Editorial
L I E B E L E S E R , d i e We l t d e r Mobilität ist im Umbruch: neue Antriebstechnologien und Produktionsverfahren, neue Materialien, künstliche Intelligenz.

DEAR READERS, the world of mobility is changing:
new motor technologies and production processes, new
materials, artificial intelligence. Moreover, there are the
challenges of urbanisation, digitalisation, and increasing-
ly individualised customer needs. The cards have been
reshuffled! A few years ago, it seemed as if all innovations
and trend-setting decisions were being dictated from the
concrete-grey headquarters of an ever-increasing multi-
national conglomerates, but today we see Asian e-mobil-
ity start-ups worth billions, American self-made vision-
aries such as Elon Musk, and European design studios
setting the pace. An industry that has been slumbering for
two decades in the comfortable hibernation of unimagi-
native technocrats has rediscovered its very own quality:
the courage and will to change the world.
It seems evident that in the future the automobile will not
be able to maintain its central role. The Swiss manufactur-
er Quadro Vehicles reveals how new concepts will change
urban mobility in particular. Together with Quadro Vehi-
cles, we’re presenting a project in this special edition (IN-
TERSECTION No. 33 will be released in March) that doesn’t
even have a name at the time of printing. Let’s give it the
code name QV4. A new type of vehicle that distils the best
from the worlds of motorcycles and automobiles, opens
up an entirely new sector and at the same time makes fun
and safe driving possible for everyone.
Thus, this issue celebrates not only tomorrow’s mobility,
but also the visionaries of recent decades, the designers
of the most impressive studies and show cars, the most
innovative and boldest ideas since the Benz Patent Motor
Car Number 1, some of which have been celebrated by
their contemporaries, others mocked or eyed with suspi-
cion. But all of them had the imagination and self-confi-
dence to shape the future!
Have fun with this issue and maybe go for a test drive
with the new QV4!

• The first concept
car in history: with its aerodynamic design, folding headlights, and power
windows, the convertible study developed by design legend Harley J. Earl pre-
dicted the Buick models of the 1940s and 1950s. Because research vehicles by
many manufacturers had an X in their name, Earl, who drove the car himself
for several years, ostensibly came up with the name Y-Job.

surface of just A3 size. The interior of the wide, flat concept car accom-
modated three people seated next to each other. An onboard computer
provided the pilot with information about the vehicle and road.

for a design that adapts to the needs of the driver and traffic situ-
ation. The flexible construction, coated with a silver, translucent
fabric skin, widens at high speeds, for example at the rear and side
skirts for better road handling. Headlights and the engine compart-
ment are released when required. The designers sought to question
classic materials and manufacturing processes and find completely
new approaches.

• A super sports car for the third

of small cracks in the carbon structure. For more charging
cycles, a higher range, and fast charging in the future, su-

When he was still working for Ford, Paolo Gagliardo was the first person to sell a car on the internet. At Abarth, he was responsible for the re-launch of the brand and created the first real community of enthusiastic customers. His “landing” at Quadro Vehicles didn’t surprise me. On the contrary, I thought, “Wow, who better than him to be at the head of a company that produces a vehicle so revolutionary that it doesn’t even have a name?” And, as they say: if a thing has no name, it is a product of the future. And a scooter with four wheels is most definitely the future.

Interviews always begin with a portrait of the intervie-
wee, but Paolo is difficult to define: in Italy, “visionary” is
synonymous with “madman” and innovator has begun to
be used to refer to everyone, including the parking atten-
dant around the corner. “Genius” sounds like someone’s
pulling one over on you. On the other hand, he has done
so many things that I’ve lost count – he’s been the head
of FCA in the EMEA region, as well as for the Lancia and
Chrysler brands, worked in the International Business
Unit of Fiat, worked at Piaggio as Product Development
Worldwide, and, before that, as the head of the marketing
department of Ford and Trenitalia as well. That’s why I’d
try “inquisitive.” Or even “explorer.”
Vincenzo Borgomeo: Do you like this description? Do you recognise yourself in it?Paolo Gagliardo: I would say yes, but if you describe me as
“the first one who sold a car on the internet” – a 1998 Ford
Cougar in Italy – then you’re withholding the addition
“in collaboration with a young, equally curious journalist
called Vincenzo Borgomeo.” We didn’t sell many, just a
few, but it was fun to experiment with it. In the years that

