A bright future built on a strong heritageThe civil nuclear market is undergoing worldwide expansion

As the demand for energy grows worldwide, many nations are turning to nuclear power both to meet larger and more secure future capacity and to address climate change.

Rolls-Royce is well positioned to help customers achieve their goals after half a century of continuous involvement at the forefront of nuclear innovation – as technical authority for the UK Royal Navy’s fleet of submarines and leading supplier of nuclear safety instrumentation and control systems for civil nuclear power plants in 20 countries.

This long heritage has generated a wealth of skills and capabilities across the reactor lifecycle, encompassing concept, assessment, design, manufacture, through-life support and plant life-extension alongside extensive strategic supply chain experience.

“Having been at the forefront of nuclear innovation for over half a century, we are well positioned to help our customers succeed.”

05

While the fortunes of nuclear power generation fluctuated according to political and social opinion, Rolls-Royce has consistently pushed the boundaries of nuclear development from the 1950s to the present day as propulsion supplier for the Royal Navy’s successive fleets of nuclear-powered submarines. This role ensured we accumulated unrivalled experience in designing, developing, manufacturing, testing and supporting nuclear equipment – always to the highest regulatory codes and standards.

Such in-depth nuclear experience and know-how, integrating new build, instrumentation and control, nuclear services and safety, licensing and environmental engineering activities, ensures Rolls-Royce provides customers with maximum expertise and minimal risk.

Maintaining a safe nuclear environmentProviding an in-depth understanding of regulatory and environmental issues

Rolls-Royce has experience in the preparation, management and operation of safety cases to support our own safety critical products and systems and the design and licensing of new build nuclear facilities for our customers.

Rolls-Royce engineers are highly skilled in the preparation of safety cases for all stages in the life-cycle of a nuclear facility. We have developed an extensive suite of safety and environmental capabilities including expert hazard assessments, safety case management, BAT (best available technology studies) and ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable) studies.

All our work meets current global licensing codes and regulatory standards, ensuring that wherever the location and, whether for existing power stations or new build plant, we accommodate all safety case considerations in the most effective and efficient way.

We adopt an integrated approach to environmental management by applying the optimum practical technologies and protection requirements, and delivering hazard identification and risk assessment activities, including environmental impact assessments and radiation dose modelling.

“We have provided some of the most safety critical products and systems in the engineering world.”

New buildApplied expertise in high-value advanced manufacturing techniques

In the nuclear new build market, we provide customers with high quality engineering, component manufacture and supply chain support.

We can build to print, design for manufacture, or act as an experienced supply chain integrator to utilise our nuclear-certified supply chain. Our mechanical design, manufacturing capabilities and accredited manufacturing facilities can deliver a wide range of primary and secondary circuit equipment – from accumulator tanks to pressure vessels and heat exchangers.

“Continually developing our supply chain enables new skills which further strengthens our integration for future projects.”

A fundamental element for new build programmes is delivering effective supply chain solutions. Globally, we invest around five billion pounds in our supply chain, and our well-established position in the nuclear sector has helped to maintain a network of more than 300 certified suppliers.

Continually developing our supply chain enables new skills which further strengthens supply chain integration capabilities for future projects that can last for 40 years or more - ensuring sustainable quality and cost benefit for our customers.

The Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, established in 2009 through collaboration between academia and industry, is rapidly introducing new manufacturing technologies and systems. Many of these are already being used in our Primary Components Operations facility at Raynesway, Derby in the UK.
