W hen the economic crisis struck a few years ago, the folks who were hit hardest were those families already at the bottom and struggling to survive. And now, they are the slowest to recover too … the unemployment and poverty rates here are TWICE the national average.

That’s why this matching grant is such a blessing. What a great way to make your dollars go TWICE as far in helping these families have a warmer, safer and drier winter.

Please help as generously as you can before December 31.

And THANK YOU for being part of this amazing work to help children and families living in one of the poorest regions of America … for showing the love of God to them … and for bringing hope and help in His precious name.

We are grateful for you and pray God blesses you richly for the generous way you show His love to others through ASP!

“You worked a miracle on my house AND

on my heart!” —rItA, Harlan, KY

im and Heather have three young children, including an infant who was born in August! Heather is a full time college student studying respiratory therapy and Tim is a currently unemployed contractor. They are struggling to pay all of their bills as they pay for Heather’s college education and raise their young children. The outside of their home had OSB, decking boards and even insulation that had been exposed to the elements and ruined. The interior had no floor coverings, though Tim had sanded and painted the subfloor. The bathroom floor was about to cave in due to water damage from the tub plumbing.

ASP volunteers did a radical makeover on both the exterior and interior of their home as we got ready to welcome the new baby. We had come at just the right time for this family! Tim worked outside everyday with the volunteer crews — teaching them how to do different things with his construction background. When we began the work inside, Heather and Tim were elated. All Tim could say was, “You guys have done so much for me! I don’t know how to say thank you!”

By the end of the summer, the third bedroom — as well as the exterior and interior of the home — were ready to welcome a new child. You truly helped this family get back on their feet through your support of ASP!

T Do you remember Teresa who kept the cold out last winter by hanging a blanket over her flimsy storm door — the only one they could afford since her husband had lost his job in the coal mines and her daughter and three grandchildren had moved in? They had started a room addition for the kids — afraid the children would be taken away if they didn’t get the little boy and girls in separate rooms — but had to stop because they had no more money for materials.

Well, this summer ASP not only finished that room addition, but actually made it large enough for two rooms. Now Haley and Megan share a room (they asked us to paint their room purple!) … and Ryan has his own room too which we painted blue! ASP volunteers also dug a ditch behind Teresa’s home to stop the flow of water from going underneath and put up underpinning to keep the house warmer. And yes, you helped us get them a new front door too!

“We’re so grateful for ASP and so thankful the children have their own rooms — it was getting pretty crowded with 6 people in this 2-room mobile home!”

▲ Dennis Bailey is a walking, talking, banjo-, guitar-, and harmonica-playing entertainer living in Breathitt County, KY. Volunteers installed a septic system and first-time bathroom addition. Dennis will long be remembered by the ASP staff and volunteers who served him this summer as he always had a story and a song to share!

▲ Tobi and her grandparents

October “Tobi” Asbury’s mom, Rachel, was recently diagnosed with cancer, forcing a move “back home” to Rachel’s parents so family help would be available during her treatments. ASP volunteers added two rooms to the family home in Tazewell, Virginia, so that Rachel’s brothers would no longer need to sleep in the living room.

2010 – roofing cost for 1 square of shingles was $90/square with a 15 year lifespan2013 – roofing cost for 1 square of tin is $55/square with a 30+ year lifespan

we switched to tin for cost effectiveness and longer-term sustainability. most of the time, costs go up — but here’s one instance where we are actually saving money! According to Dennis Burley, ASP’s Home Repair Coordinator and Safety Officer — “when it comes to long-term cost effectiveness and savings for a family, a roof and insulation are the two best projects we can do for them.”

ASP recently received a 4-star rating (highest possible) from Charity navigator for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency.

✔ Your gift matched by the annual conference!

umC #GivingTuesday is a contrast to the shopping traditions of Black Friday and Cyber monday — and offers an opportunity to start off the holiday season by GIVInG instead of getting, through organizations like ASP that are transforming the world for Christ.

3,346 FAMILIES APPLIED for help this summer … BUt ArE StILL WAItInG for urgent home repairs — some of which include first-time plumbing, water and electrical service.

Will you help us reach as many of these families as possible by giving your most generous gift today?

Helping Hands is an opportunity to be involved in service at times and in ways beyond the traditional volunteer experience. Helping Hands serve as mentors for new volunteer groups, as end of summer construction support, skilled trade support and also general administrative support.

April Sperow hugs her adopted son, Brandon — as dad william looks on. The Sperows are a foster-adoptive family who were served by ASP volunteers in Dickenson County, Virginia, this past summer. Two of the six children they are raising have cerebral palsy. work on their home this summer included a drainage ditch to divert water away from the foundation, replacing the foundation and rebuilding a bathroom floor that was about to cave in.
