DAY 3

Keep River National Park to Timber Creek

What a great part of the country already, this region is full of surprises, and the small town of Timber Creek is no exception. There are some great spots to launch a boat, cruise around, take a few walks or just sit back and enjoy your natural surroundings. Swing in to spots like Big Horse Creek Campground, with a boat ramp, toilet facilities and plenty of space to set up for the night. Or head in to Timber creek and stay at the local caravan park.

While you’re in the area make sure you visit Gregory’s Tree, an important Aboriginal sacred site and registered heritage site. Drive to Nackeroo Lookout for breathtaking views of the area, and walk out on the old Victoria River crossing. If fishing is your thing – this is the perfect place to throw in a line. Remember to Be Crocwise. Don’t forget from October through to March the NT runs the ‘Million Dollar Fish’ competition – so make sure you are registered if you are fishing in this area this time of year!

Optional add on: Bullo River Station

Between Keep River National Park and Timber Creek is the real life working cattle station of Bullo River Station. At Bullo, soak up some luxury, whilst being surrounded by the rugged landscapes of this magical region. Bullo River station offers a grand stay in the homestead with many experiences available such as helicopter flights, Aboriginal rock art tours, cruising, fishing, hiking and other station activities.

Minimum 2 night stays apply.

If hiking is your jam, then you have struck gold in Judbarra National Park – the second largest National Park in the NT (outside of Kakadu). From Timber Creek it’s an easy drive along the Victoria Highway. There are plenty of options for camping throughout this region and lots of places to try out your 4WDing skills. Ensure you are adequately prepared and equipped before attempting any of these 4WD tracks. Please refer to the 4WD track Judbarra/Gregory National Park fact sheet.

The Bullita Stock route is high on the recommendations, the track is tough but well worth it.

Giwining/Flora River Nature Park is a little more 2WD friendly with some great fishing opportunities, generous camping facilities and bush walks.

DAY 10 to 12

Katherine towards Cape Crawford

Option one: From Katherine you have a couple of options for your drive route. If you are prepared for some off-road experiences you can head south to Mataranka (stop here for a dip in the thermal springs and if you have a bit of extra time check out Bitter Springs too) and then head directly east towards Roper Bar. Take your pick of some great camp sites along the way such as Butterfly Springs, Limmen Crossing and Towns River. There are also some fishing and boating opportunities throughout this area, but please remember to Be Crocwise as estuarine (saltwater) crocodiles are present in these areas.

Option two: Your other route option is to travel south from Katherine until you reach Daly Waters (make sure you stop here for cold beverage and check out the paraphernalia) and then head east towards Cape Crawford. (We still recommend you stop in at Mataranka and Bitter Springs for a dip in the hot springs). There are a few road side camps to choose from before you reach Cape Crawford.

Optional add on: Lorella Springs

It’s not every day that drive through the magnificent country of the gulf, so we would highly recommend you take the detour to explore Lorella Springs Wilderness Park. Lorella Springs is a privately owned one-million acre cattle station and wilderness sanctuary. Surrounded by Limmen National park, Aboriginal land and kilometres of Northern Territory coastline, Lorella truly is a piece of Australia you need to see. The road into Lorella can be reached by most vehicles including caravans and campers – but just ring ahead to make sure.

DAY 12 and 13

Cape Crawford (Heartbreak Hotel) to King Ash Bay

The surrounding landscape from Cape Crawford to the QLD border is potentially some of the best of our remote outback in Northern Australia. From Cape Crawford, the Heartbreak Hotel is where it all begins. We highly recommend you take a scenic helicopter flight above the amazing Lost City, comparable to the Bungle Bungles and equally as spectacular.

Head towards Borroloola and for a bit of a detour, travel towards King Ash Bay – especially if you are a keen fisherperson. King Ash Bay has camping and accommodation facilities.

It’s almost time to farewell the NT (until next time). Today, take the road towards the QLD/NT border. Make sure you stock up on supplies at Borroloola as there are minimal opportunities from here.

DAY 12 and 13

Optional add on:

Don’t want to leave? If you are loving the NT so much that you just want more, you can head towards two other family owned stations. Manangoora or Seven Emu Station. Both areas provide self-sufficient 4WD’ers exclusive camping spots. We recommend you phone ahead to ensure accessibility.
