Tempo di Libri is the new Book Fair for publishers that will be held at the Milan Trade Fair in Rho on 19-23 April. A Trade Fair not only for books but for contents, and centred on the reader, who will be free to choose, to read all proposals offered in the programme through the 26 key letters of the alphabet (plus the @ of the digital world). A genuine tool to design individual paths by following different stories in the form of books, voices, graphic novels, video games, movies and newspapers. It is a Trade Fair in which publishers, literary festivals, magazines and newspapers have been invited to participate as event publishers. At Tempo di Libri publishing means expressing a cultural design. Tempo di Libri is a scene, from A to Z, in which every reader and every curious person can create his/her own alphabet, and use those letters to make words, and those words to do everything. It is the same idea that inspired Magoz, the international illustrator who, requested to design the image of the Book Fair, represented the book by summarising everything that it has been and will always be for us, namely a window, a door, a cosy place and much more. These clues, and all the worlds enclosed in the alphabet, will be translated into an equal number of personalised adventures, a map of which will be provided on the official website and app.

A-Z

The alphabet of Tempo di Libri is a structure that allows stories and different worlds to interweave ― 26 letters-words plus the @ of the digital world ― and it has allowed us to develop every event with all the publishers attending the Book Fair. We started on 16 January with the letter D of Dissident that will be the protagonist of the Fair with the series of daily meetings with Roberto Saviano, Diego Osorno, Pinar Selek, Giancarlo Ceraudo and Miriam Lewin (chaired by Marino Sinibaldi). And also with widely known figures, whose political, religious, cultural and social activity has always been characterised by strong personal commitment, often clashing with institutions and agreements. We could mention Father Milani, whose Meridiano edited by Alberto Melloni will be previewed at the Book Fair. Always under the term “dissidence”, the World Day of Books and Copyright, the Italian Association of Publishers (AIE), the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) and the International Publishers Union (IPA) have organised an international conference on freedom of expression on 23 April. Core topics will be the closing down of publishing firms in Turkey, censorship and control of publishers of school books in Hungary, the ferocious repression in Egypt and in China. The event will focus on the stories of three young women, Ildikó Török, Yonca Cingoz and Angela Gui who witnessed resistance in the name of freedom of speech, and the geography of dissent in today’s world will be narrated, curated by Kristenn Einarsson with reflections by Egyptian author ʿAlāʾ al-Aswānī and journalist Emiliano

Fittipaldi. The letter J will be used in the tag #JaneAusten, one of the greatest authors of all times. This year is the bicentenary of her death. A series of lezioni d'autrice, (lessons from a female author) held by important voices of contemporary literature, such as Italian Simonetta Agnello Hornby, British Sophie Kinsella, Spanish Clara Sánchez and Italian Sveva Casati Modignani will be dedicated to her. Anniversaries continue at the letter T that, fifty years after his death, stands for Totò. Maurizio de Giovanni will read 'A livella’ (The Spirit Level) and Diego De Silva and Sergio Rubini will interpret an impossible dialogue/interview entitled Totò e la morte (Totò and Death). Z, instead, stands for Zaha Hadid, a great woman and architect who died in 2016. A meeting-tribute will be dedicated to her with Stefano Boeri and Mario Coppola, a young architect who worked in Zaha Hadid’s London firm and has written a novel based on this experience. The book will be released at Tempo di Libri. From Zaha Hadid’s biography to those of extraordinary women and men - a tribute to the Swiss author and intellectual Annemarie Schwarzenbach will be paid by Melania Mazzucco (who, at the E of Estraneo (Stranger), will participate with Carlotta Sami, spokesperson for the UNHCR and a manager of Meds Sans Frontières, in a meeting on migrants that will consider their tracks from black Africa to Italian Centres for Identification and Expulsion (CIE)). A portrait of the photographer, poetess and painter Dora Maar will be outlined by Concita De Gregorio. The parable of life and imaginations of Antonio Santelia, who died very young but whose drawings and architectural projects have inspired generations of dreamers, as also the horizons of Metropolis and Blade Runner, will be discussed in a dialogue on architecture and design of the future with Gianni Biondillo and Luca Molinari. The centenary of the Russian Revolution will be recalled at the letter R with four special appointments spanning the periods from Lenin to Stalin and Putin (with the former ambassador in the Soviet Union Sergio Romano, the founder of “il manifesto”, journalist and author, Luciana Castellina, and the historian and essayist David Bidussa, Director of the Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Foundation’s library), from the role of avant-garde artistic movements (related by Barbara Alberti) to that of great poets, such as Majakovskij (described by Serena Vitale). In 2017 the number 100 will also be important for its reference to the Giro d'Italia, the one-hundredth edition of the race for the pink T-shirt will leave a few days after Tempo di Libri and will be celebrated at the Book Fair at the letter G for Grand Tour (a word that also triggers powerful literary suggestions), with several appointments that will involve, among others, the Director of Rai Sport Gabriele Romagnoli, and authors Fabio Genovesi and Maurizio Maggiani. The letter X will play various roles, including that of defining the portraits of authors. Meetings/conversations will trace the whole career of some leading interpreters of narrative literature between the 1900s and the 21st century. Tempo di Libri will host Irish Edna O'Brien (symbol of the eternal restlessness of the “country girls”), Israeli David Grossman (who will have a discussion with Wlodek Goldkorn and Caterina Bonvicini) and Abraham Yehoshua, the Italian Fleur Jaeggy, Margaret Mazzantini, Michele Mari, Walter Siti, Domenico Starnone and the critic Alberto Asor Rosa. Instead it will not be X, but Q of Quanto (how long) that will define the much awaited meeting with Irvine Welsh. In perfect symbiosis with an event, whose very name refers to the passing of time, the Scottish author will reason about the twenty years spent between the first adventures of the protagonists of Trainspotting and their recent return to cinema screens with T2 (Trainspotting 2). How much have the protagonists of that rip-roaring generation changed? And how much have we changed? Irvine Welsh will converse with Vanni Santoni, author of a bizarre