followed, our paths crossed
frequently, and we shared a
mutual energy and appreci-
ation for each other. Today,
twenty years later, we’ve
met again to talk about the
future, because we still have
the same enthusiasm and
curiosity for the new as we
did back then.
After this necessary preli-
minary remark about your
“portrait” of me, I find that I
fully recognise myself in the
description “explorer”: You
can’t forget that I’m from
Palermo on my father’s side
and New York on my mo-
ther’s side. That’s why I’m a
bit of a sailor and a little bit
of a pioneer with the typical
American “can do” mentality.
That’s why I thought that a
revolutionary dreamer com-
pany like Quadro Vehicles
deserves a place in the van-
guard of innovative mobili-
ty. From a business point of
view, what has fascinated
and impressed me was that their product, which is Inter-
national and unique and already available on the market,
is still completely unknown, not understood and barely
distributed. On the other hand it represents a new cate-
gory and is a potential game changer for the stressed-out
modern city dweller.
So, unrealised but great potential. What strategic guidelines will the company follow in the near future? They’re very simple. We’ve have planned four phases.
First, we will explain our new concept of mobility to peo-
ple in an understandable way and overcome their mis-
trust of the new. Our vehicle promises the best of both the
motorcycle and car worlds. We will make the product and
the advantages of the four tilting wheels known by high-
lighting the problems people have, because they are our
starting point: stagnant traffic, especially in the mornings
and after office hours, areas of reduced traffic, car parks.
Fuel consumption. Bad roads, weather conditions, strikes,
and so on. Our vehicle, or rather our concept of mobility,
solves many of these problems. You drive and park it like
a scooter, it tilts up to 45 degrees around curves, has the
manoeuvrability typical of scooters, and also offers the
usual driving pleasure of open two-wheeled vehicles. At
the same time, it is safer on bad and regular roads, on wet
roads or off-road, and it has in addition a braking system
like a car because it has four wheels. Then, thanks to our
pneumatic suspension HTSTM – proprietary and patented
Swiss technology – on the front and rear wheels, as well
as the rear-wheel drive with double V-belt, it is as comfor-
table and versatile as a car. It remains “standing” at inter-
sections and doesn’t require a stand when parking. You
can drive it all over Europe with your B-driving license.
Secondly, we will create a new category of product, the
name of which will be launched in Geneva. For the mo-
ment we will call it QV4. Thirdly, we will develop the QV4
in different directions. We are a Swiss company, and the-
refore, at the Geneva Motor Show, we will have the world-
wide premiere of the new vehicle with 400 cc displace-
ment, which will be available starting in May, in addition
to the 350 cc version currently available on the market.
We will also be presenting a new zero-emission electric
vehicle, the E-QV4, which will be available in 2019 – and
We have defined innovative design guidelines that embody safety, agility, and light-ness to find the
„perfect dress“ for our unique HTSTM
system. Design and technology merge into an innovative mobility concept.

