    its history is no doubt ancient, as I have attempted, and 1

    trust succes sfully, to show in the foregoing pa ges, although

    I have no authenti c source from which to d ate it s com-

    going p ages, and also from Dr. Henry's his tory, we find

    o u s e d i f i c e s . Henc e, the Maso ns we re greatly favoured by

    the Popes, who granted t hem many privileges, in'o rder to,

    encourage the arts a nd augment t heir numbers . In t h o s e

    t ime s it is ne e dl e s s to say, th a t such en c o urag emen t from

    the heads o f the church must have been of great benefit to

    t h e f r a t e r n i t y . In co nfirmation of which, Dr . Henry quot es ;