“Trainspotting nel Valdarno” (Trainspotting in Valdarno), who will also be the lead figure with Michela Murgia and two role players of Extremelot and Dreamalot, Fabrizio Gagliarducci and Alessandro Giammei, now a fellow at Princeton, of a discussion on the Middle Earth and role-playing to recall the world of Tolkien, of the Hobbit and of fantasy. Always at the X of in depth analysis, because X indicates the spot one has to dig to find the treasure, we find the series―original for Tempo di Libri―on novels that have risen in the charts without their authors but with the power of their readers: Attending absentees. Stories of success after death, books that have become famous after the death of the person who wrote them. From Kent Haruf (with Eraldo Affinati and Antonio Franchini) to the Uruguayan essayist and playwright Mario Benedetti (with Daria Bignardi and Francesco Piccolo), from the stories of Lucia Berlin, a recently discovered talent (with Caterina Bonvicini, Teresa Ciabatti and Concita De Gregorio) to the novel Il resto di niente (The Remains of Nothing) by Enzo Striano read by Corrado Augias, who daily talks about books on Rai3. Tempo di Libri will be the place where readers may meet many of their favourite authors, whether they are the interpreters of the great season of made in Italy thrillers (the Book Fair will be attended by Biagio Bolocan and Giancarlo Carofiglio, Sandrone Dazieri and Carlo Lucarelli, Marcello Simoni and Hans Tuzzi) or the most talented interpreters of the art of comics (the letter F will see Canadian Guy Delisle, Graziano Frediani, Makkox, Lorenzo Mattotti, Rutu Modan with an exhibition, Vanna Vinci, Zerocalcare). But the Book Fair will also be the venue of special, original meetings in which the contact point between protagonists will provide a simple idea to reach something unexpected. It is the case, under A for Adventure, of the discussion between two astrophysicists, namely the author of the fantasy bestseller Licia Troisi and Sandra Savaglio, portrayed on the cover page of “Time”, Professor in Italy and Researcher at the Max-Planck Institute, and of the conversation between author-astrologer Marco Pesatori and the mathematician Paolo Zellini, about whom Italo Calvino wrote, in his Lezioni americane (Six memos for the next millennium), “Of all the Italian books of recent years, the one I have read the most, reread and mused over is Breve storia dell’infinito (A Brief History of Infinity) by Paolo Zellini.” An original pair is also formed by Luis Sepúlveda and Carlo Petrini, who will compare notes with the public on the themes of sustainable development, seeking happiness and discovering simplicity once again in a long and passionate letter to young generations. Another unorthodox pair comprises Marcello Fois and Michela Murgia, protagonists of the scenic reading of Quasi Grazia (Virtually Grace), the work dedicated by Marcello Fois to Grazia Deledda, in which Michela Murgia will play the role of the Sardinian author, Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926, in the Italian tour that will commence in autumn. Other special women who will come to life on the stage of Tempo di Libri are Queen Christina of Sweden, who blossomed in the pages of Dario Fo’s last book which, published after his death, was presented at a meeting-show by his son Jacopo Fo and the Uruguayan poetess Idea Vilariño. She was the focus of a tribute paid to her in the form of a reading by Lucia Calamaro, interpreted by the “Imperfect Mother” Lucia Mascino. Regarding readings and anniversaries, Tempo di Libri and Filippo Timi dedicate to Stephen King, on his 70th birthday, the reading of pages chosen from Shining to celebrate 40 years since its publication. The setting will be fascinatingly staged, and a tricycle will most certainly appear. All this will take place at the letter S of Sangue (blood). But there is more than only shivers. Indeed, oncologist Patrizia Paterlini-Bréchot will talk about how, starting from a certain type of analysis, a test perfected by