Mein derzeitiger Lieblingssatz in dieser Phase stammt von Winston Churchill: „The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.“
will be more than just the “vegan” brother of the 400 cc.
We also have a QV4 “professional” line where we let our
customers’ requests guide us, as well as special series,
which, let’s say, are a little more extreme.
Fourth, the driving experience and not the test-drive: the
QV4 EXPERIENCE. QV4 is a new and unique product. I
could go on and on explaining my emotions while driving
it in detail, but I would not be able to convey something
really concrete, because it is simply a completely different
feeling than driving a car or a scooter. And it’s addictive:
the longer you drive it, the more you like the vehicle. In
order to convey all this, we will create different and ex-
tended driving experiences. Depending on the mobility
experience customers have had before, they can test how
fun it is to drive, as well as the increased safety, with the
QV4 EXPERIENCES and experience it in a straightforward
and concrete way. It’s much more than a “traditional”
test drive. That is the synthesis of strategy. But there are
many more things being planned: a joint venture with
SYM, which will bring us new products with the Nuvion
brand next year, the upgrading of our HTSTM. In commer-
cial terms, soon we’ll launch a universal blog on advan-
ced mobility. Finally, we’ll soon launch true e-commerce:
the QV4 STORE, which even offers home delivery of the
vehicle. There is so much that is going to happen.
Using the customer’s problems as a starting point is a great idea. In the mobility sector, scooters and cars are usually only shown on deserted plains or dreamlike landscapes in the Dolomites. When are we going to talk about reality?(laughs) Let’s say – reality from our point of view, based
on Swiss specificity and precision. Everyone who com-
mutes to work and travels by car or scooter in Zurich,
Milan, Rome, Paris, Madrid, Berlin, or London knows what
the problem is. Large European cities are simply designed
for smaller modes of transportation and vehicles. Today,
urban and suburban mobility has become hell on earth,
while, at the same time, people are required to be more
mobile than ever before. This is probably one of the most
tangible stress factors in modern life.
Ein neues Mobi-litätskonzept braucht auch ein neues Konzept für den Kunden-service: ein fort-schritt l iches und maßgeschneider-tes 360-Grad-Kun-denerlebnis. When you were still at Abarth’s, you once said, “If anyone asks me how much a 595 consumes, I won’t answer them because they obviously didn‘t understand anything about the product and its strategy.” Which question about the QV4 would you refuse to answer? For example, the question of complete roofing like a small
car. Not because it would be a bad idea from the custo-
mer’s point of view, but because we must remain true to
the underlying concept of the QV4. It is a third solution
between car and motorcycle; that is to say, if we were to
make it too much of a “car,” it would become heavier, and
the concept would no longer work. It is better to develop a
lightweight and innovative additional cover that does not
compromise the promised manoeuvrability. The situation
is quite different when we talk about reverse gear, an ele-
ment that we are still working on and which is expected
to be available in 2019.
Can it be said that the QV4 is not simply a means of transport, but a completely new response to the increasing deterioration of urban mobility?Exactly. Since my arrival at Quadro Vehicles, we’ve en-
gaged in an intense dialogue with our customers. From
a technical point of view, these are the so-called “early
adopters,” the most progressive customers a brand can
have, because they understand the potential of a new pro-
duct and want to possess precisely this, independent of
all conventions. Their feedback and enthusiasm are sim-
ply incredible and a real
source of inspiration: they
are enthusiastic about
the product, but above all
about its benefits for com-
muters in the city.
A very clear, or, better said, precise strategy... Apropos, Quadro Vehicles is the only Swiss mobility company. Where is this reflected in your approach and product? That’s true. But the QV4 is
also unique worldwide. I
would say that our Swiss
roots are reflected in our
ingenuity, precision, at-
tention to detail, service,
and quality. Style, design,
and creativity are Italian
characteristics. Marke-
ting is Swiss with strong
Italian connections. The
production takes place
in Taiwan, as well as our
coalitions. There is also
a touch of California in
our e-mobility concept.
In short, we are a highly
motivated team, well or-
ganised, with different
proficiencies in all areas
and functions. In effect,
we are a small multina-
tional start-up, or rather
a grow-up company. My
current favourite quote
at this phase comes from
Winston Churchill: “The
positive thinker sees the
invisible, feels the intan-
gible, and achieves the
impossible.”
A new mobility concept also needs a new concept for customer service: an advanced and customised 360° customer experi-ence. In order to achieve this goal, we are developing new distribution channels, a so-phisticated and easy-to-book long-term rental ser-vice, and a range of high-quality, tailor-made driving experiences.

