Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

It is certainly good to be home. After two and a half weeks away serving those in

need after the devastating Hurricane Florence assaulted the coasts of North and

South Carolina, it is indeed good to be back home—with my family and with my

church family.

I’d like to take the time to tell you about some of the ministry that took place so

that you might know a bit about what I was doing during my time away. It’s also

important for you to hear about the things that happen in my military ministry

because without you and the support from this congregation, I wouldn’t be able

to serve in that capacity. It is your generosity in sharing your pastor with the

South Carolina Army National Guard that makes this happen. And because of

this partnership, it allows the ministry of this congregation to spread throughout

another state and to countless individuals through the work that I’m called to do

on your behalf.

Primarily, I function as a staff officer on the commander’s special staff, where

my role is to perform or advise. I perform religious functions such as worship

and bible studies for Soldiers who identify as Christian. For Soldiers who are of a

different faith group, I provide resources and time for them to practice their

faith as protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United

States. As an advisor to the commander, I am responsible for matters pertaining

to ethics, morals, morale, and the impact of religion on the unit’s operation.

The way this works in an operation where we’re supporting the recovery from a

hurricane and flooding is a bit different, as this isn’t a wartime mission. Instead,

we work alongside folks like the Department of Transportation, local law

enforcement agencies, and even local churches to support the recovery efforts.

In my role as a chaplain, I work with local congregations to support Soldiers

while they work. I continuously monitor the work sites and check in to see how

things are going and that Soldiers have the things they need to be successful. I

do a lot of counseling with Soldiers and civilians who are involved in incidents

where there is loss of life or serious injuries.

Page 3: The Friendly Visitor - Amazon S3...Capital Improvement fundraiser to get budget up to $50,000.00--similar to the fundraiser we did for the organ fund with a visual chart for progress

All in all, I counseled 67 Soldiers, 34 civilians, responded to three deaths, while

covering a 7 county area and close to 2,000 Soldiers. It was a really busy time—

my shortest duty day was 18 hours.

This work—this ministry—is able to be done because of you. And I don’t want us

to forget that. We as a congregation get to support so many different ministries

by the ways that we give of ourselves here in the local congregation—many times

our ministries impact people we’ll never know or see, but even in the unknown

and unfamiliar, God is at work in this world through you.

Bless you, my friends, for your love, support, and prayers for all those who have

been affected by the recent hurricane and flooding.

May peace be our journey,

Pastor Greg

Volunteer Opportunity Spotlight

Centro Latino’s afterschool tutoring program is in full swing. It

is wonderful to see a bright and happy group of children

utilizing the basement of our building. The hours of the

program are 3:00PM - 6:00PM Monday through Thursday. The

children have a snack when they arrive, so tutoring usually

begins around 3:30. Most students have finished their

homework by 5:30 and are then allowed to play until their

parents arrive. So most days, volunteers are only helping for

about two hours. Students from LRU work each day alongside

community volunteers. Volunteers can work whatever days are

convenient for them and they can work with whatever age child

they prefer. Basically you help the child do their homework and

listen to them read for twenty minutes. The one on one attention

is so important and helpful for these children. They all speak

English and are eager to learn. If you are interested in getting

involved, contact the church office.

Little Something Extra for September collected $158 for the Trinity Village

Activity Fund. In July and August $844 was collected for school supplies for

Murray and St. Stephen’s Elementary Schools. Teachers give so much of their

own time and money so I’m sure all you did was appreciated.

October is the month to help the Women’s Group with Project Hope. This

money will be used to help buy food, clothing and things needed for the give

away on December 1st. Also the Angel Tree in November will be for toys that

we will use for Project Hope. Each Angel will have an age for a girl or boy to

pick toys for. Social Ministry wants to thank you the congregation for all you

do. We are your committee and try to do your work.

God’s Work, Our Hands - September 9th

This was a great success this year. Murray and St. Stephens’s Elementary

received some much needed landscaping work. The Hospice House families

and staff received a wonderful lunch. The Scout Hut had a final cleaning out.

Dennis Eckard worked thru the summer cleaning out personal information of

boys and families as well as cleaning out the downstairs. On this Sunday a

group of volunteers cleaned out the upstairs. At 2:00 in the afternoon, Choir

members as well as many other volunteers went to sing and serve homemade

ice cream to the residents of Trinity Village. It was a wrapped up with a dinner

back at the church. Pastor Greg visited all the sites and showed a video of all

the work sites.

To: St. Stephen’s ELCA members, especially the women

From: Margaret Yount, leader of Brownie G.S. Troop 10159

I am sure all of you are aware there were no meetings this past

year. It was because no girls registered as Brownies for Troop 10159

even though the available adults did register. Remember the old

saying “all good things have to come to an end sometime”? Well, I tell

you having a Brownie troop was in deed a good thing. But I have

decided to give up being the leader of this troop because of my age

and desire not to drive at night alone. I personally do not know of any

person willing and ready at this time to take over the leadership of

the troop. It was formed in December 1959 by the Lutheran Church

Women at St. Stephen’s.

I could not have been the troop ‘s leader for 57 years without the

help of my parents, co-leaders, troop committee members, cookie

chairpersons, church van drivers, and parents of Brownies helping

with trips and camping outings. Thanks to all who helped in ay way.

Also, thanks for all the things manyof you donated to be used with

the Scout activities.

All the items I collected over the years that were not used has

been cleaned out of the closets and G.S. storage. Another leader took

many items left by the troops that met here over the years to other

troop leaders, the Hickory Resource Center and to the recycling

center.

Thanks to all the parents and grandparents of the girls I enjoyed

having as Brownies in Troop 10159. Also, thank you for the boys and

girls I taught in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many

years. I will enjoy the pictures I have made of all of them as well as

church events. Thanks for all the gifts and love and attention I

received from all the children in my past. Thanks for the plaques I

received from the church as well as the Girl Scout Council that I will

always cherish. I made this my motto many years ago:

Let me be where children are; I’ll never miss a cloud or star

Never miss a stone or flower, if I am with them one small hour

Let me be where children play, for laughter surely runs that way

Let me be where children sing, for there is God’s eternal spring.