the doctor from Modena can provide an early diagnosis, which is crucial in the fight against cancer. All family stories will also be related at the S of Sangue. The voice of scientific research will be heard in interventions by Roberto Burioni, Professor of Microbiology and Virology who, on social networks, is the protagonist of battles in defence of the reasons that make it crucial to vaccinate children; and also in the analysis of innovations, whose outcomes are still not entirely clear, such as, for instance, the revolution of genome editing explored by the journalist Anna Meldolesi. This section will even present theories that are still under discussion (like the “plant revolution” proposed by plant neurobiologist Stefano Mancuso) and forbidden questions, such as the one addressed to mothers at the meeting with the Israeli sociologist Orna Dornath: “If you could travel back in time, would you decide, once again, to become mothers?.” The list of guests is very long. Amidst the stands and halls of the Book Fair, guests may meet famous foreign authors, such as the Syrian poet Adonis (who under the letter E for Estraneo (stranger) will converse about Eastern and Western poetry with Valerio Magrelli); Brit Bennett, who is making his début with a book that has already been sold in many countries, and will be released in Italy for Tempo di Libri; Claire Cameron, with a new novel, whose international preview will be held at the Book Fair; Javier Cercas, Tom Drury, “the greatest American author you have never heard about”, to cite “The Indipendent”; Ildefonso Falcones, Ayelet Gundar Goshen, Lauren Kate, Lesley Lokko, author of successful romance novels and architect committed to post-graduate university training in Africa; Bertil Marklund, Jamie McGuire, Jessica Schiefauer, Sonu Shamdasani, who edited The Red Book by Jung, and Liza Marklund, leading author of Swedish thrillers. Italian narrative will be represented by hundreds of authors, including Eraldo Affinati, Edoardo Albinati, Silvia Avallone, Luca Bianchini, Teresa Ciabatti, Paolo Cognetti, Mauro Corona, Gaia De Beaumont, Mario Desiati, Nadia Fusini, Nicolai Lilin, Chiara Gamberale, Alessia Gazzola, Valerio Massimo Manfredi, Michele Mari, Paola Mastrocola, Beatrice Masini, Giacomo Mazzariol, Federico Moccia, Gianluigi Ricuperati, Alberto Schiavone, Elena Stancanelli, Simona Vinci and Andrea Vitali. The letter Y for YouTube will spotlight young authors of bestsellers who first experienced success on the Web and then on paper (the princess of Wattpad Cristina Chiperi, the YouTuber Sofia Viscardi, and also the creator of the Web series Cose da prof (Matters for a Professor) Enrico Galiano). The Book Fair will also host The Social Book Club, where authors and famous figures of the Web will talk about literature and much more in a conversation in which the public will play the protagonist. The daily appointment at Tempo di Libri will see famous figures taking turns to talk to readers of all ages "on the coach". The space will be created in partnership with Show Reel, and will present figures, such as The Show, The Pozzolis Family (Gianmarco Pozzoli and Alice Mangione), Gianluca Gazzoli, Cami Hawke, Alice Venturi, Daniele Doesn't Matter and many others on the various days. There will be scholars who, spanning sociology and psychology, economics and philosophy, are the best interpreters and narrators of changes in society, like Vittorino Andreoli, Mauro Bonazzi, Leonardo Caffo (who with Martina Donati and Antonio Monaco has organised L’invasione dei Vegani (The Vegan Invasion) at the Book Fair to analyse the phenomenon from the standpoint of publishers and consumers), and also Domenico De Masi, Umberto Galimberti, François Jullien, Vito Mancuso, Massimo Recalcati, Marco Revelli, Luca Ricolfi, Silvia Vegetti Finzi. continues with the stories of journalists (Lirio Abbate, Natalia Aspesi, Diego Bianchi “Zoro”, Francesca Borri, Mario Calabresi, Marco Damilano, Ferruccio de Bortoli, Emiliano Fittipaldi, Luciano Fontana, Corrado Formigli, Sabina Minardi, Benedetta Tobagi), cultural and scientific popularisers (Piero Angela), scientists (Senator for Life Elena Cattaneo, the Scientific Director of Humanitas Alberto Mantovani, physicist Guido Tonelli), and famous chefs (Antonino Cannavacciuolo). Of the many potential combinations stemming from the alphabet of Tempo di Libri, a particularly luxuriant one will be established with the world of music through the presence of several artists, precisely for rock we shall meet Mauro Ermanno Giovanardi (La Crus), Federico Zampaglione (Tiromancino) and French Mathias Malzieu (leader of the rock band Dionysos and author of many novels already translated in Italy), finally reaching the great generator of collective imagination, the Sanremo Festival, represented by its long-standing orchestra director Peppe Vessicchio (in his new role as author of pop eassys) and by the winner of the 2017 edition of the event, Francesco Gabbani who, in a conversation with Elena Stancanelli and Leonardo Colombati―former author of Storia della canzone italiana (History of Italian song)―will interpret the music revolution he personally represents at the meeting Se questo è un Karma (If this is karma). Directly referring to the history of books, the Book Fair will host a stand of antique books curated by Aldus Club, where guests may admire some incunabula and 16th century books. An important space will be dedicated to “obsessive translators” (who specialise in monographies), such as Susanna Basso, Yasmina Melaouah, Anna Nadotti, Maria Teresa Orsi, Fabio Pedone, Enrico Terrinoni, Ada Vigliani and Serena Vitale. Riccardo Falcinelli and Evelina Santangelo will talk about translation as a transition between two different alphabets. The meetings will be coordinated by Francesco Pacifico. The Book Fair will also offer the workshop Poetry Slam curated by the Italian Poetry Slam Association (LIPS) and a tournament indovina l’incipit/il brano famoso (guess the first lines/a famous citation), curated by Teatro La Madrugada. Both events will be organised by AIB Lombardia. For those who did not appreciate the end of their favourite story, the youth of “Quelli del Sabato”, a voluntary workers association for the disabled, have created their first book C’era una svolta - 18 favole con un finale diverso (Once upon a time – 18 fairy tales with a different ending) in partnership with 18 professional authors. The book will be launched at the Book Fair. Lombardy Region will participate in the event with its own stand, proposing several activities and covering the entire range of cultural production, ensuring visibility and offering ideas for detailed study of the written word, the language of movies and on using social media. To celebrate 23 April, World Book and Copyright Day, Tempo di Libri will host a conference held by the Centro per il libro e la lettura (Centre for books and reading) on how useful reading is for the various age groups. The Italian campaign #ioleggoperché 2017 (I read because 2017) will also be launched on 23 April.