Four wheels and (at least) three arguments for the QV4: in a completely new sector somewhere between car and motorcycle, Swiss innovation takes the best from the two established ve-hicle categories. First, there is guaranteed driving plea-sure. At a time where we are almost „driven“ by our cars, the QV4 embodies a direct experience that puts the driver back in focus. It has – and here we’re getting into the second argument – the clear potential to be addic-tive. The QV4 is dynamic, agile, a real driving machi-ne that casts a spell on men and women alike with every mile. Thanks to patented HTSTM technology, despite its four wheels, the vehicle leans up to 45 degrees into curves l ike a motorcycle. This turns the ride into a graceful dance through the city. Does this mean the QV4 is a vehicle just for adrena-line junkies? No way! After all, with its four wheels, it‘s as stable and responsive as a car while braking. Touché, that would be argument number three: maximum security.

The future of mobility actually began long ago. We book bicycles and cars via apps and our smartphones. Without the limitation of opening hours and the cumbersome return rituals of classic rental agencies. We’re already accustomed to the discrete buzz of hybrid and electric vehicles, but soon the drivers themselves will disappear from behind the wheel, drones will deliver packages, and rockets will be able to shoot hundreds of passen-gers to Mars at the same time. Where will the journey take us? We offer a glimpse of both current and future developments.

SHARED MOBILITY What began almost ten years ago, as a kind of marketing
gag by Daimler AG is now an integral part of the future stra-
tegy of many automobile companies. We‘re talking about
car sharing, which is now ubiquitous in many major cities.
Due to the steady growth of cities and the problems that
result from this, this idea proved to be farsighted. After all,
diminished living space and a lack of parking spaces cou-
pled with rising rents have, for many people, made the desi-
re to own a car a thing of the past. A quiet pilot project of
fifty smart vehicles in Ulm in southern Germany has thus
expanded to include a global fleet of nearly 13,000 cars
from the Daimler Group‘s portfolio. But the trend towards
shared mobility is still in its infancy: as customers increa-
singly use individual mobility as a service, the value-added
chain of the automotive industry is also changing. Coupled
with the forward-thinking topics of autonomous driving
and alternative driving systems, we will likely experience
networked robotic cars in our cities within a few years.
These will pick up passengers, gather our children from
school, deliver packages, and independently find their own
way to the next charging station.
ALTERNATIVE DRIVESTwo significant objectives of
transportation planning are
to move away from fossil
fuels and reduce emissions
in congested urban areas.
However, the alternative
driving systems revolution
is still hampered, in parti-
cular by the refuelling inf-
rastructure. “Tech-leader”
Tesla, based in Palo Alto, Ca-
lifornia, has revealed what is
already feasible today with
their network of superchar-
gers. Here, the competition
is still rotating like fuel cells.
Two major players from the
east, Toyota and Hyundai,
who are the only car ma-
nufacturers to be able to
showcase a serially pro-
duced, hydrogen-powered
product, are setting store
by the latter. Until recently,
technology was considered
to be cost-intensive and
fragile due to its complexi-
ty, but here too the future
looks promising. Cheaper
alloys could replace expensive components such as pla-
tinum. The batteries, which are also necessary for hydro-
gen-powered vehicles, benefit from advances in pure elec-
tromobility. Product announcements are already growing
in a wide range of areas. Trains, construction machinery,
and a new generation of trucks, such as the futuristically
styled Nikola, have reached the prototype stage and will
BLADE RUNNER (1982), WARNER BROS.

Digitale, vernetzte Verkehrs
optimierung bedeutet also flüssigeren, emissionsärmeren und sichereren Verkehr.

