The exhibition is the spontaneous devel- opment of the 2013 project displayed in the Italian Cultural Institute of Wien, pivotal to Rome’s exhibit. Trajan’s Market archaeological complex, with its massive imperial age clay-brick architectures, offers the perfect frame for the artistic production of the Austri- an artist and his forty-year long devotion for the Colosseum, portrayed from mul- tiple, all-contemporary perspectives by the means of watercolors, mezzotints, prints, Indian inks and oil paintings. In 1970, a twenty-six year-old Gutruf arrived in Rome with a government of Austria scholarship, and was immedi- ately struck by the Colosseum, in his beloving eyes the very embodiment of the eternal city. The exhibition starts with a huge in- stallation in the Grand Hall, to find full development along the corridors and the rooms of the central portion of the market, where thirty-two graphic works – in various techniques and of different sizes – establish an almost physical con- nection with the architectures and the marble statues of Augustus’ Forum. The expositive path not only develops a stimulating dialogue with the bi-mil- lennial works of art hosted in the mu- seum, but further stresses the moder- nity of Roman antiquities - universally symbolized by the Colosseum – com- mon denominator of European cultural heritage. On the occasion of the exhibition, a se- ries of meetings aimed at the in-depht analysis of various topics are scheduled every Tuesday. “Tuesdays by Trajan” will reveal the func- tioning of arena’s undergrounds, the ex- traordinary botanical species discovered during the excavations, what happened following the Imperial Age, who the gladiators really were and what amphi- theaters meant for the cities of Roman Foundation. Leonardo Da Vinci marked the tran-sition from Middle Ages into Modern Age, giving birth to works of art and projects still hiding symbols shrou-ded in mystery. On display, in an im-mersive and captivating itinerary, forty-six inventions assembled on the basis of ori-ginal projects and faithful reproduction of Leonardo’s masterpieces, presenting vi-sitors with a multimedial experience. The

first section of the exhibition is dedicated to flying machines - among which the prototype of a hang-gilder and the aerial screw – and a life-size copy of The Last Supper. The second hall hosts some of the most fascinating war machines (the cata-pult, the lethal bombard, the innovative machine gun with twelve barrels arranged in a fan formation) and the Room of Mirrors, an inge-nious chamber with eight mirrored walls allowing an object to be viewed enti-rely without moving it. The exhibition showcases some of Leonardo’s most bril-liant insights in the fields of optics and music, such as the perspectograph, the projector and the double flute. In the fourth room the experience reaches its peak. How many everyday

A copy of the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius – the original is in Palazzo dei Conserva-

THE TWO EGYPTIAN LIONSThe so-called Cordonata, the wide staircase leading from Aracoeli to Capitolium Square, is decorated by two Egyptian lions. When, in 1587, Aqua Felix was conducted on the Capitoline Hill, the lions turned into fountains. According to oral tradition, on the occasion of special celebrations, from their mouths gushed wine instead of water.

VATICAN, ORIGINS OF THE NAMEIn ancient times, it was the name of a hill on Tiber’s right bank, used as a pasture for cattle. Agrippina the Elder had gardens on its slopes, while Nero built there a private circus. After years of neglect, during which the hill became a graveyard, emperor Constantine, between 326 and 333, had the top of the hill leveled, thus allowing the edification of the first basilica dedicated to saint Peter.

IL FORO ROMANOThe Roman Forum (also kown as Forum Magnum) is an archaeological area enclosed among Palatine Hill, Capitolium, Via dei Fori Romani and the Colosseum. From the Roman Kingdom until the Middle Ages, Forum has been the seat of major institutions, the very political, economic, religious and juridical heart of the Eternal City, as well as a pivotal centre of the whole Roman civilization.