by Tempo di Libri, a colourful container of suggestions and detailed study designed for young guests to meet leading international figures, such as R.J. Palacio, author of the global bestseller Wonder, whose movie adaptation is about to be released with Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson (the W of Wonder will also be “its” letter of the alphabet); British David Almond, 2010 winner of the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award―he will converse with Pierdomenico Baccalario for I of Imagination; British narrator Aidan Chambers and US comics author Peter Kuper. In an ideal reference to the series Presenti assenti (Attending absentees), focus will centre on Richard Scarry, author and illustrator who has sold over 100 million copies in the world, and whose experience will be described by his son Huck Scarry (at H for Hobbit). There will also be room for Geronimo Stilton, one of the characters children love most. Besides curating a very personal daily press review at the Book Fair, the prize-giving ceremony “La Crosta d'oro” will be dedicated to him. The competition organised by Piemme and TV Sorrisi e Canzoni envisages reading his tale that readers like best. But at Tempo di Libri a leading role will also be played by the rhymes of Bruno Tognolini (interviewed by Vivian Lamarque), the sports stories of journalist Luigi Garlando, the voyage of discovery of science with astrophysicist Marco Bersanelli and of innovation with the founder of Milan’a first Fablab, Massimo Temporelli. Adventure will be plentiful, for instance, at the meeting with Elisabetta Gnone, creator of the popular series W.I.T.C.H. (and of many other successful stories). However, children will also be led to rougher scenarios, such as the Great War, the central theme of the show during which Luigi Dal Cin will reflect on the tragic effect of war on children (a core topic today as images of Aleppo destroyed by civil war are spreading). At Tempo di Libri children may also test their creative skills in a series of interactive workshops. They will play with typography (ABiCiDi), with the alphabet (Dire Fare Ballare (Say-do-dance)), with science (Darwin spiegato facile facile (Darwin explained easy easy)... even with Pokémon!), and with the challenges of modern communication (Cacciatori di bufale (Fake news hunters)). The partnership between the Book Fair and Lucca Comics & Games, among others, will ensure the presence of fantasy, video games and comics. There will be workshops organised by Focus Junior, Sale&Pepe, Donna Moderna and in partnership with the editorial board of Topolino, and workshops held to introduce the very young to the world that awaits them by making room for the alternation of school and work. More initiatives will highlight debutants, new authors, protagonists of the meetings Esordisco!, but also new readers. They will be the focus of initiatives proposed in partnership with Nati per leggere (Born to read). Indeed, Tempo di Libri will offer a dedicated area for tiny tots, where voluntary workers will teach parents the art of reading aloud with their children. Moreover, a Decalogue will be proposed with the 10 basic rules required to develop a passion for reading in children. Other initiatives designed to enhance the entertaining and stimulating experience of the Book Fair include Il Passaporto dei Viaggiatori Immaginari (The passport of imaginary travellers), a personalised ID card that will allow guests to collect up to 72 stamps for 72 objects, events, meetings they have attended, and Animali Reali e Dove Trovarli (Real life animals and where to find them), with a daily search for a different animal, discovering that at times reality is more amazing than one imagines. Tempo di Libri is also for universities. On Thursday, 20 April, Quante università possibili. Processo all’università (How many possible universities. A case against universities), will be the special event with an American-style court case and a people’s jury comprising university students present in the public. On Wednesday, 19 April, the public interested may participate in the presentation of the main university master’s degrees in publishing sectors. Above all participants will have the opportunity to compare notes with those who have already followed the courses and, hence, have a personal experience to share. Always on Friday, there will be a meeting of experts in trade fair organisation and students from university master’s degrees in publishing to explain what lies behind the scenes of the organisation of a great trade fair dedicated to readers, books and reading, before their visit to the pavilions.