filling stations from
its current thirty-se-
ven to the targeted

possible that the fu-
ture belongs to the
long-neglected fuel
cell?
CONNEC-TED MOBI-LITYSince the future is
not only intended to stimulate sales through new gim-
micks but also to bring improvements in terms of safety,
economy, and environmental compatibility, experience has
shown that a large number of decisions will be removed
from drivers acting irrationally. Or those decisions will be
simplified. Brand apps offer information about the location
of the vehicle, show the fuel gauge, calculate the distance,
and sometimes even the easiest way from A to B, including
train and car sharing. While driving, the systems of vari-
ous road users can interact lightning fast during braking
manoeuvres and, for example, avoid annoying traffic jams
or rear-end collisions. Vehicles share information about
traffic flow, transmit traffic jam warnings, calculate the
correct speed to catch the next green wave, and offer infor-
mation about free parking spaces. Therefore, digital, net-
worked traffic optimisation means smoother, lower-emis-
sion, and safer traffic.
ALTERNATIVE MOBILITY CONCEPTSOne level higher are plans from Hyperloop One and Spa-
ceX. The desire to cover long distances in a very short time
is as old as the bicycle. Two great impresario visionaries,
Elon Musk and Richard Branson, are competing for the
stars and the sci-fi project Hyperloop. In just a few years,
passenger capsules will be shot through vacuum tubes at
supersonic speed. In Switzerland, they are even working
on an unmanned tunnel system that will banish much of
the freight traffic to the underground, while in Dubai the
first drone taxis have taken off on their maiden flight. Is
it all just dreams from big boys who read too much Jules
Verne as children? SpaceX, a space technology compa-
ny, founded by serial founder Elon Musk, has had such
impressive successes that NASA is considering awarding
lucrative multi-billion-dollar transport contracts to the
International Space Station as part of its privatisation
strategy. The next goal is also a given: Mars.
AUTONOMOUS DRIVINGOne crucial factor for the cost-effective conquest of the
universe is the reusability of booster rockets and the possi-
bility of autonomous landing manoeuvres. If autonomous
TOMORROWLAND (2015), DISNEY
26 I N T E R S E C T I O N G E N F / G E N E V A 2 0 1 8
control already has a certain tradition in space in terms
of parking and docking manoeuvres, it is still a little dif-
ficult to deal with on Earth. The fears of manufacturers,
legislators, and insurance companies are still too great: an
error in the system could be to the life or death detriment
of human beings. Also, the environment of a big city with
pedestrians, cyclists, and playing children is much more
complex than the universe. Nevertheless, the pre-stages
of fully automatic driving with brake, congestion, and lane
keeping assistants have already reached the compact car
segment. It’s already apparent that the next generation
of vehicles will be able to cover vast distances without
the driver‘s intervention. The day when fully automatic
driving on our roads becomes a reality cannot be stopped.
How many people will then still believe they need to get
their driving license is yet to be revealed.
People will have more and more mobility options in the
future, but at the same time more and more people will
be driven rather than driving themselves. For many who
are severely restricted in their mobility today because of,
for example, age, health, or financial means, these visions
represent significant progress, while others may fear that
the self-driving automobile as a “little freedom lived in
practice” could slowly disappear into a niche.

The internationally active British photographer Rankin has been part of the Intersection family since the very beginning. Here he talks about his vision for the upcoming QV4 campaign.

II was over the moon when the brand approached me about
this project! I love things that question the norm or are
different, so this brief was right up my street. You just have
to look at it to know that it’s unique.
QV4 is a game changer, no doubt about it and I always try to
work with brands that do the unexpected (it means I think
outside the box and do the unexpected too). Working with
something completely new means you’ve got no ties with
the past, no strings attached, so you can dive in and appro-
ach the process with absolute freedom, which is something
you don’t usually get in this industry. I enjoyed every mo-
ment of this project. It was so creative and totally refreshing.
My inspiration for the film was sparked when I went to
see Sergei Polunin dance. It really caught me. He was so
fluid, his form was so malleable but incredibly strong at
the same time, and this brought the QV4 to mind. Then
I reread the treatment from my creatives Oli and Felicity
and this was one of their approaches, so it just felt right.
The QV4 has this ability to travel with real grace and ease
but it is incredibly powerful and stable at the same time.
It’s got the supple movement of a motorbike, but the po-
wer of a car. It’s a dance on four wheels of sorts. From this
simple starting point, we eventually came to the idea of
the best of both worlds and honed in on the phrase ‘More
is more’. Why go halves?
The on set experience was pretty spectacular, the way
the dancers moved was mesmerising. The choreography
mirrored the QV4, its shape, its curves and its freedom of
movement. We didn’t have to fake any of it, we just shot
what was there and it fell into place and looked gorgeous.
I’ve got to confess that I actually had a cheeky go on set. I
was so curious and it looked so cool I couldn’t help myself.
Honestly it was awesome, a real experience.
But then after this, the professional stuntman showed us
all what it can actually do, the extent of its ability…that
was amazing. It’s for beginners & professionals, it’s easy
but you can wipe the floor with the rest of the drivers on
the road. It really has it all.
After watching it, filming it and trying it I want to get one
ASAP! The people who made it went outside the box and
it paid off big time.
It’s going to be an icon. It looks good, it feels good and it’s
an anomaly of amazing technology.
Whoever invented the wheel has a QV4 chasing their heels.

