Letter from Colin

Dear Parents, Dunhurst is back to its wonderful, colourful self. I must say, during the holidays, the school felt very empty without the usual laughter and sounds of happy children interacting with each other. I have enjoyed hearing all about the holiday antics, which have been happening over the Christmas break. This term is set to be full of exciting opportunities. Please do take the time to follow up on Twitter and to read the Friday Report, which is sent out every Friday afternoon. These are up-to-date ways of communicating what is going on here at Dunhurst.

Thought of the week

Family supper debate, just for fun! What colour would a zebra be if you took its stripes off?

The week that was…

During the first assembly of the spring term, I talked about super heroes. I am not talking about Superman and Wonder Woman (although I did mention them), I mean real super heroes, those people who risk their lives whilst saving others. (The emergency services and armed forces) I encouraged the children to support this fantastic campaign.

https://www.youareawesome.org.uk/ The School Council met on Tuesday, the first of 2019. It was great to hear the creative juices flowing with plenty of ideas and follow up of actions to make Dunhurst an even better school. New Council elections for the remainder of the year occur after half term. In Outdoor Work (ODW), pupils dusted down the bird boxes, delivered a shed and started clearing out old, dead wood to add to the bonfire, creating an enriching outdoor learning environment. On Wednesday, sadly, the stunning blue sky in the morning disappeared and we had heavy grey skies, but, all who took part in hockey training and matches showed good team spirit and determination. This term promises to be filled with sporting skill and some good excellent scores lines - a great start to fixtures this year. Block 2 enjoyed an inspirational Drawing Workshop with Fran Richardson on Thursday. When I popped in to see how they were getting on it was a hive of activity with Fran and Susan (Head of Art and Design). The Blocks’ play rehearsals are well underway. There is a busy weekend of rehearsals ahead, leading up to the performances, at the end of next week. Please support the musicians and performers by coming to the performance, written by Simon, ‘Blood, Bread & Bones’. Details of times and dates of performances are below . This afternoon we welcome ‘Chaplin Band’ for JAW in the Well at Dunhurst.

NEWS FROM OUTDOOR WORK

Every year without fail, my new year’s resolution is to find more time to read – I’m sure many of you also have the same target! With that in mind, in the Friday Report this half term, I will be sharing two book recommendations a week; one for adults, one for children. All will have an ODW theme; nature, conservation, horticulture etc. Each book reviewed will be available to borrow from ODW (although I probably only have one copy of it!). We have built up a lovely collection of books in ODW, and add to it on a regular basis – the children are very welcome to borrow them any time. If you read any of them – let me know what you think! I’d also love to hear your recommendations! A Sting in the Tale by Dave Goulson I love bees. This is the first book about bees that I read, and it’s brilliant. Dave Goulson has studied them all his life, and published over 190 scientific articles about bees and other insects. This is a wonderfully informative read that recounts many of his “adventures with bumblebees”. I thought that 250 pages of stories about bees might get a bit tedious, but Goulson is so passionate about the subject – and it’s superbly written. Also by the author: A Buzz in the Meadow & Bee Quest

The Animals of Farthing Wood by Colin Dann

This is the first “big book” that I ever read. It’s the story of a group of woodland animals who must flee their home as it is

being bulldozed by developers. Toad tells them about a nature reserve called White Deer Park, and they decide to

the make the long (and often dangerous) journey together. I remember choosing it from the school library when I was in

Year 4. I picked it partly because it had animals on the cover, but mostly because it was the thickest book on the shelf and

I thought it would impress my teacher (I was in love with Mrs. Rowlands at the time). It took me ages. But I loved it.

My friend and I then raced each other to see who could read the most Colin Dann books! I am just about to read it

to my 7 year old daughter and I can’t wait!

Also by the author: there are lots of books in the Farthing Wood series though none as good as the first (I think he was milking it a bit to be honest). But other

enjoyable “non-Farthing Wood” stories include Just Nuffin, The Beach Dogs & King of the Vagabonds.