The programme for professionals Addressing all readers signifies reasoning on all forms of reading. And this is what Tempo di Libri will do from the very first day of the Book Fair. The professional programme includes a conference to present an innovative study organised by Pepe Research and designed by AIE, following indications provided by its Innovation Team. The study centred on reading habits in 2017, from paper to e-books, from comics to graphic novels, from audio books to apps, from traditional reading groups to modern online communities. An overall view to photograph, analyse and comment on editorial consumption on the morrow of the digital revolution. Recorded under X, which in the special alphabet of Tempo di Libri also indicates readers, this appointment will be the first of a series of detailed studies that will enlarge on the entire publishing line. The second day will discuss National statistics Institute Istat surveys and how complicated it is to monitor ongoing changes in the habits of citizens today (Identikit del lettore di libri (Profile of book readers) and Chi ci ha abbandonato? Identikit delle persone che dichiarano di aver smesso di leggere (Who has abandoned us? Profile of people who say they have stopped reading)). The third day will focus on relations between imports and exports. The fourth day will discuss the role of independent bookstores in Italy, which are experiencing a period of considerable transformation in their way of being a shop that offers books and culture. The transversal gaze of the Book Fair will be confirmed by the approach to the book market, whose many segments will be analysed with Nielsen, precisely the sector of bookstores will be explored by a partnership between the Italian Association of Publishers (AIE) and the Italian Booksellers’ Association (ALI), while the discussion on religious publications will be based on the 6th report on Catholic publishers produced by the Italian Union of Catholic Publishers and Booksellers (UELCI). Travel guides and books will be explored by Nielsen and Touring Club Italia. Moreover, the progress of Italian narrative, of bestsellers, of e-books and of sectors that best merge with the digital transformation will also be considered. Themes discussed at Tempo di Libri will be many. Libraries and innovation, management of copyright and the need to enhance the international features of the Italian offer will be compared and analysed. Traditional professions, such as the translator, and less known but essential professions, such as the editorial reviewer, will be discussed. Finally, many events will be based on the convergence and comparison of books and other languages of the Italian publishing scene.