Forgotten Classic:
NEW CLOTHES FOR THE EMPEROR

Der Isdera Imperator war das Highlight jedes Auto-quartetts The Isdera Imperator was the highlight of every “Autoquartett” E-QV4 I
n 1968, under the influence of outstanding Italian
design concepts, the then 35-year-old Mercedes-Benz
designer Bruno Sacco was commissioned to dress the
test vehicle C111 with a spectacular chassis. The re-
sult may have transformed the public into a state of
ecstasy, but not the perfectionist engineers from Sindel-
fingen – because neither the quality of the new body nor
the new Wankel engine was very compelling. Since the
legendary 1950s “gullwing SL,” the dream of creating the
first super sports car with a three-pointed star had been
postponed for decades, even though the C111 could still
serve as a test vehicle for years to come.
Young Porsche engineer Eberhard Schulz didn’t want
to accept this missed opportunity. To take advantage of
the moment, in his spare time in 1972, he began desig-
ning a worthy successor to the SL, which was far remo-
ved from the C111. Six years later he ran into tuning
guru Rainer Buchmann, who recognised the potential
of the design and approached Schulz about a collabora-
tion. In fact, the CW311 (named due to the CW value of
0.311), launched as “BB-Mercedes CW311,” was to be the
first and, so far only, vehicle not developed by Daimler
and still allowed to carry the star. The resonance of the
mid-engine projectile is enormous. No car magazine, no
Autoquartett ace trumps game would be the same wi-
thout this head turner. The CW311 is also famous for its
leading role in the 1980 Eurotrash thriller “Car-napping
(ordered-stolen-delivered).” The CW311 was on ever-
yone‘s lips and thus, so was Buchmann‘s company for
vehicle individualisation. After fundamental disagree-
ments, due to, among other things, a lack of small series
production of the CW311, Eberhard Schulz left b+b and
founded his own shop under the name “Isdera” (Enginee-
ring Office for Styling, Design, and Racing).
Some changes were made because of the never-en-
ding demand for the CW311, thus he strove for a small
series suitable for road and everyday use. The tubular
lattice frame on which the body was based was stretched
to ensure that even the driving pleasure of tall opera-
tors wasn’t spoiled. For this purpose, the thermally
responsive six-litre machine from the Mercedes 600
was initially exchanged for a more rotation-friendly five-
litre unit. The necessary renaming of the super sports
car to “Isdera Imperator 108i” took place. It considered
every comfort to flatter a wealthy clientele. In addition
to the outstanding quality of artistry for small series
production, contemporary testers praise the sporty,
comfortable interior and the trunk integrated into the
engine cover. The engine sizzles with an American-es-
que muscle car sound, the handling is considered to be
mostly good-natured, whereas the tail is inclined due
to the enormous torque from the V8, and constant-
ly threatening to escape. The first series
was produced from 1984 to 1991
in an edition of seventeen at a
unit price of initially 250,000 DM.
After a revision of many details,
which had become necessary
due to changed supplier compo-
nents, about thirteen more Impera-
tors were brought to the people. How
many still exist today remains pure speculation.
