PENNIES TO GOLD!
CELLULAR RESPIRATION IN YEAST EXPERIMENT
Volume 3, Issue 3
The FCHS Science Department is in full swing with many different
experiments for our students. Did you know you could turn pennies
into gold? Our students took normal everyday pennies and turned
them into “gold”, (actually brass), by cleaning the pennies with
vinegar and salt and then coating the pennies in a zinc/zinc chloride
bath on hot plates (which make them look like silver). They then
burned the pennies over Bunsen burners to watch the pennies turn
to brass (which looks gold in color). A fun lab students enjoy!
In Mrs. Burke’s lab, students conducted a lab called “Cellular
Respiration in Yeast” where students mixed yeast, sugar, and warm
water together in a flask, then taped a balloon over the top of the
flask. Because of cellular respiration occurring in the yeast, the
balloon fills up with carbon dioxide, a product of this process.
In Earth Science students voyaged to the creek for freshwater
samples. Earth Space loves the Earth, but not too sure on how they
are going on a voyage to space!

Franklin FFA has produced two collegiate soil judges in the
past two years. Erin Bush, who graduated in 2013, judges at
Kansas State and Casey Campbell, who graduated in 2014, at
Iowa State. It is very rare for a college to let a freshman
judge their first year, but Kansas State and Iowa State
accepted both girls right out of high school. These two girls
met in competition recently for the Region 5 Area Soils
judging contest. Franklin FFA is very proud to be producing
top notch soil judges!

FCCLA News Fall 2014
What is FCCLA?
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a student organization that promotes personal growth and
leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences Education. Our members develop skills for life in their
families, careers and communities. Students learn and grow by participating in projects that focus on a variety of youth
concerns, such as teen pregnancy, parenting, relationships, peer pressure, environment, nutrition and fitness, and
career exploration. We also provide many opportunities for community service. FCCLA members can participate in
competitive events at the state and national level. FCCLA recognizes its members for their outstanding dedication and
achievement through program awards. Over the past several years, Franklin Community High School students have
brought home lots of gold and silver medals from our state conference, and last year one of our members attended the
FCCLA National Leadership Conference and brought home a gold medal!
What does FCCLA do? We have been BUSY this year!!
Football, Face painting, and FCCLA
One fun and successful fund raiser has been to work at F.C.H.S. home football games providing face painting and selling
small items to the fans. Our table was often so busy and popular that some of the fans joined us in “decorating” other
students with our paints.
Our National Outreach Project
Bake! Bake! Bake! Many members joined us after school in the foods labs to bake and package goodies for our bake
sale to benefit our National Outreach Project, “Share Our Strength, No Kid Hungry”. Our Nutrition and Wellness classes
made cookies for the event. Though it was probably the coldest September day ever, (think gloves, scarves, and hot
chocolate!), we managed to raise over $500 that will be sent to help feed hungry people in our own country. Our thanks
to the generous people of Franklin who supported our efforts at Wal-Mart on September 13!
FCCLA Fall Leadership Rally
Fourteen FCCLA members attended the Indiana FCCLA Fall Leadership Rally on September 30 at Purdue University.
Students attended workshops that helped to develop leadership skills and learn business etiquette. It was a beautiful
day for our campus tour which included seeing one of the large lecture halls, dining areas, dorms, and the new $90+
million dollar Recreation Center that features a gorgeous pool area and a climbing wall! The bus ride home was filled
with games and laughter---all in all, a great day to be in FCCLA!
Hats for the Hungry Day
FCCLA held their annual “Hats for the Hungry” day on Friday, October 10. On this day, FCHS students and faculty could
donate one dollar and be allowed to wear a hat during the school day. We were pleased to raise $100 to be donated to
KIC-IT. Earlier in the week, the FACS and Ag students had the privilege of hearing a representative from KIC-IT speak
about the problem of homelessness and hunger in the local area and were shocked to learn that there are over 180
homeless students just in our school corporation. The KIC-IT organization has fourteen new student volunteers as a
result of these presentations.
Trick Your Trunk!
FCCLA always likes to participate in community activities, and this year is no exception. Disney’s “Frozen” was chosen as
this year’s theme for our “Trick Your Trunk” entry. Tiffany Taylor provided a truck which we decorated with snow and
balloons. Most members dressed as the princesses in the movie, but Mickey Deputy dressed as Olaf and stole the show,
greeting each child and giving “warm hugs”! Come see our display case in the F hallway featuring some of Franklin’s
little people who were given a safe place to Trick or Treat again this year.
Upcoming Events!!
FCCLA Rush Week
November 3-7 has been designated as our “Rush Week”. FCCLA members will be participating in a campaign to recruit
new members this week and inviting them to their first official meeting—the Fall District Meeting .
FCCLA Fall District Meeting is November 8
FCHS is proud to have Tiffany Taylor named the District 8 VP of Community Service this year. We are excited to be
hosting the FCCLA Fall District Meeting on Saturday, November 8. Schools from around the Indianapolis area will be
joining us and participating in a special community project. We will be partnering with the American Sewing Guild of
Indianapolis and helping them to sew some of the 3,000 Christmas stockings that they have been making for the past
several years to give to active military who have Indiana ties. We will be joined by Leslie Gackle, our FCCLA State Adviser,
Alyson McIntyre-Reiger, FACS State Program Leader, and three FCCLA State Officers. What a great way to spend a
Saturday—giving back to those who work to protect us.
Who can be a FCCLA member?
New members are always welcome! Students who are interested in joining FCCLA should see Mrs. Torrey. Club dues are
$15 which pays for national, state, and local dues.