Regarding libraries, the Milan Library System, in partnership with the Metropolitan Marketing Administration of the Milan Municipality and with the Metropolitan City’s Library Systems, will organise the Future library at Tempo di Libri to offer guests an opportunity to experiment with some projects and services. The library will be integrated by the presence of an institutional stand of the Milan Municipality. The extraordinary potential of the partnership between tradition and innovation, between human sciences and technology will be witnessed by the story of the translation process of the Babylonian Talmud, which was commenced by the publisher La Giuntina in cooperation with the Istituto Linguistico Computazionale di Pisa (Linguistic Computational Institute of Pisa). Instead, four special events reveal the close relations established between Tempo di Libri and professional associations involved in the publishing scene. The Book Fair will host the Italian assembly of ALI and the annual meetings of both UELCI and Ibby Italia (International Board on Books for Young People). And also the meeting of Filiera della carta (Paper Production Line) comprising seven entrepreneurial associations, namely Acimga, Aie, Argi, Asig, Assocarta, Assografici and Fieg, entitled Giornali e libri strumenti di buona informazione e cultura. Le proposte della filiera (Newspapers and books, tools of good information and culture. The proposals of the production line), which has moved its traditional Roman conference to Tempo di libri.

Digital citizenship at Tempo di Libri

The 27th letter of the alphabet of Tempo di Libri is the @ of digital. A letter, whose action will differ from the others by contaminating stands, meetings and the atmosphere at the Book Fair. Hence, the digital programme will not have a reserved area, but will be a widespread presence at the Book Fair to promote the idea that publishing firms are now the protagonists of the revolution in progress. A revolution that is not only industrial but, especially, cultural (consider how our way of reading, writing and publishing is changing through instruments, such as smartphones, e-readers, tablets, and the multitude of apps), will be discussed at Tempo di Libri by underscoring the aspects of digital citizenship with the Observatory on Digital Confines (OCD) with the presentation of an original survey designed by AIE as indicated by its Innovation Team and implemented in partnership with Pepe Research, on the changes the various reading modes have undergone in Italy. The digital programme of the Book Fair, highlighted by the tag @, envisages some daily strips. Letture al buio (Reading in the dark), curated by Fondazione LIA: the blind will daily take it in turns with the authors to read a book aloud, showing how technological solutions can reverse stereotypes. The latter is designed to involve readers, and is Tempo di Libri‘s contribution to Aldus, the European network of book fairs.

Festivals, reviews, awards and... recipes

Factors that underpin the extensive variety of Tempo di Libri‘s proposal include the large number of cooperative agreements and partnerships entered into by the Book Fair with other leading entities of the Italian publishing and cultural industry. Starting from festivals. Some of the major events on the Italian scene will make room for Tempo di Libri, ranging from Lucca Comics & Games, the landmark for fantasy, comics and video games, to Isola delle Storie – Festival Letterario di Gavoi (Island of Stories – Literature Festival of Gavoi), whose chairman Marcello Fois will hold one meeting a day to present new Italian authors. This format is typical of Isola delle Storie and has been adopted to design all other meetings organised with festivals to enable guests at Tempo di Libri to provide insight into other events of Italian excellence. Hence the Festival della Mente (Festival of the Mind) in Sarzana will organise two events, one with psychoanalyst Massimo Recalcati (K for Kindergarten) and one with Matteo Nucci and Valentina Carnelutti (U for Uomini (men), in this case, the male heroes of Homer). pordenonelegge will propose two conversations, specifically under S for Sangue (blood), I personaggi che ritornano (Characters returning), Alberto Garlini, author and curator of the festival, will interview Maurizio de Giovanni, Gianrico Carofiglio and Giancarlo De Cataldo, and under Q for Quanto (How many) – Quante scuole? (How many schools?) Gian Mario Villalta, author and curator of the festival, will introduce Benedetta Tobagi and Eraldo Affinati, and later Viviane Lamarque and Milo de Angelis. The Book Fair will also host two History Lessons, a preview for Tempo di Libri, with Vittorio Vidotto speaking of The history of Italy in one hundred pictures from 1860 to 1918, and Emilio Gentile’s presentation of The history of Italy in one hundred pictures from 1919 to 1943. In depth presentations at the children’s festival Mare di Libri, at Letterature Festival Internazionale di Roma, scrittorincittà, Leggermente, Libero di Scrivere and Festival degli Scrittori – Premio Von Rezzori, with a lesson on the letters of the alphabet held by Andrew Sean Greer. The association between Tempo di Libri and literary prizes will be underscored by the presentation of the twelve books that will compete for the Strega Prize 2017. An extensive choice of magazines and websites will contribute to the Book Fair’s programme. di Libri, occupying a surface area of over 700 m2 at the Book Fair. Authors, poets, essayists, photographers, illustrators, journalists. At Casa Corriere the public can daily meet the people who produce Corriere della Sera and its supplements, particularly the authors who weekly sign la Lettura. Meetings and workshops on Visual data will be held at the stand, along with discussions on Data Journalism. The public will have the opportunity to converse with artists who design illustrations and graphic novels only for la Lettura. The Corriere will also organise a debate on Le mappe del sapere (Knowledge maps), enlarging on the role of infographics and visual data, and a debate on Gli scrittori della Lettura: dal romanzo al giornale (The authors of la Lettura: from novel to newspaper). Robinson, Repubblica’s cultural insert, will attend Tempo di Libri with a stand of its own to meet readers, describe how the pages are conceived and designed every week, and converse with the authors. The stand will host interactive charts, creative graphic lessons and meetings with students. Instead, in other areas of the Book Fair Robinson will organise a series of debates on our language with authors, journalists and academics of the Crusca. One of them will be entitled Esame generale di italiano: quanto lo conosciamo davvero? (General Italian examination, how much do we actually know it?). The Book Fair will also consider one of the most famous Italian cultural traditions that is appreciated (and envied) worldwide, food. A unique heritage that stems from centuries of traditions, innovations and special bonds with the land. It will be celebrated in a dedicated section