MATCH REPORTS Boys’ Hockey With no matches for the boys this week, the U11 and U13 teams were involved in a pre-season training session and trial. It was great to see such great attendance and the astro at capacity with various games going on. There was a huge amount of talent on show and we look forward to a successful season ahead. Will

U13A Girls’ Hockey v Prebendal ( W 8-0) What a great way to start this term of Hockey fixtures. The girls were strong from the off and took a 3-0 lead into half time with goals from Sage (2) and Pandora. The second half we played players in different positions to find out our best formation and Rebekah went up front. This proved to be a success as Rebekah scored 3 goals within 5 minutes. One of the goals was struck from the top of the D into the left hand corner - a great strike. Izzy R moved from defence to attack and did really well receiving the ball from Jazzi and Sage and was unlucky not to score more than the one goal. Izzy’s goal was struck with power from the top of the D and into the right hand corner of the goal. Sage got on the score sheet again, with a 1-on-1 with the keeper and hit it through the GK’s legs. Rebekah and Sage then moved to defence, meaning that Jazzi had a go on the wing and grew in confidence when in possession of the ball and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. Saffi took up some great positions in the D but, unfortunately, the GK and defenders were strong and made some vital tackles. Well done to Sage for being named the Bee’s Knees. A great start to the fixtures campaign and this bodes well for the tournament next week. Well done! U13B Girls’ Hockey v Prebendal ( W 7-2) This game saw the girls grow in confidence during the match. At first they were tentative on the ball and went 1-0 down but with more encouragement they flourished. Posy was first on the score sheet, scoring a great shot in the right hand corner of the goal. At half time it was 1-1. The girls started the second half with gusto and Nell was strong on the wing, where she showed her determination to win the ball. This was fruitful for Nell as she scored 3 goals! Izzy was strong in midfield and helped get the ball from defence to attack. In the D, Izzy was on point and scored 2 goals. Posy scored again and showed that she is a natural striker as, whenever she received the ball, her first instinct was to drive towards the goal. Grace made some strong tackles in midfield and fed the ball well out wide. Iris did not stop running the whole game and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. Maddie was the rock of the defence, her composure when in possession of the ball was first class. Well done to Izzy G and Eliza in defence, their marking and intercepting was superb. Well done all! THE SWIMMING POOL

We are delighted to see the swimming pool re-open this week. Huge amounts of work has gone into making required structural and functional repairs and improvements as well as updating the cosmetic appearance. It now looks fantastic and will be heavily used. Please do pop down to have a look. We will be making full use of the pool for both PE lessons and activities and look forward to hosting our first gala here on Monday 11th February (Groups v Boundary Oak and Meoncross). Will U10 Girls’ Hockey v Portsmouth High (D 1-1) On Wednesday 9th January, the U10 Hockey team prepared to play their first match of the season against Portsmouth High. It was a sunny afternoon, but cold, so warming up was key. Valentina, as captain, did the toss and chose first push-back. Initially, all the girls were a little nervous, but soon relaxed and began to enjoy the match. Millie and Brooke pushed forward and their efforts were rewarded with a fantastic goal from Marlie. The team were delighted and keen to score again, however PHS were the ones to change the run of play when they scored in their next attacking phase. Mattie and Poppy were magnificent in defence, along with Emily and Mollie. At half time the score was 1-1. The team talk revolved around how the girls could win ball from their opposition, using stronger tackles and keeping low. Also trying to stay in formation would spread the game and allow everyone a better view of where to pass. In the second half, the standard of play improved from both teams. It was end-to-end excitement, but nobody could score. Emily D did a couple of crucial tackles in the defending D. Vava and Bella fought hard in attack, but, despite a couple of corners, the score remained 1-1. A great game to begin the term. Lots to work to do, but a really positive way to begin 2019. Huge congratulations to Brooke, who deservedly won the ‘Bee’s Knees’ for outstanding play. Debbie P
