Public Meeting To Be Held October 24 To Discuss FishhawkSports Complex Expansion

Hillsborough County will conduct a public meeting on Wednesday,October 24 to receive public comment and discuss an alternative planto expand the FishHawk Sports Complex. The meeting will be held at6:30 p.m. at Palmetto Club at Fishhawk Ranch, 17004 Dorman Roadin Lithia.

The budget for Fishhawk Sports Complex Expansion isapproximately $2.8 million and is funded through Parks Impact Fees.The proposed project will accommodate expansion of soccer andfootball programs with up to five additional fields, and it will supportinfrastructure, such as utilities, parking, storm water retention, andancillary buildings.

Patel Conservatory Youth TheaterProductions to Present Kiss Me, Kate

The Patel Conservatory Youth Theater (PCYT) Productions presents Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate, November 8-10 and15-17 at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts’ TECO Theater.

Kiss Me, Kate, the beloved musical combining Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew with Porter’s music and lyrics,will be performed by middle, high school and college students enrolled in PCYT and Patel Conservatory adult dancestudents and faculty.

This, fun, sophisticated show has been performed worldwide. This is a play-within-a-play, where each castmember’s in-stage life is complicated by offstage events. Popular musical numbers include “Wunderbar,” “Too DarnHot,” “Brush up Your Shakespeare,” “I Hate Men,” “Always True to You (In My Fashion)” and “Another Op’nin,Another Show.” Awarded the Tony® in 1949, the show ran for more than 1,000 performances on Broadway. Directedby Adam Wagner, the Patel Conservatory version of Kiss Me, Kate will feature 24 performers, period costumes,wonderful sets and live music.

The students are getting so much more than performance experience, Wagner says, adding they have been putting in17 hours a week in preparation since September 5. Because the Kiss Me, Kate cast is enrolled in the PCYT class, nomatter what role they have in the show, they will come away with so much knowledge. Cast members have memorizedShakespearean monologues to help them prepare for future auditions, they’ve learned Porter songs and the history of hislife and more.

“Kiss Me, Kate captures everything that can go wrong in life, in love and in the theater and spins it into a tarantellaof comedy. It’s a Shakespeare musical comedy mashup,” said Ami Sallee, Patel Conservatory theater department chair.

The Hillsborough County Commission on the Status of Women isnow accepting nominations for the 2013 Class of the HillsboroughCounty Women’s Hall of Fame. Up to three outstanding women willbe selected. Inductees may also be honored posthumously.

The Women’s Hall of Fame was created in 2011 to honor andcelebrate the achievements of local women who have made significantcontributions in areas such as business, education, philanthropy,military and public service for the betterment of life for residents ofHillsborough County. Thirteen women have now been inducted.

Historic Marker To Honor TempleTerrace Founder Bertha Palmer

The first historic marker in Hillsborough County with a photographwill be dedicated to the historical significance of Temple Terracefounder Bertha Palmer and the only Palmer structure remaining inTemple Terrace—the Woodmont Clubhouse—on Monday, October29, at 5 p.m. The event will be held at the Woodmont Clubhouse andWoodmont Park Gazebo, 415 Woodmont Ave. in Temple Terrace.

The public is invited to the formal dedication ceremony followed byan Open House of the clubhouse and grounds, hosted by theWoodmont Clubhouse Association, Inc.

October 29 marks the 33rd anniversary for the establishment of theWoodmont Clubhouse Association, Inc. The organization saved thebuilding from destruction, and turned it from Palmer’s “RiverhillsRanch” (circa 1914) into a non-profit community center and home forits sponsoring clubs.

The marker is a result of five community organizations comingtogether as a group, coordinated by local historian Grant Rimbey ofthe Temple Terrace Preservation Society and Woodmont ClubhouseAssociation President Ruth Morris. Matching funds from the GeneralFederation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Temple Terrace Woman’sClub; the GFWC Temple Terrace Junior Woman’s Club, the TempleTerrace Garden Club; the Temple Terrace Preservation Society; andthe Woodmont Clubhouse Association. Jobsite Theater to Present the 25thAnniversary “Fan Favorite” Gorey Stories

Jobsite Theater, downtown Tampa’s award-winning resident professional theater company, is thrilled to keep theirHalloween tradition alive by bringing back one of their most loved shows – a deliciously dark and playful comic takeon 18 short stories by Edward Gorey. Gorey Stories, a play with music adapted by Stephen Currens with music byDavid Aldrich, plays October 24 – November 18 in the Shimberg Playhouse at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for thePerforming Arts.