entitled Tempo di Libri A Tavola. The Book Fair will allocate 700 m2 to superior quality Italian wine and gastronomy. There will be two kitchens equipped to host show cooking, workshops and other event formats centred on taste and flavour. The first kitchen will be open to the public with famous chefs, experts in wine and gastronomy and TV stars; the second will, instead, be a workshop with reservations for access, and here visitors may directly test their skills at the stove. The workshops will be dedicated both to schools and families. Meetings that develop the topic of coffee will be held at the De’Longhi Coffee Lounge, others will be organised by LAGO (involving the journalist Anna Prandoni and the Academy of Gualtiero Marchesi), and yet others will be proposed by leading names that appear on specialised publications, with guests such as Michelin-star chefs Andrea Berton and Davide Oldani, besides Red Canzian, Stefano Caffarri and Valerio Braschi, winner of the 6th edition of MasterChef Italia.

It is designed to provide a unique occasion to exchange ideas and contact information, both for leading publishers and for medium and small independent publishers. The MIRC will makes use of the new contacts established and the consolidated ones to promote an increase in sales volumes of publishing rights for Italian titles abroad. foreign, who wish to meet to negotiate publishing rights and explore new opportunities in terms of both mutual relations and the market. 32 countries involved, over 350 foreign publishing firms and over 80 literary agents for 3,500 events involving rights managers, publishers, literary agents and scouts. These are the numbers that better than others describe the international exchange offered by Tempo di Libri. Furthermore, all participants can make use of an online appointments diary through the multilingual matchmaking platform b.square, stating availability and appointments they wish to attend, thus automatically generating an agenda with 30-minute work sessions.

Fuori Tempo di Libri (Outside Tempo di Libri)

