-, or low-income earners and will receive their meal based off their ticket for the night. This family-friendly event will help us have conversations about who has access to the table during this Lenten season. Join us in Wilson Hall from 6:00-7:30—all are welcome.

Many thanks to Catholic Charities for their support in organizing this event. For more information on Oxfam’s work, visit www.oxfamamerica.org.

MISSION

Join us for our April 2NDSAT on April 13! We will be making hygiene kits for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to share with communities after natural disasters. Many people do not have access to basic essentials in the days and weeks after a disaster, and these kits help immediately show care from their larger community. Join us in Wilson Hall at 9:00—sign up today online or on the church Connection Card on Sunday mornings.

We shared a meal and conversation with some of our neighbors in the Muslim community, sharing our stories and exploring together how we can support and learn from one another. To hear more about this experience, talk to participants Katie and Randy Gottlieb, Cathy and Hank McCall, or Mary Sellers Shaw. If you are interested in participating in a future event, reach out to Mary Sellers Shaw at [email protected].

Hillary McBride’s authentic story of a new vision for womanhood. The group will discuss Mothers, Daughters, and Body Image: Learning to Love Ourselves as We Are on May 30 at 10 a.m. in the church parlor or at 7 p.m. at the home of Christi Granstaff. In Mothers, Daughters, and Body Image McBride tells her own story of

recovery from an eating disorder, and how her struggles led her to dream of a

new vision for womanhood—from one without body shame, negative

comparisons, or insecurities, to one of freedom, connection, and acceptance.

She also shares the true stories of young women, and their mothers, and

provides unique insights into how our relationships with our bodies are shaped

by what we see around us and the specific things we can do to have healthier

relationships with our appearance, and all the other parts of ourselves that

make us women.

RideShare Ministry

During a recent visit, a member told me that they had decided to give up their car and stop driving. They went on to say it was a hard decision but knowing we had a RideShare Ministry that would coordinate rides to and from church made the decision easier. – Anne Keener If you need a ride to worship or other church activity or would like to provide a ride for someone, email [email protected] or call Jane Herron (615-579-7466) or Steve Lewis (615-414-0047). This is a wonderful way to connect with others.

Summer Worship Preaching and Sunday School Class

Finally Comes the Poet: Prayer, Sabbath, Resistance

This summer we will explore the poetry and prose of three contemporary writers whose words have shaped Christianity in the United States for over forty years. We will read excerpts from these books: Thirst, by Mary Oliver – Pulitzer-Prize-winning poet and essayist who died in early 2019. This Day: Collected and New Sabbath Poems, by Wendell Berry – poet, novelist, essayist, farmer, and environmentalist, winner of the National Humanities Medal. Sabbath as Resistance: Saying No to the Culture of Now, by Walter Brueggemann – renowned Old Testament scholar, Professor Emeritus at Columbia Theological Seminary, author of dozens of books.

Pastor Chris will preach in the summer months of June and July, bringing one of the author’s words into conversation with a biblical text. The Sunday school class will also explore the same text and reading. Participants will need to purchase the Brueggemann book. The others can be purchased as well, but relevant poems/readings will be available to participants.

Flower Ministry

This is an example of the beautiful thank you notes we receive throughout the year. This ministry is making a difference in the life of this congregation. I am most grateful each time I receive a beautiful bouquet of flowers from the church that were part of worship. You are thoughtful to bring them to me. The flowers make me feel better than some of the pills I’ve been taking. I do appreciate the thoughtfulness. Thanks again for remembering me. Sincerely, Ellen Dickinson

Growth Groups Continue to Thrive

We continue to pray for our Growth Groups as they journey together through the book Entering the Passion of Jesus: A Beginners Guide to Holy Week by Amy-Jill Levine. It is encouraging us to look at the events of Holy Week with fresh eyes which will only deepen our own Holy Week experience this year. If you are interested in learning more about the Growth Group experience, feel free to talk to anyone you see in these photos. New and deeper connections are being made through each Growth Group.

Stephen Ministry: Welcome and Thank you!

We often focus on our Stephen Ministers who provide the one-on-one weekly Christian care, but in this newsletter, I want to focus on the Stephen Leaders who work diligently behind the scenes, so Stephen Ministry can run smoothly and be a healing presence in this community of faith.

Welcome to our newest Stephen Leader, Judi Arnold. Judi has been a Stephen Minister and agreed to attend a Leader’s Training Course in St. Louis the first week of May to learn all that goes into a healthy Stephen Ministry. Please pray for Judi’s time of training, that it will provide insights for leadership and deepen her connection with God. Attending the Leader’s Training Course was a wonderful experience for me, and I trust it will also be for Judi.

Thank you to Cindy Blackburn for her time as a Stephen Leader. Cindy has served as our Referrals Coordinator for the past 2 years and Judi Arnold will be taking on that role. Stephen Leaders have different coordinator roles including: Training, Continuing Education, Supervision, Awareness, and Referrals. Thank you to Lissa Bradford and Don Bittick for responding to God’s grace by serving as Stephen Leaders. We are also blessed to have Sally Wanzer who helps with training and Leanne Hoeffler who faithfully provides information for all our communications, with the exception of this one.

As staff resource for the Congregational Care Committee and Stephen Ministry, I am grateful for our current and past Stephen Leaders who have worked hard to bring life to this important ministry and to keep it healthy and thriving. If you would like to learn more about being a Stephen Minister or having a Stephen Minister, call our Stephen Ministry confidential voicemail at 615-746-7888 or email [email protected]. Peace, Anne Keener

Senior Bibles

Imagine our college students missing home and their church family… As they are struggling and asking God for guidance, they open the Bible they received on Senior Sunday. They immediately see the countless signatures and messages on the inside covers. Some people they know well (their covenant partner, Sunday school teachers, youth leaders…) while others they are unable to picture, but together they are the church. By reading the messages, the students are reminded that they are loved and remembered by this community of faith even when they are away. We will be presenting the Bibles to the seniors in worship this Sunday. Even if many are unable to be present, the Bible will be given to them as a gift from our congregation.

Please take time this week to stop at the table in Wilson Hall, sign each Bible, and be part of reminding each student that they are a beloved child of God and are loved by this congregation.

NaCoMe Spring Retreat We had a wonderful time at NaCoMe at the beginning of March. We joined several other youth ministries in the Presbytery for a spring retreat with the theme “Living Water.” As you interact with water in everyday ordinary moments may that water remind you that you are created by God, loved by God, claimed by God, known by God, and called by God. You can find the link to more photos in the bio of our youth Instagram account. Thank you to our adult participants: Mike Reimer, Vance Lahey, Chuck Cairatti, Namaste Anderson, and Jessica Queen.

Youth Sunday THANK YOU to those pictured (and those not pictured) for working so hard to make Youth Sunday happen. Leading worship and planning a lunch & auction requires so much dedication and preparation from so many people. I am thankful for each one of you who contributed to making Youth Sunday what it was. Youth ministry thrives when it is rooted in such a vibrant and dedicated community of faith. FPC Youth Ministry is thankful for our church family.