Gorey Stories is a compilation of stories, poems and limericks – a neo-gothic vision of the world as dark, mysterious,and yet simultaneously hilarious. In the mix are unusual creatures, curious landscapes, insanity, religious fanaticism,murder, catchy tunes and a deep appreciation for all of the arts.

One of the many changes to Jobsite’s 2012 staging of the show is the addition of an encore mini-concert of songsfrom the album by The Tiger Lillies with Kronos Quartet, The Gorey End. Gorey shared a box of unpublished storieswith The Tiger Lillies before his death that they turned into a concept album, and Jobsite will be staging songs such as“Gin,” “The Weeping Chandelier,” and “The Hipdeep Family.” Other changes to the show from Jobsite’s 2007production include new takes on the costumes, set, props and make-up, along with the introduction of video projectionand puppetry, new arrangements of the music with different instruments, and a cast of six now performing a show whichwas originally done with a cast of nine.

The late Edward Gorey (d. 2000) illustrated and wrote short stories, poems, prose and plays based in an eerie andmacabre world full of odd characters (often children) that experience strange fates and mysterious demises. Among hisbest-known works are dark delights like The Gashleycrumb Tinies, The Hapless Child and the titillating tale The CuriousSofa. His illustrations resemble Victorian-era woodcut drawings with a bit of Goya, Aubrey Beardsley and CharlesAddams thrown in for good measure. His illustrations were animated for the introduction to the PBS show Mystery!,and he provided production design for popular Broadway productions such as Dracula (for which he won a Tony® Awardfor Best Costumes). He also illustrated T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the basis for the musical CATS.

Jobsite believes the show to be suitable for most, though always recommends patrons do their research. The dark butplayful material has the occasional bit of entendre and is certainly darkly sardonic, but the amusing results are suitablefor those who already love Lemony Snicket or the worlds of Tim Burton.

Jobsite’s production features a six-member ensemble under the direction of Jobsite Producing Artistic Director DavidM. Jenkins: Jason Evans, Amy Gray, Summer Bohnenkamp-Jenkins, Michael C. McGreevy, Spencer Meyers and KatrinaStevenson. Gorey Stories is under the baton of music director Robert Jarosh and features a three-piece band consisting ofpiano, double-bass and percussion. The monochromatic pallete (black, white and grey) of the show will be brought to lifeby a scenic and lighting design by Brian Smallheer, costumes by three-time Best of the Bay Award-winning designerKatrina Stevenson, puppets and marionettes by Amanda Bearss, and properties by Christen Petitt-Hailey.

Economic ProsperityStakeholder CommitteeMeeting To Be Held On October 23

The next Hillsborough County EconomicProsperity Stakeholder Committee meeting willbe held on Tuesday, October 23, at 9 a.m. atCounty Center, 26th Floor Conference Room, 601E. Kennedy Blvd., downtown Tampa.

The Hillsborough County Commissionersapproved the creation of an Economic ProsperityStakeholder Committee (EPSC) in March 2012with the mission of examining the County’sregulatory structure and makingrecommendations to ease the burden and cost ofregulatory oversight on economic development,while maintaining the County’s commitment toquality of life and responsible environmentalstewardship. The Stakeholder Committee includes21 members, who represent development and landuse interests, minority communities, smallbusinesses, and economic development andenvironmental interests. It is chaired byCommissioner Sandra Murman and vice-chairedby Commissioner Lesley “Les” Miller, Jr.

Hillsborough County to Host DisabilityMentoring Day

Hillsborough County will host its annualDisability Mentoring Day on Thursday,November 1, celebrating the event’s 12thanniversary. It’s a chance for local students withdisabilities to shadow business mentors andachieve hands-on experience in the work place.

County Commissioner Al Higginbotham willpresent a proclamation declaring November 1Disability Mentoring Day in Hillsborough County.

Sarah Goldman, a University of CentralFlorida student who serves as a mentor with TheAble Trust for students with disabilities, will beamong the special guests. Goldman, who wasborn with cerebral palsy, is the ambassadorshown on all Disability Mentoring Week postersthroughout the state. Richard Olle, a DisabilityMentoring Day alumni, will share hisexperiences with the audience.

Mentees are paired with mentors fromvolunteer businesses, including manyHillsborough County departments, SunTrustBank, Tampa General Hospital, and the TempleTerrace Police Department. They will learn aboutthe day-to-day responsibilities required ofoccupations, and the skills and education neededspecific to a career field that interests them.

Disability Mentoring Day is implemented inlocations around the country and internationallyevery year. Last year, more than 16,000 studentsand jobseekers participated in DisabilityMentoring Day in every state and 20 internationallocations. The national campaign began in 1999as part of a White House effort to increase theprofile of National Disability EmploymentAwareness Month, celebrated every October.Hillsborough County has participated since 2003.