The partnership between Tempo di Libri and the Milan Municipality will ensure that relations with the city are very special. The Book Fair’s general programme has dedicated the letter M to the city, presenting little significant stories, such as that of Lidia Cova, the very first person to subscribe to Piccolo Teatro, and the protagonist of a meeting with Mauro Pescio of Pascal (Radio2) and Alberto Rollo. An extensive series of events will take place outside the Book Fair, animating cafés, bookstores and other venues of the city, thus enabling both guests and citizens to explore an innovative approach to the experience of the Book Fair, and to celebrate their passion for books and reading. Even initiatives organised outside the Book Fair’s premises will follow the alphabet system without, however, proposing the same events that appear in the general programme. Something new will always be proposed, such as, for instance, Diego Bianchi “Zoro” with his Zoro Live and the entire band of Gazebo from Rai3; the cycle of events hosted by Teatro Elfo (in partnership with Ad alta voce of Radio 3), centred on four exceptional “Milanese” novels, precisely I milanesi uccidono il sabato (Milanese kill on Saturday) by Giorgio Scerbanenco, Il Ponte della Ghisolfa (The Ghisolfa Bridge) by Giovanni Testori, Adalgisa by Carlo Emilio Gadda and Miracolo a Milano (Miracle in Milan) (a movie by Vittorio De Sica, based on Cesare Zavattini’s Totò il buono (Totò the Good Man)). And again, the initiatives launched by Rivista Studio in cafés in the city, those sponsored by the Swiss Centre (the meeting between Chiara Valerio and the author Fleur Jaeggy), literary dinners with mandatory reservation organised by GEMS (like the “charity” one with La Pina, scheduled for 18 April at Wicky’s as a preview of Fuori Tempo di Libri–she will also attend the Book Fair to describe her Grand Tour in Japan, or other meetings with Andrea Vitali, Clara Sánchez, Federico Moccia, Alessia Gazzola, Wulf Dorn), partnerships with RadioCity, l'Osteria del Treno, events involving the Conservatorio (Milan School of Music), the Planetarium and the Museum of Science and the extraordinary evening opening hours of bookstores, associations, museums and libraries. In partnership with the Municipality of Milan, the 26 Libraries of the Milan Library System will become Libraries of words, each adopting a letter of the alphabet and developing it into a programme of meetings and initiatives. Moreover, in the framework of “Milan’s pact for reading”, the alliance between the Milan Municipality, BookCity Milano, schools, publishers, booksellers and librarians to promote the book and reading, on 22 April at 06.30 pm voluntary readers will gather in the historical garden of Palazzo Sormani, the site of the Central Municipal Library, for a great collective party with readings, music and a surprise. And since Tempo di Libri will make the most of spring, why not exploit bicycles to disseminate the habit of reading? the CISL of Milan and backed by the Milan Library System. Youngsters will be the messengers of books for those who find it difficult to physically get to a library or a bookstore. Some city libraries will receive the book loan request, deliver the requested publication and collect a video story of opinions, reviews and readings aloud. At Fuori Tempo di Libri several bookstores will be open in the evening, and will organise special events for project È tempo di librai (It is time for booksellers). The project counts on the participation of Mondadori Store, laFeltrinelli, Libreria Internazionale Hoepli, Libreria delle donne and LIM - Librerie Indipendenti Milano. Instead, for World Earth Day on 22 April, Tiziano Fratus and Franco Michieli, accompanied by Roberto Mantovani, will set off from the Indro Montanelli Gardens to take turns in the Urban Walk: relay race for the Earth. The natural world that lies concealed in our cities, accompanying the readers in a journey of discovery of natural elements that are also present in the city. There is also a close partnership with RadioCity. From Friday, 21 April to Sunday 23 April, at the UniCredit Pavilion (Ppiazza Gae Aulenti, with facilities installed by courtesy of Fiera Milano), the public can meet up with the national and local radio broadcasters, the most significant Radios from Europe and from the world, the radios of universities and Web radios. During these three days the contents of Tempo di Libri and of RadioCity will merge and be mutually enriched with interviews on books, guests at the Book Fair and live broadcasts on all radio stations participating in the event. Besides, on Sunday, 23 April, for the World Book and Copyright Day, a large reading marathon will be the final celebration by RadioCity and Tempo di Libri. Inaugurated by the Mayor of Amatrice, it will be dedicated to populations in Central Italy who suffered the earthquake. Guests will include authors, DJs, singers and artists who will perform on stage. The effect of Tempo di Libri will finally also be seen on public transport with the rebate rates offered by Trenord, ATM and Trenitalia for all those who have the admission ticket to the Book Fair. For Tempo di Libri, Milano Linate and Milano Malpensa will become the first Italian airports to promote BookCrossing, in partnership with the AIE. At the gates and bag drop-off and collection areas of the Milanese airports, passengers can leave a book and pick up another one from the dedicated bookcases made of recycled corrugated cardboard. And all Book Fair-related initiatives will not be confined to the city. Indeed, Fuori Tempo di Libri crosses the borders of Milan, involving the Municipality of Rho, the Municipality of Sesto San Giovanni and the Municipality of Monza, with the Local Authority for Cultural Policies. During the two weeks prior to the Book Fair, activities on social networks will grow through the campaign È Tempo di Leggere (It is time to read) that invites everybody to spend at least one hour a day reading a book and sharing their favourite incipit. Social mobilisation will peak on 19-23 April with an interactive story, day by day, curated by Gaja Cenciarelli, Giacomo Mazzariol and Ginevra Lamberti. The official journal of the event will be the Giornale della Libreria daily, an actual four-page newspaper that will describe, every morning, the ‘must’ events both at the Book Fair and in venues outside its premises.
